The stress-energy distributional multipole for both uncharged and charged dust

In this paper, we formulate the distributional uncharged and charged stress-energy tensors. These are integrals, along a worldline, of derivatives of the delta-function. These distributions are also multipoles and they are prescribed to any order. They represent an extended region of non-self-interacting uncharged or charged dust, shrunken to a single point in space. We show that the uncharged dust stress-energy multipole is divergence-free, while the divergence of the charged dust stress-energy multipole is given by the current and the external electromagnetic field. We show that they can be obtained by squeezing a regular dust stress-energy tensor onto the worldine. We discuss the aforementioned calculations in a coordinate-free manner.

Qiskit Quantum Circuits Posit Singlet state in Radical Pair-based Magnetoreception of Migratory Birds

Quantum computing applications in diverse domains are emerging rapidly. Given the limitations of classical computing techniques, the peculiarity of quantum circuits, which can observe quantum phenomena such as superposition, entanglement, and quantum coherence, is remarkable. This capability enables them to achieve measurement sensitivities far beyond classical limits. Research on radical pair-based magnetoreception in migratory birds has been a focus area for quite some time. A quantum mechanics-based computing approach, thus unsurprisingly, identifies a scope of application. In this study, to observe the phenomenon, electron-nucleus spin quantum circuits for different geomagnetic fluxes have been simulated and run through IBM Qiskit quantum processing units with error mitigation techniques. The results of different quantum states are consistent, suggesting singlet-triplet mechanisms that can be emulated, resembling the environment-enabling flights of migratory birds through generations of the avian species. The four-qubit model emulating electron-nucleus systems mimicking the environmental complexity outcome shows the sensitiveness to change of magnetic flux index, high probability of singlet-triplet dynamics, and upholding radical pair model states by the purity of the sub-system and full system outcome of coherence, the hallmark of singlet state dominance. The work involved performing fifty quantum circuits for different magnetic field values, each with one thousand and twenty-four shots for measurement, either in the simulator or on real quantum hardware, and for two error mitigation techniques, preceded by a noise model of a simulator run.

The tensorial representation of the distributional stress-energy quadrupole and its dynamics

We investigate stress-energy tensors constructed from the covariant derivatives of delta functions on a worldline. Since covariant derivatives are used all the components transform as tensors. We derive the dynamical equations for the components, up to quadrupole order. The components do, however, depend in a non-tensorial way, on a choice of a vector along the worldline. We also derive a number of important results about general multipoles, including that their components are unique, and all multipoles can be written using covariant derivatives. We show how the components of a multipole are related to standard moments of a tensor field, by parallelly transporting that tensor field.

The Distributional Stress-Energy Quadrupole

We investigate stress-energy tensors constructed from the delta function on a worldline. We concentrate on quadrupoles as they make an excellent model for the dominant source of gravitational waves and have significant novel features. Unlike the dipole, we show that the quadrupole has 20 free components which are not determined by the properties of the stress-energy tensor. These need to be derived from an underlying model and we give an example motivated from a divergent-free dust. We show that the components corresponding to the partial derivatives representation of the quadrupole, have a gauge like freedom. We give the change of coordinate formula which involves second derivatives and two integrals. We also show how to define the quadrupole without reference to a coordinate systems or a metric. For the representation using covariant derivatives, we show how to split a quadrupole into a pure monopole, pure dipole and pure quadrupole in a coordinate free way.

Unitarity in Infinite Derivative Theories

In this paper, we consider an infinite derivative scalar field action with infinite derivative kinetic and interaction terms. We establish that the theory is unitary if the correlation functions are formulated in Euclidean space and then analytically continued in their external momenta to Minkowski space.

Slavnov Identities for Infinite Derivative Theory of Gravity

In this paper, we shall consider an infinite-derivative theory of gravity, with a view to making it renormalisable. First, we derive the modified superficial degree of divergence. Next, we establish that the theory is invariant under BRS (Becchi-Rouet-Stora) transformations. Consequently, we show that the corresponding Slavnov identities hold for the theory. Finally, we summarise our results and discuss renormalisability.

Hamiltonian Analysis for Infinite Derivative Field Theories and Gravity

Typically higher-derivative theories are unstable. Instabilities manifest themselves from extra propagating degrees of freedom, which are unphysical. In this paper, we will investigate an infinite derivative field theory and study its true dynamical degrees of freedom via Hamiltonian analysis. In particular, we will show that if the infinite derivatives can be captured by a Gaussian kinetic term, i.e. exponential of entire function, then it is possible to prove that there are only finite number of dynamical degrees of freedom. We will further extend our investigation into infinite derivative theory of gravity, and in particular concentrate on ghost free and singularity free theory of gravity, which has been studied extensively in the Lagrangian approach. Here we will show from the Hamiltonian perspective that there are only finite number of degrees of freedom.

Towards UV Finiteness of Infinite Derivative Theories of Gravity and Field Theories

In this paper we will consider the ultraviolet (UV) finiteness of the most general one-particle irreducible ($1$PI) Feynman diagrams within the context of ghost-free, infinite-derivative scalar toy model, which is inspired from ghost free and singularity-free infinite-derivative theory of gravity. We will show that by using dressed vertices and dressed propagators, $n$-loop, $N$-point diagrams constructed out of lower-loop $2$- & $3$-point and, in general, $N_i$-point diagrams are UV finite with respect to internal and external loop momentum. Moreover, we will demonstrate that the external momentum dependences of the $n$-loop, $N$-point diagrams constructed out of lower-loop $2$- & $3$-point and, in general, $N_i$-point diagrams decrease exponentially as the loop-order increases and the external momentum divergences are eliminated at sufficiently high loop-order.

Scale of non-locality for a system of $n$ particles

Higher derivative theories of gravity are associated with a mass scale to insure the correct dimensionality of the covariant derivatives. This mass scale is known as the scale of non-locality. In this paper, by considering a higher derivative toy model, we show that for a system of $n$ particles the effective mass scale is inversely proportional to the square root of the number of particles. We demonstrate that as the number of particles increases the corresponding effective mass scale associated with the scattering amplitude decreases.

Rotating black hole and entropy for modified theories of gravity

In this paper we obtain the entropy of the Kerr black hole for a number of modified theories of gravity. We show that as long as the deviation from Einstein Hilbert term consists purely of terms involving scalar curvature and Ricci tensor, the entropy is solely given by the area law. However, the area law will be modified by appropriate corrections when we consider terms involving Riemann tensor explicitly.

Quantum Loops in Non-Local Gravity

In this proceedings, I will consider quantum aspects of a non-local, infinite-derivative scalar field theory - a ${\it toy \, model}$ depiction of a covariant infinite-derivative, non-local extension of Einstein's general relativity which has previously been shown to be free from ghosts around the Minkowski background. The graviton propagator in this theory gets an exponential suppression making it ${\it asymptotically \, free}$, thus providing strong prospects of resolving various classical and quantum divergences. In particular, I will find that at $1$-loop, the $2$-point function is still divergent, but once this amplitude is renormalized by adding appropriate counter terms, the ultraviolet (UV) behavior of all other $1$-loop diagrams as well as the $2$-loop, $2$-point function remains well under control. I will go on to discuss how one may be able to generalize our computations and arguments to arbitrary loops.

High-Energy Scatterings in Infinite-Derivative Field Theory and Ghost-Free Gravity

In this paper, we will consider scattering diagrams in the context of infinite-derivative theories. First, we examine a finite-order higher-derivative scalar field theory and find that we cannot eliminate the external momentum divergences of scattering diagrams in the regime of large external momenta. Then, we employ an infinite-derivative scalar toy model and obtain that the external momentum dependence of scattering diagrams is convergent as the external momenta become very large. In order to eliminate the external momentum divergences, one has to dress the bare vertices of the scattering diagrams by considering renormalised propagator and vertex loop corrections to the bare vertices. Finally, we investigate scattering diagrams in the context of a scalar toy model which is inspired by a $\mathit{ghost-free}$ and $\mathit{singularity-free}$ infinite-derivative theory of gravity, where we conclude that infinite derivatives can eliminate the external momentum divergences of scattering diagrams and make the scattering diagrams convergent in the ultraviolet.

Generalised Boundary Terms for Higher Derivative Theories of Gravity

In this paper we wish to find the corresponding Gibbons-Hawking-York term for the most general quadratic in curvature gravity by using Coframe slicing within the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner (ADM) decomposition of spacetime in four dimensions. In order to make sure that the higher derivative gravity is ghost and tachyon free at a perturbative level, one requires infinite covariant derivatives, which yields a generalised covariant infinite derivative theory of gravity. We will be exploring the boundary term for such a covariant infinite derivative theory of gravity.

Non-local gravity in D-dimensions: Propagator, entropy and bouncing Cosmology

We present the graviton propagator for an infinite derivative, $D$-dimensional, non-local action, up to quadratic order in curvature around a Minkowski background, and discuss the conditions required for this class of gravity theory to be ghost-free. We then study the gravitational entropy for de-Sitter and Anti-de Sitter backgrounds, before comparing with a recently derived result for a Schwarzschild blackhole, generalised to arbitrary $D$-dimensions, whereby the entropy is given simply by the area law. A novel approach of decomposing the entropy into its $(r, t)$ and spherical components is adopted in order to illustrate the differences more clearly. We conclude with a discussion of de-Sitter entropy in the framework of a non-singular bouncing cosmology.

Projecting the graviton to probe higher or lower dimensions

In this paper, we will discuss how in Einstein's theory a graviton can be enforced to probe fewer space-time dimensions in the deep ultraviolet (UV) as compared to far infrared (IR), and vice-versa. In particular, from a $D$ dimensional gravitational action in the IR we can project the $D$ dimensional graviton to probe only $2\leq N\leq D-1$ dimensions in the deep UV. Such projections of a graviton propagator can be thought of as an alternative to compactification. We will briefly explain the physical interpretation and consequences of such a dimensional transmutation.

String-Inspired Infinite-Derivative Theories of Gravity: A Brief Overview

In String Theory there often appears a rather interesting class of higher derivative theories containing an infinite set of derivatives in the form of an exponential. These theories may provide a way to tame ultraviolet divergences without introducing ghost-like states. In this invited article we provide a brief overview on the progress that has been made over the last decade to construct such infinite derivative theories of gravity which may be able to address the singularity problems in gravity. In the process we will also be able to present some general results that applies to covariant torsion-free metric theories of gravity.
