Steady weak solutions to an inflow/outflow driven compressible fluid-structure interaction problem

We study a stationary 3D/2D fluid-structure interaction problem between an elastic structure described by the linear plate equation and a fluid described by the compressible Navier-Stokes equations with hard-sphere pressure and inflow/outflow boundary data. This problem is motivated by wind-tunnel configuration and by the need for physically relevant steady states about which compressible flow-plate dynamics can be linearized. The main difficulty in the analysis is the lack of uniform estimates, both for approximate and weak solutions. In particular, the fixed-point construction for approximate solution yields a density estimate depending on approximate parameter, while the pressure estimate for the weak solution is only finite and non-quantifiable. As a result, large pressure loads can drive outward volume growth, while low pressure regions may lead to contact and therefore domain degeneration. This necessitates a novel approach based on a Lipschitz \emph{domain-correction} (barrier) mechanism that provides a framework in which solutions can be constructed without volume blow-up or degeneration of the domain. Constrained by the possibly very large fluid pressure load, our main result is the existence of a weak solution for a sufficiently large plate stiffness. Contact in fluid-plate interaction: formation and detachment

In this paper, we study an interaction problem between an elastic plate and a compressible viscous fluid located between the rigid bottom $z=0$ and the plate. First, by utilizing the vertical fluid dissipation, we show that $\lnη(t) \in L^1$ for any $t>0$ provided that $\lnη_0\in L^1$, ensuring that additional plate contact can form only on a set of a measure zero. Then, by utilizing the expanding capability of compressible fluid pressure, we show that all contact has to detach in finite time provided that the source force acting onto the plate is not pushing down excessively. Finally, we show that contact at any point can be detached in any given time with a strong enough source force localized around that point which is pulling the plate up. The results are based on a novel variational inequality which preserves key information about the total force applied onto the plate, even in presence of contact. This is the first result where detachment of contact is proven in fluid-structure interaction.

Analysis of an Inelastic Contact Problem for the Damped Wave Equation

In this paper, we examine the dynamic behavior of a viscoelastic string oscillating above a rigid obstacle in a one-dimensional setting, accounting for inelastic contact between the string and the obstacle. We construct a global-in-time weak solution to this problem by using an approximation method that incorporates a penalizing repulsive force of the form $\frac1\varepsilonχ_{\{η<0\}} (\partial_tη)^-$. The weak solution exhibits well-controlled energy dissipation, occurring only during contact on a set of zero measure and exclusively when the string moves downward. Furthermore, the velocity is shown to vanish after contact in a specific weak sense. This model serves as a simplified framework for studying contact problems in fluid-structure interaction contexts.

Global weak solutions in nonlinear 3D thermoelasticity

Here we study a nonlinear thermoelasticity hyperbolic-parabolic system describing the balance of momentum and internal energy of a heat-conducting elastic body, preserving the positivity of temperature. So far, no global existence results in such a natural case were available. Our result is obtained by using thermodynamically justified variables which allow us to obtain an equivalent system in which the internal energy balance is replaced with entropy balance. For this system, a concept of weak solution with defect measure is introduced, which satisfies entropy inequality instead of balance and has a positive temperature almost everywhere. Then, the global existence, consistency and weak-strong uniqueness are shown in the cases where heat capacity and heat conductivity are both either constant or non-constant. Let us point out that this is the first result concerning global existence for large initial data in nonlinear thermoelasticity where the model is in full accordance with the laws of thermodynamics.

Global weak solutions to a 3D/3D fluid-structure interaction problem including possible contacts

In this paper, we study an interaction problem between a $3D$ compressible viscous fluid and a $3D$ nonlinear viscoelastic solid fully immersed in the fluid, coupled together on the interface surface. The solid is allowed to have self-contact or contact with the rigid boundary of the fluid container. For this problem, a global weak solution with defect measure is constructed by using a multi-layered approximation scheme which decouples the body and the fluid by penalizing the fluid velocity and allowing the fluid to pass through the body, while the body is supplemented with a contact-penalization term. The resulting defect measure is a consequence of pressure concentrations that can appear where the fluid meets the (generally irregular) points of self-contact of the solid. Moreover, we study some geometrical properties of the fluid-structure interface and the contact surface. In particular, we prove a lower bound on area of the interface.

On time-periodic solutions to an interaction problem between compressible viscous fluids and viscoelastic beams

In this paper, we study a nonlinear fluid-structure interaction problem between a viscoelastic beam and a compressible viscous fluid. The beam is immersed in the fluid which fills a two-dimensional rectangular domain with periodic boundary conditions. Under the effect of periodic forces acting on the beam and the fluid, at least one time-periodic weak solution is constructed which has a bounded energy and a fixed prescribed mass.

Existence of a weak solution to a nonlinear fluid-structure interaction problem with heat exchange

In this paper, we study a nonlinear interaction problem between a thermoelastic shell and a heat-conducting fluid. The shell is governed by linear thermoelasticity equations and encompasses a time-dependent domain which is filled with a fluid governed by the full Navier-Stokes-Fourier system. The fluid and the shell are fully coupled, giving rise to a novel nonlinear moving boundary fluid-structure interaction problem involving heat exchange. The existence of a weak solution is obtained by combining three approximation techniques -- decoupling, penalization and domain extension. This approximation scheme allows us to use the methods already developed for fluids on moving domains, thus drastically simplifying the analysis at hand.

Compressible fluids interacting with plates -- regularity and weak-strong uniqueness

In this paper, we study a nonlinear interaction problem between compressible viscous fluids and plates. For this problem, we introduce relative entropy and relative energy inequality for the finite energy weak solutions (FEWS). First, we prove that for all FEWS, the structure displacement enjoys improved regularity by utilizing the dissipation effects of the fluid onto the structure and that all FEWS satisfy the relative energy inequality. Then, we show that all FEWS enjoy the weak-strong uniqueness property, thus extending the classical result for compressible Navier-Stokes system to this fluid-structure interaction problem.

On the interaction problem between a compressible viscous fluid and a nonlinear thermoelastic plate

In this paper we study the interaction problem between a nonlinear thermoelastic plate and a compressible viscous fluid with the adiabatic constant $γ>12/7$. The existence of a weak solution for this problem is obtained by constructing a time-continuous operator splitting scheme that decouples the fluid and the structure. The fluid sub-problem is given on a fixed reference domain in the arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) formulation, and the continuity equation is damped on this domain as well. This allows the majority of the analysis to be performed on the fixed reference domain, while the convergence of the approximate pressure is obtained on the physical domain.

Existence of a weak solution to the fluid-structure interaction problem in 3D

We study a nonlinear fluid-structure interaction problem in which the fluid is described by the three-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, and the elastic structure is modeled by the nonlinear plate equation which includes a generalization of Kirchhoff, von Kármán and Berger plate models. The fluid and the structure are fully coupled via kinematic and dynamic boundary conditions. The existence of a weak solution is obtained by designing a hybrid approximation scheme that successfully deals with the nonlinearities of the system. We combine time-discretization and operator splitting to create two sub-problems, one piece-wise stationary for the fluid and one in the Galerkin basis for the plate. To guarantee the convergence of approximate solutions to a weak solution, a sufficient condition is given on the number of time discretization sub-intervals in every step in a form of dependence with number of the Galerkin basis functions and nonlinearity order of the plate equation.
