A Systematic NLTE Study of Very Metal-Poor Stars with Metallicity Down to $-4.3$ dex. II. Lithium Abundance and New Insight to the Lithium Plateau

Metal-poor stars are crucially important for understanding the early Galaxy, first stars, and the Universe. In this series of papers, we present a homogeneous non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) abundances analysis of 12 elements for 103 very/extremely metal-poor (VMP/EMP) stars with metallicity down to $-4.3$ dex. The sample was selected from the LAMOST survey and observed by the high-resolution spectroscopy of Subaru. In this paper, we present the NLTE abundances and evolution of lithium in these stars. We report different lithium behaviors corresponding to different evolutionary stages and their signatures: 1) The Spite Plateau shows a slightly positive slope, indicating increasing lithium abundance with increasing metallicity. Most significantly, it appears to extend to lower metallicities as previously suggested, calling into question the reality of the so-called 'meltdown' at low metallicity; 2) We confirm a lithium plateau for lower red giant branch (LRGB) stars with A(Li) $= 1.13$ dex in our sample, while lithium abundance drops rapidly to A(Li)$<0.5$ as stars continue to evolve to higher stage. 3) We identify four Li-rich stars in our sample across different evolutionary stages, showing complex and multiple lithium production mechanisms in VMP/EMP stars. These findings suggest that early Galactic lithium enrichment results from a complex interplay between depletion and production processes.

Chemical abundances and doppler imaging of the Ap Si/He-wk star HD 100357

We present the results of time-resolved photometry, abundance analysis and Doppler imaging of an Ap star, HD 100357. The {\it TESS} photometry revealed rotational modulation with a period of 1.6279247 days. Upon inspecting the residuals after removing the rotational period and its harmonics, we found additional frequencies around 15.8054 d$^{-1}$ which we later confirmed with ground-based observations as originating from a nearby star. Using high-resolution spectroscopy, we identified HD 100357 as an Ap Si/He-wk star exhibiting rotational modulation caused by surface abundance spots. The stellar parameters of HD 100357 were determined as $T_{\rm eff}$ = 11,850 K, $\log g$ = 4.57, $\upsilon\sin i$ = 60 km\,s$^{-1}$, and an inclination angle $i$ = 72$^{\circ}$. The detailed abundance analysis revealed strongly overabundant stratified silicon, an overabundance of iron-peak elements and rare earth elements combined with remarkably deficient helium. Mapping of Fe and Cr abundances revealed the existence of ring-shaped regions with a lower concentration of the elements. Their geometry might reflect the orientation of the hypothetical magnetic field of the star, oriented $\sim$90$^{\circ}$ to the rotational axis. HD 100357, with its strong chemical peculiarities and indications of possible magnetic fields, represents an interesting candidate for follow-up spectropolarimetric observations aimed at investigating its magnetic field topology and stellar activity.

NLTE abundances of Eu for a sample of metal-poor stars in the Galactic Halo and Metal-poor Disk with 1D and <3D> models

Accurate measurements of europium abundances in cool stars are essential for an enhanced understanding of the r-process mechanisms. We measure the abundance of Eu in solar spectra and a sample of metal-poor stars in the Galactic halo and metal-poor disk, with the metallicities ranging from \GG{$-2.4$} to $-0.5$ dex, using non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) line formation. We compare these measurements with Galactic Chemical Evolution (GCE) models to \GG{explore the impact of the NLTE corrections on the contribution of r-process site in Galactic chemical evolution. In this work, we use NLTE line formation, as well as one-dimensional (1D) hydrostatic and spatial averages of 3D hydrodynamical ($<$3D$>$) model atmospheres to measure the abundance of Eu based on both the Eu II 4129 \AA\ and Eu II 6645 \AA\ lines for solar spectra and metal-poor stars. We find that \GG{for Eu II 4129 \AA\ line the NLTE modelling leads to higher (0.04 dex) solar Eu abundance in 1D and higher (0.07 dex) in \GG{$<$3D$>$} NLTE while} NLTE modelling leads to higher (0.01 dex) solar Eu abundance in 1D and lower (0.03 dex) in \GG{$<$3D$>$} NLTE for Eu II 6645 \AA\ line. Although the NLTE corrections for the Eu II $\lambda$ 4129 \AA\ and Eu II $\lambda$ 6645 \AA\ lines are opposite, the discrepancy between the abundances derived from these individual lines reduces after applying NLTE corrections, highlighting the critical role of NLTE abundance determinations. By comparing these measurements with Galactic chemical evolution (GCE) models, we find that the \G{amount of NLTE correction does not require significant change of the parameters for Eu production} in the GCE models.

The Kinematic and Chemical Properties of the Close-in Planet Host Star 8 UMi

A recent study by Hon et al. reported that a close-in planet around the red clump star, 8 UMi, should have been engulfed during the expansion phase of its parent star's evolution. They explained the survival of this exoplanet through a binary-merger channel for 8 UMi. The key to testing this formation scenario is to derive the true age of this star: is it an old "imposter" resulting from a binary merger, or a genuinely young red clump giant? To accomplish this, we derive kinematic and chemical properties for 8 UMi using astrometric data from {\it Gaia} DR3 and the element-abundance pattern measured from a high-resolution ($R \sim 75,000$) spectrum taken by SOPHIE. Our analysis shows that 8 UMi is a normal thin-disk star with orbital rotation speed of $\it{V}_\mathrm{\phi}=\mathrm{244.96 km s^{-1}}$, and possesses a Solar metallicity ([Fe/H] $= -0.05 \pm 0.07$) and $\alpha$-element abundance ratio ([$\alpha$/Fe] $= +0.01 \pm 0.03$). By adopting well-established relationships between age and space velocities/elemental abundances, we estimate a kinematic age of $3.50^{+3.00}_{-2.00}$ Gyr, and a chemical age of $3.25^{+2.50}_{-1.50}$ Gyr from [C/N] and $3.47 \pm 1.96$ Gyr from [Y/Mg] for 8 UMi, respectively. These estimates are consistent with the isochrone-fitting age ($1.90^{+1.15}_{-0.30}$ Gyr) of 8 UMi, but are all much younger than the timescale required in a binary-merger scenario. This result challenges the binary-merger model; the existence of such a closely orbiting exoplanet around a giant star remains a mystery yet to be resolved.

A small scale structure model of jet based on the observation of microvariability

We developed a multi-region radiation model for the evolution of flux and spectral index with time. In this model, each perturbation component in the jet produces an independent flare. The model can be used to study the decomposition of microvariability, the structural scale of the perturbed components, and the physical parameters of the acceleration processes. Based on the shock acceleration model in relativistic jet, the influence of acceleration parameters on multiband flare parameters is calculated. We present the results of multiband optical microvariability of the blazar BL Lacertae observed performed during 89 nights in the period from 2009 to 2021, and use them as a sample for model fitting. The results show that both the amplitude and duration of flares decomposed from the microvariability light curves confirm a lognormal distribution. The time delays between the optical bands follow the normal distribution and amount to several minutes, that corroborates with both predictions from the theoretical model and the calculation of the discrete correlation function (DCF). Using the spectral index evolution and the simultaneous fitting of the multiband variability curves, we obtain the acceleration and radiation parameters to constrain and distinguish the origins of different flares. Based on the flare decomposition, we can well reproduce the time-domain evolution trends of the optical variation and energy spectrum, and explain the various redder-when-brighter (RWB) and/or bluer-when-brighter (BWB) behavior.

NLTE analysis for Y I and Y II in atmospheres of F-G-K stars

The non-local thermodynamical equilibrium (NLTE) line formation of Y I and Y II is considered in 1D LTE model atmospheres of F-G-K-type stars. The model atom was constructed with the most up-to-date atomic data, including quantum cross sections and rate coefficients for transitions in inelastic collisions of Y I and Y II with hydrogen atoms. For seven reference stars, we obtained an agreement between NLTE abundances inferred from the two ionization stages, while the difference in LTE abundance (Y I - Y II) can reach up to -0.31 dex. In the atmospheres of F-G-K-type stars, for both Y I and Y II lines, the NLTE abundance corrections are positive. In solar metallicity stars, the NLTE abundance corrections for Y II lines do not exceed 0.12 dex, while in atmospheres of metal-poor stars they do not exceed 0.21 dex. For Y I lines, the NLTE abundance corrections can reach up to 0.5 dex. We determined the yttrium NLTE abundances for a sample of 65 F and G dwarfs and subgiants in the -2.62~$\leq$~[Fe/H]~$\leq$~+0.24 metallicity range, using high-resolution spectra. For stars with [Fe/H]~$\leq$~-1.5, [Y/Fe] versus [Fe/H] diagram reveals positive trend with an average value of [Y/Fe]~$\simeq$~0. For metal-poor stars, among Sr, Y, and Zr, the arrangement [Sr/Fe] < [Y/Fe] < [Zr/Fe] remains consistent. The current study is useful for the Galactic chemical evolution research. The model atom will be applied for NLTE yttrium abundance determination in very metal-poor stars studied with LAMOST and Subaru.

Theoretical Study of Inelastic Processes in Collisions of Y and Y$^+$ with Hydrogen Atom

Utilizing a simplified quantum model approach, the low-energy inelastic collision processes between yttrium atoms (ions) and hydrogen atoms have been studied. Rate coefficients corresponding to the mutual neutralization, ion-pair formation, excitation, and de-excitation processes for the above collision systems have been provided in the temperature range of 1000-10000K. 3 ionic states and 73 covalent states are considered in calculations for the collisions of yttrium atoms with hydrogen atoms, which include 6 molecular symmetries and 4074 partial inelastic reaction processes. For the collisions of yttrium ions with hydrogen atoms, 1 ionic state and 116 covalent states are included, which related to 3 molecular symmetries and 13572 partial inelastic collision processes. It is found that the rate coefficients for the mutual neutralization process have a maximum at T = 6000K, which is an order of magnitude higher than those of other processes. Notably, the positions of optimal windows for the collisions of yttrium atoms and ions with hydrogen atoms are found near electronic binding energy -2eV (Y) and -4.4eV (Y$^+$), respectively. The scattering channels located in or near these optimal windows have intermediate-to-large rate coefficients (greater than $10^{-12}$ cm$^3$s$^{-1}$). The reported data should be useful in the study of non-local thermodynamic equilibrium modeling.

Exploration of the origin of 2020 X-ray outburst in OJ 287

Research into OJ 287 has been ongoing for many years. In 2020 April-June, this source underwent the second highest X-ray outburst (second only to the 2016-2017 outburst) and the mechanism of this outburst is still under debate. In this paper, we discuss two scenarios to explore the origin of the outburst: an after-effect of a black hole-disc impact and a tidal disruption event (TDE). We present the weak correlations of the spectral index versus X-ray flux and the hardness ratio (HR) versus the soft X-ray flux during the outburst, and these features are different from the case in the quiescent state. The correlations are compared with those of the 2016-2017 outburst with the highest X-ray flux in monitoring history. Analysis of the outbursts in 2016-2017 and 2020 shows that the expected time of the X-ray outburst, based on the theory of the after-effect of the black hole-disc impact and the estimation of available data, is inconsistent with historical observations. The soft X-ray spectra, the barely temporal evolution of colour, and the evolution of the HR mean that the 2020 outburst shares similar features with the 2016-2017 outburst, which was considered as a possible candidate for a TDE. Additionally, we find that the predictions of full TDEs ($t^{-5/3}$) and partial TDEs ($t^{-9/4}$) for the soft X-ray decay light curve are well fitted. Our analysis suggests that the 2020 outburst in OJ 287 is probably related to the TDE candidate.

Spectroscopic Study of M33 with LAMOST survey. I. Chemical gradients from nebulae

Morphological and chemical structures of M33 are investigated with LAMOST DR7 survey. Physical parameters, extinction, chemical composition of He, N, O, Ne, S, Cl, Ar (where available), and radial velocities were determined for 110 nebulae (95 H\ii\ regions and 15 PNe) in M33. Among them, 8 PNe and 55 H\ii\ regions in M33 are newly discovered. We obtained the following O abundance gradients: $-$0.199$_{-0.030}^{+0.030}$ dex $R_{25}^{-1}$ (based on 95 H\ii\ regions), $-$0.124$_{-0.036}^{+0.036}$ dex $R_{25}^{-1}$ (based on 93 H\ii\ regions), and $-$0.207$_{-0.174}^{+0.160}$ dex $R_{25}^{-1}$ (based on 21 H\ii\ region), utilizing abundances from N2 at O3N2 diagnostics and the $T_{\rm e}$-sensitive method, respectively. The He, N, Ne, S, and Ar gradients resulted in slopes of $-$0.179$_{-0.146}^{+0.145}$, $-$0.431$_{-0.281}^{+0.282}$, $-$0.171$_{-0.239}^{+0.234}$, $-$0.417$_{-0.182}^{+0.174}$, $-$0.340$_{-0.157}^{+0.156}$, respectively, utilizing abundances from the $T_{\rm e}$-sensitive method. Our results confirm the existence of negative axisymmetric global metallicity distribution that is assumed in the literature. We noticed one new WC star candidate and one transition WR WN/C candidate. The grand-design pattern of spiral structure of M33 is presented.

The X-ray outburst of PG 1553+113: A precession effect of two jets in the supermassive black hole binary system

Blazar PG 1553+113 is thought to be a host of supermassive black hole binary (SMBHB) system. A 2.2-year quasi-periodicity in the $\gamma$-ray light curve was detected, possibly result of jet precession. Motivated by the previous studies based on the $\gamma$-ray data, we analyzed the X-ray light curve and spectra observed during 2012--2020. The 2.2-year quasi-periodicity might be consistent with the main-flare recurrence in the X-ray light curve. When a weak rebrightening in the $\gamma$-ray was observed, a corresponding relatively strong brightening in the X-ray light curve can be identified. The "harder-when-brighter" tendency in both X-ray main and weak flares was shown, as well as a weak "softer-when-brighter" behavior for the quiescent state. We explore the possibility that the variability in the X-ray band can be interpreted with two-jet precession scenario. Using the relation between jets and accretion discs, we derive the primary black hole mass $\simeq 3.47\times 10^8M_{\odot}$ and mass of the secondary one $\simeq 1.40\times 10^8M_{\odot}$, and their mass ratio $\sim 0.41$.

Spectroscopic evidence for a large spot on the dimming Betelgeuse

During October 2019 and March 2020, the luminous red supergiant Betelgeuse demonstrated an unusually deep minimum of its brightness. It became fainter by more than one magnitude and this is the most significant dimming observed in the recent decades. While the reason for the dimming is debated, pre-phase of supernova explosion, obscuring dust, or changes in the photosphere of the star were suggested scenarios. Here, we present spectroscopic studies of Betelgeuse using high-resolution and high signal-to- noise ratio near-infrared spectra obtained at Weihai Observatory on four epochs in 2020 covering the phases of during and after dimming. We show that the dimming episode is caused by the dropping of its effective temperature by at least 170 K on 2020 January 31, that can be attributed to the emergence of a large dark spot on the surface of the star.

A possible tidal disruption event candidate in the black hole binary system of OJ 287

The BL Lacertae OJ 287 is a supermassive black holes binary (SMBHB) system with complex physics of its irregular flares. During 2016 October -- 2017 April period, a surprising outburst in the X-ray, UV and optical bands was detected, while no variability was seen in the $\gamma$-ray light curve. During the outburst, the X-ray light curves were dominated by the soft X-rays, whose peak in the luminosity was $\sim$ $10^{46}\text{erg}~\text{s}^{-1}$ -- more than 10 times higher than the mean level before the outburst -- and a "softer-when-brighter" phenomenon was exhibited. These above phenomena have been reported by some previous works. The hardness ratio showed negligible evolution with flare time and soft X-ray luminosity. Critically, the luminosity of the soft X-rays decayed following a power law of $t^{-5/3}$ which occurs in most tidal disruption events (TDEs), and similar trend can be seen in UV and optical bands during the soft X-ray declining period. Helium and oxygen narrow emission lines are strengthened prominently in the optical spectra of postoutburst epochs, that could be attributed to the surrounding gas appeared due to TDE. We discuss three possible origins of the event, including the jet's precession, the aftereffect of the black hole-disk impaction and the TDE. Our results show that the TDE is the more likely scenario to explain the outburst.

Neon Abundances of B-stars in the Solar Neighborhood

We constructed a comprehensive model atom for NeI -- NeII using the most up-to-date atomic data available and evaluated the non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) line formation for NeI and NeII in classical 1D models representing the atmospheres of B-type stars. We find that the large NLTE strengthening of the NeI lines corresponding to the 2p$^5$3p $-$ 2p$^5$3s transitions array occurs due to extremely small photoionization cross-sections of 2p$^5$3s levels that leads to strong overpopulation of these levels relative to their LTE populations. The deviations from LTE for the most NeII lines are small and do not exceed 0.11~dex in the absolute value. We analysed 20 lines of NeI and 13 lines of NeII for twenty-four B-type stars in the temperature range of 10\,400 $\le$ \Teff\ $\le$ 33\,400~K. For five stars, the NLTE leads to consistent abundances of NeI and NeII, while the difference in LTE abundance can reach up to 0.50~dex. The using of the experimental oscillator strengths recently measured by Piracha et al. (2015) leads to smaller line-by-line scatter for the most investigated stars. The averaged neon abundance in twenty-four B-type stars in solar neighborhood is 8.02$\pm$0.05. This value may provide indirect constraints on solar photospheric neon abundance.

The NLTE Analyses of Carbon Emission Lines in the Atmospheres of O and B type Stars

We present a model atom for C I - C II - C III - C IV using the most up-to-date atomic data and evaluated the non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) line formation in classical 1D atmospheric models of O-B-type stars. Our models predict the emission lines of C II 9903~Å and 18535~Å to appear at effective temperature \Teff~$\geq$~17\,500~K, those of C II 6151~Å and 6461~Å to appear at \Teff~$>$~25\,000~K, and those of C III 5695, 6728--44, 9701--17~Å to appear at \Teff~$\geq$~35\,000~K (log~$g$=4.0). Emission occurs in the lines of minority species, where the photoionization-recombination mechanism provides a depopulation of the lower levels to a greater extent than the upper levels. For C II 9903 and 18535~Å, the upper levels are mainly populated from C III reservoir through the Rydberg states. For C III 5695 and 6728--44~Å, the lower levels are depopulated due to photon losses in UV transitions at 885, 1308, and 1426--28~Å which become optically thin in the photosphere. We analysed the lines of C I, C II, C III, and C IV for twenty-two O-B-type stars with temperature range between 15\,800 $\leq$~\Teff~$\leq$ 38\,000~K. Abundances from emission lines of C I, C II and C III are in agreement with those from absorption ones for most of the stars. We obtained log~$ε_{\rm C}$=8.36$\pm$0.08 from twenty B-type stars, that is in line with the present-day Cosmic Abundance Standard. The obtained carbon abundances in 15~Mon and HD~42088 from emission and absorption lines are 8.27$\pm$0.11 and 8.31$\pm$0.11, respectively.

Statistical analysis of micro-variability properties of the blazar S5 0716+714

The typical blazar S5 0716$+$714 is very interesting due to its rapid and large amplitude variability and high duty cycle of micro-variability in optical band. We analyze the observations in I, R and V bands obtained with the $1.0m$ telescope at Weihai observatory of Shandong University from 2011 to 2018. The model of synchrotron radiation from turbulent cells in a jet has been proposed as a mechanism for explaining micro-variability seen in blazar light curves. Parameters such as the sizes of turbulent cells, the enhanced particle densities, and the location of the turbulent cells in the jet can be studied using this model. The model predicts a time lag between variations as observed in different frequency bands. Automatic model fitting method for micro-variability is developed, and the fitting results of our multi-frequency micro-variability observations support the model. The results show that both the amplitude and duration of flares decomposed from the micro-variability light curves confirm to the log-normal distribution. The turbulent cell size is within the range of about 5 to 55 AU, and the time lags of the micro-variability flares between the I-R and R-V bands should be several minutes. The time lags obtained from the turbulence model are consistent with the fitting statistical results, and the time lags of flares are correlated with the time lags of the whole light curve.

Metal-poor stars observed with the automated planet finder telescope. I. Discovery of five carbon-enhanced metal-poor stars from LAMOST

We report on the discovery of five carbon-enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) stars in the metallicity range of $-3.3<$ [Fe/H] $<-2.4$. These stars were selected from the LAMOST DR3 low-resolution (R$ \sim$ 2,000) spectroscopic database as metal-poor candidates and followed-up with high-resolution spectroscopy (R$ \sim$110,000) with the LICK/APF. Stellar parameters and individual abundances for 25 chemical elements (from Li to Eu) are presented for the first time. These stars exhibit chemical abundance patterns that are similar to those reported in other literature studies of very and extremely metal-poor stars. One of our targets, J2114$-$0616, shows high enhancement in carbon ([C/Fe]=1.37), nitrogen ([N/Fe]= 1.88), barium ([Ba/Fe]=1.00), and europium ([Eu/Fe]=0.84). Such chemical abundance pattern suggests that J2114$-$0616 can be classified as CEMP-r/s star. In addition, the star J1054+0528 can be classified as a CEMP-rI star, with [Eu/Fe]=0.44 and [Ba/Fe]=$-$0.52. The other stars in our sample show no enhancements in neutron-capture elements and can be classified as CEMP-no stars. We also performed a kinematic and dynamical analysis of the sample stars based on Gaia DR2 data. The kinematic parameters, orbits, and binding energy of these stars, show that J2114$-$0616 is member of the outer halo population, while the remaining stars belong to the inner halo population but with an accreted origin. Collectively, these results add important constraints on the origin and evolution of CEMP stars as well as on their possible formation scenarios.

NLTE line formation for Mg\ione\ and Mg\ii\ in atmospheres of B-A-F-G-K stars

Non-local thermodynamical equilibrium (NLTE) line formation for Mg I and Mg II lines is considered in classical 1D-LTE model atmospheres of the Sun and 17 stars with reliable atmospheric parameters and in a broad range of spectral types: 3900 $\le$ \Teff\ $\le$ 17500~K, 1.1 $\le$ log$g$ $\le$ 4.7, and $-$2.6 $\le$ [Fe/H] $\le$ +0.4. We find that, for each star, NLTE leads to smaller line-to-line scatter. For 10 stars, NLTE leads to consistent abundances from Mg I and Mg II, while the difference in the LTE abundance varies between $-0.21$ and +0.23~dex. We obtain an abundance discrepancy betweeen Mg I and Mg II in the two very metal-poor stars, HD 140283 and HD 84937. An origin of these abundance differences remains unclear. Our standard NLTE modelling predicts Mg I emission lines at 7.736, 11.789, 12.224, and 12.321 $μ$m in the atmospheres with \Teff\ $\le$ 7000 K. We reproduce well the Mg I 12.2 and 12.3 $μ$m emission lines in Procyon. However, for the Sun and 3 K-giants, the predicted Mg I emission lines are too weak compared with the observations. For stars with 7000 K $\le$ \Teff\ $\leq$ 17500 K, we recommend the Mg II 3848, 3850, 4384, 4390, 4427, and 4433 Å lines for Mg abundance determinations even at the LTE assumption due to their small NLTE effects. The Mg I 4167, 4571, 4702, 5528, 5167, 5172, and 5183 Å lines can be safely used in the LTE analysis of stars with 7000 K $<$ \Teff\ $\leq$ 8000 K. For the hotter stars, with \Teff\ from 8000 to 9500 K, the NLTE effects are minor only for Mg\ione\ 4167, 4702, and 4528 Å.

NLTE abundances of C, O, Ca, Ti, and Fe in the reference BAF-type stars

We present accurate methods of abundance determination based on the non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) line formation for carbon, oxygen, calcium, titanium, and iron in the atmospheres of BAF-type stars. For C I-II, O I, Ca I-II, and Ti I-II, their comprehensive model atoms were described in our previous papers. A fairly complete model atom of Fe I-II is first applied in this study. We determine the NLTE abundances of the nine BAF-type stars with well-determined atmospheric parameters, using high-resolution and high signal-to-noise ratio spectral observations in the broad wavelength range, from the UV to the IR. For C, Ca, Ti, and Fe, NLTE leads to consistent abundances from the lines of the two ionisation stages. The C I, Ca II, and Fe II emission lines were detected in the near IR spectrum of the late B-type subgiant star HD 160762. They are well reproduced in the classical model atmosphere, when applying our NLTE methods.
