Kazhdan sets in groups and equidistribution properties

Using functional and harmonic analysis methods, we study Kazhdan sets in topological groups which do not necessarily have Property (T). We provide a new criterion for a generating subset $Q$ of a group $G$ to be a Kazhdan set; it relies on the existence of a positive number $\varepsilon$ such that every unitary representation of $G$ with a $(Q,\varepsilon )$-invariant vector has a finite dimensional subrepresentation. Using this result, we give an equidistribution criterion for a generating subset of $G$ to be a Kazhdan set. In the case where $G=\mathbb{Z}$, this shows that if $(n_{k})_{k\ge 1}$ is a sequence of integers such that $(e^{2iπθn_{k}})_{k\ge 1}$ is uniformly distributed in the unit circle for all real numbers $θ$ except at most countably many, then $\{n_{k}\,;\,k\ge 1\}$ is a Kazhdan set in $\mathbb{Z}$ as soon as it generates $\mathbb{Z}$. This answers a question of Y. Shalom from [B.~Bekka, P.~de la~Harpe, A.~Valette, Kazhdan's property (T), Cambridge Univ. Press, 2008]. We also obtain characterizations of Kazhdan sets in second countable locally compact abelian groups, in the Heisenberg groups and in the group $\textrm{Aff}_{+}(\mathbb{R})$. This answers in particular a question from [B.~Bekka, P.~de la~Harpe, A.~Valette, Kazhdan's property (T), op. cit.].

Linear dynamical systems on Hilbert spaces: typical properties and explicit examples

We solve a number of questions pertaining to the dynamics of linear operators on Hilbert spaces, sometimes by using Baire category arguments and sometimes by constructing explicit examples. In particular, we prove the following results. - A typical hypercyclic operator is not topologically mixing, has no eigenvalues and admits no non-trivial invariant measure, but is densely distributionally chaotic. - A typical upper-triangular operator is ergodic in the Gaussian sense, whereas a typical operator of the form "diagonal plus backward unilateral weighted shift" is ergodic but has only countably many unimodular eigenvalues, in particular, it is ergodic but not ergodic in the Gaussian sense. - There exist Hilbert space operators which are chaotic and $\mathcal U$-frequently hypercyclic but not frequently hypercyclic, Hilbert space operators which are chaotic and frequently hypercyclic but not ergodic, and Hilbert space operators which are chaotic and topologically mixing but not $\mathcal U$-frequently hypercyclic. We complement our results by investigating the descriptive complexity of some natural classes of operators defined by dynamical properties.

Some new examples of universal hypercyclic operators in the sense of Glasner and Weiss

A bounded operator on a real or complex separable infinite-dimensional Banach space $Z$ is universal in the sense of Glasner and Weiss if for every invertible ergodic measure-preserving transformation $T$ of a standard Lebesgue probability space $(X,\mathcal {B},μ)$, there exists an $A$-invariant probability measure $ν$ on $H$ with full support such that the two dynamical systems $(X,\mathcal {B},μ;T)$ and $(H,\mathcal {B}_{H},ν;A)$ are isomorphic. We present a general and simple criterion for an operator to be universal, which allows us to characterize universal operators among unilateral or bilateral weighted shifts on $\ell_{p}$ or $c_{0}$, show the existence of universal operators on a large class of Banach spaces, and give a criterion for universality in terms of unimodular eigenvectors. We also obtain similar results for operators which are universal for all ergodic systems (not only for invertible ones), and study necessary conditions for an operator on a Hilbert space to be universal.

Invariant measures for frequently hypercyclic operators

We investigate frequently hypercyclic and chaotic linear operators from a measure-theoretic point of view. Among other things, we show that any frequently hypercyclic operator T acting on a reflexive Banach space admits an invariant probability measure with full support, which may be required to vanish on the set of all periodic vectors for T; that there exist frequently hypercyclic operators on the sequence space c_0 admitting no ergodic measure with full support; and that if an operator admits an ergodic measure with full support, then it has a comeager set of distributionally irregular vectors. We also give some necessary and sufficient conditions (which are are satisfied by all the known chaotic operators) for an operator T to admit an invariant measure supported on the set of its hypercyclic vectors and belonging to the closed convex hull of its periodic measures. Finally, we give a Baire category proof of the fact that any operator with a perfectly spanning set of unimodular eigenvectors admits an ergodic measure with full support.

A general approach to Read's type constructions of operators without non-trivial invariant closed subspaces

We present a general method for constructing operators without non-trivial invariant closed subsets on a large class of non-reflexive Banach spaces. In particular, our approach unifies and generalizes several constructions due to Read of operators without non-trivial invariant subspaces on the spaces $\ell_{1}$, $c_{0}$ or $\oplus_{\ell_{2}}J$, and without non-trivial invariant subsets on $\ell_{1}$. We also investigate how far our methods can be extended to the Hilbertian setting, and construct an operator on a quasireflexive dual Banach space which has no non-trivial $w^{*}$-closed invariant subspace.

On Read's type operators on Hilbert spaces

Using Read's construction of operators without non-trivial invariant subspaces/subsets on $\ell_{1}$ or $c_{0}$, we construct examples of operators on a Hilbert space whose set of hypercyclic vectors is "large" in various senses. We give an example of an operator such that the closure of every orbit is a closed subspace, and then, answering a question of D. Preiss, an example of an operator such that the set of its non-hypercyclic vectors is Gauss null. This operator has the property that it is orbit-unicellular, i.e. the family of the closures of its orbits is totally ordered. We also exhibit an example of an operator on a Hilbert space which is not orbit-reflexive.

An example of a minimal action of the free semi-group $\F^{+}_{2}$ on the Hilbert space

The Invariant Subset Problem on the Hilbert space is to know whether there exists a bounded linear operator $T$ on a separable infinite-dimensional Hilbert space $H$ such that the orbit $\{T^{n}x;\ n\ge 0\}$ of every non-zero vector $x\in H$ under the action of $T$ is dense in $H$. We show that there exists a bounded linear operator $T$ on a complex separable infinite-dimensional Hilbert space $H$ and a unitary operator $V$ on $H$, such that the following property holds true: for every non-zero vector $x\in H$, either $x$ or $Vx$ has a dense orbit under the action of $T$. As a consequence, we obtain in particular that there exists a minimal action of the free semi-group with two generators $\F^{+}_{2}$ on a complex separable infinite-dimensional Hilbert space $H$.

IP-Dirichlet measures and IP-rigid dynamical systems: an approach via generalized Riesz products

If $(n_{k})_{k\ge 1}$ is a strictly increasing sequence of integers, a continuous probability measure $σ$ on the unit circle $\mathbb{T}$ is said to be IP-Dirichlet with respect to $(n_{k})_{k\ge 1}$ if $\hatσ(\sum_{k\in F}n_{k})\to 1 $ as $F$ runs over all non-empty finite subsets $F$ of $\mathbb{N}$ and the minimum of $F$ tends to infinity. IP-Dirichlet measures and their connections with IP-rigid dynamical systems have been investigated recently by Aaronson, Hosseini and Lemańczyk. We simplify and generalize some of their results, using an approach involving generalized Riesz products.

Some new examples of recurrence and non-recurrence sets for products of rotations on the unit circle

We study recurrence and non-recurrence sets for dynamical systems on compact spaces, in particular for products of rotations on the unit circle T. A set of integers is called r-Bohr if it is recurrent for all products of r rotations on T, and Bohr if it is recurrent for all products of rotations on T. It is a result due to Katznelson that for each r there exist sets of integers which are r-Bohr but not (r+1)-Bohr. We present new examples of r-Bohr sets which are not Bohr, thanks to a construction which is both flexible and completely explicit. Our results are related to an old combinatorial problem of Veech concerning syndetic sets and the Bohr topology on Z, and its reformulation in terms of recurrence sets which is due to Glasner and Weiss.

Non-recurrence sets for weakly mixing linear dynamical systems

We study non-recurrence sets for weakly mixing dynamical systems by using linear dynamical systems. These are systems consisting of a bounded linear operator acting on a separable complex Banach space X, which becomes a probability space when endowed with a non-degenerate Gaussian measure. We generalize some recent results of Bergelson, del Junco, Lemańczyk and Rosenblatt, and show in particular that sets \{n_k\} such that n_{k+1}/{n_k} tends to infinity, or such that n_{k} divides n_{k+1} for each k, are non-recurrence sets for weakly mixing linear dynamical systems. We also give examples, for each r, of r-Bohr sets which are non-recurrence sets for some weakly mixing systems.

Hilbertian Jamison sequences and rigid dynamical systems

A strictly increasing sequence (n_k) of positive integers is said to be a Hilbertian Jamison sequence if for any bounded operator T on a separable Hilbert space such that the supremum over k of the norms ||T^{n_k}|| is finite, the set of eigenvalues of modulus 1 of T is at most countable. We first give a complete characterization of such sequences. We then turn to the study of rigidity sequences (n_k) for weakly mixing dynamical systems on measure spaces, and give various conditions, some of which are closely related to the Jamison condition, for a sequence to be a rigidity sequence. We obtain on our way a complete characterization of topological rigidity and uniform rigidity sequences for linear dynamical systems, and we construct in this framework examples of dynamical systems which are both weakly mixing in the measure-theoretic sense and uniformly rigid.

Frequent hypercyclicity, chaos, and unconditional Schauder decompositions

We prove that if X is any complex separable infinite-dimensional Banach space with an unconditional Schauder decomposition, X supports an operator T which is chaotic and frequently hypercyclic. In contrast with the complex case, we observe that there are real Banach spaces with an unconditional basis which support no chaotic operator.

A new class of frequently hypercyclic operators

We study a hypercyclicity property of linear dynamical systems: a bounded linear operator T acting on a separable infinite-dimensional Banach space X is said to be hypercyclic if there exists a vector x in X such that {T^{n}x : n>0} is dense in X, and frequently hypercyclic if there exists x in X such that for any non empty open subset U of X, the set {n>0 ; T^n x \in U} has positive lower density. We prove that if T is a bounded operator on X which has "sufficiently many" eigenvectors associated to eigenvalues of modulus 1 in the sense that these eigenvectors are perfectly spanning, then T is automatically frequently hypercyclic.

The rate of convergence in the method of alternating projections

A generalization of the cosine of the Friedrichs angle between two subspaces to a parameter associated to several closed subspaces of a Hilbert space is given. This parameter is used to analyze the rate of convergence in the von Neumann-Halperin method of cyclic alternating projections. General dichotomy theorems are proved, in the Hilbert or Banach space situation, providing conditions under which the alternative QUC/ASC (quick uniform convergence versus arbitrarily slow convergence) holds. Several meanings for ASC are proposed.
