Spin transport of weakly disordered Heisenberg chain at infinite temperature

We study the disordered Heisenberg spin chain, which exhibits many body localization at strong disorder, in the weak to moderate disorder regime. A continued fraction calculation of dynamical correlations is devised, using a variational extrapolation of recurrents. Good convergence for the infinite chain limit is shown. We find that the local spin correlations decay at long times as $C \sim t^{-β}$, while the conductivity exhibits a low frequency power law $σ\sim ω^α$. The exponents depict sub-diffusive behavior $ β< 1/2, α> 0 $ at all finite disorders, and convergence to the scaling result, $α+2β= 1$, at large disorders.

Collective modes in a quantum solid

We provide a theoretical explanation for the optical modes observed in inelastic neutron scattering (INS) on the bcc solid phase of helium 4 [T. Markovich, E. Polturak, J. Bossy, and E. Farhi, Phys. Rev. Lett. 88, 195301 (2002)]. We argue that these excitations are amplitude (Higgs) modes associated with fluctuations of the crystal order parameter within the unit cell. We present an analysis of the modes based on an effective Ginzburg-Landau model, classify them according to their symmetry properties, and compute their signature in INS experiments. In addition, we calculate the dynamical structure factor by means of an ab intio quantum Monte Carlo simulation and find a finite frequency excitation at zero relative momentum.

A bosonic topological phase in a paired superfluid

We study an effective model of two interacting species of bosons in two dimensions, which is amenable to sign problem free Monte Carlo simulations. In addition to conventional ground states, we access a paired superfluid which is also a topological phase, protected by the remaining $U(1) \times \mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry. This phase arises from the condensation of a composite object, the bound state of vortices and anti-vortices of one species, to a boson of the second species. We introduce a bulk response function, the Ising analog of the quantized Hall effect, to diagnose the topological phase. The interplay of broken symmetry and topology leads to interesting effects such as fractionally charged vortices in the paired superfluid. Possible extensions towards realistic models of cold atomic bosons are discussed.

Critical capacitance and charge-vortex duality near the superfluid to insulator transition

Using a generalized reciprocity relation between charge and vortex conductivities at complex frequencies in two space dimensions, we identify the capacitance in the insulating phase as a measure of vortex condensate stiffness. We compute the ratio of boson superfluid stiffness to vortex condensate stiffness at mirror points to be 0.21(1) for the relativistic O(2) model. The product of dynamical conductivities at mirror points is used as a test of charge-vortex duality. We propose the finite wave vector compressibility as an experimental measure of the vortex condensate stiffness for neutral lattice bosons.

Fate of the Higgs mode near quantum criticality

We study the relativistic O(N) field theory near the quantum critical point in 2+1 dimensions for N=2 and N=3. The scalar susceptibility is evaluated by Monte Carlo simulation. We show that the spectrum contains a peak associated with the Higgs mode, which remains well-defined all the way to the critical point. The fidelity of this peak and the amplitude ratio between the critical energy scales on both sides of the transition are computed.

Dynamic Spin Fluctuations at $T\rightarrow 0$ in a Spin-1/2 Ferromagnetic Kagome Lattice

We report magnetization, electron spin resonance (ESR), and muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) measurements on single crystals of the $S=1/2$ (Cu$% ^{+2}$) kagomé compound Cu(1,3-benzendicarboxylate). The $μ$SR is carried to temperatures as low as 45 mK. The spin Hamiltonian parameters are determined from the analysis of the magnetization and ESR data. We find that this compound has anisotropic ferromagnetic interactions. Nevertheless, no spin freezing is observed even at temperatures two orders of magnitude lower than the coupling constants. In light of this finding, the relation between persistent spin dynamics and spin liquid are reexamined.

Dynamics and Conductivity Near Quantum Criticality

Relativistic O(N) field theories are studied near the quantum critical point in two space dimensions. We compute dynamical correlations by large scale Monte Carlo simulations and numerical analytic continuation. In the ordered side, the scalar spectral function exhibits a universal peak at the Higgs mass. For N=3 and 4 we confirm its ω^3 rise at low frequency. On the disordered side, the spectral function exhibits a sharp gap. For N=2, the dynamical conductivity rises above a threshold at the Higgs mass (density gap), in the superfluid (Mott insulator) phase. For charged bosons, (Josephson arrays) the power law rise above the Higgs mass, increases from two to four. Approximate charge-vortex duality is reflected in the ratio of imaginary conductivities on either side of the transition. We determine the critical conductivity to be σ^*_c = 0.3 (\pm 0.1) 4e^2/h. In the appendices, we describe a generalization of the worm algorithm to N>2, and also a singular value decomposition error analysis for the numerical analytic continuation.

Super-Resolution and Reconstruction of Sparse Sub-Wavelength Images

We use compressed sensing to demonstrate theoretically the reconstruction of sub-wavelength features from measured far-field, and provide experimental proof-of-concept. The methods can be applied to non-optical microscopes, provided the information is sparse.
