Optimizing information transmission in neural induction constrains cell surface contacts of ascidian embryos

The onset of neural induction in the anterior ectoderm of ascidian embryos is regulated at the extracellular level by FGF signaling molecules, which control the acquisition of neural fate through the activation of the ERK pathway. Among the anterior ectoderm cells exposed to FGF, only a fraction will acquire neural fate. The selection of neural precursors depends on the quasi-invariant geometry of the embryo, which imposes upon each ectoderm cell a precise area of cell surface contact with underlying FGF-expressing (mesendoderm) cells. Here, we investigate information transmission between FGF and activated ERK and how this depends on the geometry of the system. Optimizing information transmission with the constraint that the total FGF-emitting surface area is restricted, as in the embryo, we find that the surface contacts with FGF that maximize information transmission are close to those observed experimentally. This information optimal solution is compatible with the anterior ectoderm cells having different areas of cell surface exposure to FGF, allowing the embryo to use cell surface areas as a regulatory mechanism for differentiating the outcome of cells that sense a constant FGF concentration.

On the robustness of the in vivo cyanobacterial circadian clock

We propose a revisited version of the in vivo model of the cyanobacterial circadian clock. Our aim is to address the lack of robustness predicted for the mutant cyanobacteria without transcriptional regulation of the original model. For this, we rely on an in vitro model of the clock describing explicitly the hexameric structure of the core protein of the clock. Our model is able to reproduce oscillatory behavior for the mutant, as observed experimentally, without finely tuned parameters.

Brownian motion in a growing population of ballistic particles

We investigate the motility of a growing population of cells in a idealized setting: we consider a system of hard disks in which new particles are added according to prescribed growth kinetics, thereby dynamically changing the number density. As a result, the expected Brownian motion of the hard disks is modified. We compute the density-dependent friction of the hard disks and insert it in an effective Langevin equation to describe the system, assuming that the inter-collision time is smaller than the timescale of the growth. We find that the effective Langevin description captures the changes in motility in agreement with the simulation results. Our framework can be extended to other systems in which the transport coefficient varies with time.

Baby de Sitter Black Holes and dS$_3$/CFT$_2$

Unlike three-dimensional Einstein gravity, three-dimensional massive gravity admits asymptotically de Sitter space (dS) black hole solutions. These black holes present interesting features and provide us with toy models to study the dS/CFT correspondence. A remarkable property of these black holes is that they are always in thermal equilibrium with the cosmological horizon of the space that hosts them. This invites us to study the thermodynamics of these solutions within the context of dS/CFT. We study the asymptotic symmetry group of the theory and find that it indeed coincides with the local two-dimensional conformal algebra. The charge algebra associated to the asymptotic Killing vectors consists of two copies of the Virasoro algebra with non-vanishing central extension. We compute the mass and angular momentum of the dS black holes and verify that a naive application of Cardy's formula exactly reproduces the entropy of both the black hole and the cosmological horizon. By adapting the holographic renormalization techniques to the case of dS space, we define the boundary stress tensor of the dual Euclidean conformal field theory.

Holography For a De Sitter-Esque Geometry

Warped dS$_3$ arises as a solution to topologically massive gravity (TMG) with positive cosmological constant $+1/\ell^2$ and Chern-Simons coefficient $1/μ$ in the region $μ^2 \ell^2 < 27$. It is given by a real line fibration over two-dimensional de Sitter space and is equivalent to the rotating Nariai geometry at fixed polar angle. We study the thermodynamic and asymptotic structure of a family of geometries with warped dS$_3$ asymptotics. Interestingly, these solutions have both a cosmological horizon and an internal one, and their entropy is unbounded from above unlike black holes in regular de Sitter space. The asymptotic symmetry group resides at future infinity and is given by a semi-direct product of a Virasoro algebra and a current algebra. The right moving central charge vanishes when $μ^2 \ell^2 = 27/5$. We discuss the possible holographic interpretation of these de Sitter-esque spacetimes.

A General Black String and its Microscopics

Using G2(2) dualities we construct the most general black string solution of minimal five-dimensional ungauged supergravity. The black string has five independent parameters, namely, the magnetic one-brane charge, smeared electric zero-brane charge, boost along the string direction, energy above the BPS bound, and rotation in the transverse space. In one extremal limit it reduces to the three parameter supersymmetric string of five-dimensional minimal supergravity; in another extremal limit it reduces to the three parameter non-supersymmetric extremal string of five-dimensional minimal supergravity. It also admits an extremal limit when it has maximal rotation in the four-dimensional transverse space. The decoupling limit of our general black string is a BTZ black hole times a two sphere. The macroscopic entropy of the string is reproduced by the Maldacena-Strominger-Witten CFT in appropriate ranges of the parameters. When the pressureless condition is imposed, our string describes the infinite radius limit of the most general class of black rings of minimal supergravity. We discuss implications our solution has for extremal and non-extremal black rings of minimal supergravity.

Non-Einstein geometries in Chiral Gravity

We analyze the asymptotic solutions of Chiral Gravity (Topologically Massive Gravity at μl = 1 with Brown-Henneaux boundary conditions) focusing on non-Einstein metrics. A class of such solutions admits curvature singularities in the interior which are reflected as singularities or infinite bulk energy of the corresponding linear solutions. A non-linear solution is found exactly. The back-reaction induces a repulsion of geodesics and a shielding of the singularity by an event horizon but also introduces closed timelike curves.

The Curious Case of Null Warped Space

We initiate a comprehensive study of a set of solutions of topologically massive gravity known as null warped anti-de Sitter spacetimes. These are pp-wave extensions of three-dimensional anti-de Sitter space. We first perform a careful analysis of the linearized stability of black holes in these spacetimes. We find two qualitatively different types of solutions to the linearized equations of motion: the first set has an exponential time dependence, the second - a polynomial time dependence. The solutions polynomial in time induce severe pathologies and moreover survive at the non-linear level. In order to make sense of these geometries, it is thus crucial to impose appropriate boundary conditions. We argue that there exists a consistent set of boundary conditions that allows us to reject the above pathological modes from the physical spectrum. The asymptotic symmetry group associated to these boundary conditions consists of a centrally-extended Virasoro algebra. Using this central charge we can account for the entropy of the black holes via Cardy's formula. Finally, we note that the black hole spectrum is chiral and prove a Birkoff theorem showing that there are no other stationary axisymmetric black holes with the specified asymptotics. We extend most of the analysis to a larger family of pp-wave black holes which are related to Schrödinger spacetimes with critical exponent z.

G2 Dualities in D=5 Supergravity and Black Strings

Five dimensional minimal supergravity dimensionally reduced on two commuting Killing directions gives rise to a G2 coset model. The symmetry group of the coset model can be used to generate new solutions by applying group transformations on a seed solution. We show that on a general solution the generators belonging to the Cartan and nilpotent subalgebras of G2 act as scaling and gauge transformations, respectively. The remaining generators of G2 form a sl(2,R)+sl(2,R) subalgebra that can be used to generate non-trivial charges. We use these generators to generalize the five dimensional Kerr string in a number of ways. In particular, we construct the spinning electric and spinning magnetic black strings of five dimensional minimal supergravity. We analyze physical properties of these black strings and study their thermodynamics. We also explore their relation to black rings.

Asymptotic symmetries of Schrödinger spacetimes

We discuss the asymptotic symmetry algebra of the Schrodinger-invariant metrics in d+3 dimensions and its realization on finite temperature solutions of gravity coupled to matter fields. These solutions have been proposed as gravity backgrounds dual to non-relativistic CFTs with critical exponent z in d space dimensions. It is known that the Schrodinger algebra possesses an infinite-dimensional extension, the Schrodinger-Virasoro algebra. However, we show that the asymptotic symmetry algebra of Schrodinger spacetimes is only isomorphic to the exact symmetry group of the background. It is possible to construct from first principles finite and integrable charges that infinite-dimensionally extend the Schrodinger algebra but these charges are not correctly represented via a Dirac bracket. We briefly comment on the extension of our analysis to spacetimes with Lifshitz symmetry.

Solitons in Five Dimensional Minimal Supergravity: Local Charge, Exotic Ergoregions, and Violations of the BPS Bound

We describe a number of striking features of a class of smooth solitons in gauged and ungauged minimal supergravity in five dimensions. The solitons are globally asymptotically flat or asymptotically AdS without any Kaluza-Klein directions but contain a minimal sphere formed when a cycle pinches off in the interior of the spacetime. The solutions carry a local magnetic charge and many have rather unusual ergosurfaces. Perhaps most strikingly, many of the solitons have more electric charge or, in the asymptotically AdS case, more electric charge and angular momentum than is allowed by the usual BPS bound. We comment on, but do not resolve, the new puzzle this raises for AdS/CFT.

Describing general cosmological singularities in Iwasawa variables

Belinskii, Khalatnikov, and Lifshitz (BKL) conjectured that the description of the asymptotic behavior of a generic solution of Einstein equations near a spacelike singularity could be drastically simplified by considering that the time derivatives of the metric asymptotically dominate (except at a sequence of instants, in the `chaotic case') over the spatial derivatives. We present a precise formulation of the BKL conjecture (in the chaotic case) that consists of basically three elements: (i) we parametrize the spatial metric $g_{ij}$ by means of \it{Iwasawa variables} $β^a, {\cal N}^a{}_i$); (ii) we define, at each spatial point, a (chaotic) \it{asymptotic evolution system} made of ordinary differential equations for the Iwasawa variables; and (iii) we characterize the exact Einstein solutions $β, {\cal{N}}$ whose asymptotic behavior is described by a solution $β_{[0]}, {\cal N}_{[0]}$ of the previous evolution system by means of a `\it{generalized Fuchsian system}' for the differenced variables $\bar β= β- β_{[0]}$, $\bar {\cal N} = {\cal N} - {\cal N}_{[0]}$, and by requiring that $\bar β$ and $\bar {\cal N}$ tend to zero on the singularity. We also show that, in spite of the apparently chaotic infinite succession of `Kasner epochs' near the singularity, there exists a well-defined \it{asymptotic geometrical structure} on the singularity : it is described by a \it{partially framed flag}. Our treatment encompasses Einstein-matter systems (comprising scalar and p-forms), and also shows how the use of Iwasawa variables can simplify the usual (`asymptotically velocity term dominated') description of non-chaotic systems.

Kac-Moody Algebras in M-theory

In this thesis, we consider several aspects of over-extended and very-extended Kac-Moody algebras in relation with theories of gravity coupled to matter. In the first part, we focus on the occurrence of KM algebras in the cosmological billiards. We analyse the billiards in the simplified situation of spatially homogeneous cosmologies. The most generic cases lead to the same algebras as those met in the general inhomogeneous case, but also sub-algebras of the "generic" ones appear. Next, we consider particular gravitational theories which, upon toroidal compactification to D=3 space-time dimensions, reduce to a theory of gravity coupled to a symmetric space non-linear sigma-model. We show that the billiard analysis gives direct information on possible dimensional oxidations (or on their obstructions) and field content of the oxidation endpoint. We also consider all hyperbolic Kac-Moody algebras and completely answer the question of whether or not a specific theory exists admitting a billiard characterised by the given hyperbolic algebra. In the second part, we turn to the set up of such gravity-matter theories through the building of an action explicitly invariant under a Kac-Moody group. As a first step to include fermions, we check the compatibility of the presence of a Dirac fermion with the (hidden duality) symmetries appearing in the toroidal compactification down to 3 space-time dimensions. Next, we investigate how the fermions (with spin 1/2 or 3/2) fit in the conjecture for hidden over-extended symmetry G++. Finally, in the context of G+++ invariant actions, we derive all the possible signatures for all the GB++ theories that can be obtained from the conventional one (1,D-1) by "dualities" generated by Weyl reflections. This generalizes the results obtained for E8++.

Hidden Symmetries and Dirac Fermions

In this paper, two things are done. First, we analyze the compatibility of Dirac fermions with the hidden duality symmetries which appear in the toroidal compactification of gravitational theories down to three spacetime dimensions. We show that the Pauli couplings to the p-forms can be adjusted, for all simple (split) groups, so that the fermions transform in a representation of the maximal compact subgroup of the duality group G in three dimensions. Second, we investigate how the Dirac fermions fit in the conjectured hidden overextended symmetry G++. We show compatibility with this symmetry up to the same level as in the pure bosonic case. We also investigate the BKL behaviour of the Einstein-Dirac-p-form systems and provide a group theoretical interpretation of the Belinskii-Khalatnikov result that the Dirac field removes chaos.

Dualities and signatures of G++ invariant theories

The G++ content of the formulation of gravity and M-theories as very-extended Kac-Moody invariant theories is further analysed. The different exotic phases of all the G_B++ theories, which admit exact solutions describing intersecting branes smeared in all directions but one, are derived. This is achieved by analysing for all G++ the signatures which are related to the conventional one (1,D-1) by `dualities' generated by the Weyl reflections.

Higher spin fields from indefinite Kac-Moody algebras

The emergence of higher spin fields in the Kac-Moody theoretic approach to M-theory is studied. This is based on work done by Schnakenburg, West and the second author. We then study the relation of higher spin fields in this approach to other results in different constructions of higher spin field dynamics. Of particular interest is the construction of space-time in the present set-up and we comment on the various existing proposals.

Cosmological billiards and oxidation

We show how the properties of the cosmological billiards provide useful information (spacetime dimension and $p$-form spectrum) on the oxidation endpoint of the oxidation sequence of gravitational theories. We compare this approach to the other available methods: $GL(n,R)$ subgroups and the superalgebras of dualities.

Einstein billiards and spatially homogeneous cosmological models

In this paper, we analyse the Einstein and Einstein-Maxwell billiards for all spatially homogeneous cosmological models corresponding to 3 and 4 dimensional real unimodular Lie algebras and provide the list of those models which are chaotic in the Belinskii, Khalatnikov and Lifschitz (BKL) limit. Through the billiard picture, we confirm that, in D=5 spacetime dimensions, chaos is present if off-diagonal metric elements are kept: the finite volume billiards can be identified with the fundamental Weyl chambers of hyperbolic Kac-Moody algebras. The most generic cases bring in the same algebras as in the inhomogeneous case, but other algebras appear through special initial conditions.
