Sticky Normal-Superconductor Interface

We study the quantum Goos-Hänchen(GH) effect for wave-packet dynamics at a normal/superconductor (NS) interface. We find that the effect is amplified by a factor $(E_F/Δ)$, with $E_F$ the Fermi energy and $Δ$ the gap. Interestingly, the GH effect appears only as a time delay $δt$ without any lateral shift, and the corresponding delay length is about $(E_F/Δ)λ_F$, with $λ_F$ the Fermi wavelength. This makes the NS interface "sticky" when $Δ\ll E_F$, since typically GH effects are of wavelength order. This "sticky" behavior can be further enhanced by a resonance mode in NSNS interface. Finally, for a large $Δ$, the resonance-mode effect makes a transition from Andreev to the specular electron reflection as the width of the sandwiched superconductor is reduced.

Analysis of multiple exceptional points related to three interacting eigenmodes in a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian

We have investigated the exceptional points (EPs) which are degeneracies of a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian, in the case that three modes are interacting with each other. Even though the parametric evolution of the modes cannot be uniquely determined when encircling more than two EPs once, we can recover the initial configuration of the modes by encircling two EPs three times or three EPs twice. We confirm our expectation by numerically calculating the modes of an open quantum system, two dielectric microdisks, and 3$\times$3 matrix model.

Quasiscarred modes and their branching behavior at an exceptional point

We study quasiscarring phenomenon and mode branching at an exceptional point (EP) in typically deformed microcavities. It is shown that quasiscarred (QS) modes are dominant in some mode group and their pattern can be understood by short-time ray dynamics near the critical line. As cavity deformation increases, high-Q and low-Q QS modes are branching in an opposite way, at an EP, into two robust mode types showing QS and diamond patterns, respectively. Similar branching behavior can be also found at another EP appearing at a higher deformation. This branching behavior of QS modes has its origin on the fact that an EP is a square-root branch point.

Observation of an exceptional point in a chaotic optical microcavity

We present spectroscopic observation of an exceptional point or the transition point between diabatic crossing and avoided crossing of neighboring quasi-eigenmodes in a chaotic optical microcavity with a large size parameter. The transition to the avoided crossing was impeded until the degree of deformation exceeded a threshold deformation owing to the system's openness also enhanced by the shape deformation. As a result, a singular topology was observed around the exceptional point on the eigenfrequency surfaces, resulting in fundamental inconsistency in mode labeling.

Coupled non-identical microdisks: avoided crossing of energy levels and unidirectional far-field emission

We investigate two coupled microdisks with non-identical radii focusing on the parametric evolution of energy levels and the unidirectional far-field emission. We show that the evolution of energy levels is characterized by the avoided crossing intrinsically associated with the exceptional point or the non-Hermitian degeneracy. These spectral properties explain highly asymmetric near-field intensity pattern of the resonance mode. The observed unidirectional far-field emission is shown to be understood by considering the forbidden inter-disk coupling in the ray picture induced by the frustrated total internal reflection near the closest point between two disks when the inter-disk distance is small enough.

Quasi-Eigenstate Evolution in Open Chaotic Billiards

We experimentally studied evolution of quasi-eigenmodes as classical dynamics undergoing a transition from being regular to chaotic in open quantum billiards. In a deformation-variable microcavity we traced all high-Q cavity modes in a wide range of frequency as the cavity deformation increased. By employing an internal parameter we were able to obtain a mode-dynamics diagram at a given deformation, showing avoided crossings between different mode groups, and could directly observe the coupling strengths induced by ray chaos among encountering modes. We also show that the observed mode-dynamics diagrams reflect the underlying classical ray dynamics in the phase space.

Resonances in a circular dielectric cavity

We study resonance distributions in a circular dielectric cavity. It is shown that the decay-rate distribution has a peak structure and the details of the peak are consistent with the classical survival probability time distribution. We also investigate the behavior of the complex resonance positions at the small opening limit. At the large $n$ limit, the real part of complex resonance positions approaches the solutions with different $m$ of Dirichlet problem with a scale $n^{-2}$ and the imaginary part goes zero as $n^{-2m}$ for TM and $n^{-2(m+1)}$ for TE polarization, where $m$ is the order of the resonance.

Transport control in deterministic ratchet system

We study the control of transport properties in a deterministic inertia ratchet system via the extended delay feedback method. A chaotic current of a deterministic inertia ratchet system is controlled to a regular current by stabilizing unstable periodic orbits embedded in a chaotic attractor of the unperturbed system. By selecting an unstable periodic orbit, which has a desired transport property, and stabilizing it via the extended delay feedback method, we can control transport properties of the deterministic inertia ratchet system. Also, we show that the extended delay feedback method can be utilized for separation of particles in the deterministic inertia ratchet system as a particle's initial condition varies.

Directional interacting whispering gallery modes in coupled dielectric microdisks

We study the optical interaction in a coupled dielectric microdisks by investigating the splitting of resonance positions of interacting whispering gallery modes (WGMs) and their pattern change, depending on the distance between the microdisks. It is shown that the interaction between the WGMs with odd parity about y-axis becomes appreciable at a distance less than a wavelength and causes directional emissions of the resulting interacting WGMs. The directionality of the interacting WGMs can be understood in terms of an effective boundary deformation in ray dynamical analysis. We also discuss about the oscillation of the splitting when the distance is greater than a wavelength.

Survival probability time distribution in dielectric cavities

We study the survival probability time distribution (SPTD) in dielectric cavities. In a circular dielectric cavity the SPTD has an algebraic long time behavior, $\sim t^{-2}$ in both TM and TE cases, but shows different short time behaviors due to the existence of the Brewster angle in TE case where the short time behavior is exponential. The SPTD for a stadium-shaped cavity decays exponentially, and the exponent shows a relation of $γ\sim n^{-2}$, $n$ is the refractive index, and the proportional coefficient is obtained from a simple model of the steady probability distribution. We also discuss about the SPTD for a quadrupolar deformed cavity and show that the long time behavior can be algebraic or exponential depending on the location of islands.

Scarred Resonances and Steady Probability Distribution in a Chaotic Microcavity

We investigate scarred resonances of a stadium-shaped chaotic microcavity. It is shown that two components with different chirality of the scarring pattern are slightly rotated in opposite ways from the underlying unstable periodic orbit, when the incident angles of the scarring pattern are close to the critical angle for total internal reflection. In addition, the correspondence of emission pattern with the scarring pattern disappears when the incident angles are much larger than the critical angle. The steady probability distribution gives a consistent explanation about these interesting phenomena and makes it possible to expect the emission pattern in the latter case.

Chaos Synchronization of delayed systems in the presence of delay time modulation

We investigate synchronization in the presence of delay time modulation for application to communication. We have observed that the robust synchronization is established by a common delay signal and its threshold is presented using Lyapunov exponents analysis. The influence of the delay time modulation in chaotic oscillators is also discussed.

Resonance Patterns in a Stadium-shaped Microcavity

We investigate resonance patterns in a stadium-shaped microcavity around $n_ck R \simeq 10$, where $n_c$ is the refractive index, $k$ the vacuum wavenumber, and $R$ the radius of the circular part of the cavity. We find that the patterns of high $Q$ resonances can be classified, even though the classical dynamics of the stadium system is chaotic. The patterns of the high $Q$ resonances are consistent with the ray dynamical consideration, and appears as the stationary lasing modes with low pumping rate in the nonlinear dynamical model. All resonance patterns are presented in a finite range of $kR$.

Quasi-Scarred Resonances in a Spiral-Shaped Microcavity

We study resonance patterns of a spiral-shaped dielectric microcavity with chaotic ray dynamics. Many resonance patterns of this microcavity, with refractive indices $n=2$ and 3, exhibit strong localization of simple geometric shape, and we call them {\em quasi-scarred resonances} in the sense that there is, unlike the conventional scarring, no underlying periodic orbits. It is shown that the formation of quasi-scarred pattern can be understood in ter ms of ray dynamical probability distributions and wave properties like uncertainty and interference.

Wavefunction Statistics using Scar States

We describe the statistics of chaotic wavefunctions near periodic orbits using a basis of states which optimise the effect of scarring. These states reflect the underlying structure of stable and unstable manifolds in phase space and provide a natural means of characterising scarring effects in individual wavefunctions as well as their collective statistical properties. In particular, these states may be used to find scarring in regions of the spectrum normally associated with antiscarring and suggest a characterisation of templates for scarred wavefunctions which vary over the spectrum. The results are applied to quantum maps and billiard systems.

Scarring and the statistics of tunnelling

We show that the statistics of tunnelling can be dramatically affected by scarring and derive distributions quantifying this effect. Strong deviations from the prediction of random matrix theory can be explained quantitatively by modifying the Gaussian distribution which describes wavefunction statistics. The modified distribution depends on classical parameters which are determined completely by linearised dynamics around a periodic orbit. This distribution generalises the scarring theory of Kaplan [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 80}, 2582 (1998)] to describe the statistics of the components of the wavefunction in a complete basis, rather than overlaps with single Gaussian wavepackets. In particular it is shown that correlations in the components of the wavefunction are present, which can strongly influence tunnelling-rate statistics. The resulting distribution for tunnelling rates is tested successfully on a two-dimensional double-well potential.

Geometrical phase effects in biaxial nanomagentic particles

The oscillation of tunnel splitting are obtained by geometrical analysis of the topological Wess-Zumino phase on the basis of tunneling paths in biaxial nanomagnetic particles with magnetic field along the hard anisotropy axis. This theory not only just yields the previous quantum interference results for the ground state tunneling, but also gives the excited level splittings, all of which agree well with the numerical diagonalization. Furthermore, the parity effect in the asymmetric system which was recently discovered in experiment can be derived by similar arguments, and is also certified by using the complex periodic orbit theory. The possibility of improving the discrepancy with the experiment in the periods of oscillations is discussed.

Resonant tunnelling and quenching of tunnel splitting in Wess-Zumino nanospin systems

We investigate the energy spectrum of the biaxial spin systems with magnetic field along the hard anisotropy axis by using the complex periodic orbit theory. All important features of the system appearing in whole energy range, such as oscillations of level splittings due to Wess-Zumino effect and their absence at higher magnetic field etc., can be completely understood within this semiclassical scheme. We find out that the fields at which the tunnelling quenches do not shift at higher energy levels and the absences of the quenching at higher magnetic field have their origin in an exact coincidence of the quenching field with the field of resonant tunnelling. Based on the result, we propose that the complete cancellation of quenching with resonant tunnelling would be a general property of Wess-Zumino tunnelling systems.
