Topological fragility and bilinear magnetoelectric resistance in gapless edge states

In time-reversal symmetric systems such as topological and higher-order topological insulators, 1D spin-momentum locked edge and hinge states are theoretically ``perfectly conducting'', being immune to backscattering by non-magnetic disorder. Here, we reveal a fundamental ``topological fragility'': these states exhibit a bilinear magnetoelectric resistance significantly larger than in 2D systems. This effect requires two ingredients: (i) spin-momentum locking, which maximizes time-reversal symmetry breaking in the non-linear regime, and (ii) random spin-orbit interaction -- the same mechanism behind Elliott - Yafet spin relaxation in heavy elements. Together, these generate a robust backscattering channel when a modest external magnetic field is applied. Our theory requires no gap opening or complex many-body effects, offering a simple and general mechanism that quantitatively explains recent observations in Bismuth hinge states.

Probing the topological protection of edge states in multilayer tungsten ditelluride with the superconducting proximity effect

The topology of WTe2, a transition metal dichalcogenide with large spin-orbit interactions, is thought to combine type II Weyl semimetal and second-order topological insulator (SOTI) character. The SOTI character should endow WTe2 multilayer crystals with topologically protected helical states at its hinges, and, indeed, 1D states have been detected thanks to Josephson interferometry. However, the immunity to backscattering conferred to those states by their helical nature has so far not been tested. To probe the topological protection of WTe2 edge states, we have fabricated Superconducting Quantum Interference Devices (SQUIDs) in which the supercurrent through a junction on the crystal edge interferes with the supercurrent through a junction in the bulk of the crystal. We find behaviors ranging from a Symmetric SQUID pattern to asymmetric SQUID patterns, including one in which the modulation by magnetic field reveals a sawtooth-like supercurrent versus phase relation for the edge junction, demonstrating that the supercurrent at the edge is carried by ballistic channels over 600 nm, a tell-tale sign of the SOTI character of WTe2.

Phase dependent Andreev spectrum in a difusive SNS junction. Static and dynamic current response

A long phase coherent normal (N) wire between superconductors (S) is characterized by a dense phase dependent Andreev spectrum. We investigate the current response of Andreev states of an NS ring to a time dependent Aharonov Bohm flux superimposed to a dc one. The ring is modeled with a tight binding Hamiltonian including a superconducting region with a BCS coupling between electron and hole states, in contact with a normal region with on site disorder. Both dc and ac currents are determined from the computed eigenstates and energies using a Kubo formula approach. Beside the well known Josephson current we identify different contributions to the ac response. A low frequency one related to the dynamics of the thermal occupations of the Andreev states and a higher frequency one related to microwave induced transitions between levels. Both are characterized by strongly anharmonic phase dependencies which are nearly opposite to one another. Our findings are successfully compared to the results of recent experiments.

Direct measurement of the phase coherence length in a GaAs/GaAlAs square network

The low temperature magnetoconductance of a large array of quantum coherentloops exhibits Altshuler-Aronov-Spivak oscillations which periodicitycorresponds to 1/2 flux quantum per loop.We show that the measurement of the harmonics content in a square networkprovides an accurate way to determine the electron phase coherence length$L\_ϕ$ in units of the lattice length without any adjustableparameters. We use this method to determine $L\_ϕ$ in a network realised from a 2Delectron gas (2DEG) in a GaAS/GaAlAs heterojunction. The temperaturedependence follows a power law $T^{-1/3}$ from 1.3 K to 25 mK with nosaturation, as expected for 1D diffusive electronic motion andelectron-electron scattering as the main decoherence mechanism.
