Dynamics of QCD Matter -- current status

In this article, there are 18 sections discussing various current topics in the field of relativistic heavy-ion collisions and related phenomena, which will serve as a snapshot of the current state of the art. Section 1 reviews experimental results of some recent light-flavored particle production data from ALICE collaboration. Other sections are mostly theoretical in nature. Very strong but transient magnetic field created in relativistic heavy-ion collisions could have important observational consequences. This has generated a lot of theoretical activity in the last decade. Sections 2, 7, 9, 10 and 11 deal with the effects of the magnetic field on the properties of the QCD matter. There are several unanswered questions about the QCD phase diagram. Sections 3, 11 and 18 discuss various aspects of the QCD phase diagram and phase transitions. Recent years have witnessed interesting developments in foundational aspects of hydrodynamics and their application to heavy-ion collisions. Sections 12, 15, 16 and 17 of this article probe some aspects of this exciting field. Transport coefficients together with their temperature- and density-dependence, are essential inputs in hydrodynamical calculations. Sections 5, 8 and 14 deal with calculation/estimation of various transport coefficients (shear and bulk viscosity, thermal conductivity, relaxation times, etc.) of quark matter and hadronic matter. Sections 4, 6 and 13 deals with interesting new developments in the field. Section 4 discusses color dipole gluon distribution function at small transverse momentum in the form of a series of Bells polynomials. Section 6 discusses the properties of Higgs boson in the quark gluon plasma using Higgs-quark interaction. Section 13 discusses modification of coalescence model to incorporate viscous corrections and application of this model.

Medium effects on the electrical and Hall conductivities of a hot and magnetized pion gas

The electrical and Hall conductivities in a uniform magnetic field are evaluated for an interacting pion gas using the kinetic theory approach within the ambit of relaxation time approximation (RTA). The in-medium cross sections vis-a-vis the relaxation time for $ππ$ scattering are obtained using a one-loop modified thermal propagator for the exchanged $ρ$ and $σ$ mesons using thermal field theoretic techniques. For higher values of the magnetic field, a monotonic increase of the electrical conductivity with the temperature is observed. However, for a given temperature the conductivity is found to decrease steadily with magnetic field. The Hall conductivity, at lower values of the magnetic field, is found to decrease with temperature more rapidly than the electrical conductivity, whereas at higher values of the magnetic field, a linear increase is seen. Use of the in-medium scattering cross-section is found to produce a significant effect on the temperature dependence of both electrical and Hall conductivities compared to the case where vacuum cross-section is used.

Effects of quark anomalous magnetic moment on the thermodynamical properties and mesonic excitations of magnetized hot and dense matter in PNJL model

Various thermodynamic quantities and the phase diagram of strongly interacting hot and dense magnetized quark matter are obtained with the $ 2 $-flavour Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model with Polyakov loop considering finite values of the anomalous magnetic moment (AMM) of the quarks. Susceptibilities associated with constituent quark mass and traced Polyakov loop are used to evaluate chiral and deconfinement transition temperatures. It is found that, inclusion of the AMM of the quarks in presence of the background magnetic field results in a substantial decrease in the chiral as well as deconfinement transition temperatures in contrast to an enhancement in the chiral transition temperature in its absence. Using standard techniques of finite temperature field theory, the two point thermo-magnetic mesonic correlation functions in the scalar ($σ$) and neutral pseudoscalar ($π^0$) channels are evaluated to calculate the masses of $σ$ and $ π^0 $ considering the AMM of the quarks.

Scattering cross-section under external magnetic field using the optical theorem

The cross-section for the lowest order $2\rightarrow2$ elastic scattering between two charged scalars under external magnetic field mediated via a neutral scalar, has been computed in strong as well as weak magnetic field limits. This has been done by applying the optical theorem where the cross-section is expressed in terms of the imaginary parts of different one-loop graphs contributing to the forward scattering amplitudes. The modification in the amplitudes due to the external magnetic field has been done by means of replacing the charged scalar propagators with the Schwinger proper-time ones. Significant modifications of the cross-sections with respect to the vacuum cross-section are observed due to the external magnetic field.

Effects of anomalous magnetic moment of quarks on the dilepton production from hot and dense magnetized quark matter using the NJL model

Dilepton production rate (DPR) from hot and dense quark matter is studied in the presence of an arbitrary external magnetic field using the 2-flavour Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model. The anomalous magnetic moment (AMM) of the quarks is taken into consideration while calculating the constituent quark mass as well as the DPR from the thermo-magnetic medium. An infinite number of quark Landau levels is incorporated so that no approximations are made on the strength of the background magnetic field. The analytic structure of the two point vector current correlation function in the complex energy plane reveals that, in addition to the usual Unitary cut, a non-trival Landau cut appears in the physical kinematic domains solely due to the external magnetic field. Moreover, these kinematic domains of the Unitary and Landau cuts are found to be significantly modified due to the AMM of the quarks. With finite AMM of the quarks, for certain values of the external magnetic field, the kinematically forbidden gap between the Unitary and Landau cuts are shown to vanish leading to the generation of a continuous spectrum of dilepton emission over the whole invariant mass region not observed earlier.

Thermo-magnetic spectral properties of neutral mesons in vector and axial-vector channels using NJL model

In this work the neutral meson properties have been investigated in the presence of thermo-magnetic background using two-flavor Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. Mass, spectral function and dispersion relations are obtained in the scalar ($σ$) and pseudo-scalar ($π^0$) channels as well as in the vector ($ρ^0$) and axial vector ($a^0_1$) channels. The general Lorentz structures for the vector and axial-vector meson polarization functions have been considered in detail. The ultra-violet divergences appearing in this work have been regularized using a mixed regularization technique where the gamma functions arising in dimensional regularization are replaced with incomplete gamma functions as usually done in the proper time regularization procedure. The meson spectral functions obtained in the presence of a magnetic field possess nontrivial oscillatory structure. Similar to the scalar and pseudo-scalar channel, the spectral functions for each of the modes of $ρ^0$ are observed to overlap with the corresponding modes of its chiral partner $a_1^0$ mesons in the chiral symmetry restored phase. We observe discontinuities in the masses of all the mesonic excitations for a non-zero external magnetic field.

Viscous coefficients and thermal conductivity of a $πK N$ gas mixture in the medium

The temperature and density dependence of the relaxation times, thermal conductivity, shear viscosity and bulk viscosity for a hot and dense gas consisting of pions, kaons and nucleons have been evaluated in the kinetic theory approach. The in-medium cross-sections for $ππ$, $πK$ and $πN$ scatterings were obtained by using complete propagators for the exchanged $ρ$, $σ$, $K^*$ and $Δ$ excitations derived using thermal field theoretic techniques. Notable deviations can be observed in the temperature dependence of $η$, $ζ$ and $λ$ when compared with corresponding calculations using vacuum cross-sections usually employed in the literature. The value of the specific shear viscosity $η/s$ is found to be in agreement with available estimates.

Effect of anomalous magnetic moment of quarks on the phase structure and mesonic properties in the NJL model

Employing a field dependent three-momentum cut-off regularization technique, we study the phase structure and mesonic masses using the $2$-flavour Nambu-Jona Lasinio model at finite temperature and density in presence of arbitrary external magnetic field. This approach is then applied to incorporate the effects of the anomalous magnetic moment(AMM) of quarks on constituent quark mass and thermodynamic observables as a function of temperature/baryonic density. The critical temperature for transition from chiral symmetry broken to the restored phase is observed to decrease with the external magnetic field, which can be classified as inverse magnetic catalysis, while an opposite behaviour is realized in the case of a vanishing magnetic moment, implying magnetic catalysis. These essential features are also reflected in the phase diagram. Furthermore, the properties of the low lying scalar and neutral pseudoscalar mesons are also studied in presence of a hot and dense magnetized medium including AMM of the quarks using random phase approximation. For non-zero values of magnetic field, we notice a sudden jump in the mass of the Goldstone mode at and above the Mott transition temperature which is found to decrease substantially with the increase in magnetic field when the AMM of the quarks are taken into consideration.

In-medium thermal conductivity and diffusion coefficients of a hot hadronic gas mixture

The relativistic kinetic theory approach has been employed to study four well-known transport coefficients that characterize heat flow and diffusion for the case of a hot mixture constituting of nucleons and pions. Medium effects on the cross-section for binary collisions ($Nπ$,$ππ$) have been taken into consideration by incorporating self-energy corrections to modify the propagator of the exchanged $Δ$ baryon in $Nπ$ interaction and the $ρ$ and $σ$ meson propagators for the case of $ππ$ interaction. The temperature dependence of the four coefficients have been investigated for several values of the baryon chemical potential.

Viscosity calculations from Hadron Resonance Gas model: Finite size effect

We have attempted to review on microscopic calculation of transport coefficients like shear and bulk viscosities in the framework of hadron resonance gas model, where a special attention is explored on the effect of finite system size. The standard expressions of transport coefficients, obtained from relaxation time approximation of kinetic theory or diagrammatic Kubo-type formalism, carry mainly two temperature dependent components -- thermodynamical phase space and relaxation time of medium constituent. Owing to quantum effect of finite system size, thermodynamical phase space can be reduced as its momentum distribution will be started from some finite lower momentum cut-off instead of zero momentum. On the other hand, relaxation time of hadrons can also face finite size effect by considering only those relaxation scales, which are lower than the system size. Owing to these phenomenological issues, we have proposed a system size dependent upper bound of transport coefficients for ideal HRG model, whose qualitative technique may also be applicable in other models. This finite size prescription may guide to shorten the broad numerical band, within which earlier estimated values of transport coefficients for hadronic matter are located. It is also suspected that the hadronic matter may not be far from the (nearly) perfect fluid nature like the quark gluon plasma.

General structure of the neutral $ρ$ meson self-energy and its spectral properties in a hot and dense magnetized medium

The one loop self energy of the neutral $ρ$ meson is obtained for the effective $ρππ$ and $ρNN$ interaction at finite temperature and density in the presence of a constant background magnetic field of arbitrary strength. In our approach, the eB-dependent vacuum part of the self energy is extracted by means of dimensional regularization where the ultraviolet divergences corresponding to the pure vacuum self energy manifest as the pole singularities of gamma as well as Hurwitz zeta functions. This improved regularization procedure consistently reproduces the expected results in the vanishing magnetic field limit and can be used quite generally in other self energy calculations dealing with arbitrary magnetic field strength. In presence of the external magnetic field, the general Lorentz structure for the in-medium vector boson self energy is derived which can also be implemented in case of the gauge bosons such as photons and gluons. It has been shown that with vanishing perpendicular momentum of the external particle, essentially two form factors are sufficient to describe the self energy completely. Consequently, two distinct modes are observed in the study of the effective mass, dispersion relations and the spectral function of $ρ^0$ where one of the modes possesses two fold degeneracy. For large baryonic chemical potential, it is observed that the critical magnetic field required to block the $ρ^0\rightarrowπ^+π^-$ decay channel increases significantly with temperature. However, in case of smaller values reaching down to vanishing chemical potential, the critical field follows the opposite trend.

Transport coefficients of hot magnetized QCD matter beyond the lowest Landau level approximation

In this article, shear viscosity, bulk viscosity, and thermal conductivity of a hot QCD medium have been studied in the presence of a strong magnetic field. To model the hot magnetized QCD matter, an extended quasi-particle description of the hot QCD equation of state in the presence of the magnetic field has been adopted. The effects of higher Landau levels on the temperature dependence of viscous coefficients (bulk and shear viscosities) and thermal conductivity have been obtained by considering the $1\rightarrow 2$ processes in the presence of the strong magnetic field. An effective covariant kinetic theory has been set up in (1+1)-dimensional that includes mean field contributions in terms of quasi-particle dispersions and magnetic field to describe the Landau level dynamics of quarks. The sensitivity of these parameters to the magnitude of the magnetic field has also been explored. Both the magnetic field and mean field contributions have seen to play a significant role in obtaining the temperature behaviour of the transport coefficients of hot QCD medium.

Electromagnetic spectral function and dilepton rate in a hot magnetized QCD medium

The dilepton production rate in hot QCD medium is studied within a effective description of the medium in the presence of magnetic field. This could be done by obtaining the one-loop self energy of photon due to the effective (quasi-) quark loop at finite temperature under an arbitrary external magnetic field while employing the real time formalism of Thermal Field Theory. The effective quarks and gluons encode hot QCD medium effective in terms of their respective effective fugacities. The magnetic field enters in the form of landau level quantization, in the matter sector (quarks, antiquarks). The full Schwinger proper time propagator including all the Landau levels is considered for the quasi quarks while calculating the photon self energy. The electromagnetic Debye screening (in terms of the self-energy) has seen to be influenced both by the hot QCD medium effects and magnetic field. Analogous results are also obtained from the semi classical transport theory. The imaginary part of the photon self energy function is obtained from the discontinuities of the self energy across the Unitary cuts which are also present at zero magnetic field and the Landau cuts which are purely due to the magnetic field. The dilepton production rate is then obtained in terms of the product of electromagnetic spectral functions due to quark loop and lepton loop. The modifications of both the quarks/antiquarks as well as leptons in presence of an arbitrary external magnetic field have been considered in the formalism. Significant enhancement of the low invariant mass dileptons due the appearance of the Landau cuts in the electromagnetic spectral function at finite external magnetic field has been observed. A substantial enhancement of dilepton rate is also found when the EOS effects are considered through the effective quarks/antiquraks.

Phenomenological bound on the viscosity of the hadron resonance gas

We have explored some phenomenological issues during calculations of transport coefficients for hadronic matter, produced in the experiments of heavy ion collisions. Here, we have used an ideal hadron resonance gas model to demonstrate the issues. On the basis of dissipation mechanism, the hadronic zoo is classified into resonance and non-resonance members, who participate in dissipation via strong decay and scattering channels respectively. Imposing our phenomenological restriction, we are able to provide a rough upper and lower bound estimations of transport coefficients. Interestingly, we find that our proposed lower limit estimation for shear viscosity to entropy density ratio is little larger than its quantum lower bound. By taking a simple example, we have demonstrated how our proposed restriction help to tune any estimation of transport coefficients within its numerical band, proposed by us.

Effect of external magnetic field on nucleon mass in hot and dense medium : Inverse Magnetic Catalysis in Walecka Model

Vacuum to nuclear matter phase transition has been studied in presence of constant external background magnetic field with the mean field approximation in Walecka model. The anomalous nucleon magnetic moment has been taken into account using the modified "weak" field expansion of the fermion propagator having non-trivial correction terms for charged as well as for neutral particles. The effect of nucleon magnetic moment is found to favour the magnetic catalysis effect at zero temperature and zero baryon density. However, extending the study to finite temperatures, it is observed that the anomalous nuclear magnetic moment plays a crucial role in characterizing the qualitative behaviour of vacuum to nuclear matter phase transition even in case of the weak external magnetic fields . The critical temperature corresponding to the vacuum to nuclear medium phase transition is observed to decrease with the external magnetic field which can be identified as the inverse magnetic catalysis in Walecka model whereas the opposite behaviour is obtained in case of vanishing magnetic moment indicating magnetic catalysis.

Contribution of Kaon component in viscosity and conductivity of hadronic medium

The two-point correlation functions of kaonic viscous stress tensors and electro-magnetic currents have been calculated respectively to estimate the contributions of the strange sector in the shear viscosity and electrical conductivity of hadronic medium. In the one-loop correlators, kaon propagators contain a non-zero thermal width that leads to non-divergent values of transport coefficients. With the help of effective Lagrangian densities of strange hadrons, we have calculated in-medium self-energy of kaon for different possible mesonic loops, whose imaginary part provide the estimation of kaon thermal width. It is observed that near the quark-hadron transition temperature, the contribution of kaons to shear viscosity is larger and increases faster with temperature than pionic contribution. In case of electrical conductivity the trend due kaon component appears to be opposite in nature with respect to pion component.

Thermal effects on $ρ$ meson properties in an external magnetic field

A detailed study of the analytic structure of 1-loop self energy graphs for neutral and charged $ρ$ mesons is presented at finite temperature and arbitrary magnetic field using the real time formalism of thermal field theory. The imaginary part of the self energy is obtained from the discontinuities of these graphs across the Unitary and Landau cuts, which is seen to be different for $ρ^0$ and $ρ^\pm$. The magnetic field dependent vacuum contribution to the real part of the self energy, which is usually ignored, is found to be appreciable. A significant effect of temperature and magnetic field is seen in the self energy, spectral function, effective mass and dispersion relation of $ρ^0$ as well as of $ρ^\pm$ relative to its trivial Landau shift. However, for charged $ρ$ mesons, on account of the dominance of the Landau term, the effective mass appears to be independent of temperature. The trivial coupling of magnetic moment of $ρ^\pm$ with external magnetic field, when incorporated in the calculation, makes the $ρ^\pm$ to condense at high magnetic field.

Medium effects on the electrical conductivity of a hot pion gas

The electromagnetic response of an interacting system of pions has been studied at finite temperature. The corresponding transport parameter i.e. electrical conductivity has been estimated by solving the relativistic transport equation in presence of a finite electric field employing the Chapman-Enskog technique where the collision term has been treated in the relaxation time approximation. The scattering amplitudes of charged pions modeled by $ρ$ and $σ$ meson exchange using an effective Lagrangian have been obtained at finite temperature by introducing self-energy corrections in the thermal propagators in the real time formalism. The temperature behavior of electrical conductivity for a hot pion gas shows significant quantitative enhancement due to the inclusion of medium effects in scattering.
