No-Go Theorem for Norm-Based Nonclassicality Certification with Linear Functionals

Despite various approaches to encode nonclassical light, most existing formulations either suffer from limited practicality or rely on optimization procedures that are computationally demanding. Here, we develop a framework for quantifying optical nonclassicality without invoking any optimization, using generic classicalization channels, p-norms and linear functionals generated by displaced rotationally-invariant operators. However, for a subset of such measures, involving s-ordered distributions and a Gaussian classicalization channel, we analytically establish a no-go theorem demonstrating that no such universal measure can exist. We further substantiate our theoretical result through explicit examples involving both Gaussian and non-Gaussian states, followed by a generic criterion for a no-go theorem, whose the existence remains to be established.

Loophole-free Bell-inequality violation between atomic states in cavity-QED systems mediated by hybrid atom-light entanglement

We present a feasible and scalable approach to testing Bell nonlocality and implementing device-independent quantum key distribution (DI-QKD) between distant atomic states in cavity-based architectures, mediated by hybrid atom-light entanglement. We develop a full theoretical model that incorporates realistic sources of noise -- such as transmission loss, limited light-matter coupling efficiency, and imperfect detection. Our analysis shows that strong Bell-Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt (CHSH) violations and secure key generation over tens of kilometers are within reach using current or near-term technology. These results position cavity-based platforms with coherent-state encodings as a promising foundation for future scalable, DI quantum communication networks.

Sharing quantum nonlocality and teleportation over long distance using optical hybrid states

We analyze sharing Bell-type nonlocal correlation between two distant parties with optical hybrid states comprising a single photon polarization state and a multiphoton coherent state. By deploying entanglement swapping over the coherent state parts at the middle station, we show that the optical hybrid states can efficiently generate a polarization-entangled state that violates Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt (CHSH) Bell-inequality well over a metropolitan distance. We further assess the quality of the shared entangled state in the information processing task of quantum teleportation of an unknown polarization qubit. Our results with realistic devices, embedding detection inefficiency and transmission losses, indicate the viability of faithful quantum teleportation over large distances, consistent with the quality of the shared correlation.

Deterministic generation of hybrid entangled states using quantum walks

In recent times, hybrid-entanglement (HE) between a qubit and a coherent state has demonstrated superior performance in various quantum information processing tasks, particularly in quantum key distribution. Despite its theoretical advantages, efficient generation of such states in the laboratory has been a challenge. Here, we introduce a deterministic and efficient approach for generating HE states using quantum walks. Our method achieves a remarkable fidelity of $99.9\%$ with just $20$ time steps in a one-dimensional split-step quantum walk. This represents a significant improvement over prior approaches for probabilistic generation of HE states with fidelity as low as $80\%$. Our scheme not only provides a robust solution to the generation of HE states but also highlights a unique advantage of quantum walks, thereby contributing to the advancement of this burgeoning field. Moreover, our scheme is experimentally feasible with the current technology.

Long-distance entanglement sharing using hybrid states of discrete and continuous variables

We introduce a feasible scheme to produce high-rate long-distance entanglement which uses hybrid entanglement (HE) between continuous variables (CV) and discrete variables (DV). We show that HE can effectively remove the experimental limitations of existing CV and DV systems to produce long range entanglement. We benchmark the resulting DV entangled states using an entanglement-based quantum key distribution (EB-QKD) protocol. We show that, using HE states, EB-QKD is possible with standard telecommunication fibers for 300 km. The key idea is using the CV part, which can be adjusted to be robust against photon losses, for increasing the transmission distance, while using the DV part for achieving high secure key rates. Our results point out that HE states provide a clear advantage for practical long-distance and high-rate entanglement generation that may lead to further applications in quantum information processing.

Multimode non-Gaussian secure communication under mode-mismatch

In this paper, we analyse the role of non-Gaussianity in continuous-variable (CV) quantum key distribution (QKD) with multimode light under mode-mismatch. We consider entanglement-based protocol with non-Gaussian resources generated by single-photon-subtraction and zero-photon-catalysis on a two-mode squeezed vacuum state (TMSV). Our results indicate that, compared to the case of TMSV, these non-Gaussian resources reasonably enhances the performance of CV-QKD, even under the effect of noise arising due to mode-mismatch. To be specific, while in the case of TMSV the maximum transmission distance is limited to 47 Km, single-photon subtracted TMSV and zero-photon-catalysed TMSV yield much higher distance of 73 Km and 152 Km respectively. However, photon loss as a practical concern in zero-photon-catalysis setup limits the transmission distance for zero-photon-catalysed TMSV to 36 Km. This makes single-photon-subtraction on TMSV to be the best choice for entanglement-based CV-QKD in obtaining large transmission distance. Nonetheless, we note that the non-Gaussianity does not improve the robustness of entanglement-based CV-QKD scheme against detection inefficiency. We believe that our work provides a practical view of implementing CV-QKD with multimode light under realistic conditions.

Non-Gaussian operations in measurement device independent quantum key distribution

Non-Gaussian operations in continous variable (CV) quantum key distribution (QKD) have been limited to photon subtraction on squeezed vacuum states only. This is mainly due to the ease of calculating the covariance matrix representation of such states. In this paper we study the effects of general non-Gaussian operations corresponding to photon addition, catalysis and subtraction on squeezed coherent states on CV measurement device independent (MDI) QKD. We find that non-Gaussianity coupled with coherence can yield significantly longer transmission distances than without. Particularly we observe that zero photon catalysis on two mode squeezed coherent state (TMSC) is an optimial choice for CV MDI QKD, while single photon subtraction is also a good candidate; both of them offering nearly 70 km of transmission distances. We also derive a single generalized covariance matrix for the aforementioned states which will be useful in several other aspects of CV quantum information processing.

Quantum teleportation of hybrid qubits and single-photon qubits using Gaussian resources

In this paper, we compare single-photon qubits and hybrid qubits as information carriers through quantum teleportation using a Gaussian continuous-variable channel. A hybrid qubit in our study is in the form of entanglement between a coherent state and a single photon. We find that hybrid qubits outperform photonic qubits when coherent amplitudes of the hybrid qubits are as low as $α\lesssim 1$, while photonic qubits yield better results for larger amplitudes. We analyze effects of photon losses, and observe that the overall character of teleportation for different qubits remains the same although the teleportation fidelities are degraded by photon losses. Our work provides a comparative look at practical quantum information processing with different types of qubits.

Non Gaussian information of heterogeneity in Soft Matter

Heterogeneity in dynamics in the form of non-Gaussian molecular displacement distributions appears ubiquitously in soft matter. We address the quantification of such heterogeneity using an information-theoretic measure of the distance between the actual displacement distribution and its nearest Gaussian estimation. We explore the usefulness of this measure in two generic scenarios of random walkers in heterogeneous media. We show that our proposed measure leads to a better quantification of non-Gaussianity than the conventional ones based on moment ratios.

Necessary and Sufficient Criteria for Gaussian Quantum Teleportation

Quantum teleportation (QT) serves as one of the building blocks of the current state information science and technology which necessitates proper characterization of the resources yielding QT. While entanglement is known to be the basic requirement to achieve QT, condition of sufficiency for QT still remains an open question. Here, we provide an analytic proof that in the case of Gaussian entangled resources, in general, Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) correlation is {\em sufficient for QT}. For a relatively restricted set of Gaussian states we provide even a tighter condition that EPR correlation is {\em both necessary and sufficient for QT}. Our results, in turn, provide a complete characterization of the resources required for QT.

Coherence assisted non-Gaussian measurement device independent quantum key distribution

Non-Gaussian operations on two mode squeezed vacuum states (TMSV) in continuous variable measurement device independent quantum key distribution (CV-MDI-QKD) protocols have been shown to effectively increase the total transmission distances drastically. In this paper we show that photon subtraction on a two mode squeezed coherent (PSTMSC) state can further improve the transmission distances remarkably. To that end we also provide a generalized covariance matrix corresponding to PSTMSC, which has not been attempted before. We show that coherence, defined as the amount of displacement of vacuum state, along with non-Gaussianity can help improve the performance of prevalent CV-MDI-QKD protocols. Furthermore, since we use realistic parameters, our technique is experimentally feasible and can be readily implemented

Wehrl Entropy Based Quantification of Nonclassicality for Single Mode Quantum Optical States

Nonclassical states of a quantized light are described in terms of Glauber-Sudarshan P distribution which is not a genuine classical probability distribution. Despite several attempts, defining a uniform measure of nonclassicality (NC) for the single mode quantum states of light is yet an open task. In our previous work [Phys. Rev. A 95, 012330 (2017)] we have shown that the existing well-known measures fail to quantify the NC of single mode states that are generated under multiple NC-inducing operations. Recently, Ivan et. al. [Quantum. Inf. Process. 11, 853 (2012)] have defined a measure of non-Gaussian character of quantum optical states in terms of Wehrl entropy. Here, we adopt this concept in the context of single mode NC. In this paper, we propose a new quantification of NC for the single mode quantum states of light as the difference between the total Wehrl entropy of the state and the maximum Wehrl entropy arising due to its classical characteristics. This we achieve by subtracting from its Wehrl entropy, the maximum Wehrl entropy attainable by any classical state that has same randomness as measured in terms of von-Neumann entropy. We obtain analytic expressions of NC for most of the states, in particular, all pure states and Gaussian mixed states. However, the evaluation of NC for the non-Gaussian mixed states is subject to extensive numerical computation that lies beyond the scope of the current work. We show that, along with the states generated under single NC-inducing operations, also for the broader class of states that are generated under multiple NC-inducing operations, our quantification enumerates the NC consistently.

Quantum Teleportation with a Class of Non-Gaussian Entangled Resources

Non-Gaussian entangled states of light have been found to improve the success of quantum telepor- tation. Earlier works in the literature focussed mainly on two-mode non-Gaussian states generated by de-Gaussification of two-mode squeezed vacuum states. In the current work, we study quan- tum teleportation with a class of non-Gaussian entangled resource states that are generated at the output of a passive beam splitter (BS) with different input single mode non-Gaussian states. In particular, we consider input states that are generated under successive application of squeezing and photon addition/subtraction operations in various orders. We focus on identifying what attributes of the resource states are necessary or sufficient for quantum teleportation (QT). To this end we first evaluate two attributes considered in the literature, viz. squeezed vacuum affinity (SVA) and EPR correlation. While SVA is not non-zero for all two-mode resource states, EPR correlation is neither necessary nor sufficient of QT. We consider yet another attribute, viz. two-mode quadrature squeezing as defined by Simon et. al. [Phys. Rev. A 49, 1567 (1994)]. Our numerical results on the de-Gaussified two-mode squeezed vacuum state as well as the BS generated non-Gaussian states lead us to the conclusion that two-mode quadrature squeezing is a necessary condition for QT, in general. We further demonstrate the plausibility of this conclusion by giving an analytical proof that two-mode quadrature squeezing is a necessary condition for QT in the case of symmetric two-mode Gaussian resource states.

Quantitative Study of Beam Splitter Generated Entanglement from Input States with Multiple Nonclassicality Inducing Operations

Continuous variable Beam Splitter (BS) generated entanglement from single mode optical states generated by single nonclassicality (NC) inducing operation have been found of immense importance in several information processing tasks. There exists a broader class of optical states, generated from successive action of multiple different NC-inducing operations, which show many intriguing nonclassical properties; however the BS conversion of the NC for such states remains unexplored. In this work we have critically analyzed the BS generated entanglement from such nonclassical optical states at input. Here we present a scenario where BS output entanglement becomes non-monotonic with the input NC parameters, amenable experimentally (e.g. number of photon excitation and squeezing strength), in contrast with the previous results with states comprising of single NC- inducing operation. We explain this counter intuitive feature in terms of the competition between the NCs induced by specific type of NC-inducing operations.
