Secret Key Rate Analysis of RIS-Assisted THz MIMO CV-QKD Systems under Access-Constrained Eavesdropping

A reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD) system operating at terahertz (THz) frequencies, in which a transmitter, Alice, encodes secret keys using Gaussian-modulated coherent states and communicates them to a legitimate receiver, Bob, is considered in this paper. The composite wireless channel, comprising the direct Alice-Bob link and the RIS-assisted reflected link, is modeled as a passive linear Gaussian quantum channel, enabling a unitary dilation that preserves the canonical commutation relations. The security of the considered system is investigated under collective Gaussian entangling attacks by introducing a practical access-constrained eavesdropping model, in which an eavesdropper, Eve, is assumed to access only the environmental modes associated with physically accessible propagation segments. A unified analytical framework is developed to derive the achievable secret key rate (SKR) across all single-segment, pairwise-segment, and full-segment access scenarios, assuming homodyne detection and reverse reconciliation at Bob. Furthermore, an optimization framework is developed to determine the optimal RIS phase configuration matrix and transmitter/receiver beam-splitter parameters that maximize the SKR performance. The resulting optimization problem is efficiently solved using particle swarm optimization. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the system's performance with respect to various free parameters. It is showcased that the secrecy performance strongly depends on Eve's accessible propagation segments, with the Alice-RIS channel constituting the most security-critical segment.

Outage Probability Analysis of MRC-Based Fluid Antenna Systems under Rician Fading

This paper investigates a fluid antenna system (FAS) where a single-antenna transmitter communicates with a receiver equipped with a fluid antenna (FA) over Rician fading channels. Two channel models are considered to incorporate the correlation among the ports into the fading gains, namely: i) the widely used physical reference port model, implemented by considering the first physical port as the reference port; and ii) the more accurate virtual reference port model, considering a common port correlation coefficient and implemented by assuming the presence of a virtual reference port. Assuming that multiple ports among the M available FA ports can be activated, the receiver selects the best K with the highest instantaneous signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and combines the received signals at the selected ports using maximum ratio combining. For both port models, the statistics of the post-combining SNRs are derived using a characteristic function approach, which allows to analyze the outage probabilities (OPs) of the FAS. Additional closed-form lower bounds on the OPs and the asymptotic OPs at high SNR are derived, revealing the diversity order of the FAS to be M. Numerical results validate the analytical framework and demonstrate the interplay of key system parameters on the performance of the considered MRC-based FAS. Specifically, the inaccuracy of the physical reference port model becomes increasingly evident as M, K, and the average SNR of the FAS increase.

Symbol Error Analysis for Fluid Antenna Systems with One- and Two-Dimensional Modulation Schemes

This paper considers a Fluid Antenna (FA) system comprising a single-antenna transmitter that communicates with a receiver equipped with an FA array with $N$ ports. The transmitter is assumed to deploy any of the modulation schemes: \textit{i}) two-sided $M$-ary amplitude-shift keying, \textit{ii}) $M$-ary phase-shift keying, iii) $M$-ary quadrature-amplitude modulation, and \textit{iv}) binary frequency-shift keying, the channels between its antenna and the receiver ports are subjected to Rayleigh fading, and the receiver chooses the best $K$ out of its $N$ ports for symbol detection. Considering that the receiver combines the signals from the best $K$ ports using maximal-ratio combining, the optimal reception structures for all the considered signaling schemes are obtained. We also present novel exact closed-form expressions for the respective symbol error probabilities (SEPs) of the FA system, as well as asymptotic approximations valid at high signal-to-noise ratios. The presented analysis is corroborated through comparisons with simulation results, showcasing the critical role of various system parameters on the SEP performance.

Multi-User Symbol Detection with XL Reception: Dynamic Metasurface Antennas with Low Resolution ADCs

Dynamic Metasurface Antennas (DMAs) have been recently proposed as a cost- and energy-efficient front-end solution for eXtremely Large (XL) antenna array systems, supporting scalable Analog and Digital (A/D) beamforming while using a reduced number of Radio-Frequency (RF) chains. This array architecture is commonly realized as partially connected hybrid A/D beamformers, in which non-overlapping subarrays are linked to separate RF chains, each attached to a waveguide hosting multiple metamaterials. In this work, we study uplink multi-user communications where each RF chain of an XL DMA receiver is equipped with a $b$-bit resolution Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC). We cast a Mean Squared Error (MSE) minimization problem for the design of the hybrid A/D combiner aimed at multi-user symbol detection, which is intrinsically non-convex due to the structural constraints imposed by the DMA hardware. By exploiting the Bussgang decomposition and a tractable modeling framework, we propose an efficient joint design of the hybrid A/D combining parameters. Our numerical evaluations showcase that XL DMA receivers can perform highly accurate multi-user symbol detection, revealing attractive trade-offs between hardware complexity and MSE performance.

Compact Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface with Phase-Gradient Coded Beam Steering and Controlled Substrate Loss

This paper presents a 1-bit reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) fabricated using a three-layer structure. It employs a manual layer stackup incorporating an optimal air gap to reduce the effective dielectric losses while using a low-cost FR4 substrate. The new design of the unit cells of the proposed RIS is outlined, with each unit cell featuring a PIN-diode-based, compact, simplified biasing network that simplifies the control circuit while maintaining distinct $\boldsymbol{0^\circ/180^\circ \pm 20^\circ}$ phase states between ON/OFF conditions. The designed RIS is in the form of a $\boldsymbol{10\times10}$ array with a compact size of $\boldsymbol{2.9λ_g \times 2.9λ_g}$. Additionally, a phase-gradient coding scheme is presented and utilized that achieves measured beam steering up to $\boldsymbol{\pm30^\circ}$ in both anechoic and noisy environments. Controlled and driven by an Arduino-cum-digital interface, the proposed RIS exhibits measured reflected wave gain enhancement of about 9\,dB over an incident wave angular range of $\boldsymbol{\pm 30^\circ}$. Furthermore, the design is also experimentally validated by transmitting quadrature phase-shift keying-modulated symbols via the RIS-assisted wireless channel. The proposed RIS works for the range 3.38--3.67\,GHz (8.3\%), and is suitable for deployment for the 5G n78 \mbox{band (3.5\,GHz).}

MIMO FSO Systems in Hybrid Quantum Noise Environments: SKR Analysis with One- and Two-way CV-QKD Protocols

This paper studies a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) free-space optical (FSO) communication system employing continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD), with the goal to support secret key transmission between two legitimate users, Alice and Bob. All involved wireless channels are subjected to atmospheric turbulence leading to beam spreading, pointing error, and turbulence-induced fading, which along with the presence of hybrid quantum noise negatively impact secret key exchange. Furthermore, the legitimate MIMO FSO system faces the threat of compromise from an eavesdropper, Eve, employing a collective Gaussian attack to intercept the secret key exchange. Novel one- and two-way protocols for enhancing the security of the transmitted keys are proposed. To this end, the transmissivity of the FSO channels is mathematically formulated and bounds on the mutual information between the transmitted and received coherent states are obtained, which are then used for deriving novel expressions for the secret key rates (SKRs) for both one- and two-way protocols. The presented numerical results corroborate the proposed analytical secrecy framework, quantifying the SKR gains obtained by employing MIMO and the two-way protocol for FSO CV-QKD systems.

Performance Analysis of One- and Two-way DV-QKD with MIMO FSO Communication Systems

This paper considers a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless system wherein two legitimate users attempt to exchange secret keys over free-space optical (FSO) channels. Novel frameworks for the use of the one- and two-way discrete-variable quantum key distribution (DV-QKD) protocols, employing weak coherent pulses and decoy states, are presented. Focusing on the case where a photon-number-splitting attack is adopted by the eavesdropper and the legitimate multi-antenna receiver using threshold detection for the key extraction, novel expressions for the secret key rate and quantum bit error rate for both one- and two-way protocols are derived. The performance gain with larger MIMO configurations and the tradeoff between the performances with the one- and the two-way protocols with respect to the transmission distance of the legitimate FSO link are numerically assessed.

RIS-Assisted Noncoherent Wireless System: Error Analysis with Optimal Receiver and Multi-level ASK

This paper considers a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) aided wireless communication system where the transmitter employs one-sided amplitude-shift keying (ASK) for data modulation and the receiver employs an optimal noncoherent maximum-likelihood rule for symbol detection. A novel statistical analysis is presented to approximate the weighted sum of a central and a non-central chi-squared random variable, which is used to derive a novel closed-form expression for the symbol error probability (SEP) of the noncoherent system. Furthermore, an optimization problem to minimize the system's SEP under transmission energy constraint is proposed, and novel algorithms are presented to obtain the optimal ASK constellation minimizing the SEP. Numerical results indicate that the noncoherent system achieves superior error performance and higher diversity order with the optimal ASK constellation compared to the traditional equispaced ASK constellation. Further, the optimal ASK significantly differs from the traditional one, with the difference becoming significant with an increase in the average signal-to-noise ratio and at a lower number of RIS's reflecting elements.

Optimal One- and Two-Sided Multi-Level ASK for Noncoherent SIMO Systems Over Correlated Rician Fading

This paper analyzes the performance of a single-input multiple-output (SIMO) wireless communication system employing one- and two-sided amplitude shift keying (ASK) modulation schemes for data transmission and operating under correlated Rician fading channels. The receiver deploys an optimal noncoherent maximum likelihood detector, which exploits statistical knowledge of the channel state information for signal decoding. An optimal receiver structure is derived, from which series-form and closed-form expressions for the union bound on the symbol error probability (SEP) are obtained for general and massive SIMO systems, respectively. Furthermore, an optimization framework to derive the optimal one- and two-sided ASK modulation schemes is proposed, which focuses on minimizing SEP performance under an average transmit energy constraint. The conducted numerical investigations for various system parameters demonstrate that the proposed noncoherent SIMO system with the designed optimal ASK modulation schemes achieves superior error performance compared to traditional equispaced ASK modulation. It is also shown that, when the proposed system employs traditional two-sided ASK modulation, superior error performance from the case of using one-sided ASK is obtained.

RIS-Assisted MIMO CV-QKD at THz Frequencies: Channel Estimation and SKR Analysis

In this paper, a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless system incorporating a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) to efficiently operate at terahertz (THz) frequencies is considered. The transmitter, Alice, employs continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD) to communicate secret keys to the receiver, Bob, which utilizes either homodyne or heterodyne detection. The latter node applies the least-squared approach to estimate the effective MIMO channel gain matrix prior to receiving the secret key, and this estimation is made available to Alice via an error-free feedback channel. An eavesdropper, Eve, is assumed to employ a collective Gaussian entanglement attack on the feedback channel to avail the estimated channel state information. We present a novel closed-form expression for the secret key rate (SKR) performance of the proposed RIS-assisted THz CV-QKD system. The effect of various system parameters, such as the number of RIS elements and their phase configurations, the channel estimation error, and the detector noise, on the SKR performance are studied via numerical evaluation of the derived formula. It is demonstrated that the RIS contributes to larger SKR for larger link distances, and that heterodyne detection is preferable over homodyne at lower pilot symbol powers.

Optimal Multi-Level ASK Modulations for RIS-Assisted Communications with Energy-Based Noncoherent Reception

This paper investigates the performance of one- and two-sided amplitude shift keying (ASK) modulations in noncoherent single-input single-output (SISO) wireless communication systems assisted by a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS). Novel noncoherent receiver structures are proposed based on the energy of the received symbol and the choice of the modulation scheme for data transmission. The system's performance is assessed in terms of the symbol error rate (SER) and an optimization framework is proposed to determine the most effective one- and two-sided ASKs to minimize the SER, while adhering to average a transmit power constraint. Two scenarios based on the availability of the statistical characteristics of the wireless channel are explored: a) the transceiver pair has complete knowledge of the channel statistics, and b) both end nodes possess knowledge of the statistics of the channel gain up to its fourth moment, and novel algorithms are developed to obtain optimal ASKs for both of them. Extensive numerical evaluations are presented showcasing that there exists a threshold signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) above which the optimal ASKs outperform the traditional equispaced ASKs. The dependencies of the SER performance and the SNR threshold on various system parameters are assessed, providing design guidelines for RIS-assisted noncoherent wireless communication systems with multi-level ASK modulations.

RIS-Assisted Space Shift Keying with Non-Ideal Transceivers and Greedy Detection

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) and index modulation (IM) represent key technologies for enabling reliable wireless communication with high energy efficiency. However, to fully take advantage of these technologies in practical deployments, comprehending the impact of the non-ideal nature of the underlying transceivers is paramount. In this context, this paper introduces two RIS-assisted IM communication models, in which the RIS is part of the transmitter and space-shift keying (SSK) is employed for IM, and assesses their performance in the presence of hardware impairments. In the first model, the RIS acts as a passive reflector only, reflecting the oncoming SSK modulated signal intelligently towards the desired receive diversity branch/antenna. The second model employs RIS as a transmitter, employing M-ary phase-shift keying for reflection phase modulation (RPM), and as a reflector for the incoming SSK modulated signal. Considering transmissions subjected to Nakagami-m fading, and a greedy detection rule at the receiver, the performance of both the system configurations is evaluated. Specifically, the pairwise probability of erroneous index detection and the probability of erroneous index detection are adopted as performance metrics, and their closed-form expressions are derived for the RIS-assisted SSK and RIS-assisted SSK-RPM system models. Monte-Carlo simulation studies are carried out to verify the analytical framework, and numerical results are presented to study the dependency of the error performance on the system parameters. The findings highlight the effect of hardware impairment on the performance of the communication system under study.

RIS-Assisted THz MIMO Wireless System in the Presence of Direct Link for CV-QKD with Limited Quantum Memory

A reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless communication system is considered in this paper wherein the transmitter, Alice modulates secret keys, by using a continuous variable quantum key distribution technique to be transmitted to the receiver, Bob, which employs homodyne detection for data decoding. The data is transmitted over two paths, namely a direct path between Alice and Bob and the wireless path between them via the RIS. Transmit and receive beamsplitters are employed in the system to transform the MIMO terahertz channels into parallel single-input single-output channels. Considering an eavesdropper, Eve, to attack all the three wireless channels in the system (i.e., the direct channel, the channel between Alice and RIS, and between the RIS and Bob) but having restricted quantum memory limiting it to store the ancilla modes from either of these three wireless channels, novel expressions for the secret key rate (SKR) of the system are derived. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the dependency of the system's performance on various system parameters. It is observed that the RIS plays a key role in increasing the SKR of the system and the transmission distance, ensuring secure communications between Alice and Bob. The significance of employing RIS is observed specifically for the case when Eve measures the ancilla modes of the channel between the RIS and Bob. Furthermore, for all such measurement scenarios, optimal angles are obtained for the phase shifts of the RIS elements to maximize the SKR for various MIMO configurations and transmission distance between Alice and Bob.

Optimal One- and Two-Sided Multi-level ASK Modulation or RIS-Assisted Noncoherent Communication Systems

In this paper, we analyze the performance of one- and two-sided amplitude shift keying (ASK) modulations in single-input single-output wireless communication aided by a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS). Two scenarios are considered for the channel conditions: a blocked direct channel between the transmitter and the receiver, and an unblocked one. For the receiver, a noncoherent maximum likelihood detector is proposed, which detects the transmitted data signal based on statistical knowledge of the channel. The system's performance is then evaluated by deriving the symbol error probability (SEP) for both scenarios using the proposed noncoherent receiver structures. We also present a novel optimization framework to obtain the optimal one- and two-sided ASK modulation schemes that minimize the SEP under constraints on the available average transmit power for both the blocked and unblocked direct channel scenarios. Our extensive numerical investigations showcase that the considered RIS-aided communication system achieves superior error performance with both derived SEP-optimal ASK modulation schemes as compared to respective traditional ASK modulation. It is also demonstrated that, between the two proposed modulation schemes, the two-sided one yields the best SEP. The error performance is further analyzed for different system parameters, providing a comprehensive performance investigation of RIS-assisted noncoherent wireless communication systems.

Synergizing Airborne Non-Terrestrial Networks and Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces-Aided 6G IoT

On the one hand, Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RISs) emerge as a promising solution to meet the demand for higher data rates, improved coverage, and efficient spectrum utilization. On the other hand, Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTNs) offer unprecedented possibilities for global connectivity. Moreover, the NTN can also support the upsurge in the number of Internet of Things (IoT) devices by providing reliable and ubiquitous connectivity. Although NTNs have shown promising results, there are several challenges associated with their usage, such as signal propagation delays, interference, security, etc. In this article, we have discussed the possibilities of integrating RIS with an NTN platform to overcome the issues associated with NTN. Furthermore, through experimental validation, we have demonstrated that the RIS-assisted NTN can play a pivotal role in improving the performance of the entire communication system.

RIS-Assisted 6G Wireless Communications: A Novel Statistical Framework in the Presence of Direct Channel

A RIS-assisted wireless communication system in the presence of a direct communication path between the transceiver pair is considered in this paper. The transmitter-RIS and the RIS-receiver channels follow independent Nakagami-m distributions, and the direct channel between the transceiver pair follows a Rayleigh distribution. Considering this system model, the statistics of the composite channel for the RIS-assisted communication system are derived in terms of obtaining novel expressions for the probability density functions for the magnitude and the phase of the communication channel. The correctness of the analytical framework is verified via Monte Carlo simulations, and the effects of the shape parameters of the channels and the number of reflecting elements in the RIS on the randomness of the composite channel are studied via numerical results.

RIS-Aided Index Modulation with Greedy Detection over Rician Fading Channels

Index modulation schemes for reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS)-assisted systems are envisioned as promising technologies for fifth-generation-advanced and sixth-generation (6G) wireless communication systems to enhance various system capabilities such as coverage area and network capacity. In this paper, we consider a receive diversity RIS-assisted wireless communication system employing IM schemes, namely, space-shift keying (SSK) for binary modulation and spatial modulation (SM) for M-ary modulation for data transmission. The RIS lies in close proximity to the transmitter, and the transmitted data is subjected to a fading environment with a prominent line-of-sight component modeled by a Rician distribution. A receiver structure based on a greedy detection rule is employed to select the receive diversity branch with the highest received signal energy for demodulation. The performance of the considered system is evaluated by obtaining a series-form expression for the probability of erroneous index detection (PED) of the considered target antenna using a characteristic function approach. In addition, closed-form and asymptotic expressions at high and low signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) for the bit error rate (BER) for the SSK-based system, and the SM-based system employing M-ary phase-shift keying and M-ary quadrature amplitude modulation schemes, are derived. The dependencies of the system performance on the various parameters are corroborated via numerical results. The asymptotic expressions and results of PED and BER at high and low SNR values lead to the observation of a performance saturation and the presence of an SNR value as a point of inflection, which is attributed to the greedy detector's structure.

Channel Estimation and Secret Key Rate Analysis of MIMO Terahertz Quantum Key Distribution

We study the secret key rate (SKR) of a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) continuous variable quantum key distribution (CVQKD) system operating at terahertz (THz) frequencies, accounting for the effects of channel estimation. We propose a practical channel estimation scheme for the THz MIMO CVQKD system which is necessary to realize transmit-receive beamforming between Alice and Bob. We characterize the input-output relation between Alice and Bob during the key generation phase, by incorporating the effects of additional noise terms arising due to the channel estimation error and detector noise. Furthermore, we analyze the SKR of the system and study the effect of channel estimation error and overhead. Our simulation results reveal that the SKR may degrade significantly as compared to the SKR upper bound that assumes perfect channel state information, particularly at large transmission distances.
