Period-rigidity of one-relator groups

We follow in this paper a recent line of work, consisting in characterizing the periodically rigid finitely generated groups, i.e., the groups for which every subshift of finite type which is weakly aperiodic is also strongly aperiodic. In particular, we show that every finitely generated group admitting a presentation with one reduced relator and at least $3$ generators is periodically rigid if and only if it is either virtually cyclic or torsion-free virtually $\mathbb Z^2$. This proves a special case of a recent conjecture of Bitar (2024). We moreover prove that period rigidity is preserved under taking subgroups of finite indices. Using a recent theorem of MacManus (2023), we derive from our results that Bitar's conjecture holds in groups whose Cayley graphs are quasi-isometric to planar graphs.

Weakly and Strongly Aperiodic Subshifts of Finite Type on Baumslag-Solitar Groups

We study the periodicity of subshifts of finite type (SFT) on Baumslag-Solitar groups. We show that for residually finite Baumslag-Solitar groups there exist both strongly and weakly-but-not-strongly aperiodic SFTs. In particular, this shows that unlike $\mathbb{Z}^2$, but like $\mathbb{Z}^3$, strong and weak aperiodic SFTs are different classes of SFTs in residually finite BS groups. More precisely, we prove that a weakly aperiodic SFT on BS(m,n) due to Aubrun and Kari is, in fact, strongly aperiodic on BS(1,n); and weakly but not strongly aperiodic on any other BS(m,n). In addition, we exhibit an SFT which is weakly but not strongly aperiodic on BS(1,n); and we show that there exists a strongly aperiodic SFT on BS(n,n).

Parametrization by Horizontal Constraints in the Study of Algorithmic Properties of $\mathbb{Z}^2$-Subshift of Finite Type

The non-emptiness, called the Domino Problem, and the characterization of the possible entropies of $\mathbb{Z}^2$-subshifts of finite type are standard problems of symbolic dynamics. In this article we study these questions with horizontal constraints fixed beforehand as a parameter. We determine for which horizontal constraints the Domino Problem is undecidable and when all right-recursively enumerable numbers can be obtained as entropy, with two approaches: either the additional local rules added to the horizontal constraints can be of any shape, or they can only be vertical rules.

Arithmetical Complexity of the Language of Generic Limit Sets of Cellular Automata

The generic limit set of a dynamical system is the smallest set that attracts most of the space in a topological sense: it is the smallest closed set with a comeager basin of attraction. Introduced by Milnor, it has been studied in the context of one-dimensional cellular automata by Djenaoui and Guillon, Delacourt, and Törmä. In this article we present complexity bounds on realizations of generic limit sets of cellular automata with prescribed properties. We show that generic limit sets have a $Π^0_2$ language if they are inclusion-minimal, a $Σ^0_1$ language if the cellular automaton has equicontinuous points, and that these bounds are tight. We also prove that many chain mixing $Π^0_2$ subshifts and all chain mixing $Δ^0_2$ subshifts are realizable as generic limit sets. As a corollary, we characterize the minimal subshifts that occur as generic limit sets.
