A new construction of compact torsion-free $G_2$-manifolds by gluing families of Eguchi-Hanson spaces

We give a new construction of compact Riemannian 7-manifolds with holonomy $G_2$. Let $M$ be a torsion-free $G_2$-manifold (which can have holonomy a proper subgroup of $G_2$) such that $M$ admits an involution $ι$ preserving the $G_2$-structure. Then $M/{\langle ι\rangle}$ is a $G_2$-orbifold, with singular set $L$ an associative submanifold of $M$, where the singularities are locally of the form $\mathbb R^3 \times (\mathbb R^4 / \{\pm 1\})$. We resolve this orbifold by gluing in a family of Eguchi-Hanson spaces, parametrized by a nonvanishing closed and coclosed $1$-form $λ$ on $L$. Much of the analytic difficulty lies in constructing appropriate closed $G_2$-structures with sufficiently small torsion to be able to apply the general existence theorem of the first author. In particular, the construction involves solving a family of elliptic equations on the noncompact Eguchi-Hanson space, parametrized by the singular set $L$. We also present two generalizations of the main theorem, and we discuss several methods of producing examples from this construction.

Introduction to $\mathrm{G}_2$ geometry

These notes give an informal and leisurely introduction to $\mathrm{G}_2$ geometry for beginners. A special emphasis is placed on understanding the special linear algebraic structure in $7$ dimensions that is the pointwise model for $\mathrm{G}_2$ geometry, using the octonions. The basics of $\mathrm{G}_2$-structures are introduced, from a Riemannian geometric point of view, including a discussion of the torsion and its relation to curvature for a general $\mathrm{G}_2$-structure, as well as the connection to Riemannian holonomy. The history and properties of torsion-free $\mathrm{G}_2$ manifolds are considered, and we stress the similarities and differences with Kahler and Calabi-Yau manifolds. The notes end with a brief survey of three important theorems about compact torsion-free $\mathrm{G}_2$ manifolds.

A gradient flow of isometric $\mathrm{G}_2$ structures

We study a flow of $G_2$ structures which induce the same Riemannian metric which is the negative gradient flow of an energy functional. We prove Shi-type estimates for the torsion tensor along the flow. We show that at a finite-time singularity the torsion must blow-up, so the flow exists as long as the torsion remains bounded. We prove a Cheeger-Gromov type compactness theorem for the flow. We describe an Uhlenbeck-type trick which together with a modification of the connection gives a nice diffusion-reaction equation for the torsion along the flow. We define a quantity for any solution of the flow and prove that it is almost monotonic along the flow. Inspired by the work of Colding-Minicozzi on the mean curvature flow, we define an entropy functional and after proving an $ε$-regularity theorem, we show that low entropy initial data lead to solutions of the flow which exist for all time and converge smoothly to a $G_2$ structure with divergence free torsion. We also study the finite-time singularities and show that at the singular time the flow converges to a smooth $G_2$ structure outside a closed set of finite 5-dimensional Hausdorff measure. Finally, we prove that if the singularity is of Type-I then a sequence of blow-ups of a solution has a subsequence which converges to a shrinking soliton for the flow.

Deformations of G_2 and Spin(7) Structures on Manifolds

We consider some infinitesmal and global deformations of G_2 structures on 7-manifolds. We discover a canonical way to deform a G_2 structure by a vector field in which the associated metric gets "twisted" in some way by the vector cross product. We present a system of partial differential equations for an unknown vector field whose solution would yield a manifold with holonomy G_2. Similarly we consider analogous constructions for Spin(7) structures on 8-manifolds. Some of the results carry over directly, while others do not because of the increased non-linearity of the Spin(7) case.

The $\mathcal L_B$-cohomology on compact torsion-free $\mathrm{G}_2$ manifolds and an application to 'almost' formality

We study a cohomology theory $H^{\bullet}_φ$, called the $\mathcal L_B$-cohomology, on compact torsion-free $\mathrm{G}_2$-manifolds. We show that $H^k_φ \cong H^k_{\mathrm{dR}}$ for $k \neq 3, 4$, but that $H^k_φ$ is infinite-dimensional for $k = 3,4$. Nevertheless there is a canonical injection $H^k_{\mathrm{dR}} \to H^k_φ$. The $\mathcal L_B$-cohomology also satisfies a Poincaré duality induced by the Hodge star. The establishment of these results requires a delicate analysis of the interplay between the exterior derivative $\mathrm{d}$ and the derivation $\mathcal L_B$, and uses both Hodge theory and the special properties of $\mathrm{G}_2$-structures in an essential way. As an application of our results, we prove that compact torsion-free $\mathrm{G}_2$-manifolds are 'almost formal' in the sense that most of the Massey triple products necessarily must vanish.

Soliton solutions for the Laplacian coflow of some $G_2$-structures with symmetry

We consider the Laplacian "co-flow" of $G_2$-structures: $\frac{d}{dt} ψ= - Δ_d ψ$ where $ψ$ is the dual 4-form of a $G_2$-structure $ϕ$ and $Δ_d$ is the Hodge Laplacian on forms. This flow preserves the condition of the $G_2$-structure being coclosed ($dψ=0$). We study this flow for two explicit examples of coclosed $G_2$-structures with symmetry. These are given by warped products of an interval or a circle with a compact 6-manifold $N$ which is taken to be either a nearly Kähler manifold or a Calabi-Yau manifold. In both cases, we derive the flow equations and also the equations for soliton solutions. In the Calabi-Yau case, we find all the soliton solutions explicitly. In the nearly Kähler case, we find several special soliton solutions, and reduce the general problem to a single \emph{third order} highly nonlinear ordinary differential equation.

Deformations of calibrated subbundles of Euclidean spaces via twisting by special sections

We extend the "bundle constructions" of calibrated submanifolds, due to Harvey--Lawson in the special Lagrangian case, and to Ionel--Karigiannis--Min-Oo in the cases of exceptional calibrations, by "twisting" the bundles by a special (harmonic, holomorphic, parallel) section of a complementary bundle. The existence of such deformations shows that the moduli space of calibrated deformations of these "calibrated subbundles" includes deformations which destroy the linear structure of the fibre.

What is... a G_2 manifold?

This is a very short and elementary introduction to G_2 manifolds. We stress the similarities and the differences with Kähler manifolds in general and with Calabi-Yau manifolds in particular.

Hodge Theory for G2-manifolds: Intermediate Jacobians and Abel-Jacobi maps

We study the moduli space of torsion-free G2-structures on a fixed compact manifold, and define its associated universal intermediate Jacobian J. We define the Yukawa coupling and relate it to a natural pseudo-Kahler structure on J. We consider natural Chern-Simons type functionals, whose critical points give associative and coassociative cycles (calibrated submanifolds coupled with Yang-Mills connections), and also deformed Donaldson-Thomas connections. We show that the moduli spaces of these structures can be isotropically immersed in J by means of G2-analogues of Abel-Jacobi maps.

Desingularization of G_2 manifolds with isolated conical singularities

We present a method to desingularize a compact G_2 manifold with isolated conical singularities by cutting out a neighbourhood of each singular point and glueing in an asymptotically conical G_2 manifold. Controlling the error on the overlap glueing region enables us to use a result of Joyce to conclude that the resulting compact smooth 7-manifold admits a torsion-free G_2 structure, with full G_2 holonomy. There are topological obstructions for this procedure to work, which arise from the degree 3 and degree 4 cohomology of the asymptotically conical G_2 manifolds which are glued in at each conical singularity. When a certain necessary topological condition on the manifold with isolated conical singularities is satisfied, we can introduce correction terms to the glueing procedure to ensure that it still works. In the case of degree 4 obstructions, these correction terms are trivial to construct, but in the case of degree 3 obstructions we need to solve an elliptic equation on a non-compact manifold. For this we use the Lockhart-McOwen theory of weighted Sobolev spaces on manifolds with ends. This theory is also used to obtain a good asymptotic expansion of the G_2 structure on an asymptotically conical G_2 manifold under an appropriate gauge-fixing condition, which is required to make the glueing procedure work.

Some Notes on G_2 and Spin(7) Geometry

We collect together various facts about G_2 and Spin(7) geometry which are likely well known but which do not seem to have appeared explicitly in the literature before. These notes should be useful to graduate students and new researchers in G_2 and Spin(7) geometry.

Flows of G_2 Structures, I

This is a foundational paper on flows of G_2 Structures. We use local coordinates to describe the four torsion forms of a G_2 Structure and derive the evolution equations for a general flow of a G_2 Structure on a 7-manifold. Specifically, we compute the evolution of the metric, the dual 4-form, and the four independent torsion forms. In the process we obtain a simple new proof of a theorem of Fernandez-Gray. As an application of our evolution equations, we derive an analogue of the second Bianchi identity in G_2-geometry which appears to be new, at least in this form. We use this result to derive explicit formulas for the Ricci tensor and part of the Riemann curvature tensor in terms of the torsion. These in turn lead to new proofs of several known results in G_2 geometry.

Flows of Spin(7)-structures

We consider flows of Spin(7)-structures. We use local coordinates to describe the torsion tensor of a Spin(7)-structure and derive the evolution equations for a general flow of a Spin(7)-structure on an 8-manifold M. Specifically, we compute the evolution of the metric and the torsion tensor. We also give an explicit description of the decomposition of the space of forms on a manifold with Spin(7)-structure, and derive an analogue of the second Bianchi identity in Spin(7)-geometry. This identity yields an explicit formula for the Ricci tensor and part of the Riemann curvature tensor in terms of the torsion.

Bundle Constructions of Calibrated Submanifolds in R^7 and R^8

We construct calibrated submanifolds of R^7 and R^8 by viewing them as total spaces of vector bundles and taking appropriate sub-bundles which are naturally defined using certain surfaces in R^4. We construct examples of associative and coassociative submanifolds of R^7 and of Cayley submanifolds of R^8. This construction is a generalization of the Harvey-Lawson bundle construction of special Lagrangian submanifolds of R^{2n}.

Calibrated Sub-Bundles in Non-Compact Manifolds of Special Holonomy

This paper is a continuation of math.DG/0408005. We first construct special Lagrangian submanifolds of the Ricci-flat Stenzel metric (of holonomy SU(n)) on the cotangent bundle of S^n by looking at the conormal bundle of appropriate submanifolds of S^n. We find that the condition for the conormal bundle to be special Lagrangian is the same as that discovered by Harvey-Lawson for submanifolds in R^n in their pioneering paper. We also construct calibrated submanifolds in complete metrics with special holonomy G_2 and Spin(7) discovered by Bryant and Salamon on the total spaces of appropriate bundles over self-dual Einstein four manifolds. The submanifolds are constructed as certain subbundles over immersed surfaces. We show that this construction requires the surface to be minimal in the associative and Cayley cases, and to be (properly oriented) real isotropic in the coassociative case. We also make some remarks about using these constructions as a possible local model for the intersection of compact calibrated submanifolds in a compact manifold with special holonomy.
