Complexity via Replica Trick

We consider the complexity of a single-sided AdS black hole as modelled by an end-of-the-world brane. In addition, we present multi-boundary partition functions and matter correlation functions for such a setting. We compute the complexity using a modified replica trick corresponding to the "quenched geodesic length" in JT gravity. The late-time behaviour of complexity shows a saturation to a constant value of order $e^{S_0}$ following a period of linear growth. Furthermore, we show that our approach leads to an improved result for the variance of complexity, namely it being time-independent at late times. We conclude by commenting on the introduction of dynamical end-of-the-world branes.

Geometric phases distinguish entangled states in wormhole quantum mechanics

We establish a relation between entanglement in simple quantum mechanical qubit systems and in wormhole physics as considered in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence. We show that in both cases, states with the same entanglement structure, indistinguishable by any local measurement, nevertheless are characterized by a different Berry phase. This feature is experimentally accessible in coupled qubit systems where states with different Berry phase are related by unitary transformations. In the wormhole case, these transformations are identified with a time evolution of one of the two throats.

Berry phases, wormholes and factorization in AdS/CFT

For two-dimensional holographic CFTs, we demonstrate the role of Berry phases for relating the non-factorization of the Hilbert space to the presence of wormholes. The wormholes are characterized by a non-exact symplectic form that gives rise to the Berry phase. For wormholes connecting two spacelike regions in gravitational spacetimes, we find that the non-exactness is linked to a variable appearing in the phase space of the boundary CFT. This variable corresponds to a loop integral in the bulk. Through this loop integral, non-factorization becomes apparent in the dual entangled CFTs. Furthermore, we classify Berry phases in holographic CFTs based on the type of dual bulk diffeomorphism involved. We distinguish between Virasoro, gauge and modular Berry phases, each corresponding to a spacetime wormhole geometry in the bulk. Using kinematic space, we extend a relation between the modular Hamiltonian and the Berry curvature to the finite temperature case. We find that the Berry curvature, given by the Crofton form, characterizes the topological transition of the entanglement entropy in presence of a black hole.

Complexity as a holographic probe of strong cosmic censorship

Based on reasonable assumptions, we propose a new expression for Lloyd's bound, which confines the complexity growth of charged black holes. We then revisit holographic complexity for charged black branes in the presence of a finite cutoff. Using the proposed Lloyd's bound we find a relation between the UV and the behind the horizon cutoff. This is found to be consistent with the factorization of the partition function at leading order in large N. We argue that the result may be thought of as a holographic realization of strong cosmic censorship.

Dark bubbles and black holes

In this paper we study shells of matter and black holes on the expanding bubbles realizing de Sitter space, that were proposed in arXiv:1807.01570. We construct explicit solutions for a rigid shell of matter as well as black hole like solutions. The latter of these can also be used to construct Randall-Sundrum braneworld black holes in four dimensions.

A modified risk detection approach of biomarkers by frailty effect on multiple time to event data

Multiple indications of disease progression found in a cancer patient by loco-regional relapse, distant metastasis and death. Early identification of these indications is necessary to change the treatment strategy. Biomarkers play an essential role in this aspect. The survival chance of a patient is dependent on the biomarker, and the treatment strategy also differs accordingly, e.g., the survival prediction of breast cancer patients diagnosed with HER2 positive status is different from the same with HER2 negative status. This results in a different treatment strategy. So, the heterogeneity of the biomarker statuses or levels should be taken into consideration while modelling the survival outcome. This heterogeneity factor which is often unobserved, is called frailty. When multiple indications are present simultaneously, the scenario becomes more complex as only one of them can occur, which will censor the occurrence of other events. Incorporating independent frailties of each biomarker status for every cause of indications will not depict the complete picture of heterogeneity. The events indicating cancer progression are likely to be inter-related. So, the correlation should be incorporated through the frailties of different events. In our study, we considered a multiple events or risks model with a heterogeneity component. Based on the estimated variance of the frailty, the threshold levels of a biomarker are utilised as early detection tool of the disease progression or death. Additive-gamma frailty model is considered to account the correlation between different frailty components and estimation of parameters are performed using Expectation-Maximization Algorithm. With the extensive algorithm in R, we have obtained the threshold levels of activity of a biomarker in a multiple events scenario.

Bubble needs strings

In this paper, we want to emphasize the pivotal role played by strings in the model realizing de Sitter using an expanding bubble, proposed and subsequently developed in arXiv:1807.01570, arXiv:1907.04268, and arXiv:2001.07433. Contrary to the Randall-Sundrum model of brane-localized gravity, we use the end points of radially stretched strings to obtain matter sourcing gravity induced on the bubble wall. This allows us to reinterpret the possible volume divergence coming from naive dimensional reduction as mass renormalization in four dimensional particle physics. Furthermore, we argue that the residual time dependence in the bulk, pointed out by some recent work as a possible shortcoming of such models, is automatically cured in presence of these stringy sources.

Handling Missingness Value on Jointly Measured Time-Course and Time-to-event Data

Joint modeling technique is a recent advancement in effectively analyzing the longitudinal history of patients with the occurrence of an event of interest attached to it. This procedure is successfully implemented in biomarker studies to examine parents with the occurrence of tumor. One of the typical problem that influences the necessary inference is the presence of missing values in the longitudinal responses as well as in covariates. The occurrence of missingness is very common due to the dropout of patients from the study. This article presents an effective and detailed way to handle the missing values in the covariates and response variable. This study discusses the effect of different multiple imputation techniques on the inferences of joint modeling implemented on imputed datasets. A simulation study is carried out to replicate the complex data structures and conveniently perform our analysis to show its efficacy in terms of parameter estimation. This analysis is further illustrated with the longitudinal and survival outcomes of biomarkers' study by assessing proper codes in R programming language.

Rainblock: Faster Transaction Processing in Public Blockchains

Public blockchains like Ethereum use Merkle trees to verify transactions received from untrusted servers before applying them to the blockchain. We empirically show that the low throughput of such blockchains is due to the I/O bottleneck associated with using Merkle trees for processing transactions. We present RAINBLOCK, a new architecture for public blockchains that increases throughput without affecting security. RAINBLOCK achieves this by tackling the I/O bottleneck on two fronts: first, decoupling transaction processing from I/O, and removing I/O from the critical path; second, reducing I/O amplification by customizing storage for blockchains. RAINBLOCK uses a novel variant of the Merkle tree, the Distributed Sharded Merkle tree (DSM-TREE) to store system state. We evaluate RAINBLOCK using workloads based on public Ethereum traces (including smart contracts) and show that RAINBLOCK processes 20K transactions per second in a geo-distributed setting with four regions spread across three continents.

Dark bubbles: decorating the wall

Motivated by the difficulty of constructing de Sitter vacua in string theory, a new approach was proposed in arXiv:1807.01570 and arXiv:1907.04268, where four dimensional de Sitter space was realized as the effective cosmology, with matter and radiation, on an expanding spherical bubble that mediates the decay of non supersymmetric $AdS_5$ to a more stable $AdS_5$ in string theory. In this third installment, we further expand on this scenario by considering the backreaction of matter in the bulk and on the brane in terms of how the brane bends. We compute the back reacted metric on the bent brane as well as in the five dimensional bulk. To further illuminate the effect of brane-bending, we compare our results with an explicit computation of the five dimensional graviton propagator using a holographic prescription. Finally we comment on a possible localization of four dimensional gravity in our model using two colliding branes.

Classification Algorithm for High Dimensional Protein Markers in Time-course Data

Identification of biomarkers is an emerging area in Oncology. In this article, we develop an efficient statistical procedure for classification of protein markers according to their effect on cancer progression. A high-dimensional time-course dataset of protein markers for 80 patients motivates us for developing the model. We obtain the optimal threshold values for markers using Cox proportional hazard model. The optimal threshold value is defined as a level of a marker having maximum impact on cancer progression. The classification was validated by comparing random components using both proportional hazard and accelerated failure time frailty models. The study elucidates the application of two separate joint modeling techniques using auto regressive-type model and mixed effect model for time-course data and proportional hazard model for survival data with proper utilization of Bayesian methodology. Also, a prognostic score has been developed on the basis of few selected genes with application on patients. The complete analysis is performed by R programming code. This study facilitates to identify relevant biomarkers from a set of markers.

de Sitter Cosmology on an expanding bubble

Constructing an explicit compactification yielding a metastable de Sitter (dS) vacuum in a UV consistent string theory is an incredibly difficult open problem. Motivated by this issue, as well as the conjecture that all non-supersymmetric AdS vacua must decay, we discuss the alternative possibility of realizing an effective four-dimensional dS cosmology on a codimension-one bubble wall separating two AdS$_5$ vacua. The construction further elaborates on the scenario of arXiv:1807.01570, where the aforementioned cosmology arises due to a non-perturbative decay and is embedded in a five-dimensional bulk in a time-dependent way. In this paper we discuss the relation between this scenario and the weak gravity conjecture and further develop the details of the four-dimensional cosmology. We provide a bulk interpretation for the dS temperature as the Unruh temperature experienced by an accelerated observer riding the bubble. A source of four-dimensional matter arises from a string cloud in the bulk, and we examine the consequences for the particle mass spectrum. Furthermore, we show how effective four-dimensional Einstein gravity on the bubble is obtained from the five-dimensional Gauss equation. We conclude by outlining some implications that this paradigm will have for holography, inflation, the standard model, and black holes.

Quenched coupling, entangled equilibria, and correlated composite operators: a tale of two O(N) models

A macroscopic version of Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen entanglement is obtained by quenching a quadratic coupling between two O(N) vector models. A quench of the mixed vacuum produces an excited entangled state, reminiscent of purified thermal equilibrium, whose properties can be studied analytically in the free limit of the individual field theories. The decoupling of different wavelength modes in free field theory prevents true thermalisation but a more subtle difference is that the density operator obtained by a partial trace does not commute with the post-quench Hamiltonian. Generalized thermal behaviour is obtained at late times, in the limit of weak initial mixing or a smooth but rapid quench. More surprisingly, late-time correlation functions of composite operators in the post-quench free field theory share interesting properties with correlators in strongly coupled systems. We propose a holographic interpretation of our result.

A Bound on Thermal Relativistic Correlators at Large Spacelike Momenta

We consider thermal Wightman correlators in a relativistic quantum field theory in the limit where the spatial momenta of the insertions become large while their frequencies stay fixed. We show that, in this limit, the size of these correlators is bounded by $e^{-βR}$, where $R$ is the radius of the smallest sphere that contains the polygon formed by the momenta. We show that perturbative quantum field theories can saturate this bound through suitably high-order loop diagrams. We also consider holographic theories in $d$-spacetime dimensions, where we show that the leading two-point function of generalized free-fields saturates the bound in $d = 2$ and is below the bound for $d > 2$. We briefly discuss interactions in holographic theories and conclude with a discussion of several open problems.

Emergent de Sitter Cosmology from Decaying AdS

Recent developments in string compactifications demonstrate obstructions to the simplest constructions of low energy cosmologies with positive vacuum energy. The existence of obstacles to creating scale-separated de Sitter solutions indicates a UV/IR puzzle for embedding cosmological vacua in a unitary theory of quantum gravity. Motivated by this puzzle, we propose an embedding of positive energy Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker cosmology within string theory. Our proposal involves confining 4D gravity on a brane which mediates the decay from a non-supersymmetric false AdS5 vacuum to a true vacuum. In this way, it is natural for a 4D observer to experience an effective positive cosmological constant coupled to matter and radiation, avoiding the need for scale separation or a fundamental de Sitter vacuum.

Connecting Fisher information to bulk entanglement in holography

In the context of relating AdS/CFT to quantum information theory, we propose a holographic dual of Fisher information metric for mixed states in the boundary field theory. This amounts to a holographic measure for the distance between two mixed quantum states. For a spherical subregion in the boundary we show that this is related to a particularly regularized volume enclosed by the Ryu-Takayanagi surface. We further argue that the quantum correction to the proposed Fisher information metric is related to the quantum correction to the boundary entanglement entropy. We discuss consequences of this connection.

On the universality of late-time correlators in semi-classical 2d CFTs

In the framework of AdS$_3$/ CFT$_2$ correspondence, we present a systematic analysis of the late time thermalization of a two dimensional CFT state created by insertion of small number of heavy operators on the vacuum. We show that at late Lorentzian time, the universal features of this thermalization are solely captured by the eigenvalues of the monodromy matrix corresponding to the solutions of the uniformization equation. We discuss two different ways to extract the monodromy eigenvalues while bypassing the need for finding explicitly the full monodromy matrix - first, using a monodromy preserving diffeomorphism and second using Chen-Simons formulation of gravity in AdS$_3$. Both of the methods yield the same precise relation between the eigenvalues and the final black hole temperature at late Lorentzian time.
