Orbital Ordering in the Charge Density Wave Phases of BaNi$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$

We use resonant X-ray scattering at the nickel L$_{2,3}$ edges to investigate the interplay between orbital degrees of freedom and charge density waves (CDW) in the superconductor BaNi$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$. Both the incommensurate and commensurate CDWs in this system exhibit strong resonant enhancement with distinct energy and polarization dependencies, indicative of orbital ordering. Azimuthal-angle-dependent measurements reveal a lowering of the local Ni site symmetry, consistent with monoclinic or lower point group symmetry. The scattering signatures of both CDWs are dominated by contributions from Ni $d_{xz,yz}$ orbitals, with similar orbital character despite their distinct wave vectors. These findings point to a shared orbital-driven formation mechanism and provide new insight into the symmetry breaking and orbital/nematic fluctuations in the high-temperature regime of the superconductor BaNi$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$.

Strain-induced structural change and nearly-commensurate diffuse scattering in the model high-temperature superconductor HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$

We investigate the strain response of underdoped HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$ (Hg1201), by synchrotron X-ray diffraction and corresponding simulations of thermal diffuse scattering. The compression in the crystallographic $a$ direction leads to relatively small expansion in the $b$ and $c$ directions, with Poisson ratios $ν_{ba}$=0.16 and $ν_{ca}$=0.11, respectively. However, the Cu-O distance in the $c$ direction exhibits a notable 0.9% increase at 1.1% $a$-axis compression. We further find strain-induced diffuse scattering which corresponds to a new type of two-dimensional charge correlation. Interestingly, this signal is insensitive to the onset of superconductivity and instead corresponds to a short-range, nearly commensurate modulation with a wave vector close to (0.5, 0, 0) and a correlation length of approximately four unit cells. It closely resembles the charge order theoretically predicted in the phase diagram of the spin-liquid model with resonating valence bonds on a square lattice.

Soft Mode Origin of Charge Ordering in Superconducting Kagome CsV$_3$Sb$_5$

Charge-density-wave (CDW) order and superconductivity coexist in the kagome metals AV$_3$Sb$_5$ (A=K, Cs, Rb), raising fundamental questions about the mechanisms driving their intertwined phases. Here we combine high-resolution inelastic X-ray scattering with first-principles calculations to uncover the origin of CDW formation in CsV$_3$Sb$_5$. Guided by structure factor analysis, we identify a soft phonon mode along the reciprocal M-L direction, with the strongest effect at the L point, where the elastic scattering intensity also grows most rapidly upon cooling. First-principles calculations incorporating lattice anharmonicity and electron-phonon coupling reproduce these observations and establish a soft-mode instability at the L point as the driving mechanism of CDW formation. Despite the weakly first-order character of the transition, our results unambiguously demonstrate that the CDW in CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ originates from a softened phonon, clarifying its microscopic origin and highlighting the central role of lattice dynamics in kagome metals.

Charge density waves and soft phonon evolution in the superconductor BaNi$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$

The superconductor BaNi$_2$As$_2$ exhibits a soft-phonon-driven, incommensurate charge density wave (I-CDW) which is accompanied by a small orthorhombic structural phase transition. Upon further cooling, BaNi$_2$As$_2$ undergoes a first-order structural transition to a triclinic phase in which a commensurate CDW (C-CDW) appears. The relationship and interplay between the I-CDW, C-CDW and structural phase transitions has remained elusive. To investigate this issue, we present a complementary study of thermal diffuse X-Ray scattering and inelastic X-Ray scattering for phosphorus substituted BaNi$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$ $(x\lessapprox0.12)$ and down to 2.2 K. We show that most of the diffuse scattering signal can be well described by first-principles lattice dynamics calculations. Furthermore, we find that although phosphorus substitution rapidly suppresses the structural transition temperatures, the temperature dependence of the correlation length of the I-CDW fluctuations and the formation of Bragg-like superstructure peaks associated with long-range ordering of this order depends only weakly on the substitution level. Finally, we present the absence of signatures of the I-CDW to C-CDW or triclinic transition in the lattice dynamics, indicating that these instabilities are not (soft) phonon driven.

The high-pressure phase diagram of BaNi$_2$As$_2$: unconventional charge-density-waves and structural phase transitions

Structural phase transitions accompanied by incommensurate and commensurate charge density wave (CDW) modulations of unconventional nature have been reported in BaNi$_2$As$_2$, a nonmagnetic cousin of the parent compound of Fe-based superconductors, BaFe$_2$As$_2$. The strong dependence of the structural and CDW transitions of BaNi$_2$As$_2$ on isoelectronic substitutions alongside original dynamical lattice effects suggests strong tunability of the electronic phase of the system through structural effects. Here, we present a comprehensive synchrotron x-ray diffraction and first-principles calculation study of the evolution of the crystal structure and lattice instabilities of BaNi$_2$As$_2$ as a function of temperature and hydrostatic pressure (up to 12 GPa). We report a cascade of pressure-induced structural phase transitions and electronic instabilities up to 10 GPa, above which all CDW superstructures disappear. We reveal that the stable high-pressure phase consists of planar Ni zigzag chains, from which the surrounding As atoms have been pushed away. This yields a strong reduction of the interlayer As-As distance (along the original c axis), akin to what is observed in the collapsed tetragonal structure of other pnictides, albeit here with a monoclinic structure. The discovery of polymorphs in the pressure-temperature phase diagram of BaNi$_2$As$_2$ emphasizes the importance of the relative Ni-Ni and Ni-As bond lengths in controlling the electronic ground state of this compound and increases our understanding of viable electronic phases under extreme conditions.

Strong electron-phonon coupling and enhanced phonon Grüneisen parameters in valence-fluctuating metal EuPd$_2$Si$_2$

We study the valence crossover and strong electron-phonon coupling of EuPd$_2$Si$_2$ by polarization-resolved Raman spectroscopy. The fully-symmetric phonon mode shows strongly asymmetric lineshape at low temperature, indicating Fano-type interaction between this mode and a continuum of electron-hole excitations. Moreover, the frequency and linewidth of the phonon modes exhibit anomalies across the valence-crossover temperature, suggesting the coupling between valence fluctuations and lattice vibration. In particular, two phonon modes show significantly enhanced Grüneisen parameter, suggesting proximity to a critical elasticity regime. The relative contribution of the structural change and valence change to the phonon anomalies is evaluated by density functional theory calculations.

Disentangling lattice and electronic instabilities in the excitonic insulator candidate Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$ by nonequilibrium spectroscopy

Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$ is an excitonic insulator candidate showing the semiconductor/semimetal-to-insulator (SI) transition below $T_{\text{c}}$ = 326 K. However, since a structural transition accompanies the SI transition, deciphering the role of electronic and lattice degrees of freedom in driving the SI transition has remained controversial. Here, we investigate the photoexcited nonequilibrium state in Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$ using pump-probe Raman and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopies. The combined nonequilibrium spectroscopic measurements of the lattice and electronic states reveal the presence of a photoexcited metastable state where the insulating gap is suppressed, but the low-temperature structural distortion is preserved. We conclude that electron correlations play a vital role in the SI transition of Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$.

An Electronic Nematic Liquid in BaNi$_2$As$_2$

Understanding the organizing principles of interacting electrons and the emergence of novel electronic phases is a central endeavor of condensed matter physics. Electronic nematicity, in which the discrete rotational symmetry in the electron fluid is broken while the translational one remains unaffected, is a prominent example of such a phase. It has proven ubiquitous in correlated electron systems, and is of prime importance to understand Fe-based superconductors. Here, we find that fluctuations of such broken symmetry are exceptionally strong over an extended temperature range above phase transitions in \bnap, the nickel homologue to the Fe-based systems. This provides evidence for a type of electronic nematicity, dynamical in nature, which exhibits an unprecedented coupling to the underlying crystal lattice. Fluctuations between degenerate nematic configurations cause a splitting of phonon lines, without lifting degeneracies nor breaking symmetries, akin to spin liquids in magnetic systems.

In-plane Isotropy of the Low Energy Phonon Anomalies in YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{6+x}$

We study the temperature dependence of the low energy phonons in the $(H, 0, L)$ reciprocal plane of the highly ordered ortho-II YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.55}$ cuprate high temperature superconductor by means of high-resolution inelastic x-ray scattering. Anomalies associated with the emergence of long-range charge density wave (CDW) fluctuations are observed, and are qualitatively similar to those previously observed in the $(0, K, L)$ plane. This confirms the unconventional nature of this bi-dimensional CDW, which is not soft-phonon driven. With the support of first principles calculations, the symmetry of the anomalous phonon is identified and is found to match that of the charge modulation. This suggests in turn that these anomalies originate from a direct coupling between the phonons and the collective CDW excitations.

Evidence for nesting driven charge density waves instabilities in a quasi-two-dimensional material: LaAgSb2

Since their theoretical prediction by Peierls in the 30s, charge density waves (CDW) have been one of the most commonly encountered electronic phases in low dimensional metallic systems. The instability mechanism originally proposed combines Fermi surface nesting and electron-phonon coupling but is, strictly speaking, only valid in one dimension. In higher dimensions, its relevance is questionable as sharp maxima in the static electronic susceptibility χ(q) are smeared out, and are, in many cases, unable to account for the periodicity of the observed charge modulations. Here, we investigate the quasi twodimensional LaAgSb2, which exhibits two CDW transitions, by a combination of diffuse xray scattering, inelastic x-ray scattering and ab initio calculations. We demonstrate that the CDW formation is driven by phonons softening. The corresponding Kohn anomalies are visualized in 3D through the momentum distribution of the x-ray diffuse scattering intensity. We show that they can be quantitatively accounted for by considering the electronic susceptibility calculated from a Dirac-like band, weighted by anisotropic electron-phonon coupling. This remarkable agreement sheds new light on the importance of Fermi surface nesting in CDW formation.

Persistent low-energy phonon broadening near the charge order $q$-vector in bilayer cuprate Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$

We report a persistent low-energy phonon broadening around $q_{B} \sim 0.28$ r.l.u. along the Cu-O bond direction in the high-$T_c$ cuprate Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ (Bi-2212). We show that such broadening exists both inside and outside the conventional charge density wave (CDW) phase, via temperature dependent measurements in both underdoped and heavily overdoped samples. Combining inelastic hard x-ray scattering, diffuse scattering, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, and resonant soft x-ray scattering at the Cu $L_3$-edge, we exclude the presence of a CDW in the heavily overdoped Bi-2212 similar to that observed in the underdoped systems. Finally, we discuss the origin of such anisotropic low-energy phonon broadening, and its potential precursory role to the CDW phase in the underdoped region.

Raman scattering from Higgs mode oscillations in the two-dimensional antiferromagnet Ca$_2$RuO$_4$

We present and analyze Raman spectra of the Mott insulator Ca$_2$RuO$_4$, whose quasi-two-dimensional antiferromagnetic order has been described as a condensate of low-lying spin-orbit excitons with angular momentum $J_{eff}=1$. In the $A_g$ polarization geometry, the amplitude (Higgs) mode of the spin-orbit condensate is directly probed in the scalar channel, thus avoiding infrared-singular magnon contributions. In the $B_{1g}$ geometry, we observe a single-magnon peak as well as two-magnon and two-Higgs excitations. Model calculations using exact diagonalization quantitatively agree with the observations. Together with recent neutron scattering data, our study provides strong evidence for excitonic magnetism in Ca$_2$RuO$_4$ and points out new perspectives for research on the Higgs mode in two dimensions.

Strong anharmonicity induces quantum melting of charge density wave in 2H-NbSe$\_2$ under pressure

The interplay between charge density wave (CDW) order and superconductivity has attracted much attention. This is the central issue of along standing debate in simple transition metal dichalcogenides without strong electronic correlations, such as 2H-NbSe$\_2$, in which twosuch phases coexist. The importance of anisotropic electron-phonon interaction has been recently highlighted from both theoretical and experimental point of view, and explains some of the key features of the formation of the CDW in this system. On the other hand, other aspects, such as the effects of anharmonicity, remain poorly understood despite their manifest importance in such soft-phonon driven phase transition. At the theoretical level in particular, their prohibitive computational price usually prevents their investigation within conventional perturbative approaches. Here, we address this issue using a combination of high resolution inelastic X-ray scattering measurements of the phonon dispersion, as afunction of temperature and pressure, with state of the art ab initio calculations. By explicitly taking into account anharmonic effects, we obtain an accurate, quantitative, description of the (P,T) dependence of the phonon spectrum, accounting for the rapid destruction of the CDW under pressure by zero mode vibrations - or quantum fluctuations - of the lattice. The low-energy longitudinal acoustic mode that drives the CDW transition barely contributes to superconductivity, explaining the insensitivity of the superconducting critical temperature to the CDW transition.
