Wilson loop calculation in QGP using non-supersymmetric AdS/CFT

Previously, two of the present authors obtained the decoupling limit and the corresponding throat geometry of non-supersymmetric D3 brane solution of type IIB string theory. In analogy with the supersymmetric case, it describes the gravity dual of a non-supersymmetric gauge theory with QCD-like properties such as running coupling and confinement (or mass gap) in certain range of its parameters. In this paper, we consider a `black' version of the non-supersymmetric D3 brane solution in the decoupling limit and use this gravity background to holographically compute the expectation value of a time-like Wilson loop which, in turn, is related to the potential of a heavy quark-antiquark pair. By boosting the gravity solution along one of the brane directions and placing the pair at an arbitrary orientation with this direction, we numerically obtain the variation of the screening length as well as the potential with velocity, its orientation with respect to the direction of motion and other parameters of the theory. Remarkably enough, our results are in qualitative agreement with those obtained holographically in supersymmetric gauge theories indicating that these features are quite robust and universal as they are insensitive to the presence of any supersymmetry in the theory. The physical interpretations of the variations with respect to the other parameters of the theory, not observed in supersymmetric theory, have also been given.

From Classical Periodic Orbits in Integrable $π$-Rational Billiards to Quantum Energy Spectrum

In the present note, we uncover a remarkable connection between the length of periodic orbit of a classical particle enclosed in a class of 2-dimensional planar billiards and the energy of a quantum particle confined to move in an identical region with infinitely high potential wall on the boundary. We observe that the quantum energy spectrum of the particle is in exact one-to-one correspondence with the spectrum of the amplitude squares of the periodic orbits of a classical particle for the class of integrable billiards considered. We have established the results by geometric constructions and exploiting the method of reflective tiling and folding of classical trajectories. We have further extended the method to 3-dimensional billiards for which exact analytical results are scarcely available - exploiting the geometric construction, we determine the exact energy spectra of two new tetrahedral domains which we believe are integrable. We test the veracity of our results by comparing them with numerical results.

Entanglement thermodynamics for an excited state of Lifshitz system

A class of (2+1)-dimensional quantum many body system characterized by an anisotropic scaling symmetry (Lifshitz symmetry) near their quantum critical point can be described by a (3+1)-dimensional dual gravity theory with negative cosmological constant along with a massive vector field, where the scaling symmetry is realized by the metric as an isometry. We calculate the entanglement entropy of an excited state of such a system holographically, i.e., from the asymptotic perturbation of the gravity dual using the prescription of Ryu and Takayanagi, when the subsystem is sufficiently small. With suitable identifications, we show that this entanglement entropy satisfies an energy conservation relation analogous to the first law of thermodynamics. The non-trivial massive vector field here plays a crucial role and contributes to an additional term in the energy relation.

Drag force in strongly coupled, anisotropic plasma at finite chemical potential

We employ methods of gauge/string duality to analyze the drag force on a heavy quark moving through a strongly coupled, anisotropic \mathcal{N}=4, SU(N) super Yang- Mills plasma in the presence of a finite U(1) chemical potential. We present numerical results valid for any value of the anisotropy parameter and the U(1) charge density and arbitrary direction of the quark velocity with respect to the direction of anisotropy. In the small anisotropy limit we are also able to furnish analytical results.

Brownian motion in strongly coupled, anisotropic Yang-Mills plasma: A holographic approach

We employ methods of gauge/string duality to analyze the Brownian motion and the concomitant Langevin equation of a heavy quark in a strongly coupled, thermal, anisotropic Yang-Mills plasma. We consider fluctuations both along and perpendicular to the direction of anisotropy and study the effects of anisotropy on the drag coefficient, the diffusion constant and the Langevin coefficient for both the directions. We also verify the fluctuation-dissipation theorem for Brownian motion in an anisotropic medium.

Holographic quark-antiquark potential in hot, anisotropic Yang-Mills plasma

Using the gauge/gravity duality we calculate the heavy quark-antiquark potential in a hot, anisotropic and strongly coupled Yang-Mills plasma in (3+1)-dimensions. As the anisotropic medium we take a deformed version of \mathcal{N} = 4 super Yang-Mills theory at finite temperature following a recent work where the dual type IIB supergravity solution is also proposed. We turn on a small value of the anisotropy parameter, for which the gravity dual is known analytically (perturbatively), and compute the velocity-dependent quark-antiquark interaction potential when the pair is moving through the plasma with a velocity v. By setting v = 0 we recover the static quark-antiquark potential. We numerically study how the potential is modified in the presence of anisotropy. We further show numerically how the quark-antiquark separation (both in the static and the velocity-dependent case) and hence, the screening length gets modified by anisotropy. We discuss various cases depending upon the direction of the dipole and the direction of its propagation and make a comparative study of these cases. We are also able to obtain an analytical expression for the screening length of the dipole moving in a hot, anisotropic plasma in a special case.

Wess-Zumino-Witten Model for Galilean Conformal Algebra

In this note, we construct a Wess-Zumino-Witten model based on the Galilean conformal algebra in 2-spacetime dimensions, which is a nonrelativistic analogue of the relativistic conformal algebra. We obtain exact background corresponding to σ-models in six dimensions (the dimension of the group manifold) and a central charge c=6. We carry out a Sugawara type construction to verify the conformal invariance of the model. Further, we discuss the feasibility of the background obtained as a physical spacetime metric.

Wilson loops in noncommutative Yang-Mills theory using gauge/gravity duality

By using the gauge/gravity duality and the Maldacena prescription we compute the expectation values of the Wilson loops in noncommutative Yang-Mills (NCYM) theory in (3+1) dimensions. We consider both the time-like and the light-like Wilson loops. The gravity dual background is given by a particular decoupling limit of (D1,D3) bound state of type IIB string theory. We obtain the velocity dependent quark-antiquark potential and numerically study how the dipole length and the potential change with velocity (for 0 < v < 1, i.e., the Wilson loop is time-like) of the dipole as well as noncommutativity. We discuss and compare the results with the known commutative results. We also obtain an analytic expression for the screening length when the rapidity is large and the noncommutativity parameter is small with the product remaining small. When v \rightarrow 1, the time-like Wilson loop becomes light-like and in that case we obtain the form of the jet quenching parameter for the strongly coupled noncommutative Yang-Mills plasma which matches with our earlier results obtained using different method.

Calculating the jet quenching parameter in the plasma of NCYM theory from gauge/gravity duality

A particular decoupling limit of non-extremal (D1, D3) brane bound state system of type IIB string theory is known to give the gravity dual of space-space non- commutative Yang-Mills (NCYM) theory at finite temperature. We use a string probe in this background to compute the jet quenching parameter in the strongly coupled plasma of hot non-commutative Yang-Mills theory in (3+1)-dimensions from gauge/gravity duality. We give the expressions for the jet quenching parameter for both small and large non-commutativity. For small non-commutativity, we find that the value of the jet quenching parameter gets reduced from its commutative value. The reduction is enhanced with temperature as T^{7} for fixed non-commutativity and the fixed 't Hooft coupling. We further generalize the results for the non-commutative Yang-Mills theories in diverse dimensions.

Wilson loops in (p+1)-dimensional Yang-Mills theories using gravity/gauge theory correspondence

We compute the expectation values of both the time-like and the light-like Wilson loops in a strongly coupled plasma of (p+1)-dimensional Yang-Mills theories using gravity/gauge theory correspondence. From the time-like Wilson loop we obtain the velocity dependent quark-antiquark potential where the dipole is moving through the plasma with an arbitrary velocity 0 1, the Wilson loop becomes light-like and we obtain the form of the jet quenching parameter in those strongly coupled plasma.
