Superconductivity emerging from a stripe charge order in IrTe2 nanoflakes

Superconductivity in the vicinity of a competing electronic order often manifests itself with a superconducting dome, centred at a presumed quantum critical point in the phase diagram. This common feature, found in many unconventional superconductors, has supported a prevalent scenario that fluctuations or partial melting of a parent order are essential for inducing or enhancing superconductivity. Here we present a contrary example, found in IrTe2 nanoflakes of which the superconducting dome is identified well inside the parent stripe charge ordering phase in the thickness-dependent phase diagram. The coexisting stripe charge order in IrTe2 nanoflakes significantly increases the out-of-plane coherence length and the coupling strength of superconductivity, in contrast to the doped bulk IrTe2. These findings clarify that the inherent instabilities of the parent stripe phaseare sufficient to induce superconductivity in IrTe2 without its complete or partial melting. Our study highlights the thickness control as an effective means to unveil intrinsic phase diagrams of correlated vdW materials.

Quantification of Coulomb Interactions in layered Lithium and Sodium Battery Cathode Materials

Despite the importance of the electron correlation in the first-principles description of the Li-ion cathode materials, the Coulomb interaction parameter, U is often treated as an ad hoc value. In practice, one usually relies on empirical ways of parametric treatment of U to optimally match the experimentally observed physical properties such as band gap or reaction energy. Here, using constrained random phase approximation (cRPA) method, we self-consistently evaluate the Coulomb U and Hund J values for representative layered cathode materials including not only Li compounds but also Na compounds; LiCoO2, LiNiO2, LiMnO2, NaCoO2, NaNiO2, and NaMnO2. We found that the Coulomb interaction parameters for Li and Na compounds and their polymorphs with different layer stackings do not deviate much, which shows the dominant role of local environment rather than of global structural features. We have analyzed the origin of variable Coulomb parameters, which is mainly due to the competition between the localization and screening. We provided cRPA Coulomb parameters for battery cathode materials and validate the values by observing systematic improvement in describing the experimentally observed average intercalation voltage and lattice parameters. These results can be applied for the first-principles calculations as well as model-based simulations for the theoretical investigation of cathode systems.

Reply to "Comment on 'Apical charge flux-modulated in-plane transport properties of cuprate superconductors'"

This Reply to preceding Comment of arXiv:1909.09867 shows why the statements in the Comment are misleading. We point out that our physical picture and theirs are fundamentally different, therefore the claim of using their correlation to include ours shows a very limited physical relevance, which instead may impede the precise understanding of either of the two pictures.

The role of Coulomb correlation in charge density wave of CuTe

A quasi one-dimensional layered material, CuTe undergoes a charge density wave (CDW) transition in Te chains with a modulation vector of $q_{CDW}=(0.4, 0.0, 0.5)$. Despite the clear experimental evidence for the CDW, the theoretical understanding especially the role of the electron-electron correlation in the CDW has not been fully explored. Here, using first principles calculations, we demonstrate the correlation effect of Cu is critical to stabilize the 5$\times$1$\times$2 modulation of Te chains. We find that the phonon calculation with the strong Coulomb correlation exhibits the imaginary phonon frequency so-called phonon soft mode at $q_{ph0}=(0.4, 0.0, 0.5)$ indicating the structural instability. The corresponding lattice distortion of the soft mode agrees well with the experimental modulation. These results demonstrate that the CDW transition in CuTe originates from the interplay of the Coulomb correlation and electron-phonon interaction.

Emergence of Kondo resonance in graphene intercalated with cerium

The interaction between a magnetic impurity, such as cerium (Ce) atom, and surrounding electrons has been one of the core problems in understanding many-body interaction in solid and its relation to magnetism. Kondo effect, the formation of a new resonant ground state with quenched magnetic moment, provides a general framework to describe many-body interaction in the presence of magnetic impurity. In this Letter, a combined study of angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) and dynamic mean-field theory (DMFT) on Ce-intercalated graphene shows that Ce-induced localized states near Fermi energy, $E_{\rm F}$, hybridized with the graphene $π$ band, exhibit gradual increase in spectral weight upon decreasing temperature. The observed temperature dependence follows the expectations from the Kondo picture in the weak coupling limit. Our results provide a novel insight how Kondo physics emerges in the sea of two-dimensional Dirac electrons.

Nanoscale Superconducting Honeycomb Charge Order in IrTe2

Entanglement of charge orderings and other electronic orders such as superconductivity is in the core of challenging physics issues of complex materials including high temperature superconductivity. Here, we report on the observation of a unique nanometer scale honeycomb charge ordering of the cleaved IrTe2 surface, which hosts a superconducting state. IrTe2 was recently established to exhibit an intriguing cascade of stripe charge orders. The stripe phases coexist with a hexagonal phase, which is formed locally and falls into a superconducting state below 3 K. The atomic and electronic structures of the honeycomb and hexagon pattern of this phase are consistent with the charge order nature but the superconductivity does not survive on neighboring stripe charge order domains. The present work provides an intriguing physics issue and a new direction of functionalization for two dimensional materials.

Magnetic effects in sulfur-decorated graphene

The interaction between two different materials can present novel phenomena that are quite different from the physical properties observed when each material stands alone. Strong electronic correlations, such as magnetism and superconductivity, can be produced as the result of enhanced Coulomb interactions between electrons. Two-dimensional materials are powerful candidates to search for the novel phenomena because of the easiness of arranging them and modifying their properties accordingly. In this work, we report magnetic effects of graphene, a prototypical non-magnetic two-dimensional semi-metal, in the proximity with sulfur, a diamagnetic insulator. In contrast to the well-defined metallic behaviour of clean graphene, an energy gap develops at the Fermi energy for the graphene/sulfur compound with decreasing temperature. This is accompanied by a steep increase of the resistance, a sign change of the slope in the magneto-resistance between high and low fields, and magnetic hysteresis. A possible origin of the observed electronic and magnetic responses is discussed in terms of the onset of low-temperature magnetic ordering. These results provide intriguing insights on the search for novel quantum phases in graphene-based compounds.

The coexistence of charge density wave and superconductivity in Pt-based layered superconductors : SrPt$_2$As$_2$ and LaPt$_2$Si$_2$

The intriguing coexistence of the charge density wave (CDW) and superconductivity in SrPt$_2$As$_2$ and LaPt$_2$Si$_2$ has been investigated based on the {\it ab initio} density functional theory band structure and phonon calculations. We have found that the local split distortions Pt atoms in the [As-Pt-As] layers play an essential role in driving the five-fold supercell CDW instability as well as the phonon softening instability in SrPt$_2$As$_2$. By contrast, the CDW and phonon softening instabilities in LaPt$_2$Si$_2$ occur without split distortions of Pt atoms, indicating that the driving mechanisms of the CDW in SrPt$_2$As$_2$ and LaPt$_2$Si$_2$ are different. We have found that the CDW instability for the former arises from the Fermi surface nesting, while, for the latter, from the saddle point scattering. The phonon calculations, however, suggest that the CDW and the superconductivity coexist in [{\it X}-Pt-{\it X}] layers ({\it X} = As or Si) for both cases.

Structural instability and the Mott-Peierls transition in a half-metallic hollandite : K$_{2}$Cr$_{8}$O$_{16}$

In order to explore the driving mechanism of the concomitant metal-insulator and structural transitions in quasi-one-dimensional hollandite K$_{2}$Cr$_{8}$O$_{16}$, electronic structures and phonon properties are investigated by employing the {\it ab initio} density functional theory (DFT) calculations. We have found that the imaginary phonon frequency reflecting the structural instability appears only in the DFT+$U$ ($U$: Coulomb correlation) calculation, which indicates that the Coulomb correlation plays an essential role in the structural transition. The lattice displacements of the softened phonon at X explain the observed lattice distortions in K$_{2}$Cr$_{8}$O$_{16}$ perfectly well, suggesting the Peierls distortion vector {\bf Q} of X (0, 0, 1/2). The combined study of electronic and phonon properties reveals that half-metallic K$_{2}$Cr$_{8}$O$_{16}$, upon cooling, undergoes the correlation-assisted Peierls transition to become a Mott-Peierls ferromagnetic insulator at low temperature.

Termination-dependent Surface In-gap States in a Mixed-valent Topological Insulator: SmB$_6$

We have investigated the surface states of a potential mixed-valent topological insulator SmB$_6$ based on the first principles density functional theory slab band structure analysis. We have found that metallic surface states are formed in the bulk band gap region, providing evidence for the topological insulating nature of SmB$_6$. The obtained surface in-gap states are quite different from those in existing reports in that they are formed differently depending on the Sm or B$_6$ surface termination, and are composed of mainly Sm $4f$ state indicating the essentiality of including $f$ electrons in describing the surface states. We have obtained the spin chiral structures of the Fermi surfaces, which are also in accordance with the topological insulating nature of SmB$_6$.

Correlation Assisted Phonon Softenings and the Mott-Peierls Transition in VO$_{2}$

To explore the driving mechanisms of the metal-insulator transition (MIT) and the structural transition in VO2, we have investigated phonon dispersions of rutile VO2 (R-VO2) in the DFT and the DFT+U (U : Coulomb correlation) band calculations. We have found that the phonon softening instabilities occur in both cases, but the softened phonon mode only in the DFT+U describes properly both the MIT and the structural transition from R-VO2 to monoclinic VO2 (M1-VO2). This feature demonstrates that the Coulomb correlation effect plays an essential role of assisting the Peierls transition in R-VO2. We have also found from the phonon dispersion of M1-VO2 that M1 structure becomes unstable under high pressure. We have predicted a new phase of VO2 at high pressure that has a monoclinic CaCl2-type structure with metallic nature.

Pressure-induced Phonon Softenings and the Structural and Magnetic Transitions in CrO$_{2}$

To investigate the pressure-induced structural transitions of chromium dioxide (CrO$_{2}$), phonon dispersions and total energy band structures are calculated as a function of pressure. The first structural transition has been confirmed at P$\approx$ 10 GPa from the ground state tetragonal CrO$_{2}$ (t-CrO$_{2}$) of rutile type to orthorhombic CrO$_{2}$ (o-CrO$_{2}$) of CaCl$_{2}$ type. The half-metallic property is found to be preserved in o-CrO$_{2}$. The softening of Raman-active B$_{1g}$ phonon mode, which is responsible for this structural transition, is demonstrated. The second structural transition is found to occur for P$\geq$ 61.1 GPa from ferromagnetic (FM) o-CrO$_{2}$ to nonmagnetic (NM) monoclinic CrO$_{2}$ (m-CrO$_{2}$) of MoO$_{2}$ type, which is related to the softening mode at {\bf q} = R(1/2,0,1/2). The third structural transition has been newly identified at P= 88.8 GPa from m-CrO$_{2}$ to cubic CrO$_{2}$ of CaF$_{2}$ type that is a FM insulator.
