Near-field structures on a given scalar group

With this paper, we gain a better understanding of the set of near-field structures on a fixed scalar group. If we were able to describe all near-field structures on a fixed scalar group, we could describe all near-vector spaces. The near-field structures induced by isomorphisms of canonical near-vector spaces differ by quasi-multiplicative bijections while those induced by isomorphisms of near-fields differ by multiplicative bijections. This reveals one of the fundamental differences between linear algebra and near-linear algebra. We find an explicit description of all the elementary near-vector spaces. Significantly, we construct an addition $\boxplus$ on $\mathbb{Q}$ such that $(\mathbb{Q},\boxplus, \cdot)$ is isomorphic to $(\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-19}),+, \cdot)$. We also describe explicitly sufficient conditions for such an isomorphism to exist for more general extensions of $\mathbb{Q}$. Moreover, under extra conditions, we still describe those structures on $(\mathbb{R}, \cdot)$, and $(\mathbb{C}, \cdot)$.

Cubic function fields with prescribed ramification

This article describes cubic function fields $L/K$ with prescribed ramification, where $K$ is a rational function field. We give general equations for such extensions, an explicit procedure to obtain a defining equation when the purely cubic closure $K'/K$ of $L/K$ is of genus zero, and a description of the twists of $L/K$ up to isomorphism over $K$. For cubic function fields of genus at most one, we also describe the twists and isomorphism classes obtained when one allows Möbius transformations on $K$. The article concludes by studying the more general case of covers of elliptic and hyperelliptic curves that are ramified above exactly one point.

The geometry of the moduli Space of non-cyclic biquadratic field extensions

In this paper, we investigate the existence of an elementary abelian closure in characteristic not $2$ for biquadratic extensions. We discover that it exists for any non-cyclic extension. We make use of it to obtain a classification for this class of extensions up to isomorphism via descent. This permits us to describe the geometry of this moduli space in group theoretic terms. We also provide two families of polynomials with two parameters that can describe any quartic extensions.

Toward an intuitive understanding of the structure of near-vector spaces

In this paper, we analyze the definition André proposed for near-vector spaces to make it more transparent. We also study the class of near-vector spaces over division rings and give a characterization of regularity that gives a new insight into the decomposition of near-vector spaces into regular subspaces. We explicitly describe span and deduce a new characterization of subspaces.

Explicit genus formula for any separable cubic global function field

In the present work, we determine explicitly the genus of any separable cubic extension of any global function field given the minimal polynomial of the extension. We give algorithms computing the ramification data and the genus of any separable cubic extension of any global rational function field.

When are permutation invariants Cohen-Macaulay over all fields?

We prove that the polynomial invariants of a permutation group are Cohen-Macaulay for any choice of coefficient field if and only if the group is generated by transpositions, double transpositions, and 3-cycles. This unites and generalizes several previously known results. The "if" direction of the argument uses Stanley-Reisner theory and a recent result of Christian Lange in orbifold theory. The "only-if" direction uses a local-global result based on a theorem of Raynaud to reduce the problem to an analysis of inertia groups, and a combinatorial argument to identify inertia groups that obstruct Cohen-Macaulayness.

Cubic Fields: A Primer

We classify all cubic extensions of any field of arbitrary characteristic, up to isomorphism, via an explicit construction involving three fundamental types of cubic forms. We deduce a classification of any Galois cubic extension of a field. The splitting and ramification of places in a separable cubic extension of any global function field are completely determined, and precise Riemann-Hurwitz formulae are given. In doing so, we determine the decomposition of any cubic polynomial over a finite field.

A complete classification of cubic function fields over any finite field

We classify all cubic function fields over any finite field, particularly developing a complete Galois theory which includes those cases when the constant field is missing certain roots of unity. In doing so, we find criteria which allow one to easily read ramification and splitting data from the generating equation, in analogy to the known theory for Artin-Schreier and Kummer extensions. We also describe explicit irreducibility criteria, integral bases, and Galois actions in terms of canonical generating equations.

Existence of slices in a tame context

We study the ramification theory for actions involving group schemes, focusing on the tame ramification. We consider the notion of tame quotient stack introduced in [AOV] and the one of tame action introduced in [CEPT]. We establish a local Slice theorem for unramified actions and after proving some interesting lifting properties for linearly reductive group schemes, we establish a Slice theorem for actions by commutative group schemes inducing tame quotient stacks. Roughly speaking, we show that these actions are induced from an action of an extension of the inertia group on a finitely presented flat neighborhood. We finally consider the notion of tame action and determine how this notion is related to the one of tame quotient stack previously considered.
