Day-ahead Forecasts of Air Temperature

Air temperature is an essential factor that directly impacts the weather. Temperature can be counted as an important sign of climatic change, that profoundly impacts our health, development, and urban planning. Therefore, it is vital to design a framework that can accurately predict the temperature values for considerable lead times. In this paper, we propose a technique based on exponential smoothing method to accurately predict temperature using historical values. Our proposed method shows good performance in capturing the seasonal variability of temperature. We report a root mean square error of $4.62$ K for a lead time of $3$ days, using daily averages of air temperature data. Our case study is based on weather stations located in the city of Alpena, Michigan, United States.

Monitoring Atmospheric Pollutants From Ground-based Observations

Remote sensing analysts continuously monitor the amount of pollutants in the atmosphere. They are usually performed via satellite images. However, these images suffer from low temporal and low spatial resolution. Therefore, observations recorded from the ground offer us a fantastic alternative. There are low-cost sensors that continuously record the PM$_{2.5}$ and PM$_{10}$ concentration levels in the atmosphere. In this position paper, we provide an overview of the state-of-the-art techniques for pollutant forecasting. We establish the interdependence of meteorological parameters on atmospheric pollutants. Our case study in this paper is based on the island of Australia.

Embedding Cyclical Information in Solar Irradiance Forecasting

In this paper, we demonstrate the importance of embedding temporal information for an accurate prediction of solar irradiance. We have used two sets of models for forecasting solar irradiance. The first one uses only time series data of solar irradiance for predicting future values. The second one uses the historical solar irradiance values, together with the corresponding timestamps. We employ data from the weather station located at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) Singapore. The solar irradiance values are recorded with a temporal resolution of $1$ minute, for a period of $1$ year. We use Multilayer Perceptron Regression (MLP) technique for forecasting solar irradiance. We obtained significant better prediction accuracy when the time stamp information is embedded in the forecasting framework, as compared to solely using historical solar irradiance values.

Detecting Blurred Ground-based Sky/Cloud Images

Ground-based whole sky imagers (WSIs) are being used by researchers in various fields to study the atmospheric events. These ground-based sky cameras capture visible-light images of the sky at regular intervals of time. Owing to the atmospheric interference and camera sensor noise, the captured images often exhibit noise and blur. This may pose a problem in subsequent image processing stages. Therefore, it is important to accurately identify the blurred images. This is a difficult task, as clouds have varying shapes, textures, and soft edges whereas the sky acts as a homogeneous and uniform background. In this paper, we propose an efficient framework that can identify the blurred sky/cloud images. Using a static external marker, our proposed methodology has a detection accuracy of 94\%. To the best of our knowledge, our approach is the first of its kind in the automatic identification of blurred images for ground-based sky/cloud images.

An Interoperable Open Data Portal for Climate Analysis

This work proposes an open interoperable data portal that offers access to a Web-wide climate domain knowledge graph created for Ireland and England's NOAA climate daily data. There are three main components contributing to this data portal: the first is the upper layer schema of the knowledge graph -- the climate analysis (CA) ontology -- the second is an ad hoc SPARQL server by which to store the graph data and provide public Web access, the last is a dereferencing engine deployed to resolve URIs for entity information. Our knowledge graph form of NOAA climate data facilitates the supply of semantic climate information to researchers and offers a variety of semantic applications that can be built on top of it.

Identifying Stroke Indicators Using Rough Sets

Stroke is widely considered as the second most common cause of mortality. The adverse consequences of stroke have led to global interest and work for improving the management and diagnosis of stroke. Various techniques for data mining have been used globally for accurate prediction of occurrence of stroke based on the risk factors that are associated with the electronic health care records (EHRs) of the patients. In particular, EHRs routinely contain several thousands of features and most of them are redundant and irrelevant that need to be discarded to enhance the prediction accuracy. The choice of feature-selection methods can help in improving the prediction accuracy of the model and efficient data management of the archived input features. In this paper, we systematically analyze the various features in EHR records for the detection of stroke. We propose a novel rough-set based technique for ranking the importance of the various EHR records in detecting stroke. Unlike the conventional rough-set techniques, our proposed technique can be applied on any dataset that comprises binary feature sets. We evaluated our proposed method in a publicly available dataset of EHR, and concluded that age, average glucose level, heart disease, and hypertension were the most essential attributes for detecting stroke in patients. Furthermore, we benchmarked the proposed technique with other popular feature-selection techniques. We obtained the best performance in ranking the importance of individual features in detecting stroke.

Analysis of French Phonetic Idiosyncrasies for Accent Recognition

Speech recognition systems have made tremendous progress since the last few decades. They have developed significantly in identifying the speech of the speaker. However, there is a scope of improvement in speech recognition systems in identifying the nuances and accents of a speaker. It is known that any specific natural language may possess at least one accent. Despite the identical word phonemic composition, if it is pronounced in different accents, we will have sound waves, which are different from each other. Differences in pronunciation, in accent and intonation of speech in general, create one of the most common problems of speech recognition. If there are a lot of accents in language we should create the acoustic model for each separately. We carry out a systematic analysis of the problem in the accurate classification of accents. We use traditional machine learning techniques and convolutional neural networks, and show that the classical techniques are not sufficiently efficient to solve this problem. Using spectrograms of speech signals, we propose a multi-class classification framework for accent recognition. In this paper, we focus our attention on the French accent. We also identify its limitation by understanding the impact of French idiosyncrasies on its spectrograms.

Graph-based Local Climate Classification in Iran

In this paper, we introduce a novel graph-based method to classify the regions with similar climate in a local area. We refer our proposed method as Graph Partition Based Method (GPBM). Our proposed method attempts to overcome the shortcomings of the current state-of-the-art methods in the literature. It has no limit on the number of variables that can be used and also preserves the nature of climate data. To illustrate the capability of our proposed algorithm, we benchmark its performance with other state-of-the-art climate classification techniques. The climate data is collected from 24 synoptic stations in Fars province in southern Iran. The data includes seven climate variables stored as time series from 1951 to 2017. Our results exhibit that our proposed method performs a more realistic climate classification with less computational time. It can save more information during the climate classification process and is therefore efficient in further data analysis. Furthermore, using our method, we can introduce seasonal graphs to better investigate seasonal climate changes. To the best of our knowledge, our proposed method is the first graph-based climate classification system.

Impact of Load Demand Dataset Characteristics on Clustering Validation Indices

With the inclusion of smart meters, electricity load consumption data can be fetched for individual consumer buildings at high temporal resolutions. Availability of such data has made it possible to study daily load demand profiles of the households. Clustering households based on their demand profiles is one of the primary, yet a key component of such analysis. While many clustering algorithms/frameworks can be deployed to perform clustering, they usually generate very different clusters. In order to identify the best clustering results, various cluster validation indices (CVIs) have been proposed in the literature. However, it has been noticed that different CVIs often recommend different algorithms. This leads to the problem of identifying the most suitable CVI for a given dataset. Responding to the problem, this paper shows how the recommendations of validation indices are influenced by different data characteristics that might be present in a typical residential load demand dataset. Furthermore, the paper identifies the features of data that prefer/prohibit the use of a particular cluster validation index.

Ontology Modeling for Decentralized Household Energy Systems

In a decentralized household energy system consisting of various devices such as washing machines, heat pumps, and solar panels, understanding the electric energy consumption and production data at the granularity of the device helps end-users be closer to the system and further achieve the sustainability of energy use. However, many datasets in this area are isolated from other domains with records of only energy-related data. This may raise a loss of information (e.g. weather) that is relevant to the energy use of each device. A noticeable disadvantage is that many of those datasets have to be used in computational modeling approaches such as machine learning models, which are vulnerable to the data feed, to advance the understanding of energy consumption and production. Although such computational methods have achieved a high benchmark merely through a local view of datasets, the reusability cannot be firmly guaranteed when the information omission is taken into account. This paper addresses the data isolation problem in the smart energy systems area by exploring Semantic Web techniques on top of a household energy system. We propose an ontology modeling solution for the management of decentralized data at the resolution of a device in the system. As a result, the scope of the data concerning each device can be easily extended to be wider across the web and more information that may be of interest such as weather can be retrieved from the Web if the data are structured by the ontology.

Using GANs to Augment Data for Cloud Image Segmentation Task

While cloud/sky image segmentation has extensive real-world applications, a large amount of labelled data is needed to train a highly accurate models to perform the task. Scarcity of such volumes of cloud/sky images with corresponding ground-truth binary maps makes it highly difficult to train such complex image segmentation models. In this paper, we demonstrate the effectiveness of using Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) to generate data to augment the training set in order to increase the prediction accuracy of image segmentation model. We further present a way to estimate ground-truth binary maps for the GAN-generated images to facilitate their effective use as augmented images. Finally, we validate our work with different statistical techniques.

An Extremely-low Cost Ground-Based Whole Sky Imager

Ground-based Whole Sky Imagers (WSIs) are increasingly being used for various remote sensing applications. While the fundamental requirements of a WSI are to make it climate-proof with an ability to capture high resolution images, cost also plays a significant role for wider scale adoption. This paper proposes an extremely low-cost alternative to the existing WSIs. In the designed model, high resolution images are captured with auto adjusting shutter speeds based on the surrounding light intensity. Furthermore, a manual data backup option using a portable memory drive is implemented for remote locations with no internet access.

An Ontology Model for Climatic Data Analysis

Recently ontologies have been exploited in a wide range of research areas for data modeling and data management. They greatly assists in defining the semantic model of the underlying data combined with domain knowledge. In this paper, we propose the Climate Analysis (CA) Ontology to model climate datasets used by remote sensing analysts. We use the data published by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to further explore how ontology modeling can be used to facilitate the field of climatic data processing. The idea of this work is to convert relational climate data to the Resource Description Framework (RDF) data model, so that it can be stored in a graph database and easily accessed through the Web as Linked Data. Typically, this provides climate researchers, who are interested in datasets such as NOAA, with the potential of enriching and interlinking with other databases. As a result, our approach facilitates data integration and analysis of diverse climatic data sources and allows researchers to interrogate these sources directly on the Web using the standard SPARQL query language.

Impact of COVID19-induced Lockdown on Air Quality in Ireland

Air pollution has been a long-existing problem for most of the major metropolitan cities of the world. Several measures including strict climate laws and reduction in the number of vehicles were implemented by several nations. However, in the recent wake of the COVID19 pandemic, there has been a renewed interest in revisiting the problem of low air quality. Several countries implemented strict lockdown measures halting the vehicular traffic and other economic activities, in order to reduce the spread of COVID19. In this paper, we analyze the impact of such COVID19-induced lockdown on the air quality of the atmosphere. Our case study is based in the city of Dublin, Ireland. We analyze the average concentration of common gaseous pollutant majorly responsible for industrial and vehicular pollution, \textit{viz.} nitrogen dioxide (NO$_2$). These concentrations are obtained from the tropospheric column of the atmosphere collected by Sentinel-5P, which is an earth observation satellite of European Space Agency. We observe that Dublin had a significant drop in the level of NO$_2$ concentration, owing to the strict lockdown measures implemented across the nation.

Stereo Matching Based on Visual Sensitive Information

The area of computer vision is one of the most discussed topics amongst many scholars, and stereo matching is its most important sub fields. After the parallax map is transformed into a depth map, it can be applied to many intelligent fields. In this paper, a stereo matching algorithm based on visual sensitive information is proposed by using standard images from Middlebury dataset. Aiming at the limitation of traditional stereo matching algorithms regarding the cost window, a cost aggregation algorithm based on the dynamic window is proposed, and the disparity image is optimized by using left and right consistency detection to further reduce the error matching rate. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can effectively enhance the stereo matching effect of the image providing significant improvement in accuracy as compared with the classical census algorithm. The proposed model code, dataset, and experimental results are available at https://github.com/WangHewei16/Stereo-Matching.

3D Displays: Their Evolution, Inherent Challenges & Future Perspectives

The popularity of 3D displays has risen drastically over the past few decades but these displays are still merely a novelty compared to their true potential. The development has mostly focused on Head Mounted Displays (HMD) development for Virtual Reality and in general ignored non-HMD 3D displays. This is due to the inherent difficulty in the creation of these displays and their impracticability in general use due to cost, performance, and lack of meaningful use cases. In fairness to the hardware manufacturers who have made striking innovations in this field, there has been a dereliction of duty of software developers and researchers in terms of developing software to best utilize these displays. This paper will seek to identify what areas of future software development could mitigate this dereliction. To achieve this goal, the paper will first examine the current state of the art and perform a comparative analysis on different types of 3D displays, from this analysis a clear researcher gap exists in terms of software development for Light field displays which are the current state of the art of non-HMD-based 3D displays. The paper will then outline six distinct areas where the context-awareness concept will allow for non-HMD-based 3D displays in particular light field displays that can not only compete but surpass their HMD-based brethren for many specific use cases.

A Clustering Framework for Residential Electric Demand Profiles

The availability of residential electric demand profiles data, enabled by the large-scale deployment of smart metering infrastructure, has made it possible to perform more accurate analysis of electricity consumption patterns. This paper analyses the electric demand profiles of individual households located in the city Amsterdam, the Netherlands. A comprehensive clustering framework is defined to classify households based on their electricity consumption pattern. This framework consists of two main steps, namely a dimensionality reduction step of input electricity consumption data, followed by an unsupervised clustering algorithm of the reduced subspace. While any algorithm, which has been used in the literature for the aforementioned clustering task, can be used for the corresponding step, the more important question is to deduce which particular combination of algorithms is the best for a given dataset and a clustering task. This question is addressed in this paper by proposing a novel objective validation strategy, whose recommendations are then cross-verified by performing subjective validation.

Validating Clustering Frameworks for Electric Load Demand Profiles

Large-scale deployment of smart meters has made it possible to collect sufficient and high-resolution data of residential electric demand profiles. Clustering analysis of these profiles is important to further analyze and comment on electricity consumption patterns. Although many clustering techniques have been proposed in the literature over the years, it is often noticed that different techniques fit best for different datasets. To identify the most suitable technique, standard clustering validity indices are often used. These indices focus primarily on the intrinsic characteristics of the clustering results. Moreover, different indices often give conflicting recommendations which can only be clarified with heuristics about the dataset and/or the expected cluster structures -- information that is rarely available in practical situations. This paper presents a novel scheme to validate and compare the clustering results objectively. Additionally, the proposed scheme considers all the steps prior to the clustering algorithm, including the pre-processing and dimensionality reduction steps, in order to provide recommendations over the complete framework. Accordingly, the proposed strategy is shown to provide better, unbiased, and uniform recommendations as compared to the standard Clustering Validity Indices.
