High-frequency tuning of internal resonance and targeted energy transfer in a Van der Pol oscillator coupled to a nonlinear energy sink

Targeted energy transfer (TET) from a Van der Pol oscillator coupled to a nonlinear energy sink (NES) is investigated under the action of a high-frequency external drive, which tunes the effective natural stiffness and promotes resonance capture, facilitating energy transfer. Using \textit{direct partition of motion} with \textit{complexification averaging}, the mechanism of energy flow and instability control through \textit{hopf bifurcation} is characterized. A spectrally evaluated Q-factor, based on FFT at the effective slow frequency, captures the resonance peaks indicating the efficient energy transfer. Finally, the energy-dissipation metric is consistent with these Q-maps and identifies the regions where transient energy pumping is most effective.

Collective vibrational resonance and mode selection in nonlinear resonator arrays

This article investigates how a uniform high frequency (HF) drive applied to each site of a weakly-coupled discrete nonlinear resonator array can modulate the onsite natural stiffness and damping and thereby facilitate the active tunability of the nonlinear response and the phonon dispersion relation externally. Starting from a canonical model of parametrically excited \textit{van der Pol-Duffing} chain of oscillators with nearest neighbor coupling, a systematic two-widely separated time scale expansion (\textit{Direct Partition of Motion}) has been employed, in the backdrop of Blekhman's perturbation scheme. This procedure eliminates the fast scale and yields the effective collective dynamics of the array with renormalized stiffness and damping, modified by the high-frequency drive. The resulting dispersion shift controls which normal modes enter the parametric resonance window, allowing highly selective activation of specific bulk modes through external HF tuning. The collective resonant response to the parametric excitation and mode-selection by the HF drive has been analyzed and validated by detailed numerical simulations. The results offer a straightforward, experimentally tractable route to active control of response and channelize energy through selective mode activation in MEMS/NEMS arrays and related resonator platforms.

Controlling the effect of quantum fluctuations in a driven nonlinear parametric oscillator

This study investigates the interplay between a high-frequency external forcing and the intrinsic dynamics of a quantum nonlinear parametric oscillator. To analyze this system, classical equations of motion of the averages of quantum operators are derived and solved by employing suitable truncation schemes and the Blekhman perturbation method. It is observed that quantum fluctuations and oscillation amplitudes within the parametric resonance zone can be modulated through the fast external periodic forcing. Moreover, the influence of the strength of driving on the overall system dynamics is systematically explored. Finally, the theoretical predictions are validated through numerical simulations, establishing the reliability of the developed framework.

A Multi-Model Adaptation of Speculative Decoding for Classification

The current study introduces a novel adaptation of speculative decoding, repurposed from generation to classification tasks. We propose a multi-model framework employing up to three lightweight worker models and a single, more robust judge model analogous to draft models and target model, respectively, in speculative decoding. The worker models, tasked with the bulk of the computation, independently predict discrete class labels for a given input. When majority worker models agree on a label, it is accepted as the final label, optimizing efficiency by bypassing the computationally expensive judge model. In cases of disagreement, the judge model intervenes to resolve the label. This approach minimizes redundant computation, leverages the redundancy of multiple workers for confidence, and confines the judge model's role to challenging cases, offering a practical balance of efficiency and accuracy. Our analysis suggests that smaller out of the box instruction/chat finetuned worker models with 3 billion parameters (hereafter, 3B) demonstrate a level of alignment with judge models comparable to that of larger finetuned worker models with 7 billion parameters (hereafter, 7B) across both simple and higher order reasoning tasks. The top performing 3B worker model pair achieve an agreement rate of approximately 80-83% for sentiment and around 50-80% for similar ticket when compared to judge models. Additionally, 3B worker models provide a speedup ranging from 2.8x to 9x relative to the judge models, while 7B worker model combinations achieve a speedup ranging from 1.28x to 0.28x

Parametric Autoresonance with Time-Delayed Control

We investigate how a constant time delay influences a parametric autoresonant system. This is a nonlinear system driven by a parametrically chirped force with a negative delay-feedback that maintains adiabatic phase locking with the driving frequency. This phase locking results in a continuous amplitude growth, regardless of parameter changes. Our study reveals a critical threshold for delay strength; above this threshold, autoresonance is sustained, while below it, autoresonance diminishes. We examine the interplay between time delay and autoresonance stability, using multi-scale perturbation methods to derive analytical results, which are corroborated by numerical simulations. Ultimately, the goal is to understand and control autoresonance stability through the time-delay parameters.

Vibrational resonance in vibro-impact oscillator through fast harmonic excitation

This study focuses on extending the concept of weak signal enhancement from dynamical systems based on vibrational resonance of nonlinear systems, to non-smooth systems. A Van der Pol- Duffing oscillator with a one-sided barrier, subjected to harmonic excitations, has been considered an archetypical low-order model, whose response is weak. It is shown that the system response can be significantly enhanced by applying an additional harmonic excitation but with much higher frequencies. The reasons for the underlying physics are investigated analytically using multiple-scale analysis and the Blekham perturbation approach (direct partition motion). The analytical predictions are qualitatively validated using numerical simulations. This approach yields valuable insights into the intricate interplay between fast and slow excitations in non-smooth systems.

Energy-based theory of autoresonance in chains of coupled damped-driven generic oscillators

An energy-based theory of autoresonance in driven dissipative chains of coupled generic oscillators is discussed on the basis of a variational principle concerning the energy functional. The theory is applied to chains of delayed Duffing-Ueda oscillators and the equations that together govern the autoresonance forces and solutions are derived and solved analytically for generic values of parameters and initial conditions, including the case of quenched time-delay disorder. Remarkably, the presence of retarded potentials with time-delayed feedback drastically modify the autoresonance scenario preventing the growth of the energy oscillation over specific regions of the parameter space. Additionally, effective harmonic forces with a slowly varying frequency are derived from the exact autoresonant excitations and the effectiveness of the theory is demonstrated at suppressing the chaos induced by homogeneous periodic excitations in such oscillator chains. Numerical experiments confirmed all the theoretical predictions.

Kosambi-Cartan-Chern (KCC) Perspective on Chaos: Unveiling Hidden Attractors in Nonlinear Autonomous Systems

This article confronts the formidable task of exploring chaos within hidden attractors in nonlinear 3-D autonomous systems, highlighting the lack of established analytical and numerical methodologies for such investigations. As the basin of attraction does not touch the unstable manifold ,there are no straightforward numerical processes to detect those attractors and one has to implement special numerical-analytical strategy. In this article we present an alternative approach that allows us to predict the basin of attraction associated with hidden attractors, overcoming the existing limitations. The method discussed here based on KCC theory (Kosambi-Cartan-Chern) which enable us to conduct a comprehensive theoretical analysis by means of evaluating geometric invariants and instability exponents, thereby delineating the regions encompassing chaotic and periodic zones. Our analytical predictions are thoroughly validated by numerical results.

Understanding the Impact of Post-Training Quantization on Large Language Models

Large language models (LLMs) are rapidly increasing in size, with the number of parameters becoming a key factor in the success of many commercial models, such as ChatGPT, Claude, and Bard. Even the recently released publicly accessible models for commercial usage, such as Falcon and Llama2, come equipped with billions of parameters. This significant increase in the number of parameters makes deployment and operation very costly. The remarkable progress in the field of quantization for large neural networks in general and LLMs in particular, has made these models more accessible by enabling them to be deployed on consumer-grade GPUs. Quantized models generally demonstrate comparable performance levels to their unquantized base counterparts. Nonetheless, there exists a notable gap in our comprehensive understanding of how these quantized models respond to hyperparameters, such as temperature, max new tokens, and topk, particularly for next word prediction. The present analysis reveals that nf4 and fp4 are equally proficient 4-bit quantization techniques, characterized by similar attributes such as inference speed, memory consumption, and the quality of generated content. the study identifies nf4 as displaying greater resilience to temperature variations in the case of the llama2 series of models at lower temperature, while fp4 and fp4-dq proves to be a more suitable choice for falcon series of models. It is noteworthy that, in general, 4-bit quantized models of varying sizes exhibit higher sensitivity to temperature in the range of 0.5 to 0.8, unlike their unquantized counterparts. Additionally, int8 quantization is associated with significantly slower inference speeds, whereas unquantized bfloat16 models consistently yield the fastest inference speeds across models of all sizes.

Simulation of Heat Conduction in Complex Domains of Multi-material Composites using a Meshless Method

Several engineering applications involve complex materials with significant and discontinuous variations in thermophysical properties. These include materials for thermal storage, biological tissues with blood capillaries, etc. For such applications, numerical simulations must exercise care in not smearing the interfaces by interpolating variables across the interfaces of the subdomains. In this paper, we describe a high accuracy meshless method that uses domain decomposition and cloud-based interpolation of scattered data to solve the heat conduction equation in such situations. The polyharmonic spline (PHS) function with appended polynomial of prescribed degree is used for discretization. A flux balance condition is satisfied at the interface points and the clouds of interpolation points are restricted to be within respective domains. Compared with previously proposed meshless algorithms with domain decomposition, the cloud-based interpolations are numerically better conditioned, and achieve high accuracy through the appended polynomial. The accuracy of the algorithm is demonstrated in several two and three dimensional problems using manufactured solutions to the heat conduction equation with sharp discontinuity in thermal conductivity. Subsequently, we demonstrate the applicability of the algorithm to solve heat conduction in complex domains with practical boundary conditions and internal heat generation. Systematic computations with varying conductivity ratios, interpoint spacing and degree of appended polynomial are performed to investigate the accuracy of the algorithm.

Subharmonic entrainment and limit cycle modulation by high frequency excitation: A Renormalization group approach

In this article, we explore the possibility of a sub-harmonic $(1{:}2)$ entrainment and supercritical Hopf bifurcation in a van der Pol-Duffing oscillator that has been excited by two frequencies, comprising a slow parametric drive and a fast external forcing, through the variation of the amplitude of the external fast signal. We also deduce the condition for the threshold parametric strength required to generate sub-harmonic oscillation. The Blekhman perturbation (direct partition of motion) and the Renormalization group technique have been employed to study how the signal amplitude plays a pivotal role in modulating the limit cycle dynamics as well as the subharmonic generation. Studies of nonlinear responses and bifurcations of such driven nonlinear systems are usually done by treating the strength of the fast drive as the control parameter. Here we show that, beyond its role in allowing one to study the dynamics with the slow and fast components nicely separated, the amplitude of the high-frequency signal can also be treated as an independent control parameter for controlling both the limit cycle behavior and the onset of subharmonic oscillation in the oscillator. Our analytical estimations are well supported by numerical simulations.

Semantic-WER: A Unified Metric for the Evaluation of ASR Transcript for End Usability

Recent advances in supervised, semi-supervised and self-supervised deep learning algorithms have shown significant improvement in the performance of automatic speech recognition(ASR) systems. The state-of-the-art systems have achieved a word error rate (WER) less than 5%. However, in the past, researchers have argued the non-suitability of the WER metric for the evaluation of ASR systems for downstream tasks such as spoken language understanding (SLU) and information retrieval. The reason is that the WER works at the surface level and does not include any syntactic and semantic knowledge. The current work proposes Semantic-WER (SWER), a metric to evaluate the ASR transcripts for downstream applications in general. The SWER can be easily customized for any down-stream task.

Application of a High Order Accurate Meshless Method to Solution of Heat Conduction in Complex Geometries

In recent years, a variety of meshless methods have been developed to solve partial differential equations in complex domains. Meshless methods discretize the partial differential equations over scattered points instead of grids. Radial basis functions (RBFs) have been popularly used as high accuracy interpolants of function values at scattered locations. In this paper, we apply the polyharmonic splines (PHS) as the RBF together with appended polynomial and solve the heat conduction equation in several geometries using a collocation procedure. We demonstrate the expected exponential convergence of the numerical solution as the degree of the appended polynomial is increased. The method holds promise to solve several different governing equations in thermal sciences.

Study of Band structure, Transport and magnetic properties of BiFeO3-TbMnO3 composite

Magnetoelectric multiferroic composite of two types of multiferroic (Type I and II) consisting BiFeO3 and TbMnO3 is studied for enhanced magnetic and transport properties. A narrower band gap is estimated from the UV-visible absorption spectrum from that of BiFeO3 and TbMnO3. With known value of band gap, the band structure was estimated from the valence band x-ray photoemission spectra (XPS) and ultra violet photoemission spectra (UPS). The valence and conduction band was found at 1.0 eV and 0.45 eV above and below the Fermi level respectively. Thus the insulating behavior of the system is understood from the reconstruction of the energy bands at the interface which happens due to lattice mismatch of the two materials. The large coercivity and the increase on the magnetization value are understood to be due to superexchange interaction between different Mn ions (Mn2+, Mn3+ and Mn4+). From the composition study of EDXA and core level x-ray photoemission spectra oxygen vacancy was found which in turn creates the mixed valence state of Mn to maintain the charge neutrality.

Room temperature large spontaneous exchange bias in hard-soft antiferromagnetic composite BiFeO3-TbMnO3

We report the presence of giant spontaneous exchange bias (HSEB) in a hard and soft antiferromagnetic composite of BiFeO3-TbMnO3 (BFO-TMO in 7:3 and 8:2 ratio). The HSEB varies between 5-778Oe, but persists up to room temperature with a maximum near a spin reorientation transition temperature observed from magnetization vs. temperature measurement in Zero-field cooled (ZFC) and Field cooled (FC) modes. Isothermal remnant magnetization measurements at room temperature indicate the presence of an interfacial layer of a 2 dimensional dilute antiferromagnet in a field (2D DAFF). A stable value of the exchange bias has been observed via training effect measurements which signify the role of interfacial exchange coupling in the system. Based on the experimental results we explain the presence of the giant spontaneous exchange bias on the basis of a strong strain-mediated magnetoelectriccoupling induced exchange interaction and the creation of 2D DAFF layer at the interface. Theproperties of this layer are defined by canting and pinning of BFO spins at the interface with TMO due to Fe and Mn interaction. X-ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism (XMCD) confirms the presence of canted antiferromagnetic ordering of BiFeO3, charge transfer between Mn ions and different magnetically coupled layers which play vital role in getting the exchange bias.

A Generative Model of a Pronunciation Lexicon for Hindi

Voice browser applications in Text-to- Speech (TTS) and Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) systems crucially depend on a pronunciation lexicon. The present paper describes the model of pronunciation lexicon of Hindi developed to automatically generate the output forms of Hindi at two levels, the and the (PS, in short for Prosodic Structure). The latter level involves both syllable-division and stress placement. The paper describes the tool developed for generating the two-level outputs of lexica in Hindi.

A Finite State and Rule-based Akshara to Prosodeme (A2P) Converter in Hindi

This article describes a software module called Akshara to Prosodeme (A2P) converter in Hindi. It converts an input grapheme into prosedeme (sequence of phonemes with the specification of syllable boundaries and prosodic labels). The software is based on two proposed finite state machines\textemdash one for the syllabification and another for the syllable labeling. In addition to that, it also uses a set of nonlinear phonological rules proposed for foot formation in Hindi, which encompass solutions to schwa-deletion in simple, compound, derived and inflected words. The nonlinear phonological rules are based on metrical phonology with the provision of recursive foot structure. A software module is implemented in Python. The testing of the software for syllabification, syllable labeling, schwa deletion and prosodic labeling yield an accuracy of more than 99% on a lexicon of size 28664 words.
