Uncertainties in Successive Measurements

When you measure an observable, A, in Quantum Mechanics, the state of the system changes. This, in turn, affects the quantum-mechanical uncertainty in some non-commuting observable, B. The standard Uncertainty Relation puts a lower bound on the uncertainty of B in the initial state. What is relevant for a subsequent measurement of B, however, is the uncertainty of B in the post-measurement state. We re-examine this problem, both in the case where A has a pure point spectrum and in the case where A has a continuous spectrum. In the latter case, the need to include a finite detector resolution, as part of what it means to measure such an observable, has dramatic implications for the result of successive measurements. Ozawa proposed an inequality satisfied in the case of successive measurements. Among our results, we show that his inequality is ineffective (can never come close to being saturated). For the cases of interest, we compute a sharper lower bound.

Non-Gaussianity from Excited Initial Inflationary States

We study squeezed limit $f_{NL}$ generation by excited initial inflationary states in a model independent way. We restrict "excited" to mean a Bogoliubov transformation of the Bunch Davies state. We simultaneously impose the constraints that the observable power spectrum is nearly scale invariant over at least three decades and that the observable modes today be subhorizon at the beginning of inflation while not causing significant backreaction. We show that most excited initial inflationary states for single field inflationary models with negligible superhorizon evolution do not produce an observable squeezed limit $f_{NL}$. The case in which one mode is in the Bunch Davies state while the other two modes are in an excited state with $0.01<|β_k|\leq0.1$ may generate a squeezed limit $f_{NL}$ which is detectable with future experiments.

The Inflationary Wavefunction and its Initial Conditions

We explore the effect of initial conditions on the inflationary wavefunction and their consequences for the observed spectrum of primordial fluctuations. In a class of models with a sudden transition into inflation we find that, for a reasonable set of assumptions about the reheat temperature and the number of e-foldings, it is possible for initial conditions set by a pre-inflationary epoch to have an observable effect.

Non-Gaussianities in the Cosmological Perturbation Spectrum due to Primordial Anisotropy II

We continue to investigate possible signatures of a pre-inflationary anisotropic phase in two-point and three point correlation functions of the curvature perturbation for high-momentum modes which exit the horizon well after isotropization. The late time dynamics of these modes is characterized by a non-Bunch Davies vacuum state which encodes all the information about initial anisotropy in the background space-time. We observe that, unlike the non-planar momenta, there exist regimes of planar momenta for which scale invariance of the power spectrum is strongly broken. This regime of planar momenta gives rise to enhanced non-Gaussianity in certain squeezed triangle configurations, although the enhancement of the $f_{NL}$ parameter is limited by the breakdown of linear perturbation theory at "exact planarity". Finally, we demonstrate that for the range of planar modes for which scale invariance of the power spectrum is preserved, non-Gaussianity in the curvature perturbation spectrum is naturally constrained to be extremely small.

Rapid field excursions and the inflationary tensor spectrum

We consider the effects of fields with suddenly changing mass on the inflationary power spectra. In this context, when a field becomes light, it will be excited. This process contributes to the tensor power spectrum. We compute these effects in a gauge-invariant manner, where we use a novel analytical method for evaluating the corrections to the tensor spectrum due to these excitations. In the case of a scalar field, we show that the net impact on the tensors is small as long as the perturbative expansion is valid. Thus, in these scenarios, measurement of tensor modes is still in one-to-one correspondence with the Hubble scale.

Non-Gaussianities in the Cosmological Perturbation Spectrum due to Primordial Anisotropy

We investigate possible signatures of a pre-inflationary anisotropic phase in two-point and three-point correlation functions of the curvature perturbation for high-momentum modes which exit the horizon after isotropization. In this momentum regime, the early time dynamics admits a WKB description and the late time dynamics can be described in terms of a non-Bunch Davies vacuum state which encodes the information of initial anisotropy in the background spacetime. We compute the bi-spectrum for curvature perturbation in a canonical single-field action with and without higher derivative operators. We show that the bi-spectrum at late times, in either case, is enhanced for a flattened triangle configuration as well as a squeezed triangle configuration and compute the corresponding $f_{NL}$ parameters. The angular dependence and the particular momentum dependence of the $f_{NL}$ parameter appear as distinctive features of background anisotropy at early times.

On Slow-roll Moduli Inflation in Massive IIA Supergravity with Metric Fluxes

We derive several no-go theorems in the context of massive type IIA string theory compactified to four dimensions in a way that, in the absence of fluxes, preserves N=1 supersymmetry. Our derivation is based on the dilaton, Kaehler and complex structure moduli dependence of the potential of the four-dimensional effective field theory, that is generated by the presence of D6-branes, O6-planes, RR-fluxes, NSNS 3-form flux, and geometric fluxes. To demonstrate the usefulness of our theorems, we apply them to the most commonly studied class of toroidal orientifolds. We show that for all but two of the models in this class the slow-roll parameter εis bounded from below by numbers of order unity as long as the fluxes satisfy the Bianchi identities, ruling out slow-roll inflation and even the existence of de Sitter extrema in these models. For the two cases that avoid the no-go theorems, we provide some details of our numerical studies, demonstrating that small εcan indeed be achieved. We stress that there seems to be an η-problem, however, suggesting that none of the models in this class are viable from a cosmological point of view at least at large volume, small string coupling, and leading order in the α'-expansion.

Vacuum Bubble in an Inhomogeneous Cosmology

We study the propagation of bubbles of new vacuum in a radially inhomogeneous Lemaitre-Tolman-Bondi background that includes a cosmological constant. This exemplifies the classical evolution of a tunneling bubble through a metastable state with curvature inhomogeneities, and will be relevant in the context of the Landscape. We demand that the matter profile in the LTB background satisfy the weak energy condition. For sample profiles that satisfy this restriction, we find that the evolution of the bubble (in terms of the physically relevant coordinates intrinsic to the shell) is largely unaffected by the prsence of local inhomogeneities. Our setup should also be a useful toy model for capturing the effects of ambient inhomogeneities on an inflating region.

Non-commutativity and Supersymmetry

We study the extent to which the gauge symmetry of abelian Yang-Mills can be deformed under two conditions: first, that the deformation depend on a two-form scale. Second, that the deformation preserve supersymmetry. We show that (up to a single parameter) the only allowed deformation is the one determined by the star product. We then consider the supersymmetry algebra satisfied by NCYM expressed in commutative variables. The algebra is peculiar since the supercharges are not gauge-invariant. However, the action, expressed in commutative variables, appears to be quadratic in fermions to all orders in theta.

Summing Up Instantons in Three-Dimensional Yang-Mills Theories

We show that the four derivative terms in the effective action of three-dimensional N=8 Yang-Mills theory are determined by supersymmetry. These terms receive both perturbative and non-perturbative corrections. Using our technique for constraining the effective action, we are able to determine the exact form of the eight fermion terms in the supersymmetric completion of the $F^4$ term, including all instanton corrections. As a consequence, we argue that the integral of the Euler density over $k$ monopole moduli space in SU(2) Yang-Mills is determined by our non-renormalization theorem for all values of $k$.

Supersymmetry and Higher Derivative Terms in the Effective Action of Yang-Mills Theories

Higher derivative terms in the effective action of certain Yang-Mills theories can be severely constrained by supersymmetry. We show that requiring sixteen supersymmetries in quantum mechanical gauge theory determines the $v^6$ term in the effective action. Even the numerical coefficient of the $v^6$ term is fixed in terms of lower derivative terms in the effective action.

Constraints From Extended Supersymmetry in Quantum Mechanics

We consider quantum mechanical gauge theories with sixteen supersymmetries. The Hamiltonians or Lagrangians characterizing these theories can contain higher derivative terms. In the operator approach, we show that the free theory is essentially the unique abelian theory with up to four derivatives in the following sense: any small deformation of the free theory, which preserves the supersymmetries, can be gauged away by a unitary conjugation. We also present a method for deriving constraints on terms appearing in an effective Lagrangian. We apply this method to the effective Lagrangian describing the dynamics of two well-separated clusters of D0-branes. As a result, we prove a non-renormalization theorem for the $v^4$ interaction.

Virtual D-Branes

Using a formalism developed to include collective coordinates, we calculate the contributions to S-matrix elements due to off-shell D-branes in a string coupling expansion. The formalism is further used to establish a two-dimensional computation of higher order corrections to the D-brane tension, both for the bosonic and the supersymmetric cases.

Collective coordinates for D-branes

We develope a formalism for the scattering off D-branes that includes collective coordinates. This allows a systematic expansion in the string coupling constant for such processes, including a worldsheet calculation for the D-brane's mass.

Collective Coordinates in String Theory

The emergence of violations of conformal invariance in the form of non-local operators in the two-dimensional action describing solitons inevitably leads to the introduction of collective coordinates as two dimensional ``wormhole parameters''.

Stability of Neutrinos in the Singlet Majoron Model

We show that there is no one-loop enhancement of the rate for a light neutrino to decay into a lighter neutrino plus a majoron, contrary to a recent claim. Thus the light neutrinos must satisfy the cosmological bound of having masses less than 35 eV in the singlet majoron model, or else violate the constraint imposed by galaxy formation. In the latter case, $ν_τ$ could have a mass between 40 and 500 keV, while satisfying all other cosmological constraints.

Bounds on Microscopic Physics from P and T Violation in Atoms and Molecules

Atomic and molecular electric dipole moments are calculated within the minimal supersymmetric standard model. Present experiments already provide strong bounds on the combination of phases responsible for the dipole moments of the neutron and closed shell atoms. For a supersymmetry breaking scale of 100 GeV, these phases must be smaller than $ \sim 10^{-2}$.
