Minor complexities of finite operations

In this paper we present a new class of complexity measures, induced by a new data structure for representing $k$-valued functions (operations), called minor decision diagram. The results are presented in terms of Multi-Valued Logic circuits (MVL-circuits), ordered decision diagrams, formulas and minor decomposition trees. When assigning values to some variables in a function $f$ the resulting function is a subfunction of $f$, and when identifying some variables the resulting function is a minor of $f$. A set $M$ of essential variables in $f$ is separable if there is a subfunction of $f$, whose set of essential variables is $M$. The essential arity gap $gap(f)$ of the function $f$ is the minimum number of essential variables in $f$ which become fictive when identifying distinct essential variables in $f$. We prove that, if a function $f$ has non-trivial arity gap ($gap(f)\ge 2$), then all sets of essential variables in $f$ are separable. We define equivalence relations which classify the functions of $k$-valued logic into classes with the same minor complexities. These relations induce transformation groups which are compared with the subgroups of the restricted affine group (RAG) and the groups determined by the equivalence relations with respect to the subfunctions, implementations and separable sets in functions. These methods provide a detailed classification of $n$-ary $k$-valued functions for small values of $n$ and $k$.

On finite functions with non-trivial arity gap

Given an $n$-ary $k-$valued function $f$, $gap(f)$ denotes the minimal number of essential variables in $f$ which become fictive when identifying any two distinct essential variables in $f$. We particularly solve a problem concerning the explicit determination of $n$-ary $k-$valued functions $f$ with $2\leq gap(f)\leq n\leq k$. Our methods yield new combinatorial results about the number of such functions.

Essential variables and positions in terms

The paper deals with $Σ-$composition of terms, which allows us to extend the derivation rules in formal deduction of identities. The concept of essential variables and essential positions of terms with respect to a set of identities is a key step in the simplification of the process of formal deduction. $Σ-$composition of terms is defined as replacement between $Σ$-equal terms. This composition induces $ΣR-$deductively closed sets of identities. In analogy to balanced identities we introduce and investigate $Σ-$balanced identities for a given set of identities $Σ$.

Essential Variables and Separable Sets in Universal Algebra

The study of essential and strongly essential variables in functions defined on finite sets is a part of $k$-valued logic. We extend the main definitions from functions to terms. This allows us to apply concepts and results of Universal Algebra. On the basis of the concept of a separable set of variables in a term we introduce a new notion of complexity of terms, algebras and varieties and give examples.

Multi-Hypersubstitutions and Colored Solid Varieties

Hypersubstitutions are mappings which map operation symbols to terms. Terms can be visualized by trees. Hypersubstitutions can be extended to mappings defined on sets of trees. The nodes of the trees, describing terms, are labelled by operation symbols and by colors, i.e. certain positive integers. We are interested in mappings which map differently colored operation symbols to different terms. In this paper we extend the theory of hypersubstitutions and solid varieties to multi-hypersubstitutions and colored solid varieties. We develop the interconnections between such colored terms and multi-hypersubstitutions and the equational theory of Universal Algebra. The collection of all varieties of a given type forms a complete lattice which is very complex and difficult to study; multi-hypersubstitutions and colored solid varieties offer a new method to study complete sublattices of this lattice.

On mappings of terms determined by hypersubstitutions

The extensions of hypersubstitutions are mappings on the set of all terms. In the present paper we characterize all hypersubstitutions which provide bijections on the set of all terms. The set of all such hypersubstitutions forms a monoid. On the other hand, one can modify each hypersubstitution to any mapping on the set of terms. For this we can consider mappings from the set of all hypersubstitutions into the set of all mappings on the set of all terms.

Multi-Solid Varieties and Mh-Transducers

We consider the concepts of colored terms and multi-hypersubstitutions. Studying the multi-hypersubstitutions we find out necessary and sufficient conditions a variety to be pre-complete. Finally we give an automata realization of multi-hypersubstitutions and colored terms.

Essential arity gap of Boolean functions

We investigate the Boolean functions with essential arity gap 2. We use Full Conjunctive Normal Forms instead of Zhegalkin's polynomials, which allow us to simplify the proofs and to obtain several combinatorial results, concerning the Boolean functions with a given arity gap.

Essential Inputs and Minimal Tree Automata

We continue studying essential inputs of trees and automata. Strongly essential inputs of trees are introduced and studied. Various examples for application in Computer Science are shown.

Tree Automata and Essential Subtrees

We introduce essential subtrees for terms (trees) and tree automata . There are some results concerning independent sets of subtrees and separable sets for a tree and an automaton.
