Radiation outer boundary conditions and near-to-far field signal transformations for the Bardeen-Press equation

Several theoretical and astrophysical problems - including gravitational-wave modeling for extreme mass-ratio inspirals - require accurate time-domain solutions of the spin-weight $s=-2$ Teukolsky equation in Boyer-Lindquist coordinates. Because such simulations are performed on finite computational domains, they typically introduce an artificial outer boundary where nontrivial boundary conditions must be imposed. If these conditions are inaccurate, then spurious reflections and slowly-growing unphysical modes may corrupt long-time evolutions. We develop and implement exact radiation outer boundary conditions for the Bardeen-Press equation (a harmonic moment of the $a=0$ Teukolsky equation), making the artificial boundary transparent at any finite radius. We also construct near-to-far field teleportation kernels that map field data recorded at finite radius $r_1$ to the data reaching $r_2 > r_1$. The possible choice $r_2 = \infty$ corresponds to asymptotic waveform evaluation, that is propagation of the data to future null infinity. We show that both boundary and teleportation kernels are well approximated by exponential sums, with associated error bounds. Implemented in a time-domain solver, our kernel-based boundary conditions eliminate unphysical late-time growth and give the correct late-time decay rates, affording efficient long-duration simulations for waveform modeling and related blackhole perturbation calculations.

Source-Driven Tails in Kerr Spacetime: Nonlinear effects in Late-Time Behavior

We present the long-duration time-domain simulations of scalar-field tails in Kerr spacetimes driven by \emph{outgoing} multipolar sources. Extending the recent work in the literature from Schwarzschild to rotating black holes, we evolve sources with $\ell'=\{0,1,2,3,4\}$ on backgrounds with dimensionless spin $a/M=\{0.0, 0.8, 1.0\}$ and extract the late-time decay rates of measured modes $\ell\le4$ for a nonlinearity-inspired outgoing source with a $1/r^2$ fall-off. In all cases we find the inverse power-law index $p_{\ell\ell'}$ to be larger than the source-free Price law values by one unit, i.e. $p^{\text{sourced}}_{\ell\ell'} = p^{\text{Price}}_{\ell\ell'} + 1$. We also include a power-law index value computation for a similar source-driven gravitational wave case $(\ell,m)=(4,4)$ and confirm closely related results in the recent literature.

Numerical Evidence for Non-Axisymmetric Gravitational "Hair" for Extremal Kerr Black Hole Spacetimes with Hyperboloidal Foliations

Various generalizations of the scalar, axisymmetric "horizon hair" for extremal black holes have recently appeared in the literature. In this paper, we propose an expression for a non-axisymmetric gravitational "charge" and its potentially observable imprint at a finite distance from the horizon (Ori-coefficient) in extremal Kerr black hole backgrounds. Using a hyperboloidal foliation, we offer strong and robust numerical evidence for the potential existence of this horizon hair and its properties. Specifically, we consider the time evolution of horizon penetrating, quadrupolar and (subdominant) octupolar gravitational perturbations with compact support on extremal Kerr (EK) spacetime. We do this by numerically solving the Teukolsky equation and determining the conserved charge values on the horizon and at a finite distance from the black hole.
