Probing gluon TMDs with reconstructed and tagged heavy flavor hadron pairs at EIC

Study of the transverse structure of the proton is one of the major physics goals of the upcoming Electron Ion Collider (EIC). The gluon transverse momentum dependent distributions (TMD) form an essential focus of this effort and are important towards understanding the angular momentum contribution to proton spin as well as QCD factorization. However, very limited experimental constraints on the gluon TMD exist currently. As the heavy quark production in lepton-nucleon DIS gets a dominant contribution from the photon-gluon-fusion process, heavy quark production makes an attractive tool to probe gluon distributions in nucleons. In this paper we present a study of heavy flavor hadron pair reconstruction at a future EIC detector with MAPS based inner tracking and vertexing subsystems to constrain gluon TMD. We utilize the excellent track pointing resolution provided by the detector to exclusively reconstruct heavy flavor hadron pairs via their hadronic decay channels and also to develop a heavy flavor hadron tagging algorithm. Statistical uncertainty projections on azimuthal asymmetries corresponding to gluon TMD at the EIC is evaluated. The heavy flavor tagging is found to substantially enhance the purity of heavy flavor hadron pair selection, and the statistical precision of the measurement compared to that from exclusive reconstruction. The correlation between the azimuthal angle of the transverse momentum of the gluon initiating the process and that of the corresponding heavy flavor hadron pair was also studied and found to be well correlated. This study opens up heavy flavor hadron pair measurements as an attractive channel to access gluon TMD at the EIC.

Constraints on Gluon Distribution Functions in the Nucleon and Nucleus from Open Charm Hadron Production at the Electron-Ion Collider

The Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory will be a precision Quantum Chromodynamics machine that will enable a vast physics program with electron+proton/ion collisions across a broad center-of-mass range. Measurements of hard probes such as heavy flavor in deep inelastic scatterings will be an essential component to the EIC physics program and are one of the detector R\&D driving aspects. In this paper we study the projected statistical precision of open charm hadron production through exclusive hadronic channel reconstruction with a silicon detector concept currently being developed using a PYTHIA-based simulation. We further study the impact of possible intrinsic charm in the proton on projected data, and estimate the constraint on the nuclear gluon parton distribution function (PDF) from the charm structure functions $F_{2}^{c\overline{c}}$ in $e$+Au collisions using a Bayesian PDF re-weighting technique. Our studies show the EIC will be capable delivering an unprecedented measurement of charm hadron production across a broad kinematic region and will provide strong constraints to both intrinsic charm and nuclear gluon PDFs.

Probing gluon helicity with heavy flavor at the EIC

We propose a new measurement of the heavy flavor hadron double spin asymmetry in deep-inelastic scattering at a future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) to constrain the polarized gluon distribution function inside the proton. Statistical projection on $D^0$ meson double spin asymmetry is calculated with an EIC central detector using an all-silicon tracker and vertexing subsystem. A first impact study was done by interpreting pseudo-data at next-to-leading order in QCD. The sensitivity of the experimental observable in constraining gluon helicity distribution in a wide range of parton momentum fraction $x$ has been investigated considering different beam energy configurations. This measurement complements the inclusive spin-dependent structure function measurement and provides an opportunity to constrain the gluon helicity distribution in the moderate $x$ region.

EIC Physics from An All-Silicon Tracking Detector

The proposed electron-ion collider has a rich physics program to study the internal structure of protons and heavy nuclei. This program will impose strict requirements on detector design. This paper explores how these requirements can be satisfied using an all-silicon tracking detector, by consideration of three representative probes: heavy flavor hadrons, jets, and exclusive vector mesons.

Forward-backward multiplicity fluctuation and longitudinal harmonics in high-energy nuclear collisions

An analysis method is proposed to study the forward-backward (FB) multiplicity fluctuation in high-energy nuclear collisions, built on the earlier work of Bzdak and Teaney. The method allows the decomposition of the centrality dependence of average multiplicity from the dynamical event-by-event (EbyE) fluctuation of multiplicity in pseudorapidity. Application of the method to AMPT and HIJING models shows that the long-range component of the FB correlation is captured by a few longitudinal harmonics, with the first component driven by the asymmetry in the number of participating nucleons in the two colliding nuclei. The higher-order longitudinal harmonics are found to be strongly damped in AMPT compare to HIJING, due to weaker short-range correlations as well as the final-state effects present in the AMPT model. Two-particle pseudorapidity correlation reveals interesting charge-dependent short-range structures that are absent in HIJING model. The proposed method opens an avenue to elucidate the particle production mechanism and early time dynamics in heavy-ion collisions. Future analysis directions and prospects of using the pseudorapidity correlation function to understand the centrality bias in $p$+$p$, $p$+A and A+A collisions are discussed.

Measurement of two particle pseudorapidity correlations in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 2.76 TeV with the ATLAS detector

Two-particle pseudorapidity correlations, measured using charged particles with $p_{\mathrm{T}} >$ 0.5 GeV and $|η| <$ 2.4, from $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 2.76 TeV Pb+Pb collisions collected in 2010 by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC are presented. The correlation function $C_N(η_1,η_2)$ is measured for different centrality intervals as a function of the pseudorapidity of the two particles, $η_1$ and $η_2$. The correlation function shows an enhancement along $η_- \equiv η_1 - η_2 \approx$ 0 and a suppression at large $η_-$ values. The correlation function also shows a quadratic dependence along the $η_+ \equiv η_1$ + $η_2$ direction. These structures are consistent with a strong forward-backward asymmetry of the particle multiplicity that fluctuates event to event. The correlation function is expanded in an orthonormal basis of Legendre polynomials, $T_n(η_1)T_m(η_2)$, and corresponding coefficients $a_{n,m}$ are measured. These coefficients are related to mean-square values of the Legendre coefficients, $a_n$, of the single particle longitudinal multiplicity fluctuations: $a_{n,m} = \langle a_na_m \rangle$. Significant values are observed for the diagonal terms $\langle a_n^2 \rangle$ and mixed terms $\langle a_na_{n+2}\rangle$. Magnitude of $\langle a_{\mathrm{1}}^{\mathrm{2}} \rangle$ is the largest and the higher order terms decrease quickly with increase in $n$. The centrality dependence of the leading coefficient $\langle a_{\mathrm{1}}^{\mathrm{2}} \rangle$ is compared to that of the mean-square value of the asymmetry of the number of participating nucleons between the two colliding nuclei, and also to the $\langle a_{\mathrm{1}}^{\mathrm{2}} \rangle$ calculated from HIJING.
