Physics-Informed Neural Networks for Estimating Convective Heat Transfer in Jet Impingement Cooling: A Comparison with Conjugate Heat Transfer Simulations

Efficient cooling is vital for the performance and reliability of modern systems such as electronics, nuclear reactors, and industrial equipment. Jet impingement cooling is widely used for its high local heat transfer rates. Accurate estimation of convective heat transfer coefficient (CHTC) is essential for design, simulation, and control of thermal systems. However, estimating spatially varying CHTCs from limited and noisy temperature data poses a challenging inverse problem. This study presents a physics-informed neural network (PINN) framework to estimate both averaged and spatially varying CHTCs at the fluid-solid interface in a jet impingement setup at Reynolds number 5000. The model uses sparse and noisy temperature data from within the solid and embeds the transient heat conduction equation along with boundary and initial conditions into its loss function. This enables inference of unknown boundary parameters without explicit modeling of the fluid domain. Validation is performed using synthetic temperature data from high-fidelity conjugate heat transfer (CHT) simulations. The framework is tested under various additive Gaussian noise levels (up to 30 percent) and sampling rates 0.25 to 4.0 per second. For noise levels up to 10% and sampling rates of 0.5 per second or higher, estimated CHTCs match CHT-derived benchmarks with relative errors below 8 percent. Even under high-noise scenarios, the framework maintains predictive accuracy when time resolution is sufficient. These results highlight the method's robustness to noise and sparse data, offering a scalable alternative to traditional inverse methods, experimental measurements, or full CHT modeling for estimating boundary thermal parameters in real-world cooling applications.

Collective phenomena in chirally imbalanced medium

We calculate the gluon polarization tensor for a chirally imbalanced plasma using hard thermal loop approximation in the real time formulation of thermal field theory. The dispersion relations obtained from the poles of the effective gluon propagator are solved numerically as well as analytically in appropriate limiting cases. It is seen that the degenerate transverse modes split into left and right handed circularly polarized modes. We also compute imaginary poles of the propagator which signal the presence of instability in the plasma. Relevant time scales for development of such instabilities are discussed in detail. Furthermore, we compute both the real and imaginary parts of the static heavy-quark potential in the chirally imbalanced plasma and argue that quarkonium suppression is enhanced due to the combined effects of a reduced debye screening length and an increased decay width. In addition, we calculate the gluon spectral density, sum rules and residues for various cases, providing a comprehensive understanding of the collective behaviour of the medium.

Convergence of exclusion processes and KPZ equation to the KPZ fixed point

We show that under the 1:2:3 scaling, critically probing large space and time, the height function of finite range asymmetric exclusion processes and the KPZ equation converge to the KPZ fixed point, constructed earlier as a limit of the totally asymmetric simple exclusion process through exact formulas. Consequently, based on recent results of \cite{wu},\cite{DM20}, the KPZ line ensemble converges to the Airy line ensemble. For the KPZ equation we are able to start from a continuous function plus a finite collection of narrow wedges. For nearest neighbour exclusions, we can take (discretizations) of height functions with $h(x)\le C(1+|x|)$. For non-nearest neighbour exclusions, we are restricted at the present time to a class of (random) initial data, dense in continuous functions in the topology of uniform convergence on compacts. The method is by comparison of the transition probabilities of finite range exclusion processes and the totally asymmetric simple exclusion processes using energy estimates.

Normal $4$-pseudomanifolds with a relative 2-skeleton

The study of face-number-related invariants in simplicial complexes is a central topic in combinatorial topology. Among these, the invariant $g_2$ plays a significant role. For a normal $d$-pseudomanifold $K$ ($d \geq 3$), it is known that $g_2(K) \geq g_2(lk(v, K))$ for every vertex $v$. If $K$ has at most two singularities and satisfies $g_2(K) = g_2(lk(t, K))$ for a singular vertex $t$, then $g_3(K) \geq g_3(lk(t,K))$ holds. A normal $d$-pseudomanifold $K$ is called $g_2$- and $g_3$-optimal if $g_2(K) = g_2(lk (t,K))$ and $g_3(K) = g_3(lk (t,K))$ for a singular vertex $t$. In this article, we establish structural results for normal $4$-pseudomanifolds under $g_2$- and $g_3$-optimality conditions. We show that if $K$ is a normal $4$-pseudomanifold with exactly one singular vertex $t$ and is $g_2$- and $g_3$-optimal at $t$, then $K$ can be obtained from boundary complexes of $5$-simplices through a sequence of operations of types vertex foldings and connected sums. When $K$ has exactly two singularities and is $g_2$- and $g_3$-optimal at one singular vertex, it is derived from the boundary complexes of $4$-simplices through a sequence of operations of types one-vertex suspensions, vertex foldings, and connected sums. Alternatively, we prove that if $K$ has two singular vertices and is $g_2$- and $g_3$-optimal at one of them, then it arises from boundary complexes of $5$-simplices through a sequence of operations of types vertex foldings, edge foldings, and connected sums.

Shear and bulk viscous coefficients of a hot and chirally imbalanced quark matter using NJL model

The shear $η$ and bulk $ζ$ viscous coefficients have been calculated in a hot and chirally asymmetric quark matter quantified in terms of a chiral chemical potential (CCP) using the two-flavor Nambu-Jona--Lasinio (NJL) model. This is done by employing the one-loop Green-Kubo formalism where the viscous coefficients have been extracted from the long-wavelength limit of the in-medium spectral function corresponding to the energy momentum tensor (EMT) current correlator calculated using the real time formalism of finite temperature field theory. The momentum dependent thermal width of the quark/antiquark that enters into the expression of the viscosities as a dynamical input containing interactions, has been obtained from the $2\to2$ scattering processes mediated via the collective mesonic modes in scalar and pseudoscalar chanels encoded in respective in-medium polarization functions having explicit temperature and CCP dependence. Several thermodynamic quantities such as pressure, energy density, entropy density $(s)$, specific heat and isentropic speed of sound have also been calculated at finite CCP. The temperature and CCP dependence of the viscosity to entropy density ratios $η/s$ and $ζ/s$ have also been studied.

Effect of chiral imbalance on the electrical conductivity of hot and dense quark matter using Green-Kubo Method within the 2-flavour gauged NJL model

The electrical conductivity of hot and dense quark matter is calculated using the 2-flavour gauged Nambu-Jona--Lasinio (NJL) model in the presence of a chiral imbalance quantified in terms of a chiral chemical potential (CCP). To this end, the in-medium spectral function corresponding to the vector current correlator is evaluated employing the real time formulation of finite temperature field theory. Taking the long wavelength limit of the spectral function we extract the electrical conductivity using the Green-Kubo relation. The thermal widths of the quarks/antiquarks that appear in the expression of electrical conductivity are calculated by considering the $2\to2$ scattering in the NJL model. The scattering amplitudes containing the polarization functions of the mesonic modes in the scalar and pseudoscalar channels are also evaluated by considering finite value of CCP. We find that the ratio of electrical conductivity to temperature has significant dependence on CCP especially in the low temperature region.

Dynamics of Hot QCD Matter 2024 -- Bulk Properties

The second Hot QCD Matter 2024 conference at IIT Mandi focused on various ongoing topics in high-energy heavy-ion collisions, encompassing theoretical and experimental perspectives. This proceedings volume includes 19 contributions that collectively explore diverse aspects of the bulk properties of hot QCD matter. The topics encompass the dynamics of electromagnetic fields, transport properties, hadronic matter, spin hydrodynamics, and the role of conserved charges in high-energy environments. These studies significantly enhance our understanding of the complex dynamics of hot QCD matter, the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) formed in high-energy nuclear collisions. Advances in theoretical frameworks, including hydrodynamics, spin dynamics, and fluctuation studies, aim to improve theoretical calculations and refine our knowledge of the thermodynamic properties of strongly interacting matter. Experimental efforts, such as those conducted by the ALICE and STAR collaborations, play a vital role in validating these theoretical predictions and deepening our insight into the QCD phase diagram, collectivity in small systems, and the early-stage behavior of strongly interacting matter. Combining theoretical models with experimental observations offers a comprehensive understanding of the extreme conditions encountered in relativistic heavy-ion and proton-proton collisions.

Three-halves variation of geodesics in the directed landscape

We show that geodesics in the directed landscape have $3/2$-variation and that weight functions along the geodesics have cubic variation. We show that the geodesic and its landscape environment around an interior point has a small-scale limit. This limit is given in terms of the directed landscape with Brownian-Bessel boundary conditions. The environments around different interior points are asymptotically independent. We give tail bounds with optimal exponents for geodesic and weight function increments. As an application of our results, we show that geodesics are not Hölder-$2/3$ and that weight functions are not Hölder-$1/3$, although these objects are known to be Hölder with all lower exponents.

Speed of sound and isothermal compressibility in a magnetized quark matter with anomalous magnetic moment of quarks

We study the characteristics of quark matter under the influence of a background magnetic field with anomalous magnetic moment (AMM) of quarks at finite temperature and quark chemical potential in the framework of Polyakov loop extended Nambu Jona-Lasinio (PNJL) model. In presence of a magnetic field, the speed of sound and isothermal compressibility become anisotropic with respect to the direction of the background magnetic field, splitting into parallel and perpendicular directions with respect to the magnetic field. Though the qualitative nature of parallel and perpendicular components of squared speed of sound appear similar, they differ in magnitude at lower values of temperature. The parallel and perpendicular components of isothermal compressibility decrease with increasing temperature, indicating a trend towards increased incompressible strongly interacting matter. On inclusion of the AMM of quarks, the perpendicular component of isothermal compressibility becomes greater than the parallel component. Additionally, we investigate the quark number susceptibility normalized by its value at zero magnetic field, which may indicate the presence of magnetic fields in the system.

Analysis of Unsaturated Slope Stability under Seismic and Surcharge Loading by Upper Bound Rigid Block Method

Failure of earthen slopes is a very recurrent phenomenon, credited mainly due to the excess rainfall and application of surfeit surcharge. However, most of the analyses regarding slope stability were performed without considering the unsaturated state of the soil. The prime purpose of the present manuscript is to address the stability of unsaturated homogeneous slopes subjected to surcharge load and pseudo-static seismic forces under different climatic conditions. The upper bound limit analysis technique was used based on the log-spiral failure mechanism. The suction stress-based effective stress approach was used to capture the effect of the unsaturated zone of the slope. The suction stress is modelled using Gardner's one-parameter hydraulic conductivity function and van-Genuchten's soil water characteristics curve. An extensive parametric study is carried out to assess the combined effect of slope geometry, soil-strength parameters, hydro-mechanical parameters, depth of water table, various flow conditions, surcharge load, and seismic loading. A few stability charts are proposed to show the impact of surcharge load and seismic load separately on unsaturated homogeneous slopes subjected to various climatic conditions. The present computed solutions match quite well with the available solutions prescribed in the literature.

A structure theorem for homology 4-manifolds with $g_2\leq 5$

Numerous structural findings of homology manifolds have been derived in various ways in relation to $g_2$-values. The homology $4$-manifolds with $g_2\leq 5$ are characterized combinatorially in this article. It is well-known that all homology $4$-manifolds for $g_2\leq 2$ are polytopal spheres. We demonstrate that homology $4$-manifolds with $g_2\leq 5$ are triangulated spheres and are derived from triangulated 4-spheres with $g_2\leq 2$ by a series of connected sum, bistellar 1- and 2-moves, edge contraction, edge expansion, and edge flipping operations. We establish that the above inequality is optimally attainable, i.e., it cannot be extended to $g_2 = 6$.

A characterization of $g_2$-minimal normal 3-pseudomanifolds with at most four singularities

Let $Δ$ be a $g_2$-minimal normal 3-pseudomanifold. A vertex in $Δ$ whose link is not a sphere is called a singular vertex. When $Δ$ contains at most two singular vertices, its combinatorial characterization is known [9]. In this article, we present a combinatorial characterization of such a $Δ$ when it has three singular vertices, including one $\mathbb{RP}^2$-singularity, or four singular vertices, including two $\mathbb{RP}^2$-singularities. In both cases, we prove that $Δ$ is obtained from a one-vertex suspension of a surface, and some boundary complexes of $4$-simplices by applying the combinatorial operations of types connected sums, vertex foldings, and edge foldings.

Electrical conductivity and shear viscosity of a pion gas in a thermo-magnetic medium

We evaluate the electrical conductivity and shear viscosity of a interacting pion gas in a thermo-magnetic medium using the kinetic theory. The collision term of the relativistic Boltzmann transport equation in presence of background magnetic field is solved using the relaxation time approximation. The medium modified relaxation time is obtained from the corresponding in-medium $ππ\rightarrow ππ$ scattering cross-section calculated using the thermo-magnetic $ρ$ propagator. It is observed that the average relaxation time shows a $1/T^4$ variation with temperature for a fixed value of magnetic field. The relaxation time shows a mild oscillatory variation with respect to the magnetic field. It is also observed that the medium dependent scattering cross-section causes a considerable amount of influence on the electrical conductivity and shear viscosity compared to its vacuum counterpart.

The mass and spectral function of scalar and pseudoscalar mesons in a hot and chirally imbalanced medium using the two-flavor NJL model

We explore the properties of neutral mesons within the context of a chirally imbalanced medium, employing the two-flavor Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. The temperature dependence of the constituent quark mass at finite values of the chiral chemical potential (CCP) demonstrates the well-established phenomena of chiral catalysis at lower temperatures and inverse chiral catalysis at higher temperatures. The polarization functions in both the scalar ($σ$) and pseudo-scalar ($π^0$) channels have been evaluated using real time formalism of thermal field theory. These have been used to determine the masses and spectral functions of $ σ$ and $ π$ mesons. Detailed investigation of the analytic structure of the imaginary part of the polarization function for $σ$ and $π$ mesons results in the emergence of non-trivial Landau cut contributions due to the presence of chiral imbalance. The multiple solutions for the mass of the $π$ meson for specific values of CCP have been analysed on the basis of their residue at the pole. Furthermore, we have observed abrupt changes in the masses of both scalar and pseudo-scalar mesons at finite CCP values, particularly at higher temperatures. A decreasing trend in the Mott transition temperature is seen with the increase in CCP.

Ellipticity of dilepton production from a hot and magnetized hadronic medium

We study the azimuthal angle and transverse momentum dependence of dilepton production from hot and magnetized hadronic matter using $ρ^0$-meson dominance. The thermomagnetic spectral function of the $ρ^0$ is evaluated using the real time method of thermal field theory and Schwinger proper-time formulation. A continuous spectrum is obtained in which there is sizeable Landau cut contributions in the low invariant mass region as a consequence of finite background field. The emission rate of the dileptons is found to be significantly anisotropic in this region and the later effectively increases with the strength of the background field. In addition, we also evaluate the elliptic flow parameter ($v_2$) as a function of invariant mass for different values of magnetic field and temperature. We find that in low invariant mass region $v_2$ remains positive at lower values of $eB$ signifying that the production rate could be larger along the direction transverse to the background field. This behaviour is consistent with the angular dependence of dilepton production rate.

Collective modes of a massive fermion in a magnetized medium with finite anomalous magnetic moment

We calculate, in a systematic way, the general structure of the self-energy of light massive fermions and the effective propagator in a thermomagnetic medium with the inclusion of anomalous magnetic moment (AMM) of the fermion in the weak field approximation. It is found that the self-energy of a massive fermion in this case consists of five non-trivial structure factors in contrast to the massless case where the self-energy contains only four. We employ the real time formalism (RTF) of thermal field theory within the ambit of hard thermal loop (HTL) approximation in the evaluation of the structure factors. The collective modes are obtained from the poles of the effective propagator of the fermion. The investigation of the dispersion relations for non-degenerate ground state shows that the effect of the magnetic field is more for up quark than the down quark because of the larger charge of the former. The important observation is that in the first excited state the degeneracy, which exists for non-zero magnetic field is lifted due to the inclusion of the AMM. It is also observed that the first excited state becomes less dispersive compared to the case when AMM is not considered, whereas the second excited state becomes more dispersive when both the magnetic field and the AMM are non-zero in comparison to the case with vanishing AMM. These effects are observed in both particle and hole-like excitations. Qualitatively similar behaviour is also seen in the case of down quarks.

Speed of Sound in Magnetized Nuclear Matter

Employing the non-linear Walecka model we investigate the characteristics of nuclear matter under the influence of a background magnetic field at a finite temperature and baryon chemical potential. In the presence of the magnetic field the spinodal lines and the critical end point (CEP) undergo changes in the $T-μ_B$ plane. The squared speed of sound exhibits anisotropic behavior, dividing into parallel and perpendicular components. Additionally, the presence of a magnetic field induces anisotropy in the isothermal compressibility. It is found that the parallel component is smaller than the perpendicular one for all values of temperature, chemical potential and magnetic field indicating that the equation of state is stiffer along the magnetic field direction.

Infinite order phase transition in the slow bond TASEP

In the slow bond problem the rate of a single edge in the Totally Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Process (TASEP) is reduced from 1 to $1-\varepsilon$ for some small $\varepsilon>0$. Janowsky and Lebowitz posed the well-known question of whether such very small perturbations could affect the macroscopic current. Different groups of physicists, using a range of heuristics and numerical simulations reached opposing conclusions on whether the critical value of $\varepsilon$ is 0. This was ultimately resolved rigorously in Basu-Sidoravicius-Sly which established that $\varepsilon_c=0$. Here we study the effect of the current as $\varepsilon$ tends to 0 and in doing so explain why it was so challenging to predict on the basis of numerical simulations. In particular we show that the current has an infinite order phase transition at 0, with the effect of the perturbation tending to 0 faster than any polynomial. Our proof focuses on the Last Passage Percolation formulation of TASEP where a slow bond corresponds to reinforcing the diagonal. We give a multiscale analysis to show that when $\varepsilon$ is small the effect of reinforcement remains small compared to the difference between optimal and near optimal geodesics. Since geodesics can be perturbed on many different scales, we inductively bound the tails of the effect of reinforcement by controlling the number of near optimal geodesics and giving new tail estimates for the local time of (near) geodesics along the diagonal.
