A multi-component SIMP model with $U(1)_X \rightarrow Z_2 \times Z_3$

Multi-component dark matter scenarios are studied in the model with $U(1)_X$ dark gauge symmetry that is broken into its product subgroup $Z_2 \times Z_3$ á la Krauss-Wilczek mechanism. In this setup, there exist two types of dark matter fields, $X$ and $Y$, distinguished by different $Z_2 \times Z_3$ charges. The real and imaginary parts of the $Z_2$-charged field, $X_R$ and $X_I$, get different masses from the $U(1)_X$ symmetry breaking. The field $Y$, which is another dark matter candidate due to the unbroken $Z_3$ symmetry, belongs to the Strongly Interacting Massive Particle (SIMP)-type dark matter. Both $X_I$ and $X_R$ may contribute to $Y$'s $3\rightarrow 2$ annihilation processes, opening a new class of SIMP models with a local dark gauge symmetry. Depending on the mass difference between $X_I$ and $X_R$, we have either two-component or three-component dark matter scenarios. In particular two- or three-component SIMP scenarios can be realised not only for small mass difference between $X$ and $Y$, but also for large mass hierarchy between them, which is a new and unique feature of the present model. We consider both theoretical and experimental constraints, and present four case studies of the multi-component dark matter scenarios.

Exothermic dark mesons in light of electron recoil excess at XENON1T

We consider a novel mechanism to realize exothermic dark matter with dark mesons in the limit of approximate flavor symmetry in a dark QCD. We introduce a local dark $U(1)'$ symmetry to communicate between dark mesons and the Standard Model via $Z'$ portal by partially gauging the dark flavor symmetry with flavor-dependent charges for cancelling chiral anomalies in the dark sector. After the dark local $U(1)'$ is broken spontaneously by the VEV of a dark Higgs, there appear small mass splittings between dark quarks, consequently, leading to small split masses for dark mesons, required to explain the electron recoil excess in XENON1T by the inelastic scattering between dark mesons and electron. We propose a concrete benchmark model for split dark mesons based on $SU(3)_L\times SU(3)_R/ SU(3)_V$ flavor symmetry and $SU(N_c)$ color group and show that there exists a parameter space making a better fit to the XENON1T data with two correlated peaks from exothermic processes and satisfying the correct relic density, current experimental and theoretical constraints.

Connecting between inflation and dark matter in models with gauged $Z_3$ symmetry

We investigate the possibility of unifying the inflation and dark matter physics in the minimal model for a complex scalar dark matter with gauged $Z_3$ symmetry. The dark local $U(1)$ symmetry is broken spontaneously into the $Z_3$ symmetry by the dark Higgs mechanism. As compared to dark matter models with $Z_2$ parity, the dark matter cubic self-interaction restricts the inflation with non-minimal couplings to take place beyond the pure dark matter direction and plays an important role in the loop corrections for the inflationary predictions as well as determining the correct dark matter relic density. Considering either of $2\rightarrow 2$, $3\rightarrow 2$ or forbidden channels to be a dominant production mechanism for dark matter, we show the viable parameter space of the model that is consistent with the theoretical and phenomenological constraints combined from inflation and dark matter.

Unitary inflaton as decaying dark matter

We consider the inflation model of a singlet scalar field (sigma field) with both quadratic and linear non-minimal couplings where unitarity is ensured up to the Planck scale. We assume that a $Z_2$ symmetry for the sigma field is respected by the scalar potential in Jordan frame but it is broken explicitly by the linear non-minimal coupling due to quantum gravity. We discuss the impacts of the linear non-minimal coupling on various dynamics from inflation to low energy, such as a sizable tensor-to-scalar ratio, a novel reheating process with quartic potential dominance, and suppressed physical parameters in the low energy, etc. In particular, the linear non-minimal coupling leads to the linear couplings of the sigma field to the Standard Model through the trace of the energy-momentum tensor in Einstein frame. Thus, regarding the sigma field as a decaying dark matter, we consider the non-thermal production mechanisms for dark matter from the decays of Higgs and inflaton condensate and show the parameter space that is compatible with the correct relic density and cosmological constraints.

Vector SIMP dark matter with approximate custodial symmetry

We consider a novel scenario for Vector Strongly Interacting Massive Particle (VSIMP) dark matter with local $SU(2)_X\times U(1)_{Z'}$ symmetry in the dark sector. Similarly to the Standard Model, after the dark symmetry is broken spontaneously by the VEVs of dark Higgs fields, the approximate custodial symmetry determines comparable but split masses for $SU(2)_X$ gauge bosons. In this model, we show that $U(1)_{Z'}$-charged gauge boson of $SU(2)_X$ ($X_\pm$) becomes a natural candidate for SIMP dark matter, annihilating through $3\rightarrow 2$ or forbidden $2\rightarrow 2$ annihilations due to gauge self-interactions. On the other hand, the $U(1)_{Z'}$-neutral gauge boson of $SU(2)_X$ achieves the kinetic equilibrium of dark matter through a gauge kinetic mixing between $U(1)_{Z'}$ and Standard Model. We present the parameter space for the correct relic density in our model and discuss in detail the current constraints and projections from colliders and direct detection experiments.

Unitarizing SIMP scenario with dark vector resonances

Dark pion is the one of the most natural and realistic model to make $3 \rightarrow 2$ contact interactions among models of the Strongly Interacting Massive Particle (SIMP). In this model, there is a perturbativity problem to satisfy the relic density with the self-annihilation. So we show the perturbativity problem can be alleviated and the SIMP pion model become more realistic by including dark vector mesons.

Lepto-Quark Portal Dark Matter

We consider the extension of the Standard Model with scalar leptoquarks as a portal to dark matter (DM), motivated by the recent anomalies in semi-leptonic $B$-meson decays. Taking singlet and triplet scalar leptoquarks as the best scenarios for explaining $B$-meson anomalies, we discuss the phenomenological constraints from rare meson decays, muon $(g-2)_μ$, and leptoquark searches at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Introducing leptoquark couplings to scalar dark matter, we find that the DM annihilations into a pair of leptoquarks open a wide parameter space, being compatible with XENON1T bound, and show that there is an interesting interplay between LHC leptoquark searches and distinct signatures from cascade annihilations of dark matter.

Resolving phenomenological problems with strongly-interacting-massive-particle models with dark vector resonances

We consider a light dark matter candidate which is produced by the freeze-out mechanism with $3\rightarrow2$ annihilations, the so called Strongly Interacting Massive Particles (SIMPs). SIMPs are identified as dark pions in dark chiral perturbation theory (ChPT) where both light mass and strong coupling needed for SIMPs can be realized by strong dynamics. In QCD-like theories with $SU(3)_L \times SU(3)_R /SU(3)_V$ flavor symmetry, including dark vector mesons in the hidden local symmetry scheme, we illustrate that dark vector mesons unitarize the dark ChPT efficiently, thus determine the correct relic density condition within the validity of the dark ChPT.

Vector SIMP dark matter

Strongly Interacting Massive Particles (SIMPs) have recently been proposed as light thermal dark matter relics. Here we consider an explicit realization of the SIMP mechanism in the form of vector SIMPs arising from an $SU(2)_X$ hidden gauge theory, where the accidental custodial symmetry protects the stability of the dark matter. We propose several ways of equilibrating the dark and visible sectors in this setup. In particular, we show that a light dark Higgs portal can maintain thermal equilibrium between the two sectors, as can a massive dark vector portal with its generalized Chern-Simons couplings to the vector SIMPs, all while remaining consistent with experimental constraints.

A minimal flavored $U(1)'$ for $B$-meson anomalies

We consider an anomaly-free $U(1)'$ model with favorable couplings to heavy flavors in the Standard Model(SM), as motivated by $B$-meson anomalies at LHCb. Taking the $U(1)'$ charge to be $Q'=y(L_μ-L_τ)+ x(B_3-L_3)$, we can explain the $B$-meson anomalies without invoking extra charged fermions or flavor violation beyond the SM. We show that there is a viable parameter space with a small $x$ that is compatible with other meson decays, tau lepton and neutrino experiments as well as the LHC dimuon searches. We briefly discuss the prospects of discovering the $Z'$ gauge boson at the LHC in the proposed model.

SIMP dark matter and its cosmic abundances

We give a review on the thermal average of the annihilation cross-sections for $3\rightarrow 2$ and general higher-order processes. Thermal average of higher order annihilations highly depend on the velocity of dark matter, especially, for the case with resonance poles. We show such examples for scalar dark matter in gauged $Z_3$ models.

Forbidden Channels and SIMP Dark Matter

In this review, we focus on dark matter production from thermal freeze-out with forbidden channels and SIMP processes. We show that forbidden channels can be dominant to produce dark matter depending on the dark photon and / or dark Higgs mass compared to SIMP.

Cosmic abundances of SIMP dark matter

Thermal production of light dark matter with sub-GeV scale mass can be attributed to $3\rightarrow 2$ self-annihilation processes. We consider the thermal average for annihilation cross sections of dark matter at $3\rightarrow 2$ and general higher-order interactions. A correct thermal average for initial dark matter particles is important, in particular, for annihilation cross sections with overall velocity dependence and/or resonance poles. We apply our general results to benchmark models for SIMP dark matter and discuss the effects of the resonance pole in determining the relic density.

On thermal production of self-interacting dark matter

We consider thermal production mechanisms of self-interacting dark matter in models with gauged $Z_3$ symmetry. A complex scalar dark matter is stabilized by the $Z_3$, that is the remnant of a local dark $U(1)_d$. Light dark matter with large self-interaction can be produced from thermal freeze-out in the presence of SM-annihilation, SIMP and/or forbidden channels. We show that dark photon and/or dark Higgs should be relatively light for unitarity and then assist the thermal freeze-out. We identify the constraints on the parameter space of dark matter self-interaction and mass in cases that one or some of the channels are important in determining the relic density.

Diphoton resonance confronts dark matter

As an interpretation of the 750 GeV diphoton excesses recently reported by both ATLAS and CMS collaborations, we consider a simple extension of the Standard Model with a Dirac fermion dark matter where a singlet complex scalar field mediates between dark matter and SM particles via effective couplings to SM gauge bosons and/or Higgs-portal. In this model, we can accommodate the diphoton events through the direct and/or cascade decays of pseudo-scalar and real scalar partners of the complex scalar field. We show that mono-jet searches and gamma-ray observations are complementary in constraining the region where the width of the diphoton resonance can be enhanced due to the couplings of the resonance to dark matter and the correct relic density is obtained. In the case of cascade decay of the resonance, the effective couplings of singlet scalars can be smaller, but the model is still testable by the future discrimination between single photon and photon-jet at the LHC as well as the gamma-ray searches for the cascade annihilation of dark matter.

Inflection point inflation and reheating

We revisit the inflection point inflation with an extended discussion to large field values and consider the reheating effects on the inflationary predictions. Parametrizing the reheating dynamics in terms of the reheating temperature and the equation of state during inflation, we show how the observationally favored parameter space of inflection point inflation is affected by reheating dynamics. Consequently, we apply the general results to the inflation models with non-minimal coupling, such as the SM Higgs inflation and the $B-L$ Higgs inflation.

Resonant SIMP dark matter

We consider a resonant SIMP dark matter in models with two singlet complex scalar fields charged under a local dark $U(1)_D$. After the $U(1)_D$ is broken down to a $Z_5$ discrete subgroup, the lighter scalar field becomes a SIMP dark matter which has the enhanced $3\rightarrow 2$ annihilation cross section near the resonance of the heavier scalar field. Bounds on the SIMP self-scattering cross section and the relic density can be fulfilled at the same time for perturbative couplings of SIMP. A small gauge kinetic mixing between the SM hypercharge and dark gauge bosons can be used to make SIMP dark matter in kinetic equilibrium with the SM during freeze-out.
