Modeling and verifying a broad array of network properties

Motivated by widely observed examples in nature, society and software, where groups of already related nodes arrive together and attach to an existing network, we consider network growth via sequential attachment of linked node groups, or graphlets. We analyze the simplest case, attachment of the three node V-graphlet, where, with probability alpha, we attach a peripheral node of the graphlet, and with probability (1-alpha), we attach the central node. Our analytical results and simulations show that tuning alpha produces a wide range in degree distribution and degree assortativity, achieving assortativity values that capture a diverse set of many real-world systems. We introduce a fifteen-dimensional attribute vector derived from seven well-known network properties, which enables comprehensive comparison between any two networks. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) of this attribute vector space shows a significantly larger coverage potential of real-world network properties by a simple extension of the above model when compared against a classic model of network growth.

Network Growth with Feedback

Existing models of network growth typically have one or two parameters or strategies which are fixed for all times. We introduce a general framework where feedback on the current state of a network is used to dynamically alter the values of such parameters. A specific model is analyzed where limited resources are shared amongst arriving nodes, all vying to connect close to the root. We show that tunable feedback leads to growth of larger, more efficient networks. Exact results show that linear scaling of resources with system size yields crossover to a trivial condensed state, which can be considerably delayed with sublinear scaling.

Giant coherence in driven systems

We study the noise-induced currents and reliability or coherence of transport in two different classes of rocking ratchets. For this, we consider the motion of Brownian particles in the over damped limit in both adiabatic and non-adiabatic regimes subjected to unbiased temporally symmetric and asymmetric periodic driving force. In the case of a time symmetric driving, we find that even in the presence of a spatially symmetric simple sinusoidal potential, highly coherent transport occurs. These ratchet systems exhibit giant coherence of transport in the regime of parameter space where unidirectional currents in the deterministic case are observed. Outside this parameter range, i.e., when current vanishes in the deterministic regime, coherence in transport is very low. The transport coherence decreases as a function of temperature and is a non-monotonic function of the amplitude of driving. The transport becomes unreliable as we go from the adiabatic to the non-adiabatic domain of operation.

Motion of a random walker in a quenched power law correlated velocity field

We study the motion of a random walker in one longitudinal and d transverse dimensions with a quenched power law correlated velocity field in the longitudinal x-direction. The model is a modification of the Matheron-de Marsily (MdM) model, with long-range velocity correlation. For a velocity correlation function, dependent on transverse co-ordinates y as 1/(a+|{y_1 - y_2}|)^alpha, we analytically calculate the two-time correlation function of the x-coordinate. We find that the motion of the x-coordinate is a fractional Brownian motion (fBm), with a Hurst exponent H = max [1/2, (1- alpha/4), (1-d/4)]. From this and known properties of fBM, we calculate the disorder averaged persistence probability of x(t) up to time t. We also find the lines in the parameter space of d and alpha along which there is marginal behaviour. We present results of simulations which support our analytical calculation.

Is small-world network disordered?

Recent renormalization group results predict non self averaging behaviour at criticality for relevant disorder. However, we find strong self averaging(SA) behaviour in the critical region of a quenched Ising model on an ensemble of small-world networks, despite the relevance of the random bonds at the pure critical point.

Enhanced thermodynamic efficiency in time asymmetric ratchets

The energetic efficiency of an overdamped Brownian particle in a saw tooth potential in the presence of time asymmetric forcing is studied in the adiabatic limit. An error made in the earlier work on the same problem in literature is corrected. We find that asymmetry in potential together with temporal asymmetry in forcing leads to much enhanced efficiency without fine tuning of parameters. The origin of this is traced to the suppression of backward current. We also present a comparative study between the role of continuous and discontinuous ratchet forces on these measurable quantities. We find that the thermal fluctuations can optimize the energy transduction, the range of parameters, however, being very small. This ratchet model also displays current reversals on tuning of parameters even in the adiabatic regime. The possible relationships between nature of currents, entropy production and input energy are also addressed.
