The Clouds in Asynchronous Cellular Automata

This article introduces the notion of clouds in asynchronous cellular automata (ACAs). We show that the cloud behaviour of ACAs has similarity with natural clouds across the sky, election model of parliamentary democratic system, and electron cloud around nucleus. These systems, therefore, can be modelled by the ACAs.

A New Estimation Algorithm for Box-Cox Transformation Cure Rate Model and Comparison With EM Algorithm

In this paper, we develop a new estimation procedure based on the non-linear conjugate gradient (NCG) algorithm for the Box-Cox transformation cure rate model. We compare the performance of the NCG algorithm with the well-known expectation maximization (EM) algorithm through a simulation study and show the advantages of the NCG algorithm over the EM algorithm. In particular, we show that the NCG algorithm allows simultaneous maximization of all model parameters when the likelihood surface is flat with respect to a Box-Cox model parameter. This is a big advantage over the EM algorithm, where a profile likelihood approach has been proposed in the literature that may not provide satisfactory results. We finally use the NCG algorithm to analyze a well-known melanoma data and show that it results in a better fit.

A theoretical investigation of Brockett's ensemble optimal control problems

This paper is devoted to the analysis of problems of optimal control of ensembles governed by the Liouville (or continuity) equation. The formulation and study of these problems have been put forward in recent years by R.W. Brockett, with the motivation that ensemble control may provide a more general and robust control framework. Following Brockett's formulation of ensemble control, a Liouville equation with unbounded drift function, and a class of cost functionals that include tracking of ensembles and different control costs is considered. For the theoretical investigation of the resulting optimal control problems, a well-posedness theory in weighted Sobolev spaces is presented for the Liouville and transport equations. Then, a class of non-smooth optimal control problems governed by the Liouville equation is formulated and existence of optimal controls is proved. Furthermore, optimal controls are characterised as solutions to optimality systems; such a characterisation is the key to get (under suitable assumptions) also uniqueness of optimal controls.

How to place an obstacle having a dihedral symmetry centered at a given point inside a disk so as to optimize the fundamental Dirichlet eigenvalue

A generic model for the shape optimization problems we consider in this paper is the optimization of the Dirichlet eigenvalues of the Laplace operator with a volume constraint. We deal with an obstacle placement problem which can be formulated as the following eigenvalue optimization problem: Fix two positive real numbers $r_1$ and $A$. We consider a disk $B\subset \mathbb{R}^2$ having radius $r_1$. We want to place an obstacle $P$ of area $A$ within $B$ so as to maximize or minimize the fundamental Dirichlet eigenvalue $λ_1$ for the Laplacian on $B\setminus P$. That is, we want to study the behavior of the function $ρ\mapsto λ_1(B\setminusρ(P))$, where $ρ$ runs over the set of all rigid motions of the plane fixing the center of mass for $P$ such that $ρ(P)\subset B$. In this paper, we consider a non-concentric obstacle placement problem. The extremal configurations correspond to the cases where an axis of symmetry of $P$ coincide with an axis of symmetry of $B$. We also characterize the maximizing and the minimizing configurations in our main result, viz., Theorem 4.1. Equation (6), Propositions 5.1 and 5.2 imply Theorem 4.1. We give many different generalizations of our result. At the end, we provide some numerical evidence to validate our main theorem for the case where the obstacle $P$ has $\mathbb{D}_4$ symmetry. For the $n$ odd case, we identify some of the extremal configuration for $λ_1$. We prove that equation (6) and Proposition 5.1 hold true for $n$ odd too. We highlight some of the difficulties faced in proving Proposition 5.2 for this case. We provide numerical evidence for $n=5$ and conjecture that Theorem 4.1 holds true for $n$ odd too.

A fully non-linear optimization approach to acousto-electric tomography

This paper considers the non-linear inverse problem of reconstructing an electric conductivity distribution from the interior power density in a bounded domain. Applications include the novel tomographic method known as acousto-electric tomography, in which the measurement setup in Electrical Impedance Tomography is modulated by ultrasonic waves thus giving rise to a method potentially having both high contrast and high resolution. We formulate the inverse problem as a regularized non-linear optimization problem, show the existence of a minimizer, and derive optimality conditions. We propose a non-linear conjugate gradient scheme for finding a minimizer based on the optimality conditions. All our numerical experiments are done in two-dimensions. The experiments reveal new insight into the non-linear effects in the reconstruction. One of the interesting features we observe is that, depending on the choice of regularization, there is a trade-off between high resolution and high contrast in the reconstructed images. Our proposed non-linear optimization framework can be generalized to other hybrid imaging modalities.

A Survey of Cellular Automata: Types, Dynamics, Non-uniformity and Applications

Cellular automata (CAs) are dynamical systems which exhibit complex global behavior from simple local interaction and computation. Since the inception of cellular automaton (CA) by von Neumann in 1950s, it has attracted the attention of several researchers over various backgrounds and fields for modelling different physical, natural as well as real-life phenomena. Classically, CAs are uniform. However, non-uniformity has also been introduced in update pattern, lattice structure, neighborhood dependency and local rule. In this survey, we tour to the various types of CAs introduced till date, the different characterization tools, the global behaviors of CAs, like universality, reversibility, dynamics etc. Special attention is given to non-uniformity in CAs and especially to non-uniform elementary CAs, which have been very useful in solving several real-life problems.

Image reconstruction from radially incomplete spherical Radon data

We study inversion of the spherical Radon transform with centers on a sphere (the data acquisition set). Such inversions are essential in various image reconstruction problems arising in medical, radar and sonar imaging. In the case of radially incomplete data, we show that the spherical Radon transform can be uniquely inverted recovering the image function in spherical shells. Our result is valid when the support of the image function is inside the data acquisition sphere, outside that sphere, as well as on both sides of the sphere. Furthermore, in addition to the uniqueness result our method of proof provides reconstruction formulas for all those cases. We present a robust computational algorithm based on our inversion formula and demonstrate its accuracy and efficiency on several numerical examples.

Numerical inversion of a broken ray transform arising in single scattering optical tomography

The article presents an efficient image reconstruction algorithm for single scattering optical tomography (SSOT) in circular geometry of data acquisition. This novel medical imaging modality uses photons of light that scatter once in the body to recover its interior features. The mathematical model of SSOT is based on the broken ray (or V-line Radon) transform (BRT), which puts into correspondence to an image function its integrals along V-shaped piecewise linear trajectories. The process of image reconstruction in SSOT requires inversion of that transform. We implement numerical inversion of a broken ray transform in a disc with partial radial data. Our method is based on a relation between the Fourier coefficients of the image function and those of its BRT recently discovered by Ambartsoumian and Moon. The numerical algorithm requires solution of ill-conditioned matrix problems, which is accomplished using a half-rank truncated singular value decomposition method. Several numerical computations validating the inversion formula are presented, which demonstrate the accuracy, speed and robustness of our method in the case of both noise-free and noisy data.

Asynchronous Cellular Automata and Pattern Classification

This paper designs an efficient two-class pattern classifier utilizing asynchronous cellular automata (ACAs). The two-state three-neighborhood one-dimensional ACAs that converge to fixed points from arbitrary seeds are used here for pattern classification. To design the classifier, we first identify a set of ACAs that always converge to fixed points from any seeds with following properties - (1) each ACA should have at least two but not huge number of fixed point attractors, and (2) the convergence time of these ACAs are not to be exponential. In order to address the first issue, we propose a graph, coined as fixed point graph of an ACA that facilitates in counting the fixed points. We further perform an experimental study to estimate the convergence time of ACAs, and find that there are some convergent ACAs which demand exponential convergence time. Finally, we find that there are 71 (out of 256) ACAs which can be effective candidates as pattern classifier. We use each of the candidate ACAs on some standard data sets, and observe the effectiveness of each ACAs as pattern classifier. It is observed that the proposed classifier is very competitive and performs reliably better than many standard existing algorithms.
