A Unified Josephson Dynamics Perspective for Single-Cavity BECs: From Self-Trapping to Dynamical Phase Transitions

We investigate a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) strongly coupled to a single optical cavity, effectively described by a mean-field Dicke model supplemented with interatomic nonlinearities. Here, we propose a unified theoretical framework demonstrating that macroscopic quantum self-trapping (MQST) natively emerges between two internal atomic energy levels within a single cavity. By deriving the dimensionless semiclassical Josephson equations (SJE) governing this purely internal-state architecture, we analytically determine the critical nonlinear threshold and intrinsic phase shift mechanism for the phase transition. Based on this framework, we present two approaches for manipulating quantum phase transitions: dynamic in-situ tuning via photon pumping and inducing non-equilibrium dynamical phase transitions (DPT) via real-time parameter quenches. Furthermore, we rigorously prove that the effective charging energy driving this system scales exactly as one-quarter of the effective spin-dependent interaction energy -- the precise parameter governing recent spin-orbit coupled (SOC) BEC experiments. Incorporating realistic $^{87}$Rb atomic parameters, we substantiate that these single-cavity MQST and transition dynamics are highly feasible for observation under current state-of-the-art cold-atom technologies.

Photonic analogue of Josephson effect in a dual-species optical-lattice cavity

We extend the idea of quantum phase transitions of light in the photonic Bose-Hubbard model with interactions to two atomic species by a self-consistent mean field theory. The excitation of two-level atoms interacting with coherent photon fields is analyzed with a finite temperature dependence of the order parameters. Four ground states of the system are found, including an isolated Mott-insulator phase and three different superfluid phases. Like two weakly coupled superconductors, our proposed dual-species lattice system shows a photonic analogue of Josephson effect. The dynamics of the proposed two species model provides a promising quantum simulator for possible quantum information processes.

Quantum Phase Transitions of Light in the Dicke-Bose-Hubbard model

We extend the idea of quantum phase transitions of light in atom-photon system with Dicke-Bose-Hubbard model for arbitrary number of two-level atoms. The formulations of eigenenergies, effective Rabi frequencies, and critical chemical potentials for two atoms are derived. With a self-consistent method, we obtain a complete phase diagram for two two-level atoms on resonance, which indicates the transition from Mott insulator to superfluidity and with a mean excitations diagram for confirmation. We illustrate the generality of the method by constructing the dressed-state basis for arbitrary number of two-level atoms. In addition, we show that the Mott insulator lobes in the phase diagrams will smash out with the increase of atom numbers. The results of this work provide a step for studying the effects with combinations of Dicke-like and Hubbard-like models to simulate strongly correlated electron systems using photons.
