Mapping county-level mobility pattern changes in the United States in response to COVID-19

To contain the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, one of the non-pharmacological epidemic control measures in response to the COVID-19 outbreak is reducing the transmission rate of SARS-COV-2 in the population through (physical) social distancing. An interactive web-based mapping platform that provides timely quantitative information on how people in different counties and states reacted to the social distancing guidelines was developed with the support of the National Science Foundation (NSF). It integrates geographic information systems (GIS) and daily updated human mobility statistical patterns derived from large-scale anonymized and aggregated smartphone location big data at the county-level in the United States, and aims to increase risk awareness of the public, support governmental decision-making, and help enhance community responses to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Mobile phone location data reveal the effect and geographic variation of social distancing on the spread of the COVID-19 epidemic

The emergence of SARS-CoV-2 and the coronavirus infectious disease (COVID-19) has become a pandemic. Social (physical) distancing is a key non-pharmacologic control measure to reduce the transmission rate of SARS-COV-2, but high-level adherence is needed. Using daily travel distance and stay-at-home time derived from large-scale anonymous mobile phone location data provided by Descartes Labs and SafeGraph, we quantify the degree to which social distancing mandates have been followed in the U.S. and its effect on growth of COVID-19 cases. The correlation between the COVID-19 growth rate and travel distance decay rate and dwell time at home change rate was -0.586 (95% CI: -0.742 ~ -0.370) and 0.526 (95% CI: 0.293 ~ 0.700), respectively. Increases in state-specific doubling time of total cases ranged from 1.04 ~ 6.86 days to 3.66 ~ 30.29 days after social distancing orders were put in place, consistent with mechanistic epidemic prediction models. Social distancing mandates reduce the spread of COVID-19 when they are followed.

Calibrating the dynamic Huff model for business analysis using location big data

The Huff model has been widely used in location-based business analysis for delineating a trading area containing potential customers to a store. Calibrating the Huff model and its extensions requires empirical location visit data. Many studies rely on labor-intensive surveys. With the increasing availability of mobile devices, users in location-based platforms share rich multimedia information about their locations in a fine spatiotemporal resolution, which offers opportunities for business intelligence. In this research, we present a time-aware dynamic Huff model (T-Huff) for location-based market share analysis and calibrate this model using large-scale store visit patterns based on mobile phone location data across ten most populated U.S. cities. By comparing the hourly visit patterns of two types of stores, we demonstrate that the calibrated T-Huff model is more accurate than the original Huff model in predicting the market share of different types of business (e.g., supermarkets vs. department stores) over time. We also identify the regional variability where people in large metropolitan areas with a well-developed transit system show less sensitivity to long-distance visits. In addition, several socioeconomic and demographic factors (e.g., median household income) that potentially affect people's visit decisions are examined and summarized.

Estimation of Regional Economic Development Indicator from Transportation Network Analytics

With the booming economy in China, many researches have pointed out that the improvement of regional transportation infrastructure among other factors had an important effect on economic growth. Utilizing a large-scale dataset which includes 3.5 billion entry and exit records of vehicles along highways generated from toll collection systems, we attempt to establish the relevance of mid-distance land transport patterns to regional economic status through transportation network analyses. We apply standard measurements of complex networks to analyze the highway transportation networks. A set of traffic flow features are computed and correlated to the regional economic development indicator. The multi-linear regression models explain about 89% to 96% of the variation of cities' GDP across three provinces in China. We then fit gravity models using annual traffic volumes of cars, buses, and freight trucks between pairs of cities for each province separately as well as for the whole dataset. We find the temporal changes of distance-decay effects on spatial interactions between cities in transportation networks, which link to the economic development patterns of each province. We conclude that transportation big data reveal the status of regional economic development and contain valuable information of human mobility, production linkages, and logistics for regional management and planning. Our research offers insights into the investigation of regional economic development status using highway transportation big data.

Shape Deformation and Drag Variation of a Coupled Rigid-flexible System in a Flowing Soap Film

We experimentally study the flow past a rigid plate with an attached closed filament acting as a deformable afterbody in the soap film. The complex fluid-structure interactions due to its deformable shape and corresponding dynamics are studied. We find the shape of the afterbody is determined by the filament length and flow velocity. A significant drag reduction of up to 9.0% is achieved by adjusting the filament length. We analyze the drag mechanism by characterizing the deformable afterbody shape and wake properties. Our experiment and modeling suggest that such favorable flow control and drag reduction are expected to occur over a specific flow speed regime when the flexible afterbody is suitably added.

Transferring Multiscale Map Styles Using Generative Adversarial Networks

The advancement of the Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies makes it possible to learn stylistic design criteria from existing maps or other visual art and transfer these styles to make new digital maps. In this paper, we propose a novel framework using AI for map style transfer applicable across multiple map scales. Specifically, we identify and transfer the stylistic elements from a target group of visual examples, including Google Maps, OpenStreetMap, and artistic paintings, to unstylized GIS vector data through two generative adversarial network (GAN) models. We then train a binary classifier based on a deep convolutional neural network to evaluate whether the transfer styled map images preserve the original map design characteristics. Our experiment results show that GANs have a great potential for multiscale map style transferring, but many challenges remain requiring future research.

Extracting human emotions at different places based on facial expressions and spatial clustering analysis

The emergence of big data enables us to evaluate the various human emotions at places from a statistic perspective by applying affective computing. In this study, a novel framework for extracting human emotions from large-scale georeferenced photos at different places is proposed. After the construction of places based on spatial clustering of user generated footprints collected in social media websites, online cognitive services are utilized to extract human emotions from facial expressions using the state-of-the-art computer vision techniques. And two happiness metrics are defined for measuring the human emotions at different places. To validate the feasibility of the framework, we take 80 tourist attractions around the world as an example and a happiness ranking list of places is generated based on human emotions calculated over 2 million faces detected out from over 6 million photos. Different kinds of geographical contexts are taken into consideration to find out the relationship between human emotions and environmental factors. Results show that much of the emotional variation at different places can be explained by a few factors such as openness. The research may offer insights on integrating human emotions to enrich the understanding of sense of place in geography and in place-based GIS.

A context-based geoprocessing framework for optimizing meetup location of multiple moving objects along road networks

Given different types of constraints on human life, people must make decisions that satisfy social activity needs. Minimizing costs (i.e., distance, time, or money) associated with travel plays an important role in perceived and realized social quality of life. Identifying optimal interaction locations on road networks when there are multiple moving objects (MMO) with space-time constraints remains a challenge. In this research, we formalize the problem of finding dynamic ideal interaction locations for MMO as a spatial optimization model and introduce a context-based geoprocessing heuristic framework to address this problem. As a proof of concept, a case study involving identification of a meetup location for multiple people under traffic conditions is used to validate the proposed geoprocessing framework. Five heuristic methods with regard to efficient shortest-path search space have been tested. We find that the R* tree-based algorithm performs the best with high quality solutions and low computation time. This framework is implemented in a GIS environment to facilitate integration with external geographic contextual information, e.g., temporary road barriers, points of interest (POI), and real-time traffic information, when dynamically searching for ideal meetup sites. The proposed method can be applied in trip planning, carpooling services, collaborative interaction, and logistics management.

A Co(II)-based Molecular Magnet with a 6 T Coercive Field

Hard magnets with high coercivity, such as Nd2Fe14B and SmCo5 alloys, can maintain magnetisation under a high reverse external magnetic field and have therefore become irreplaceable parts in many practical applications. Molecular magnets are promising alternatives, owing to their precise and designable chemical structures, tuneable functionalities and controllable synthetic methods. Here, we demonstrate that an unusually large coercive field can be achieved in a single-chain magnet. Systematic characterisations, including magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity and neutron diffraction measurements, show that the observed giant coercive field originates from the spin dynamics along the one-dimensional chain of the compound because of the strong exchange coupling between Co(II) centres and radicals.

Constructing Gazetteers from Volunteered Big Geo-Data Based on Hadoop

Traditional gazetteers are built and maintained by authoritative mapping agencies. In the age of Big Data, it is possible to construct gazetteers in a data-driven approach by mining rich volunteered geographic information (VGI) from the Web. In this research, we build a scalable distributed platform and a high-performance geoprocessing workflow based on the Hadoop ecosystem to harvest crowd-sourced gazetteer entries. Using experiments based on geotagged datasets in Flickr, we find that the MapReduce-based workflow running on the spatially enabled Hadoop cluster can reduce the processing time compared with traditional desktop-based operations by an order of magnitude. We demonstrate how to use such a novel spatial-computing infrastructure to facilitate gazetteer research. In addition, we introduce a provenance-based trust model for quality assurance. This work offers new insights on enriching future gazetteers with the use of Hadoop clusters, and makes contributions in connecting GIS to the cloud computing environment for the next frontier of Big Geo-Data analytics.

Three-Way Dissection of a Game-CAPTCHA: Automated Attacks, Relay Attacks, and Usability

Existing captcha solutions on the Internet are a major source of user frustration. Game captchas are an interesting and, to date, little-studied approach claiming to make captcha solving a fun activity for the users. One broad form of such captchas -- called Dynamic Cognitive Game (DCG) captchas -- challenge the user to perform a game-like cognitive task interacting with a series of dynamic images. We pursue a comprehensive analysis of a representative category of DCG captchas. We formalize, design and implement such captchas, and dissect them across: (1) fully automated attacks, (2) human-solver relay attacks, and (3) usability. Our results suggest that the studied DCG captchas exhibit high usability and, unlike other known captchas, offer some resistance to relay attacks, but they are also vulnerable to our novel dictionary-based automated attack.

Honeycomb Heisenberg Spin Ladder: Unusual Ground State and Thermodynamic Properties

The unusual ground state and thermodynamic properties of spin-1/2 two-leg honeycomb (HC) spin ladder are systematically studied by jointly utilizing various analytical and numerical methods. The HC spin ladder is found to exhibit behaviors dramatically different from those of the conventional square spin ladder. A strong relevant term nJ and a half saturation magnetization plateau that can be attributed to the formation of diluted dimer states are observed in the HC ladder, both of which are absent in the square ladder. The ground state phase diagram of the HC spin ladder is identified, and the thermodynamic properties of the specific heat and susceptibility for different couplings are thoroughly explored, where two kinds of excitations are unveiled. The distinct Wilson ratios for both spin ladders at the lower critical fields are also obtained. Our calculated result is well fitted to the experimental data of the two-leg HC spin ladder compound [Cu2L1(N3)4]n.

Phase transitions and thermodynamics of the two-dimensional Ising model on a distorted Kagomé lattice

The two-dimensional Ising model on a distorted Kagomé lattice is studied by means of exact solutions and the tensor renormalisation group (TRG) method. The zero-field phase diagrams are obtained, where three phases such as ferromagnetic, ferrimagnetic and paramagnetic phases, along with the second-order phase transitions, have been identified. The TRG results are quite accurate and reliable in comparison to the exact solutions. In a magnetic field, the magnetization ($m$), susceptibility and specific heat are studied by the TRG algorithm, where the $m=1/3$ plateaux are observed in the magnetization curves for some couplings. The experimental data of susceptibility for the complex Co(N$_3$)$_2$(bpg)$\cdot$ DMF$_{4/3}$ are fitted with the TRG results, giving the couplings of the complex $J=22K$ and $J'=33K$.

Thermodynamics of spin-1/2 tetrameric Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain

The thermodynamic properties of a spin S=1/2 tetrameric Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain with alternating interactions AF1-AF2-AF1-F (AF and F denote the antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic couplings, respectively) are studied by means of the transfer-matrix renormalization group method and Jordan-Wigner transformation. It is found that in the absence of magnetic field, the thermodynamic behaviors are closely related to the gapped low-lying excitations, and a novel structure with three peaks in the temperature dependence of specific heat is unveiled. In a magnetic field, a phase diagram in the temperature-field plane for the couplings satisfying JAF1=JAF2=JF is obtained, in which various phases are identified. The temperature dependence of thermodynamic quantities including the magnetization, susceptibility and specific heat are studied to characterize the corresponding phases. It is disclosed that the magnetization has a crossover behavior at low temperature in the Luttinger liquid phase, which is shown falling into the same class as that in the S=1 Haldane chain. In the plateau regime, the thermodynamic behaviors alter at a certain field, which results from the crossing of two excitation spectra. By means of the fermion mapping, it is uncovered that the system has four spectra from fermion and hole excitations that are responsible for the observed thermodynamic behaviors.

Thermodynamics of Spin-1/2 AF-AF-F and F-F-AF Trimerized Quantum Heisenberg Chains

The magnetization process, the susceptibility and the specific heat of the spin-1/2 AF-AF-F and F-F-AF trimerized quantum Heisenberg chains have been investigated by means of the transfer matrix renormalization group (TMRG) technique as well as the modified spin-wave (MSW) theory. A magnetization plateau at $m=1/6$ for both trimerized chains is observed at low temperature. The susceptibility and the specific heat show various behaviors for different ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions and in different magnetic fields. The TMRG results of susceptibility and the specific heat can be nicely fitted by a linear superposition of double two-level systems, where two fitting equations are proposed. Three branch excitations, one gapless excitation and two gapful excitations, for both systems are found within the MSW theory. It is observed that the MSW theory captures the main characteristics of the thermodynamic behaviors at low temperatures. The TMRG results are also compared with the possible experimental data.

Magnetic Properties of J-J-J' Quantum Heisenberg Chains with Spin S=1/2, 1, 3/2 and 2 in a Magnetic Field

By means of the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method, the magnetic properties of the J-J-J$^{\prime}$ quantum Heisenberg chains with spin $S=1/2$, 1, 3/2 and 2 in the ground states are investigated in the presence of a magnetic field. Two different cases are considered: (a) when $J$ is antiferromagnetic and $J^{\prime}$ is ferromagnetic (i.e. the AF-AF-F chain), the system is a ferrimagnet. The plateaus of the magnetization are observed. It is found that the width of the plateaus decreases with increasing the ferromagnetic coupling, and disappears when $% J^{\prime}/J$ passes over a critical value. The saturated field is observed to be independent of the ferromagnetic coupling; (b) when $J$ is ferromagnetic and $J^{\prime}$ is antiferromagnetic (i.e. the F-F-AF chain), the system becomes an antiferromagnet. The plateaus of the magnetization are also seen. The width of the plateaus decreases with decreasing the antiferromagnetic coupling, and disappears when $J^{\prime}/J $ passes over a critical value. Though the ground state properties are quite different, the magnetization plateaus in both cases tend to disappear when the ferromagnetic coupling becomes more dominant. Besides, no fundamental difference between the systems with spin half-integer and integer has been found.

Field-Induced Transition in the S=1 Antiferromagnetic Chain with Single-Ion Anisotropy in a Transverse Magnetic Field

The field-induced transition in one-dimensional S=1 Heisenberg antiferromagnet with single-ion anisotropy in the presence of a transverse magnetic field is obtained on the basis of the Schwinger boson mean-field theory. The behaviors of the specific heat and susceptibility as functions of temperature as well as the applied transverse field are explored, which are found to be different from the results obtained under a longitudinal field. The anomalies of the specific heat at low temperatures, which might be an indicative of a field-induced transition from a Luttinger liquid phase to an ordered phase, are explicitly uncovered under the transverse field. A schematic phase diagram is proposed. The theoretical results are compared with experimental observations.
