Structure and Representations of a Diagrammatic Non-Commutative Tangloid Algebra

We introduce the \emph{tangloid algebra} $\mathcal{T}_n$, a diagrammatic algebra arising from the extended tangloid category $\Ti$, and its subalgebra, the \emph{braidoid algebra} $\mathcal{B}_n$. The construction begins with the unoriented tangloid category $UTC$, inspired by Turaev's theory of knotoids, which is obtained from the unoriented welded tangleoid category $UWTC$ by removing the welded relation while retaining the forbidden moves and imposing some additional relations. Within this framework, the braidoid category arises naturally as a subcategory of $UTC$. We then introduce the extended tangloid category $\Ti$ by adjoining a placeholder morphism $\emptyset$, which allows the generators to be extended to endomorphisms of a fixed $n$-box. The interaction of the placeholder morphism with the crossing morphisms gives rise to diagonal morphisms, $/$ and $\backslash$, which are used in the defining relations of $\Ti$. The corresponding extended braidoid category $\mathbf{Brd}_{\Ti}$ is realised as a subcategory of $\Ti$. For each $n\geq 0$, we then define the tangloid algebra $\mathcal{T}_n$ by linearising the endomorphism algebra $\operatorname{End}_{\Ti}(n)$, as a unital $\mathbb{C}$--algebra presented by diagrammatic generators and relations. We also define the braidoid subalgebra $\mathcal{B}_n$, which provides an algebraic framework for the theory of braidoids. We further introduce the reduced tangloid algebra $δ\mathcal{T}_n$ by imposing two additional reduction relations for trivial knot and trivial knotoid components, and we construct a natural diagrammatic \textit{bilinear pairing} on $δ\mathcal{T}_n$ using diagrammatic reflection, composition, and closure. Our categorical and algebraic setting provides a theoretical framework for studying diagrammatic structures with intrinsic endpoints, namely knotoids, linkoids, and braidoids, and related diagram algebras.

On pure braids and bonded braids

In this paper we investigate the relation between the bonded braid monoid BBn and the group of pure braids $P_n$, realised by an algebraic analogue of the topological tangle insertion, namely by replacing a bond by (a power of) a pure braid generator. To do so, we provide appropriate presentations for $P_n$ using cyclic relations and clasp generators, and extend them to presentations of $B_n$. We construct the monoid epimorphism $Φ: BB_n \to Bn$, mapping bonds to pure braid generators, which is the main result of the paper. Using the isomorphism from the singular braid monoid $SB_n$ to the tight bonded braid monoid $BB_n$, we extend $Φ$ to a new type of epimorphism $s Φ: SB_n \to B_n$. The epimorphisms $Φ$ and $s Φ$ are extended to families of epimorphisms $Φ_p$, $s Φ_p$, $p \in \mathbb{Z}$.

Wormhole Nucleation via Topological Surgery in Lorentzian Geometry

We construct a model for the nucleation of a wormhole within a Lorentzian spacetime by employing techniques from topological surgery and Morse theory. In our framework, a 0-surgery process describes the neighborhood of the nucleation point inside a compact region of spacetime, yielding a singular Lorentzian cobordism that connects two spacelike regions with different topologies. To avoid the singularity at the critical point of the Morse function, we employ the Misner trick of taking a connected sum with a closed 4-manifold -- namely $\mathbb{CP}^{2}$ -- to obtain an everywhere nondegenerate Lorentzian metric. This connected sum replaces the naked singularity with a region containing closed timelike curves. The obtained spacetime is nonsingular, but violates all the standard energy conditions. Our construction, thus, shows that a wormhole can be "created" without singularities in classical general relativity.

From annular to toroidal knotoids and their universal bracket polynomials

In this paper we study the theory of multi-knotoids in the annulus and in the torus, building up from the theory of planar knotoids to the theory of toroidal knotoids through the theory of annular knotoids. We introduce the concept of lifted annular and toroidal knotoids and examine inclusion relations arising naturally from the topology of the supporting manifolds. We also introduce the concept of mixed knotoids as special cases of planar knotoids, containing a fixed unknot for representing the thickened annulus or a fixed Hopf link for representing the thickened torus. We then extend the Turaev loop bracket for planar knotoids to bracket polynomials for annular and for toroidal knotoids, whose universal analogues recover the Kauffman bracket knotoid skein modules of the thickened annulus and the thickened torus.

Equivalence of Doubly Periodic Tangles

Doubly periodic tangles, or DP tangles, are embeddings of curves in the thickened plane that are periodically repeated in two directions. They are defined as universal covers of their generating cells, the flat motifs, which represent knots and links in the thickened torus, and which can be chosen in infinitely many ways. DP tangles are used in modeling materials and physical systems of entangled filaments. In this paper we establish the complete mathematical framework of the topological theory of DP tangles. We present an exhaustive analysis of DP tangle isotopies. These are distinguished in local isotopies and global isotopies. Our analysis yields the characterization of DP isotopy as an equivalence relation on the level of their (flat) motifs, called DP tangle equivalence. Along the way we also discuss motif minimality. We further generalize our results to other diagrammatic categories, namely framed, virtual, welded, singular, pseudo, tied and bonded DP tangles, which could be used in novel applications.

Topology and Algebra of Bonded Knots and Braids

In this paper we present a detailed study of \emph{bonded knots} and their related structures, integrating recent developments into a single framework. Bonded knots are classical knots endowed with embedded bonding arcs modeling physical or chemical bonds. We consider bonded knots in three categories (long, standard, and tight) according to the type of bonds, and in two categories, topological vertex and rigid vertex, according to the allowed isotopy moves, and we define invariants for each category. We then develop the theory of \emph{bonded braids}, the algebraic counterpart of bonded knots. We define the {\it bonded braid monoid}, with its generators and relations, and formulate the analogues of the Alexander and Markov theorems for bonded braids, including an $L$-equivalence for bonded braids. Next, we introduce \emph{enhanced bonded knots and braids}, incorporating two types of bonds (attracting and repelling) corresponding to different interactions. We define the enhanced bonded braid group and show how the bonded braid monoid embeds into this group. Finally, we study \emph{bonded knotoids}, which are open knot diagrams with bonds, and their closure operations, and we define the \emph{bonded closure}. We introduce \emph{bonded braidoids} as the algebraic counterpart of bonded knotoids. These models capture the topology of open chains with inter and intra-chain bonds and suggest new invariants for classifying biological macromolecules.

The Theory of Doubly Periodic Pseudo Tangles

Doubly periodic tangles (DP tangles) are configurations of curves embedded in the thickened plane, invariant under translations in two transversal directions. In this paper we extend the classical theory of DP tangles by introducing the theory of {\it doubly periodic pseudo tangles} (pseudo DP tangles), which incorporate undetermined crossings called {\it precrossings}, inspired by the theory of pseudo knots. Pseudo DP tangles are defined as liftings of spatial pseudo links in the thickened torus, called {\it pseudo motifs}, and are analyzed through diagrammatic methods that account for both local and global isotopies. We emphasize on {\it pseudo cover equivalence}, a concept defining equivalence between finite covers of pseudo motif diagrams. We investigate the notion of equivalence for these structures, leading to an analogue of the Reidemeister theorem for pseudo DP tangles. Furthermore, we address the complexities introduced by pseudo cover equivalence in defining minimal pseudo motif diagrams. This work contributes to the broader understanding of periodic entangled structures and can find applications in diverse fields such as textiles, materials science and crystallography due to their periodic nature.

From planar to annular to toroidal bracket polynomials for pseudo knots and links

Pseudo links are equivalence classes under Reidemeister-type moves of link diagrams containing crossings with undefined over and under information. In this paper, we extend the Kauffman bracket and Jones-type polynomials from planar pseudo links to annular and toroidal pseudo links and their respective lifts from the three-space to the solid torus and the thickened torus. Moreover, since annular and toroidal pseudo links can be represented as mixed links in the three-sphere, we also introduce the respective Kauffman bracket and Jones-type polynomials for their planar mixed link diagrams. Our work provides new tools for the study of annular and toroidal pseudo links.

From annular to toroidal pseudo knots

In this paper, we extend the theory of planar pseudo knots to the theories of annular and toroidal pseudo knots. Pseudo knots are defined as equivalence classes under Reidemeister-like moves of knot diagrams characterized by crossings with undefined over/under information. In the theories of annular and toroidal pseudo knots we introduce their respective lifts to the solid and the thickened torus. Then, we interlink these theories by representing annular and toroidal pseudo knots as planar ${\rm O}$-mixed and ${\rm H}$-mixed pseudo links. We also explore the inclusion relations between planar, annular and toroidal pseudo knots, as well as of ${\rm O}$-mixed and ${\rm H}$-mixed pseudo links. Finally, we extend the planar weighted resolution set to annular and toroidal pseudo knots, defining new invariants for classifying pseudo knots and links in the solid and in the thickened torus.

Directional Invariants of Doubly Periodic Tangles

In this paper we define novel topological invariants of doubly periodic tangles (DP tangles). DP tangles are embeddings of curves in the thickened plane with translational symmetries in two independent directions. We first organize the components of a DP tangle into different interlinked compounds, which are invariants of a DP tangle. The notion of interlinked compound leads to the classification of DP tangles according to their directional type. We then prove that the directional type is an invariant of DP tangles using the concept of axis-motif, which can be viewed as the blueprint of a DP tangle.

Passing from plat closure to standard closure of braids in $\mathbb{R}^3$, in handlebodies and in thickened surfaces

Given a knot or link in the form of plat closure of a braid, we describe an algorithm to obtain a braid representing the same knot or link with the standard closure, and vice-versa. We analyze the three cases of knots and links: in \(\mathbb{R}^3\), in handlebodies and in thickened surfaces. We show that the algorithm is quadratic in the number of crossings and loop generators of the braid when passing from plat to standard closure, while it is linear when passing from standard to plat closure.

The mixed Hilden braid group and the plat equivalence in handlebodies

Given a knot or link in the handlebody, $H_g$, of genus $g$ we prove that it can always be represented as the plat closure of a braid in $H_g$. We further establish the Hilden braid group for the handlebody, as a subgroup of the mixed braid group, whose elements have the first $g$ strands fixed forming the identity braid. We then formulate and prove the algebraic equivalence connecting mixed plats belonging to the same link isotopy class in $H_g$. The plat closure representation can be particularly suitable for computing knot invariants.

Knot invariants for rail knotoids

To each rail knotoid we associate two unoriented knots along with their oriented counterparts, thus deriving invariants for rail knotoids based on these associations. We then translate them to invariants of rail isotopy for rail arcs.

Finite type invariants for knotoids

We extend the theory of Vassiliev (or finite type) invariants for knots to knotoids using two different approaches. Firstly, we take closures on knotoids to obtain knots and we use the Vassiliev invariants for knots, proving that these are knotoid isotopy invariant. Secondly, we define finite type invariants directly on knotoids, by extending knotoid invariants to singular knotoid invariants via the Vassiliev skein relation. Then, for spherical knotoids we show that there are non-trivial type-1 invariants, in contrast with classical knot theory where type-1 invariants vanish. We give a complete theory of type-1 invariants for spherical knotoids, by classifying linear chord diagrams of order one, and we present examples arising from the affine index polynomial and the extended bracket polynomial.

Braidoids

Braidoids generalize the classical braids and form a counterpart theory to the theory of planar knotoids, just as the theory of braids does for the theory of knots. In this paper, we introduce basic notions of braidoids, a closure operation for braidoids, we prove an analogue of the Alexander theorem, that is, an algorithm that turns a knotoid into a braidoid, and we formulate and prove a geometric analogue of the Markov theorem for braidoids using the $L$-moves.

A generalized skein relation for Khovanov homology and a categorification of the $θ$-invariant

The Jones polynomial is a famous link invariant that can be defined diagrammatically via a skein relation. Khovanov homology is a richer link invariant that categorifies the Jones polynomial. Using spectral sequences, we obtain a skein-type relation satisfied by the Khovanov homology. Thanks to this relation, we are able to generalize the Khovanov homology in order to obtain a categorification of the $θ$-invariant, which is itself a generalization of the Jones polynomial.

New skein invariants of links

We introduce new skein invariants of links based on a procedure where we first apply the skein relation only to crossings of distinct components, so as to produce collections of unlinked knots. We then evaluate the resulting knots using a given invariant. A skein invariant can be computed on each link solely by the use of skein relations and a set of initial conditions. The new procedure, remarkably, leads to generalizations of the known skein invariants. We make skein invariants of classical links, $H[R]$, $K[Q]$ and $D[T]$, based on the invariants of knots, $R$, $Q$ and $T$, denoting the regular isotopy version of the Homflypt polynomial, the Kauffman polynomial and the Dubrovnik polynomial. We provide skein theoretic proofs of the well-definedness of these invariants. These invariants are also reformulated into summations of the generating invariants ($R$, $Q$, $T$) on sublinks of a given link $L$, obtained by partitioning $L$ into collections of sublinks.

Rail knotoids

We work on the notions of rail arcs and rail isotopy in $\mathbb{R}^3$, and we introduce the notions of rail knotoid diagrams and their equivalence. Our main result is that two rail arcs in $\mathbb{R}^3$ are rail isotopic if and only if their knotoid diagram projections onto the plane of the two lines which we call rails, are equivalent. We also make a connection between the rail isotopy in $\mathbb{R}^3$ and the knot theory of the handlebody of genus $2$.
