Graph Structures for Local Distinguishability of Quantum Product States

We consider the problem of distinguishing sets of quantum product states with local operations and classical communication (LOCC). Recent work has used graph theory to identify sets of product states distinguishable with one-way LOCC. We extend these efforts to full two-way LOCC, with the first significant analysis of the set of graphs corresponding to bipartite product states that can be distinguished with two-way protocols after finitely many steps. We derive basic closure properties of the set of distinguishable graphs and identify some classes of graphs that guarantee local distinguishability and some graphs that do not. We also include several examples and forward-looking comments.

Optimising Perfect Quantum State Transfer for Timing Insensitivity

When studying the perfect transfer of a quantum state from one site to another, it is typically assumed that one can receive the arriving state at a specific instant in time, with perfect accuracy. Here, we study how sensitive perfect state transfer is to that timing. We design engineered spin chains which reduce their sensitivity, proving that this construction is asymptotically optimal. The same construction is applied to the task of creating superpositions, also known as fractional revival.

Quasiorthogonality of Commutative Algebras, Complex Hadamard Matrices, and Mutually Unbiased Measurements

We deepen the theory of quasiorthogonal and approximately quasiorthogonal operator algebras through an analysis of the commutative algebra case. We give a new approach to calculate the measure of orthogonality between two such subalgebras of matrices, based on a matrix-theoretic notion we introduce that has a connection to complex Hadamard matrices. We also show how this new tool can yield significant information on the general non-commutative case. We finish by considering quasiorthogonality for the important subclass of commutative algebras that arise from mutually unbiased bases (MUBs) and mutually unbiased measurements (MUMs) in quantum information theory. We present a number of examples throughout the work, including a subclass that arises from group algebras and Latin squares.

On Kemeny's constant and stochastic complement

Given a stochastic matrix $P$ partitioned in four blocks $P_{ij}$, $i,j=1,2$, Kemeny's constant $κ(P)$ is expressed in terms of Kemeny's constants of the stochastic complements $P_1=P_{11}+P_{12}(I-P_{22})^{-1}P_{21}$, and $P_2=P_{22}+P_{21}(I-P_{11})^{-1}P_{12}$. Specific cases concerning periodic Markov chains and Kronecker products of stochastic matrices are investigated. Bounds to Kemeny's constant of perturbed matrices are given. Relying on these theoretical results, a divide-and-conquer algorithm for the efficient computation of Kemeny's constant of graphs is designed. Numerical experiments performed on real-world problems show the high efficiency and reliability of this algorithm.

A generalization of quantum pair state transfer

An $s$-pair state in a graph is a quantum state of the form $\mathbf{e}_u+s\mathbf{e}_v$, where $u$ and $v$ are vertices in the graph and $s$ is a non-zero complex number. If $s=-1$ (resp., $s=1$), then such a state is called a pair state (resp. plus state). In this paper, we develop the theory of perfect $s$-pair state transfer in continuous quantum walks, where the Hamiltonian is taken to be the adjacency, Laplacian or signless Laplacian matrix of the graph. We characterize perfect $s$-pair state transfer in complete graphs, cycles and antipodal distance-regular graphs admitting vertex perfect state transfer. We construct infinite families of graphs with perfect $s$-pair state transfer using quotient graphs and graphs that admit fractional revival. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions such that perfect state transfer between vertices in the line graph relative to the adjacency matrix is equivalent to perfect state transfer between the plus states formed by corresponding edges in the graph relative to the signless Laplacian matrix. Finally, we characterize perfect state transfer between vertices in the line graphs of Cartesian products relative to the adjacency matrix.

A Nordhaus--Gaddum problem for the spectral gap of a graph

Let $G$ be a graph on $n$ vertices, with complement $\overline{G}$. The spectral gap of the transition probability matrix of a random walk on $G$ is used to estimate how fast the random walk becomes stationary. We prove that the larger spectral gap of $G$ and $\overline{G}$ is $Ω(1/n)$. Moreover, if all degrees are $Ω(n)$ and $n-Ω(n)$, then the larger spectral gap of $G$ and $\overline{G}$ is $Θ(1)$. We also show that if the maximum degree is $n-O(1)$ or if $G$ is a join of two graphs, then the spectral gap of $G$ is $Ω(1/n)$. Finally, we provide a family of connected graphs with connected complements such that the larger spectral gap of $G$ and $\overline{G}$ is $O(1/n^{3/4})$.

Threshold graphs, Kemeny's constant, and related random walk parameters

Kemeny's constant measures how fast a random walker moves around in a graph. Expressions for Kemeny's constant can be quite involved, and for this reason, many lines of research focus on graphs with structure that makes them amenable to more in-depth study (for example, regular graphs, acyclic graphs, and 1-connected graphs). In this article, we study Kemeny's constant for random walks on threshold graphs, which are an interesting family of graphs with properties that make examining Kemeny's constant difficult; that is, they are usually not regular, not acyclic, and not 1-connected. This article is a showcase of various techniques for calculating Kemeny's constant and related random walk parameters for graphs. We establish explicit formulae for $\mathcal{K}(G)$ in terms of the construction code of a threshold graph, and completely determine the ordering of the accessibility indices of vertices in threshold graphs.

Bounds on Kemeny's constant of a graph and the Nordhaus-Gaddum problem

We study Nordhaus-Gaddum problems for Kemeny's constant $\mathcal{K}(G)$ of a connected graph $G$. We prove bounds on $\min\{\mathcal{K}(G),\mathcal{K}(\overline{G})\}$ and the product $\mathcal{K}(G)\mathcal{K}(\overline{G})$ for various families of graphs. In particular, we show that if the maximum degree of a graph $G$ on $n$ vertices is $n-O(1)$ or $n-Ω(n)$, then $\min\{\mathcal{K}(G),\mathcal{K}(\overline{G})\}$ is at most $O(n)$.

Gram mates, sign changes in singular values, and isomorphism

We study distinct $(0,1)$ matrices $A$ and $B$, called \textit{Gram mates}, such that $AA^T=BB^T$ and $A^TA=B^TB$. We characterize Gram mates where one can be obtained from the other by changing signs of some positive singular values. We classify Gram mates such that the rank of their difference is at most $2$. Among such Gram mates, we further produce equivalent conditions in order that one is obtained from the other by changing signs of at most $2$ positive singular values. Moreover, we provide some tools for constructing Gram mates where the rank of their difference is more than $2$. Finally, we characterize non-isomorphic Gram mates whose difference is of rank $1$ with some extra conditions.

Fiedler vectors with unbalanced sign patterns

In spectral bisection, a Fielder vector is used for partitioning a graph into two connected subgraphs according to its sign pattern. In this article, we investigate graphs having Fiedler vectors with unbalanced sign patterns such that a partition can result in two connected subgraphs that are distinctly different in size. We present a characterization of graphs having a Fiedler vector with exactly one negative component, and discuss some classes of such graphs. We also establish an analogous result for regular graphs with a Fiedler vector with exactly two negative components. In particular, we examine the circumstances under which any Fiedler vector has unbalanced sign pattern according to the number of vertices with minimum degree.

Kemeny's constant and Wiener index on trees

On trees of fixed order, we show a direct relation between Kemeny's constant and Wiener index, and provide a new formula of Kemeny's constant from the relation with a combinatorial interpretation. Moreover, the relation simplifies proofs of several known results for extremal trees in terms of Kemeny's constant for random walks on trees. Finally, we provide various families of co-Kemeny's mates, which are two non-isomorphic connected graphs with the same Kemeny's constant, and we also give a necessary condition for a tree to attain maximum Kemeny's constant for trees with fixed diameter.

Strictly monotone sequences of lower and upper bounds on Perron values and their combinatorial applications

In this paper, we present monotone sequences of lower and upper bounds on the Perron value of a nonngeative matrix, and we study their strict monotonicity. Using those sequences, we provide two combinatorial applications. One is to improve bounds on Perron values of rooted trees in combinatorial settings, in order to find characteristic sets of trees. The other is to generate log-concave and log-convex sequences through the monotone sequences.

On the use of Markov chains for epidemic modeling on networks

We discuss various models for epidemics on networks that rely on Markov chains. Random walks on graphs are often used to predict epidemic spread and to investigate possible control actions to mitigate them. In this study, we demonstrate that they do not fully reflect the dynamics of epidemics, as they overestimate infection times. Accordingly, we explain how Markov chains may still be used to accurately model the virus spread, and to correctly predict infection times. We also provide an algorithm that efficiently estimates infection times via a sampling strategy. Finally, we present a novel indicator based on infection times, and we compare its node ranking properties with other centrality measures based on random walks.

Kemeny's constant for a graph with bridges

In this paper, we determine a formula for Kemeny's constant for a graph with multiple bridges, in terms of quantities that are inherent to the subgraphs obtained upon removal of all bridges and that can be computed independently. With the formula, we consider several optimization problems for Kemeny's constant for graphs with bridges, and we remark on the computational benefit of this formula for the computation of Kemeny's constant. Finally, we discuss some potential applications.

Families of graphs with twin pendent paths and the Braess edge

In the context of a random walk on an undirected graph, Kemeny's constant can measure the average travel time for a random walk between two randomly chosen vertices. We are interested in graphs that behave counter-intuitively in regard to Kemeny's constant: in particular, we examine graphs with a cut-vertex at which at least two branches are paths, regarding whether the insertion of a particular edge into a graph results in an increase of Kemeny's constant. We provide several tools for identifying such an edge in a family of graphs and for analising asymptotic behaviour of the family regarding the tendency to have that edge; and classes of particular graphs are given as examples. Furthermore, asymptotic behaviours of families of trees are described.
