Deep learning for smart fish farming: applications, opportunities and challenges

With the rapid emergence of deep learning (DL) technology, it has been successfully used in various fields including aquaculture. This change can create new opportunities and a series of challenges for information and data processing in smart fish farming. This paper focuses on the applications of DL in aquaculture, including live fish identification, species classification, behavioral analysis, feeding decision-making, size or biomass estimation, water quality prediction. In addition, the technical details of DL methods applied to smart fish farming are also analyzed, including data, algorithms, computing power, and performance. The results of this review show that the most significant contribution of DL is the ability to automatically extract features. However, challenges still exist; DL is still in an era of weak artificial intelligence. A large number of labeled data are needed for training, which has become a bottleneck restricting further DL applications in aquaculture. Nevertheless, DL still offers breakthroughs in the handling of complex data in aquaculture. In brief, our purpose is to provide researchers and practitioners with a better understanding of the current state of the art of DL in aquaculture, which can provide strong support for the implementation of smart fish farming.

Hybrid calibration procedure for fringe projection profilometry based on stereo-vision and polynomial fitting

The key to accurate 3D shape measurement in Fringe Projection Profilometry (FPP) is the proper calibration of the measurement system. Current calibration techniques rely on phase-coordinate mapping (PCM) or back-projection stereo-vision (SV) methods. PCM methods are cumbersome to implement as they require precise positioning of the calibration target relative to the FPP system but produce highly accurate measurements within the calibration volume. SV methods generally do not achieve the same accuracy level. However, the calibration is more flexible in that the calibration target can be arbitrarily positioned. In this work, we propose a hybrid calibration method that leverages the SV calibration approach using a PCM method to achieve higher accuracy. The method has the flexibility of SV methods, is robust to lens distortions, and has a simple relation between the recovered phase and the metric coordinates. Experimental results show that the proposed Hybrid method outperforms the SV method in terms of accuracy and reconstruction time due to its low computational complexity.

Nuclear system size scan for freeze-out properties in relativistic heavy-ion collisions by using a multiphase transport model

A system size scan program was recently proposed for the STAR experiments at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider(RHIC). In this study, we employ a multiphase transport (AMPT) model for considering the bulk properties at the freeze-out stage for $\mathrm{^{10}B+^{10}B}$, $\mathrm{^{12}C+^{12}C}$, $\mathrm{^{16}O+^{16}O}$, $\mathrm{^{20}Ne+^{20}Ne}$, $\mathrm{^{40}Ca+^{40}Ca}$, $\mathrm{^{96}Zr+^{96}Zr}$, and $\mathrm{^{197}Au+^{197}Au}$ collisions at RHIC energies $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ of 200, 20, and 7.7 GeV. The results for $\mathrm{^{197}Au+^{197}Au}$ collisions are comparable with those of previous experimental STAR data. The transverse momentum $p_{T}$ spectra of charged particles ($π^{\pm}$, $K^{\pm}$, $p$, and $\bar{p}$) at the kinetic freeze-out stage, based on a blast-wave model, are also discussed. In addition, we use a statistical thermal model to extract the parameters at the chemical freeze-out stage, which agree with those from other thermal model calculations. It was found that there is a competitive relationship between the kinetic freeze-out parameter $T_{kin}$ and the radial expansion velocity $β_{T}$, which also agrees with the STAR or ALICE results. We found that the chemical freeze-out strangeness potential $μ_{s}$ remains constant in all collision systems and that the fireball radius $R$ is dominated by $\left\langle \mathrm{N_{Part}}\right\rangle$, which can be well fitted by a function of $a \left\langle \mathrm{N_{Part}}\right\rangle^{b}$ with $b \approx 1/3$. In addition, we calculated the nuclear modification factors for different collision systems with respect to the $ \mathrm{{}^{10}B} + \mathrm{{}^{10}B}$ system, and found that they present a gradual suppression within a higher $p_{T}$ range from small to large systems.

Clustering structure effect on Hanbury-Brown-Twiss correlation in $^{12}$C + $^{197}$Au collisions at 200 GeV}

Through $^{12}$C + $^{197}$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} =$ 200 GeV using a multiphase transport (AMPT) model, the azimuthal angle dependences of the Hanbury Brown-Twiss (HBT) radii relative to the second- and third-order participant plane from $π$-$π$ correlations are discussed. Three initial geometric configurations of $^{12}$C, namely three-$α$-cluster triangle, three-$α$-cluster chain and Woods-Saxon distribution of nucleons, are taken into account, and their effects on the correlations are investigated. The ratio of the third- to the second-order HBT radii $R_{o(s),3}^2/R_{o(s),2}^2$ is shown to be a clear probe for three configurations. In addition, this work presents the hadronic rescattering time evolution of the azimuthally dependent HBT radii. From the present study, one can learn that the HBT correlation from identical particles at freeze-out is able to provide the information of different initial configurations as collective flow proposed before.

Charge asymmetry dependence of flow and a novel correlator to detect the chiral magnetic wave in a multiphase transport model

In a multiphase transport model with the initial electric quadrupole moment, we studied and discussed the charge asymmetry ($A_{\rm ch}$) dependence of flow at varied kinematic windows in semi-central Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 200 GeV. We then proposed a novel correlator $W$ which specially focuses on the difference of elliptic flow between positively and negatively charged hadrons induced by the chiral magnetic wave and, more importantly, is irrelevant to the ambiguous $A_{\rm ch}$. We found that the distribution of the second order correlator $W_2$ displays a convex structure in the absence of the quadrupole and a concave shape in the presence of the quadrupole. We also studied the response of $W_n$ for both signal and resonance background in a toy model and in analytical calculation. Such a method provides a new way to detect the chiral magnetic wave.

Electromagnetic field from asymmetric to symmetric heavy ion collision at 200 GeV/c

Electromagnetic fields produced in relativistic heavy-ion collisions are affected by the asymmetry of the projectile-target combination as well as the different initial configurations of the nucleus. In this study, the results of the electric and magnetic fields produced for different combinations of ions, namely $^{12}$C + $^{197}$Au, $^{24}$Mg + $^{197}$Au, $^{64}$Cu + $^{197}$Au, and $^{197}$Au + $^{197}$Au at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200$ GeV are demonstrated with a multi-phase transport model (AMPT). The configuration of the distribution of nucleons of $^{12}$C is initialized by a Woods-Saxon spherical structure, a three-$α$-clustering triangular structure or a three-$α$-clustering chain structure. It was observed that the electric and magnetic fields display different behavioral patterns for asymmetric combinations of the projectile and target nuclei as well as for different initial configurations of the carbon nucleus. The major features of the process are discussed.

Two-particle angular correlations in heavy ion collisions from a multiphase transport model

We extend our earlier study on two-particle angular correlations in $pp$ collisions at low transverse momentum ($p_T$) to $p$-Pb, Pb-Pb and Au-Au collisions at RHIC and LHC energies. We mainly use the string melting version of a multiphase transport model with improved quark coalescence for this study. We start from the analysis of $π^{\pm}$, $K^{\pm}$ and $p$($\bar{p}$) $p_T$ and rapidity distributions at different centralities. We then focus on two-particle angular correlations in $p$-Pb collisions at $\mathrm{\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 5.02}$ TeV and Pb-Pb collisions at $\mathrm{\sqrt{s_{NN}}= 2.76}$ TeV. For $p$-Pb collisions, a near side depression in the angular correlation is observed for low $p_T$ proton pairs and $Λ$ pairs but not for pion pairs or kaon pairs, similar to our earlier finding for $pp$ collisions at $\mathrm{\sqrt{s}= 7}$ TeV. This is also the case for very low multiplicity Pb-Pb and Au-Au collisions. We also find that parton interactions and the improved quark coalescence are mainly responsible for the depression feature in baryon pair angular correlations. However, no such baryon-baryon anti-correlations are observed in Pb-Pb and Au-Au collisions at higher multiplicities. Therefore our results suggest that low $p_T$ baryon-baryon angular anti-correlations have a strong multiplicity dependence.

Two-particle angular correlations in pp and p-Pb collisions at LHC energies from a multi-phase transport model

We apply a multi-phase transport (AMPT) model to study two-particle angular correlations in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}= 7$ TeV. Besides being able to describe the angular correlation functions of meson-meson pairs, a large improvement for the angular correlations of baryon-baryon and antibaryon-antibaryon is achieved. We further find that the AMPT model with new quark coalescence provides an even better description on the anti-correlation feature of baryon-baryon correlations observed in the experiments. We also extend the study to p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s}= 5.02$ TeV and obtained similar results. These results help us better understand the particle production mechanism in $pp$ and p-Pb collisions at LHC energies.

Area of the complement of the fast escaping sets of a family of entire functions

Let $f$ be an entire function with the form $f(z)=P(e^z)/e^z$, where $P$ is a polynomial with degree at least $2$ and $P(0)\neq 0$. We prove that the area of the complement of the fast escaping set (hence the Fatou set) of $f$ in a horizontal strip of width $2π$ is finite. In particular, the corresponding result can be applied to the sine family $α\sin(z+β)$, where $α\neq 0$ and $β\in\mathbb{C}$.

System G Distributed Graph Database

Motivated by the need to extract knowledge and value from interconnected data, graph analytics on big data is a very active area of research in both industry and academia. To support graph analytics efficiently a large number of in memory graph libraries, graph processing systems and graph databases have emerged. Projects in each of these categories focus on particular aspects such as static versus dynamic graphs, off line versus on line processing, small versus large graphs, etc. While there has been much advance in graph processing in the past decades, there is still a need for a fast graph processing, using a cluster of machines with distributed storage. In this paper, we discuss a novel distributed graph database called System G designed for efficient graph data storage and processing on modern computing architectures. In particular we describe a single node graph database and a runtime and communication layer that allows us to compose a distributed graph database from multiple single node instances. From various industry requirements, we find that fast insertions and large volume concurrent queries are critical parts of the graph databases and we optimize our database for such features. We experimentally show the efficiency of System G for storing data and processing graph queries on state-of-the-art platforms.

Production of Kaon and $Λ$ in nucleus-nucleus collisions at ultra-relativistic energy from a blast wave model

The particle production of Kaon and $Λ$ are studied in nucleus-nucleus collisions at relativistic energy based on a chemical equilibrium blast-wave model. The transverse momentum spectra of Kaon and $Λ$ at the kinetic freeze-out stage from our model are in good agreement with the experimental results. The kinetic freeze-out parameters of temperature ($T_{kin}$) and radial flow parameter $ρ_{0}$ are presented for the FOPI, RHIC and LHC energies. And the resonance decay effect is also discussed. The systematic study for beam energy dependence of the strangeness particle production will help us to better understand the properties of the matter created in heavy-ion collisions at the kinetic freeze-out stage.

Multi-resonance of energy transport and absence of heat pump in a force-driven lattice

Energy transport control in low dimensional nano-scale systems has attracted much attention in recent years. In this paper, we investigate the energy transport properties of Frenkel-Kontorova lattice subject to a periodic driving force, in particular, the resonance behavior of the energy current by varying the external driving frequency. It is discovered that in certain parameter ranges, multiple resonance peaks, instead of a single resonance, emerge. By comparing the nonlinear lattice model with a harmonic chain, we unravel the underlying physical mechanism for such resonance phenomenon. Other parameter dependencies of the resonance behavior are examined as well. Finally, we demonstrate that heat pumping is actually absent in this force-driven model.
