Thermal effects in fluid structure interactions

In this article we consider two different heat conducting fluids each modelled by the incompressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier system separated by a non-linear elastic Koiter shell. The motion of the shell changes the domain of definition of the two separated fluids. For this setting we show the existence of a weak solution. The heat capacity of the shell is given energetically. It allows to consider transmission laws ranging from insulation to superconductivity. We follow a variational approach for fluid-structure interactions. To include temperature a novel two step minimization scheme is used to produce an approximation. The weak solutions are energetically closed and include a strictly positive temperature.

Techno economic feasibility study of solar ORC in India

Solar energy has enormous potential because there is a worldwide need to meet energy demands. Depleting non-renewable energy resources, increasing carbon emissions, and other environmental effects concern the scientific community to develop an alternative approach to electricity production. In this article, we present the study of a solar-powered Organic Rankine cycle considering Indian climatic conditions. Initially, we scrutinized seven working fluids and assessed their performance in the ORC at an evaporator pressure range of 9-30 bar and a mass flow rate range of 0.2 kg/s to 4.5 kg/s. For a fixed sink temperature of 298 K, we evaluate the system using four different power ratings of 2, 20, 50, and 100 kW based on four different source temperatures of 423 K, 403 K, 383 K, and 363 K. We estimate the system cost for each working fluid in each scenario separately. Our findings suggest that R 1233zd(E) is the optimum performing working fluid based on cost, cost-effectiveness, and environmental friendliness. We also notice that the estimated system scale cost is very competitive and could be a great alternative to the technologies already on the Indian market.

Exploring the BSM parameter space with Neural Network aided Simulation-Based Inference

Some of the issues that make sampling parameter spaces of various beyond the Standard Model (BSM) scenarios computationally expensive are the high dimensionality of the input parameter space, complex likelihoods, and stringent experimental constraints. In this work, we explore likelihood-free approaches, leveraging neural network-aided Simulation-Based Inference (SBI) to alleviate this issue. We focus on three amortized SBI methods: Neural Posterior Estimation (NPE), Neural Likelihood Estimation (NLE), and Neural Ratio Estimation (NRE) and perform a comparative analysis through the validation test known as the \textit{ Test of Accuracy with Random Points} (TARP), as well as through posterior sample efficiency and computational time. As an example, we focus on the scalar sector of the phenomenological minimal supersymmetric SM (pMSSM) and observe that the NPE method outperforms the others and generates correct posterior distributions of the parameters with a minimal number of samples. The efficacy of this framework is tested on 5 parameter pMSSM with Higgs and flavor physics data and its performance is compared with the MCMC method. We further add dark matter (DM) observables to make the task more challenging and consider a 9 parameter pMSSM. We observe that even though the efficiency factor drops, the amortized SBI method still produces faithful posterior distributions. SBI predicted points satisfying DM constraints are mostly bino-dominated upto $\sim$ 1.5 TeV, and are mostly wino-dominated within the 1.5 - 2 TeV range.

Markov Chain Monte Carlo analysis to probe trilinear $R$-parity violating SUSY scenarios and possible LHC signatures

In this article, we probe the trilinear $R$-parity violating (RPV) supersymmetric (SUSY) scenarios with specific nonzero interactions in the light of neutrino oscillation, Higgs, and flavor observables. We attempt to fit the set of observables using a state-of-the-art Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) setup and study its impact on the model parameter space. Our main objective is to constrain the trilinear couplings individually, along with some other SUSY parameters relevant to the observables. We present the constrained parameter regions in the form of marginalized posterior distributions on different two-dimensional parameter planes. We perform our analyses with two different scenarios characterized by our choices for the lightest SUSY particle (LSP), bino, and stop. Our results indicate that the lepton number violating trilinear couplings $λ_{i33}$ ($i$=1,2) and $λ_{j33}^{\prime}$ ($j$=1,2,3) can be at most of the order of $10^{-4}$ or even smaller while $\tanβ$ is restricted to below 15 even when $3σ$ allowed regions are considered. We further comment on the possible LHC signatures of these LSPs focusing on and around the best-fit regions.

Model-independent Reconstruction of UV Luminosity Function and Reionization Epoch

We conduct a first comprehensive study of the Luminosity Function (LF) using a non-parametric approach. We use Gaussian Process to fit available luminosity data between redshifts $z \sim 2-8$. Our free-form LF in the non-parametric approach rules out the conventional Schechter function model to describe the abundance-magnitude relation at redshifts $z=3$ and $4$. Hints of deviation from the Schechter function are also noticed at redshifts 2, 7 and 8 at lower statistical significance. Significant deviation starts for brighter ionizing sources at $M_{\rm UV} \lesssim -21$. The UV luminosity density data at different redshifts are then derived by integrating the LFs obtained from both methods with a truncation magnitude of $-17$. In our analysis, we also include the first 90 arcmin$^2$ JWST/NIRCam data at $z \sim 9-12$. Since at larger magnitudes, we do not find major deviations from the Schechter function, the integrated luminosity density differs marginally between the two methods. Finally, we obtain the history of reionization from a joint analysis of UV luminosity density data along with the ionization fraction data and Planck observation of Cosmic Microwave Background. The history of reionization is not affected by the deviation of LFs from Schechter function at lower magnitudes. We derive reionization optical depth to be $τ_{\rm re}=0.0494^{+0.0007}_{-0.0006}$ and the duration between 10$\%$ and 90$\% $completion of ionization process is found to be $Δz\sim 1.627^{+0.059}_{-0.071}$.

Weak solutions and singular limits for a compressible fluid-structure interaction problem with slip boundary conditions

We study a system describing the compressible barotropic fluids interacting with (visco) elastic solid shell/plate. In particular, the elastic structure is part of the moving boundary of the fluid, and the Navier-slip type boundary condition is taken into account. Depending on the reference geometry (flat or not), we show the existence of weak solutions to the coupled system provided the adiabatic exponent satisfies $\gamma > \frac{12}{7}$ without damping and $\gamma > \frac{3}{2}$ with structure damping, utilizing the domain extension and regularization approximation. Moreover, via a modified relative entropy method in time-dependent domains, we give a rigorous justification of the incompressible inviscid limit of the compressible fluid-structure interaction problem with a flat reference geometry, in the regime of low Mach number, high Reynolds number, and well-prepared initial data. As a byproduct, with a fixed Reynolds number, we derive the incompressible limit without extra assumption. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first result concerning the singular limit problem for compressible fluids interacting with elastic structures.

Bilinear R-parity violating supersymmetry under the light of neutrino oscillation, higgs and flavor data

In this work, we explore a well motivated beyond the Standard Model scenario, namely, R-parity violating Supersymmetry, in the context of light neutrino masses and mixing. We assume that the R-parity is only broken by the lepton number violating bilinear term. We try to fit two non-zero neutrino mass square differences and three mixing angle values obtained from the global $χ^2$ analysis of neutrino oscillation data. We have also taken into account the updated data of the standard model (SM) Higgs mass and its coupling strengths with other SM particles from LHC Run-II along with low energy flavor violating constraints like rare b-hadron decays. We have used a Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) analysis to constrain the new physics parameter space. While doing so, we ensure that all the existing collider constraints are duly taken into account. Through our analysis, we have derived the most stringent constraints possible to date with existing data on the 9 bilinear R-parity violating parameters along with $μ$ and $\tanβ$. We further explore the possibility of explaining the anomalous muon~(g~-~2) measurement staying within the parameter space allowed by neutrino, Higgs and flavor data while satisfying the collider constraints as well. We find that there still remains a small sub-TeV parameter space where the required excess can be obtained.

Ruling out Strongly Interacting Dark Matter-Dark Radiation Models from Joint Observations of Cosmic Microwave Background and Quasar Absorption Spectra

The cold dark matter (CDM) paradigm provides a remarkably good description of the Universe's large-scale structure. However, some discrepancies exist between its predictions and observations at very small sub-galactic scales. To address these issues, the consideration of a strong interaction between dark matter particles and dark radiation emerges as an intriguing alternative. In this study, we explore the constraints on those models using joint observations of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) and Quasars absorption spectra with our previously built parameter estimation package CosmoReionMC. At 2-$σ$ confidence limits, this analysis rules out the strongly interacting Dark Matter - Dark Radiation models within the recently proposed ETHOS framework, representing the most stringent constraint on those models to the best of our knowledge. Future research using a 21-cm experiment holds the potential to reveal stronger constraints or uncover hidden interactions within the dark sector.

Non-parametric Reconstruction of Photon Escape Fraction from Reionization

One of the most crucial yet poorly constrained parameters in modelling the ionizing emissivity is the escape fraction of photons from star-forming galaxies. Several theoretical and observational studies have been conducted over the past few years, but consensus regarding its redshift evolution has yet to be achieved. We present here the first non-parametric reconstruction of this parameter as a function of redshift from a data-driven reionization model using a Gaussian Process Regression method. Our finding suggests a mild redshift evolution of escape fraction with a mean value of $4\%,7\%,\sim10\%$ at $z=2,6,12$. However, a constant escape fraction of $6-10\%$ at $z\gtrsim 6$ is still allowed by current data and also matches other reionization-related observations. With the detection of fainter high redshift galaxies from upcoming observations of JWST, the approach presented here will be a robust tool to put the most stringent constraint on escape fraction as well as reionization histories.

Existence of weak solution for a compressible multicomponent fluid structure interaction problem

We analyze a system of PDEs governing the interaction between two compressible mutually noninteracting fluids and a shell of Koiter type encompassing a time dependent 3D domain filled by the fluids. The dynamics of the fluids is modelled by a system resembilng compressible Navier-Stokes equations with a physically realistic pressure depending on densities of both the fluids. In fact in the present article the dependence of the fluid pressure on the densities is analogous to the ones considered in \cite{NovoPoko} (where the authors deal with a bi-fluid system in a time independent smooth domain). The shell constitutes the boundary of the fluid domain and it possesses a non-linear, non-convex Koiter energy (of a quite general form). We are interested in the existence of a weak solution to the system until the time-dependent boundary approaches a self-intersection or the Koiter energy degenerates. We first prove a global existence result when the adiabatic exponents solve $\max\{γ, β\}>2$ and $\min\{γ,β\}>0,$ further the densities are comparable and the structure involved is non-dissipative. Next with the assumption that the structure is dissipative we extend our global existence result to the critical case $\max\{γ,β\}\geq 2$ and $\min\{γ,β\}>0.$ The result is achieved in several steps involving, extension of the physical domain, penalization of the interface condition, artificial regularization of the shell energy, added structural dissipation and suitable limit passages depending on uniform estimates. In order to deal with the bi-fluid system we generalize the almost compactness argument developed in \cite{NovoPoko, Vasseur} to the case of time dependent domains with uniform Hölder continuous boundaries. Moreover, the proof of such a compactness result depends on the existence of renormalized continuity equation in time dependent domains.

Hybrid analytic and machine-learned baryonic property insertion into galactic dark matter haloes

While cosmological dark matter-only simulations relying solely on gravitational effects are comparably fast to compute, baryonic properties in simulated galaxies require complex hydrodynamic simulations that are computationally costly to run. We explore the merging of an extended version of the equilibrium model, an analytic formalism describing the evolution of the stellar, gas, and metal content of galaxies, into a machine learning framework. In doing so, we are able to recover more properties than the analytic formalism alone can provide, creating a high-speed hydrodynamic simulation emulator that populates galactic dark matter haloes in N-body simulations with baryonic properties. While there exists a trade-off between the reached accuracy and the speed advantage this approach offers, our results outperform an approach using only machine learning for a subset of baryonic properties. We demonstrate that this novel hybrid system enables the fast completion of dark matter-only information by mimicking the properties of a full hydrodynamic suite to a reasonable degree, and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of hybrid versus machine learning-only frameworks. In doing so, we offer an acceleration of commonly deployed simulations in cosmology.

A phase-field approach to shape and topology optimization of acoustic waves in dissipative media

We investigate the problem of finding the optimal shape and topology of a system of acoustic lenses in a dissipative medium. The sound propagation is governed by a general semilinear strongly damped wave equation. We introduce a phase-field formulation of this problem through diffuse interfaces between the lenses and the surrounding fluid. The resulting formulation is shown to be well-posed and we prove that the corresponding optimization problem has a minimizer. By analyzing properties of the reduced objective functional and well-posedness of the adjoint problem, we rigorously derive first-order optimality conditions for this problem. Additionally, we consider the $Γ$-limit of the reduced objective functional and in this way establish a relation between the diffuse interface problem and a perimeter-regularized sharp interface shape optimization problem.

CosmoReionMC: A package for estimating cosmological and astrophysical parameters using CMB, Lyman-α absorption and global 21 cm data

We present a Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC)-based parameter estimation package, CosmoReionMC, to jointly constrain cosmological parameters of the $Λ$CDM model and the astrophysical parameters related to hydrogen reionization. The package is based on a previously developed physically motivated semi-analytical model for reionization, a similar semi-analytical model for computing the global 21~cm signal during the cosmic dawn and using an appropriately modified version of the publicly available CAMB for computing the CMB anisotropies. These calculations are then coupled to an MCMC ensemble sampler \texttt{emcee} to compute the posterior distributions of the model parameter. The model has twelve free parameters in total: five cosmological and seven related to the stellar populations. We constrain the parameters by matching the theoretical predictions with CMB data from Planck, observations related to the quasar absorption spectra and, for the first time, the global 21~cm signal from EDGES. We find that incorporating the quasar spectra data in the analysis tightens the bounds on the electron scattering optical depth $τ$ and consequently the normalization $A_s$ of the primordial matter power spectrum (or equivalently $σ_8$). Furthermore, when we include the EDGES data in the analysis, we find that an early population of metal-free stars with efficient radio emission is necessary to match the absorption amplitude. The CosmoReionMC package should have interesting future applications, e.g., probing non-standard extensions to the $Λ$CDM model.

Strong well-posedness, stability and optimal control theory for a mathematical model for magneto-viscoelastic fluids

In this article, we study the strong well-posedness, stability and optimal control of an incompressible magneto-viscoelastic fluid model in two dimensions. The model consists of an incompressible Navier--Stokes equation for the velocity field, an evolution equation for the deformation tensor, and a gradient flow equation for the magnetization vector. First, we prove that the model under consideration posseses a global strong solution in a suitable functional framework. Second, we derive stability estimates with respect to an external magnetic field. Based on the stability estimates we use the external magnetic field as the control to minimize a cost functional of tracking-type. We prove existence of an optimal control and derive first-order necessary optimality conditions. Finally, we consider a second optimal control problem, where the external magnetic field, which represents the control, is generated by a finite number of fixed magnetic field coils.

Existence of weak solutions to a diffuse interface model involving magnetic fluids with unmatched densities

In this article we prove the global existence of weak solutions for a diffuse interface model in a bounded domain (both in 2D and 3D) involving incompressible magnetic fluids with unmatched densities. The model couples the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, gradient flow of the magnetization vector and the Cahn-Hilliard dynamics describing the partial mixing of two fluids. The density of the mixture depends on an order parameter and the modelling, specifically the density dependence, is inspired from Abels, Garcke and Grün 2011.

Dark matter annihilation in $ω$ Centauri: Astrophysical implications derived from the MWA radio data

We present an analysis of Murchison Widefield Array radio telescope data from $ω$ Cen, possibly a stripped dwarf spheroidal galaxy core captured by our Galaxy. Recent interpretations of Fermi-LAT $γ$-ray data by Brown {\it et al.} (2019) and Reynoso-Cordova {\it et al.} (2019) suggest that $ω$ Cen may contain significant Dark Matter. We utilise their best-fit Dark Matter annihilation models, and an estimate of the magnetic field strength in $ω$ Cen, to calculate the expected radio synchrotron signal from annihilation, and show that one can usefully rule out significant parts of the magnetic field - diffusion coefficient plane using our current observational limits on the radio emission. Improvement by a factor of 10-100 on these limits could constrain the models even more tightly.

Global existence of weak solutions to a diffuse interface model for magnetic fluids

This article is devoted to the derivation and analysis of a system of partial differential equations modeling a diffuse interface flow of two Newtonian incompressible magnetic fluids. The system consists of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations coupled with an evolutionary equation for the magnetization vector and the Cahn-Hilliard equations. We show global in time existence of weak solutions to the system using the time discretization method.

Observability and unique continuation of the adjoint of a linearized compressible fluid-structure model in a 2d channel

Our objective is to study the observability and unique continuation property of the adjoint of a linearized compressible fluid structure interaction model in a 2D channel. Concerning the structure we will consider a damped Euler-Bernoulli beam located on a portion of the boundary. In the present article we establish an observability inequality for the adjoint of the linearized fluid structure interaction problem under consideration which in principle is equivalent with the null controllability of the linearized system. As a corollary of the derived observability inequality we also obtain a unique continuation property for the adjoint problem.
