Revisiting boundary electromagnetic duality and edge modes

We revisit electric and magnetic surface charges and edge modes in four-dimensional Maxwell theory and QED on a spacetime with a finite spatial boundary. Using the S-wall, which implements electromagnetic duality, we clarify the dual structure of surface charges. We show that, for the standard Neumann and Dirichlet boundary conditions, large gauge transformations and the corresponding shifts of edge modes are gauge redundancies rather than physical boundary symmetries. We also consider singular large gauge transformations and interpret them as insertions of Wilson or 't Hooft loops on the boundary. For modified boundary conditions, we show that large gauge transformations can become genuine physical boundary symmetries generated by topological surface operators, and that the corresponding edge modes can become physical. We further construct new boundary conditions that are electromagnetic duals of the modified boundary conditions.

Dyonic edge modes in Abelian gauge theory

We find new boundary conditions in four-dimensional Abelian gauge theory with general Chern--Simons boundary couplings. The boundary conditions allow dyonic edge modes and physical boundary symmetries. In particular, one of the new boundary conditions makes both electric and magnetic charges physical. We also study how our boundary conditions and charges transform under the $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb Z)$ duality.

Subregion Complementarity in AdS/CFT

We examine the bulk reconstruction in the AdS/CFT correspondence. We demonstrate that the subregion duality fails to hold, highlighting discrepancies between operators in causal wedge reconstruction and those in global reconstruction at the leading order in the large $N$ limit. We argue the invalidity of the entanglement wedge reconstruction based on the holographic quantum error correction code, attributing it to non-perturbative finite $N$ effects or quantum gravity effects due to the trans-Planckian modes near the horizon. Nevertheless, we propose the subregion complementarity, illustrating that different CFT operators can describe a bulk subregion. While we expect that this complementarity is valid outside the horizon in general eternal black holes, it is inapplicable for single-sided black holes where a semi-classical description at the stretched horizon is absent.

Bridging dS/CFT and Celestial Holography via Ward-Takahashi Identities

In 2507.17558, we provide a map from a scalar theory on $(D+2)$-dimensional Minkowski spacetime to a scalar theory with a continuous mass spectrum on $(D+1)$-dimensional de Sitter spacetime, and propose a link between celestial amplitudes and cosmological correlators (the cosmological-celestial dictionary). We extend the construction to fields with spin 1 and 2, and find that massless spin fields map to spin fields with continuous mass spectra. In this construction, we identify the de Sitter counterparts of the Nambu-Goldstone modes associated with the asymptotic symmetries in Minkowski spacetime. For $U(1)$ gauge theories, the counterpart is restricted to the massless sector within the continuous Proca spectrum, while for linearized gravity supertranslations are encoded in the partially massless sector and superrotations in the strictly massless sector. Using the identification, we reveal that the associated Ward-Takahashi identities of the cosmological correlators reproduce the conformally soft photon and graviton theorems via the cosmological-celestial dictionary. In particular, the celestial stress tensor is derived from the asymptotic limit of gravitons in de Sitter spacetime.

Celestial Holography meets dS/CFT

We provide a concrete link between celestial amplitudes and cosmological correlators. We first construct a map from quantum field theories (QFTs) in $(D+2)$-dimensional Euclidean space to theories on the $(D+1)$-dimensional sphere, through a Weyl rescaling and a Fourier transformation. An analytic continuation extends this map to a relation between QFTs in Minkowski spacetime $\text{M}_{D+2}$ and in de Sitter spacetime $\text{dS}_{D+1}$ with the Bunch-Davies vacuum. Combining this relation with celestial holography, we show that the extrapolated operators in de Sitter space can be represented by operators on the celestial sphere $S^{D}$. Our framework offers a systematic route to transfer computational techniques and physical insights between celestial holography and the dS/CFT correspondence.

Notes on Rindler wave packets in Minkowski spacetime

We consider wave packets of a massless scalar field that have well-localized Rindler energy, and examine how their energy appears to a Minkowski observer to study how the classical gravitational red-shift formula is modified quantum mechanically. We derive, by using the saddle point approximation, an analytic expression for the Minkowski momentum distribution of such Rindler wave packets. We find a universal lower bound on the uncertainty in the Minkowski momentum; the momentum distribution can never become arbitrarily sharp.

Bulk Reconstruction and Gauge Invariance

In this paper, we discuss the concept of bulk reconstruction, which involves mapping bulk operators into CFT operators to understand the emergence of spacetime and gravity. We argue that the $N=\infty$ approximation fails to capture crucial aspects of gravity, as it does not respect gauge invariance and lacks direct connections between energy and boundary metrics. Key concepts such as entanglement wedge reconstruction and holographic error correction codes, which are based on the $N=\infty$ theory, may be incorrect or require significant revision when finite $N$ effects are considered. We present explicit examples demonstrating discrepancies in bulk reconstructions and suggest that a gauge-invariant approach is necessary for an accurate understanding.

Heat and work in black hole thermodynamics via holography

We propose a formulation of black hole thermodynamics that incorporates the notions of heat and work, based on the thermodynamics in quantum theory and the AdS/CFT correspondence. First, for coupled holographic CFTs, we define a coarse-graining procedure adopting the principle of maximum entropy. Employing this approach, when the system is divided into a target system and thermal baths, we formulate the first and second laws, as well as the fundamental thermodynamic relation. Then, by translating the resulting thermodynamics into the AdS gravity language, we construct a thermodynamic framework for composite black hole systems that encompasses both heat and work. This formulation relies on holography, but not on energy conditions on the gravity side. We also argue that the second law serves as a necessary criterion for the UV completeness of gravitational theories.

Celestial two-point functions and rectified dictionary

A naive celestial dictionary causes massless two-point functions to take the delta-function forms in the celestial conformal field theory (CCFT). We rectify the dictionary, involving the shadow transformation so that the two-point functions follow the standard power-law. In this new definition, we can smoothly take the massless limit of the massive dictionary. We also compute a three-point function using the new dictionary and discuss the OPE in CCFT.

Dress code for infrared safe scattering in QED

We study the $S$-matrix and inclusive cross-section for general dressed states in quantum electrodynamics. We obtain an infrared factorization formula of the $S$-matrix elements for general dressed states. It enables us to study what dressed states lead to infrared-safe $S$-matrix elements. The condition for dressed states can be interpreted as the memory effect which is nothing but the conservation law of the asymptotic symmetry. We derive the generalized soft photon theorem for general dressed states. We also compute inclusive cross-section using general dressed states. It is necessary to use appropriate initial and final dressed states to evaluate interference effects, which cannot be computed correctly by using Fock states due to the infrared divergence.

Spectrum of quantum KdV hierarchy in the semiclassical limit

We employ semiclassical quantization to calculate spectrum of quantum KdV charges in the limit of large central charge $c$. Classically, KdV charges $Q_{2n-1}$ generate completely integrable dynamics on the co-adjoint orbit of the Virasoro algebra. They can be expressed in terms of action variables $I_k$, e.g.~as a power series expansion. Quantum-mechanically this series becomes the expansion in $1/c$, while action variables become integer-valued quantum numbers $n_i$. Crucially, classical expression, which is homogeneous in $I_k$, acquires quantum corrections that include terms of subleading powers in $n_k$. At first two non-trivial orders in $1/c$ expansion these ``quantum'' terms can be fixed from the analytic form of $Q_{2n-1}$ acting on the primary states. In this way we find explicit expression for the spectrum of $Q_{2n-1}$ up to first three orders in $1/c$ expansion. We apply this result to study thermal expectation values of $Q_{2n-1}$ and free energy of the KdV Generalized Gibbs Ensemble.

Rindler Bulk Reconstruction and Subregion Duality in AdS/CFT

In this paper, we study the AdS-Rindler reconstruction. The CFT operators naively given by the holographic dictionary for the AdS-Rindler reconstruction contain tachyonic modes, which are inconsistent with the causality and unitarity of the CFT. Therefore, the subregion duality and the entanglement wedge reconstruction do not hold. We also find that the tachyonic modes in the AdS-Rindler patch lead to arbitrary high-energy or trans-Planckian modes in the global AdS. It means that the mode expansion of the Rindler patch is sensitive to the UV limit of the theory, that is, quantum gravity. In addition, the tachyonic modes are related to the existence of null geodesics connecting the past and future horizons.

Target space entanglement in quantum mechanics of fermions at finite temperature

We consider the target space entanglement in quantum mechanics of non-interacting fermions at finite temperature. Unlike pure states investigated in arXiv:2105.13726, the (Rényi) entanglement entropy for thermal states does not follow a simple bound because all states in the infinite-dimensional Hilbert space are involved. We investigate a general formula of the target space Rényi entropy for $N$ fermions at finite temperature, and present numerical results of the entropy in a one-dimensional model. We also argue the large $N$ behaviors with a comparison to the grand canonical ensemble.

Target Space Entanglement in Quantum Mechanics of Fermions and Matrices

Quantum entanglement is closely related to the structure of spacetime in quantum gravity. For quantum field theories or statistical models, we usually consider base space entanglement. However, target space instead of base space sometimes directly connects to our spacetime. In these cases, it is natural to consider a concept of target space entanglement. To define the target space entanglement, we consider a generalized definition of entanglement entropy based on an algebraic approach. This approach is reviewed and is applied to the first quantized particles, in particular, fermions. This article is based on the paper JHEP 08 (2021) 046 [arXiv:2105.13726].

Target space entanglement in quantum mechanics of fermions and matrices

We consider entanglement of first-quantized identical particles by adopting an algebraic approach. In particular, we investigate fermions whose wave functions are given by the Slater determinants, as for singlet sectors of one-matrix models. We show that the upper bounds of the general Rényi entropies are $N \log 2$ for $N$ particles or an $N\times N$ matrix. We compute the target space entanglement entropy and the mutual information in a free one-matrix model. We confirm the area law: the single-interval entropy for the ground state scales as $\frac{1}{3}\log N$ in the large $N$ model. We obtain an analytical $\mathcal{O}(N^0)$ expression of the mutual information for two intervals in the large $N$ expansion.

IR finite S-matrix by gauge invariant dressed states

Dressed states were proposed to define the infrared (IR) finite $S$-matrix in QED or gravity. We show that the original Kulish-Faddeev dressed states are not enough to cure the IR divergences. To illustrate this problem, we consider QED with background currents (Wilson lines). This theory is exactly solvable but shares the same IR problems as the full QED. We show that naive asymptotic states lead to IR divergences in the $S$-matrix and are also inconsistent with the asymptotic symmetry, even if we add the original Kulish-Faddeev dressing operators. We then propose new dressed states which are consistent with the asymptotic symmetry. We show that the $S$-matrix for the dressed states is IR finite. We finally conclude that appropriate dressed asymptotic states define the IR finite $S$-matrix in the full QED.

KdV-charged black holes

We construct black hole geometries in AdS$_3$ with non-trivial values of KdV charges. The black holes are holographically dual to quantum KdV Generalized Gibbs Ensemble in 2d CFT. They satisfy thermodynamic identity and thus are saddle point configurations of the Euclidean gravity path integral. We discuss holographic calculation of the KdV generalized partition function and show that for a certain value of chemical potentials new geometries, not the conventional BTZ ones, are the leading saddles.
