Favorable half-Heusler structure of synthesized TiCoSb alloy: a theoretical and experimental study

The most favorable structure of the synthesized TiCoSb half-Heusler alloy is explored theoretically and experimentally, and the best structure for thermoelectric conversion is reported. Rietveld refinement of the X-ray diffraction data employing four probable structures of the HH alloy is performed to obtain the best fit and identify the crystallized structure. However, microstructural characterization is performed using the energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy to reveal the stoichiometry and Bragg reflection planes of the synthesized polycrystalline lattice structure of TiCoSb HH alloy. Theoretical investigation is performed by implementing the first principle calculation using the Full Potential Linearized Augmented Plane Wave method in the Quantum Espresso software package. The most probable structure is explored by estimating the minimum energy at equilibrium volume and electronic structure of the TiCoSb half-Heusler alloy of the four probable structures considered. The theoretical and experimental data are corroborated, and the most probable structure is identified for the crystallized TiCoSb HH alloy. The thermoelectric properties of the most probable structure are estimated.

Effect of co-existing crystal structures on magnetic properties of Ni_2Mn_(1+x)Sn_(1-x) magnetic shape memory alloy

The temperature dependent crystal structure analysis in martensitic phase of Ni_2Mn_(1+x)Sn_(1-x) (x = 0.40 and 0.44) magnetic shape memory alloy is performed using X-ray diffraction. The martensitic phase consists of 4-Layered and 14-Layered orthorhombic structure. The phase fraction of 4-layered and 14-layered orthorhombic structure change with temperature. Interestingly, the magnetic property also changes with temperature and corresponds to structural change temperature. Thus, the exchange coupling constant between original Mn and substituted Mn is calculated, which shows that the 4-layered and 14-layered orthorhombic structures have different strength of antiferromagnetic coupling. The analysis explain the origin of spin glass behavior and unusual exchange bias effect in these systems under zero-field-cooling.

Driving force for martensitic transformation in Ni$_{2}$Mn$_{1+x}$Sn$_{1-x}$

The martensitic transformation in Ni$_{2}$Mn$_{1+x}$Sn$_{1-x}$ alloys has been investigated within ab-initio density functional theory. The experimental trend of a martensitic transition happening beyond $x$ = 0.36 is captured within these calculations. The microscopic considerations leading to this are traced to increased Ni-Mn hybridization which results from the Ni atom experiencing a resultant force along a lattice parameter and moving towards the Mn atoms above a critical concentration. The presence of the lone pair electrons on Sn forces the movement of Ni atoms away from Sn. While band Jahn Teller effects have been associated with this transition, we show quantitatively that atleast in this class of compounds they have a minor role.

Structural and electronic properties of superconducting Heusler alloy Ni$_{2}$Nb$_{1+x}$Sn$_{1-x}$: \textit{Ab initio} approach

Using \textit{ab initio} calculation, we investigate systematically the structural and electronic properties of Ni$_{2}$Nb$_{1+x}$Sn$_{1-x}$ ($x$ = 0, 0.25, 0.50). Here, projector augmented wave approach (PAW) implemented in the Vienna \textit{ab initio} simulation package (VASP) within generalized gradient approximation (GGA) for the exchange-correlation functional has been used. In this article, it is reported that though Ni$_{2}$NbSn and Ni$_{2}$Nb$_{1.25}$Sn$_{0.75}$ have no structural transformation, Ni$_{2}$Nb$_{1.5}$Sn$_{0.5}$ can transform to tetragonal structure from cubic L2$_{1}$ phase. The cubic lattice parameter decreases with Nb doping at Sn sites in off-stoichiometric alloys. The alloys are in paramagnetic phase in all the structures. The hybridization between Ni and Nb 3d states triggers the tetragonal distortion. Due to Nb doping in cubic L2$_{1}$ phase, there is a significant change in total density of states (DOSs) at Fermi energy (E$_{F}$) (N(E$_{F}$)). N(E$_{F}$) increases with increasing Nb doping. But, N(E$_{F}$) decreases during structural transformation of Ni$_{2}$Nb$_{1.5}$Sn$_{0.5}$. The superconducting critical temperature (T$_{C}$) also changes with Nb doping in cubic phase and tetragonal distortion because T$_{C}$ very much depends on N(E$_{F}$).
