On triple product $L$-functions and the fiber bundle method

We introduce multi-variable zeta integrals which unfold to Euler products representing the triple product $L$-function times a product of $L$-functions with known analytic properties. We then formulate a generalization of the Poisson summation conjecture and show how it implies the analytic properties of triple product $L$-functions. Finally, we propose a strategy, the fiber bundle method, to reduce this generalized conjecture to a simpler case of the Poisson summation conjecture along with certain local compatibility statements.

Unitary Friedberg-Jacquet periods and their twists: Relative trace formulas

In a companion paper, we formulated a global conjecture for the automorphic period integral associated to the symmetric pairs defined by unitary groups over number fields, generalizing a theorem of Waldspurger's toric period for $\mathrm{GL}(2)$. In this paper, we introduce a new relative trace formula to prove our global conjecture under some local hypotheses. A new feature is the presence of relative endoscopy in the comparison. We also establish several local results on relative characters.

The endoscopic fundamental lemma for unitary Friedberg-Jacquet periods

We prove the endoscopic fundamental lemma for the Lie algebra of the symmetric space $U(2n)/U(n)\times U(n)$, where $U(n)$ denotes a unitary group of rank $n$. This is the first major step in the stabilization of the relative trace formula associated to the $U(n)\times U(n)$-periods of automorphic forms on $U(2n)$.

Unitary Friedberg-Jacquet periods and their twists: Fundamental lemmas

We formulate a global conjecture for the automorphic period integral associated to the symmetric pairs defined by unitary groups over number fields, generalizing a theorem of Waldspurger's toric period for $\mathrm{GL}(2)$. We introduce a new relative trace formula to prove our global conjecture under some local hypotheses. A new feature is the presence of the relative endoscopy. In this paper we prove the main local theorem: a new relative fundamental lemma comparing certain orbital integrals of functions matched in terms of Hironaka and Satake transforms.

Symmetric varieties for endoscopic groups

Given a quasi-split reductive group $G$ and a symmetric variety $X$, we introduce a notion of endoscopic varieties for $(G,X)$, and establish the foundational properties of these varieties such as matching of stable semi-simple orbits. To do this, we introduce certain automorphism groups of homogeneous spherical varieties, which encode the fine rational structure needed to work over non-algebraically closed fields. In particular, we establish the existence and uniqueness of the corresponding symmetric varieties under a mild restriction of the characteristic of the field of definition. We conjecture that this construction plays a role analogous to endoscopic groups in the context of the relative trace formula. As evidence, we show how our construction gives a pre-stabilization of regular elliptic terms of relative trace formulae for many pairs $(G,X)$. When the cotangent bundle of the symmetric variety is hyperspherical, we relate our theory to the Hamiltonian variety of the Langlands dual group introduced by Ben-Zvi, Sakellaridis, and Venkatesh, proving some structural conjectures for this variety in the symmetric setting.

Harmonic analysis on certain spherical varieties

Braverman and Kazhdan proposed a conjecture, later refined by Ngô and broadened to the framework of spherical varieties by Sakellaridis, that asserts that affine spherical varieties admit Schwartz spaces, Fourier transforms, and Poisson summation formulae. The first author in joint work with B.~Liu and later the first two authors proved these conjectures for certain spherical varieties $Y$ built out of triples of quadratic spaces. However, in these works the Fourier transform was only proven to exist. In the present paper we give, for the first time, an explicit formula for the Fourier transform on $Y.$ We also prove that it is unitary in the nonarchimedean case. As preparation for this result, we give explicit formulae for Fourier transforms on Braverman-Kazhdan spaces attached to maximal parabolic subgroups of split, simple, simply connected groups. These Fourier transforms are of independent interest, for example, from the point of view of analytic number theory.

Modular forms of half-integral weight on exceptional groups

We define a notion of modular forms of half-integral weight on the quaternionic exceptional groups. We prove that they have a well-behaved notion of Fourier coefficients, which are complex numbers defined up to multiplication by $\pm 1$. We analyze the minimal modular form $Θ_{F_4}$ on the double cover of $F_4$, following Loke--Savin and Ginzburg. Using $Θ_{F_4}$, we define a modular form of weight $\frac{1}{2}$ on (the double cover of) $G_2$. We prove that the Fourier coefficients of this modular form on $G_2$ see the $2$-torsion in the narrow class groups of totally real cubic fields.

On the stabilization of relative trace formulae: descent and the fundamental lemma

Motivated by the study of periods of automorphic forms and relative trace formulae, we develop the theory of descent necessary to study orbital integrals arising in the fundamental lemma for a general class of symmetric spaces over a $p$-adic field $F$. More precisely, we prove that a connected symmetric space over $F$ enjoys a notion of topological Jordan decomposition, which may be of independent interest, and establish a relative version of a lemma of Kazhdan that played a crucial role in the proof of the Langlands-Shelstad fundamental lemma. As our main application, we use these results to prove the endoscopic fundamental lemma for the unit element of the Hecke algebra for the symmetric space associated to unitary Friedberg-Jacquet periods.

Parity Sheaves and Smith Theory

Let $p$ be a prime number and let $X$ be a complex algebraic variety with an action of $\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}$. We develop the theory of parity complexes in a certain $2$-periodic localization of the equivariant constructible derived category $D^b_{\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}}(X,\mathbb{Z}_p)$. Under certain assumptions, we use this to define a functor from the category of parity sheaves on $X$ to the category of parity sheaves on the fixed-point locus $X^{\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}}$. This may be thought of as a categorification of Smith theory. When $X$ is the affine Grassmannian associated to some complex reductive group, our functor gives a geometric construction of the Frobenius-contraction functor recently defined by M. Gros and M. Kaneda via the geometric Satake equivalence.

An analogue of the Grothendieck-Springer resolution for symmetric spaces

Motivated by questions in the study of relative trace formulae, we construct a generalization of Grothendieck's simultaneous resolution over the regular locus of certain symmetric pairs. We use this space to prove a relative version of results of Donagi and Gaitsgory about the automorphism sheaf of regular stabilizers. We also obtain partial results toward applications in Springer theory for symmetric spaces.

Endoscopy for unitary symmetric spaces

Motivated by global applications, we propose a theory of relative endoscopic data and transfer factors for the symmetric pair $(U(2n),U(n)\times U(n))$ over a local field. We then formulate the smooth transfer conjecture and fundamental lemma, establish the existence of smooth transfer for many test functions, and prove the fundamental lemma for the symmetric pair $(U(4),U(2)\times U(2))$.

Resonant Mirković-Vilonen polytopes and formulas for highest-weight characters

Formulas for the product of an irreducible character $χ_λ$ of a complex Lie group and a deformation of the Weyl denominator as a sum over the crystal $\mathcal{B}(λ+ρ)$ go back to Tokuyama. We study the geometry underlying such formulas using the expansion of spherical Whittaker functions of $p$-adic groups as a sum over the canonical basis $\mathcal{B}(-\infty)$, which we show may be understood as arising from tropicalization of certain toric charts that appear in the theory of total positivity and cluster algebras. We use this to express the terms of the expansion in terms of the corresponding Mirković-Vilonen polytope. In this non-archimedean setting, we identify resonance as the appropriate analogue of total positivity, and introduce \emph{resonant Mirković-Vilonen polytopes} as the corresponding geometric context. Focusing on the exceptional group $G_2$, we show that these polytopes carry new crystal graph structures which we use to compute a new Tokuyama-type formula as a sum over $\mathcal{B}(λ+ρ)$ plus a geometric error term coming from finitely many crystals of resonant polytopes.

A Generalized Theta lifting, CAP representations, and Arthur parameters

We study a new lifting of automorphic representations using the theta representation $Θ$ on the $4$-fold cover of the symplectic group, $\overline{\mathrm{Sp}}_{2r}(\mathbb{A})$. This lifting produces the first examples of CAP representations on higher-degree metaplectic covering groups. Central to our analysis is the identification of the maximal nilpotent orbit associated to $Θ$. We conjecture a natural extension of Arthur's parameterization of the discrete spectrum to $\overline{\mathrm{Sp}}_{2r}(\mathbb{A})$. Assuming this, we compute the effect of our lift on Arthur parameters and show that the parameter of a representation in the image of the lift is non-tempered. We conclude by relating the lifting to the dimension equation of Ginzburg to predict the first non-trivial lift of a generic cuspidal representation of $\overline{\mathrm{Sp}}_{2r}(\mathbb{A})$.
