Orbifold Hamiltonian Floer theory for global quotients

We construct bulk-deformed orbifold Hamiltonian Floer theory for a global quotient orbifold, that is the quotient of a smooth closed symplectic manifold by a finite group acting faithfully via symplectomorphisms. The moduli spaces define an `ordered marked Flow category', which we equip with a coherent presentation via derived orbifolds. The global charts for orbifold Floer cylinders are built from moduli spaces of holomorphic curves in a quotient of projective space by a free action of the given finite group.

Orbifold Floer spectral invariants, symmetric product links and Weyl laws

We explain a strategy, based on spectral invariants on symmetric product orbifolds, for proving the smooth closing lemma for Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of a symplectic manifold when the orbifold quantum cohomologies of its symmetric products possess suitable idempotents. We relate the existence of such idempotents to the manifold containing a sequence of Lagrangian links, whose number of components tends to infinity, satisfying a number of properties. Orbifold Floer cohomology for global quotient orbifolds is used axiomatically, and is constructed in a companion paper. We illustrate this strategy by giving a new proof of the smooth closing lemma for area-preserving diffeomorphisms of the 2-sphere. The construction of suitable Lagrangian links in higher dimensions remains an intriguing open problem.

A universal extension of helicity to topological flows

Helicity is a fundamental conserved quantity in physical systems governed by vector fields whose evolution is described by volume-preserving transformations on a three-manifold. Notable examples include inviscid, incompressible fluid flows, modeled by the three-dimensional Euler equations, and conducting plasmas, described by the magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equations. A key property of helicity is its invariance under volume-preserving diffeomorphisms. In an influential article from 1973, Arnold, having provided an ergodic interpretation of helicity as the "asymptotic Hopf invariant", posed the question of whether this invariance persists under volume-preserving homeomorphisms. More generally, he asked whether helicity can be extended to topological volume-preserving flows. We answer both questions affirmatively for flows without rest points. Our approach reformulates Arnold's question in the framework of what we call $C^0$ Hamiltonian structures. This perspective enables us to leverage recent developments in $C^0$ symplectic geometry, particularly results concerning the algebraic structure of the group of area-preserving homeomorphisms.

Ergodic closing lemmas and invariant Lagrangians

Motivated by the ergodic closing lemma of Mañé, we investigate the $C^\infty$ closing lemma in higher-dimensional Hamiltonian systems, with a focus on the statistical behavior of periodic orbits generated by $C^\infty$-small perturbations. We demonstrate that, under certain Floer-theoretic conditions, invariant or recurrent Lagrangian submanifolds can give rise to periodic orbits whose statistical properties are controllable. For instance, we show that for Hamiltonian systems preserving the zero section in $T^*\mathbb{T}^n$, $C^\infty$ generically, there exist periodic orbits converging to an invariant measure supported on the zero section.

Subleading asymptotics of link spectral invariants and homeomorphism groups of surfaces

This paper continues the study of link spectral invariants on compact surfaces, introduced in our previous work and shown to satisfy a Weyl law in which they asymptotically recover the Calabi invariant. Here we study their subleading asymptotics on surfaces of genus zero. We show the subleading asymptotics are bounded for smooth time-dependent Hamiltonians, and recover the Ruelle invariant for autonomous disc maps with finitely many critical values. We deduce that the Calabi homomorphism admits infinitely many extensions to the group of compactly supported area-preserving homeomorphisms, and that the kernel of the Calabi homomorphism on the group of hameomorphisms is not simple.

Quantitative Heegaard Floer cohomology and the Calabi invariant

We define a new family of spectral invariants associated to certain Lagrangian links in compact and connected surfaces of any genus. We show that our invariants recover the Calabi invariant of Hamiltonians in their limit. As applications, we resolve several open questions from topological surface dynamics and continuous symplectic topology: we show that the group of Hamiltonian homeomorphisms of any compact surface with (possibly empty) boundary is not simple; we extend the Calabi homomorphism to the group of Hameomorphisms constructed by Oh-Müller; and, we construct an infinite dimensional family of quasimorphisms on the group of area and orientation preserving homeomorphisms of the two-sphere. Our invariants are inspired by recent work of Polterovich and Shelukhin defining and applying spectral invariants for certain classes of links in the two-sphere.

A Hölder-type inequality for the $C^0$ distance and Anosov-Katok pseudo-rotations

We prove a Hölder-type inequality for Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms relating the $C^0$ norm, the $C^0$ norm of the derivative, and the Hofer/spectral norm. We obtain as a consequence that sufficiently fast convergence in Hofer/spectral metric forces $C^0$ convergence. The second theme of our paper is the study of pseudo-rotations that arise from the Anosov-Katok method. As an application of our Hölder-type inequality, we prove a $C^0$ rigidity result for such pseudo-rotations.

PFH spectral invariants on the two-sphere and the large scale geometry of Hofer's metric

We resolve three longstanding questions related to the large scale geometry of the group of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of the two-sphere, equipped with Hofer's metric. Namely: (1) we resolve the Kapovich-Polterovich question by showing that this group is not quasi-isometric to the real line; (2) more generally, we show that the kernel of Calabi over any proper open subset is unbounded; and (3) we show that the group of area and orientation preserving homeomorphisms of the two-sphere is not a simple group. We also obtain, as a corollary, that the group of area-preserving diffeomorphisms of the open disc, equipped with an area-form of finite area, is not perfect. Central to all of our proofs are new sequences of spectral invariants over the two-sphere, defined via periodic Floer homology.

An Arnold-type principle for non-smooth objects

In this article we study the Arnold conjecture in settings where objects under consideration are no longer smooth but only continuous. The example of a Hamiltonian homeomorphism, on any closed symplectic manifold of dimension greater than 2, having only one fixed point shows that the conjecture does not admit a direct generalization to continuous settings. However, it appears that the following Arnold-type principle continues to hold in continuous settings: Suppose that X is a non-smooth object for which one can define spectral invariants. If the number of spectral invariants associated to X is smaller than the number predicted by the (homological) Arnold conjecture, then the set of fixed/intersection points of X is homologically non-trivial, hence it is infinite. We recently proved that the above principle holds for Hamiltonian homeomorphisms of closed and aspherical symplectic manifolds. In this article, we verify this principle in two new settings: $C^0$ Lagrangians in cotangent bundles and Hausdorff limits of Legendrians in 1-jet bundles which are isotopic to the zero section. An unexpected consequence of the result on Legendrians is that the classical Arnold conjecture does hold for Hausdorff limits of Legendrians in 1-jet bundles. Dedicated to Claude Viterbo on the occasion of his 60th birthday.

The Anosov-Katok method and pseudo-rotations in symplectic dynamics

We prove that toric symplectic manifolds admit Hamiltonian pseudo-rotations with a finite, and in a sense minimal, number of ergodic measures. The set of ergodic measures of these pseudo-rotations consists of the measure induced by the symplectic volume form and the Dirac measures supported at the fixed points of the torus action. Our construction relies on the conjugation method of Anosov and Katok.

Proof of the simplicity conjecture

In the 1970s, Fathi, having proven that the group of compactly supported volume-preserving homeomorphisms of the $n$-ball is simple for $n \ge 3$, asked if the same statement holds in dimension $2$. We show that the group of compactly supported area-preserving homeomorphisms of the two-disc is not simple. This settles what is known as the "simplicity conjecture" in the affirmative. In fact, we prove the a priori stronger statement that this group is not perfect. An important step in our proof involves verifying for certain smooth twist maps a conjecture of Hutchings concerning recovering the Calabi invariant from the asymptotics of spectral invariants defined using periodic Floer homology. Another key step, which builds on recent advances in continuous symplectic topology, involves proving that these spectral invariants extend continuously to area-preserving homeomorphisms of the disc. These two properties of PFH spectral invariants are potentially of independent interest. Our general strategy is partially inspired by suggestions of Fathi and the approach of Oh towards the simplicity question. In particular, we show that infinite twist maps, studied by Oh, are not finite energy homeomorphisms, which resolves the "infinite twist conjecture" in the affirmative; these twist maps are now the first examples of Hamiltonian homeomorphisms which can be said to have infinite energy. Another consequence of our work is that various forms of fragmentation for volume preserving homeomorphisms which hold for higher dimensional balls fail in dimension two.

The action spectrum and C^0 symplectic topology

Our first main result states that the spectral norm on the group of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms, introduced in the works of Viterbo, Schwarz and Oh, is continuous with respect to the C^0 topology, when M is symplectically aspherical. This statement was previously proven only in the case of closed surfaces. As a corollary, using a recent result of Kislev and Shelukhin, we obtain C^0 continuity of barcodes on aspherical symplectic manifolds, and furthermore define barcodes for Hamiltonian homeomorphisms. We also present several applications to Hofer geometry and dynamics of Hamiltonian homeomorphisms. Our second main result is related to the Arnold conjecture about fixed points of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms. The recent example of a Hamiltonian homeomorphism, on any closed symplectic manifold of dimension greater than 2, having only one fixed point, shows that the conjecture does not admit a direct generalization to the C^0 setting. However, in this paper we demonstrate that a reformulation of the conjecture in terms of fixed points as well as spectral invariants still holds for Hamiltonian homeomorphisms on symplectically aspherical manifolds.

Barcodes and area-preserving homeomorphisms

In this paper we use the theory of barcodes as a new tool for studying dynamics of area-preserving homeomorphisms. We will show that the barcode of a Hamiltonian diffeomorphism of a surface depends continuously on the diffeomorphism, and furthermore define barcodes for Hamiltonian homeomorphisms. Our main dynamical application concerns the notion of {\it weak conjugacy}, an equivalence relation which arises naturally in connection to $C^0$ continuous conjugacy invariants of Hamiltonian homeomorphisms. We show that for a large class of Hamiltonian homeomorphisms with a finite number of fixed points, the number of fixed points, counted with multiplicity, is a weak conjugacy invariant. The proof relies, in addition to the theory of barcodes, on techniques from surface dynamics such as Le Calvez's theory of transverse foliations. In our exposition of barcodes and persistence modules, we present a proof of the Isometry Theorem which incorporates Barannikov's theory of simple Morse complexes.

A C^0 counterexample to the Arnold conjecture

The Arnold conjecture states that a Hamiltonian diffeomorphism of a closed and connected symplectic manifold must have at least as many fixed points as the minimal number of critical points of a smooth function on the manifold. It is well known that the Arnold conjecture holds for Hamiltonian homeomorphisms of closed symplectic surfaces. The goal of this paper is to provide a counterexample to the Arnold conjecture for Hamiltonian homeomorphisms in dimensions four and higher. More precisely, we prove that every closed and connected symplectic manifold of dimension at least four admits a Hamiltonian homeomorphism with a single fixed point.

Spectral killers and Poisson bracket invariants

We find optimal upper bounds for spectral invariants of a Hamiltonian whose support is contained in a union of mutually disjoint displaceable balls. This gives a partial answer to a question posed by Leonid Polterovich in connection with his recent work on Poisson bracket invariants of coverings.

Reduction of symplectic homeomorphisms

In a previous article, we proved that symplectic homeomorphisms preserving a coisotropic submanifold C, preserve its characteristic foliation as well. As a consequence, such symplectic homeomorphisms descend to the reduction of the coisotropic C. In this article we show that these reduced homeomorphisms continue to exhibit certain symplectic properties. In particular, in the specific setting where the symplectic manifold is a torus and the coisotropic is a standard subtorus, we prove that the reduced homeomorphism preserves spectral invariants and hence the spectral capacity. To prove our main result, we use Lagrangian Floer theory to construct a new class of spectral invariants which satisfy a non-standard triangle inequality.

New energy-capacity-type inequalities and uniqueness of continuous Hamiltonians

We prove a new variant of the energy-capacity inequality for closed rational symplectic manifolds (as well as certain open manifolds such as cotangent bundle of closed manifolds...) and we derive some consequences to C^0-symplectic topology. Namely, we prove that a continuous function which is a uniform limit of smooth Hamiltonians whose flows converge to the identity for the spectral (or Hofer's) distance must vanish. This gives a new proof of uniqueness of continuous generating Hamiltonian for hameomorphisms. This also allows us to improve a result by Cardin and Viterbo on the C^0-rigidity of the Poisson bracket.
