Confinement Versus Screening in the Schwinger Model on AdS$_2$ from Bosonization and Tensor Networks

We analyze confinement and screening in single-flavor quantum electrodynamics (QED$_2$) on two-dimensional anti-de Sitter space (AdS$_2$), with and without a Schwarzschild black hole, both in the continuum and on the lattice. The theory is formulated in two frames adapted to distinct choices of a preferred time coordinate: the Schwarzschild frame, associated with the Boulware vacuum, and the global AdS$_2$ frame, associated with the $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$-invariant vacuum. In the massless limit, the static potential between an external charge-anticharge pair is obtained in closed form by bosonization, at both zero and finite temperature. After subtraction of the position-dependent probe self-energies, which, unlike in flat space, are not constant, the potential remains finite as the geodesic separation is taken to infinity, establishing that the theory is screened. This is consistent with the explicit breaking of the $\mathrm{U}(1)$ electric one-form symmetry by the dynamical fermions, and resolves a confining/screening ambiguity in earlier treatments that identify the static potential with the unsubtracted ground-state energy. To validate the continuum analysis, we propose a covariant discretization scheme for placing fermions in curved spacetime on the lattice while ensuring that the continuum properties of the spin and gauge connections are restored in the continuum limit. This construction resolves ambiguities in the existing literature on lattice fermions in curved backgrounds and provides the foundation for our tensor-network simulations. Using a matrix product state ansatz, we confirm our analytical predictions for the phase diagram in AdS$_2$. We perform extensive numerical simulations of the static potential and the electric flux-tube profile for varying fermion masses, which we match to the continuum prediction.

Information-Theoretic Scaling Laws of Neural Quantum States

We establish an information-theoretic scaling law for generic autoregressive neural quantum states, determined by the middle-cut mutual information of the wavefunction amplitude. By formalizing the virtual bond as an effective information channel across a sequence bipartition, we rigorously prove that exact autoregressive representation of a quantum state requires the virtual-bond dimension to scale with the amplitude mutual information. For stabilizer-state families, we show that this law yields an explicit, analytical rank formula. Applying this framework across quantum-state tomography, ground-state and finite-temperature learning, our numerical experiments expose precise exponent matching, architecture-dependent scaling differences between recurrent and Transformer neural quantum state, and the critical role of autoregressive basis ordering. These results establish a rigorous physical link between the intrinsic structure of a quantum many-body state and the corresponding neural-network capacity required for its faithful representation.

A Path to Quantum Simulations of Topological Phases: (2+1)D Quantum Electrodynamics with Wilson Fermions

Quantum simulation offers a powerful approach to studying quantum field theories, particularly (2+1)D quantum electrodynamics (QED$_3$) with Wilson fermions, which hosts a rich landscape of physical phenomena. A key challenge in lattice formulations is the proper realization of topological phases and the Chern-Simons terms, where fermion discretization plays a crucial role. In this work, we highlight the differences between staggered and Wilson fermions coupled to $\text{U}(1)$ gauge fields in the Hamiltonian formulation. We analyze why staggered fermions fail to induce (2+1)D topological phases, while Wilson fermions admit a variety of topological phases including Chern insulator and quantum spin Hall phases. Additionally, we uncover a rich phase diagram for the two-flavor Wilson fermion model in the presence of a chemical potential. Our findings resolve existing ambiguities in Hamiltonian formulations and provide a theoretical foundation for future quantum simulations of lattice field theories with topological phases. We further outline connections to experimental platforms, offering guidance for implementations on near-term quantum computing architectures. A complementary presentation of the analytical calculations, the identification of robust topological structure and response, and extensive numerical results is contained in a joint submission [1].

Hamiltonian Lattice QED$_3$ with One and Two Flavors of Wilson Fermions: Topological Structure and Response

The quantum simulation of topological phases in (2+1)D quantum electrodynamics with Wilson fermions provides a promising route toward realizing topological phenomena in near-term lattice experiments. We show that the commonly used staggered-fermion discretizations in Hamiltonian gauge theories possesses an exact time-reversal symmetry, which forbids the emergence of nontrivial topological phases and has led to confusion in the existing literature. In this work, we resolve this obstacle by systematically analyzing fermion discretization effects in (2+1)D lattice Hamiltonians of fermions coupled to U(1) gauge fields that satisfy Gauss' law. We show that Wilson fermions, already in the minimal one-flavor theory, naturally enable topological regimes with nonzero Chern numbers, and that the two-flavor extension at finite chemical potential further enriches the accessible topological structure. We develop gauge-invariant diagnostics of topological response, including many-body Chern numbers and current correlators that remain robust probes at weak coupling. Finally, through extensive exact diagonalization calculations across both flavor settings, we characterize the spectrum, correlators, and topological invariants, providing a concrete foundation for near-term quantum simulations of topological phases in lattice field theories. The implications of this work for quantum simulations of lattice field theory are analyzed in a joint submission [1].

Non-invertible defects on the worldsheet

We consider codimension-one defects in the theory of $d$ compact scalars on a two-dimensional worldsheet, acting linearly by mixing the scalars and their duals. By requiring that the defects are topological, we find that they correspond to a non-Abelian zero-form symmetry acting on the fields as elements of $\text{O}(d;\mathbb{R}) \times \text{O}(d;\mathbb{R})$, and on momentum and winding charges as elements of $\text{O}(d,d;\mathbb{R})$. When the latter action is rational, we prove that it can be realized by combining gauging of non-anomalous discrete subgroups of the momentum and winding $\text{U}(1)$ symmetries, and elements of the $\text{O}(d,d;\mathbb{Z})$ duality group, such that the couplings of the theory are left invariant. Generically, these defects map local operators into non-genuine operators attached to lines, thus corresponding to a non-invertible symmetry. We confirm our results within a Lagrangian description of the non-invertible topological defects associated to the $\text{O}(d,d;\mathbb{Q})$ action on charges, giving a natural explanation of the rationality conditions. Finally, we apply our findings to toroidal compactifications of bosonic string theory. In the simplest non-trivial case, we discuss the selection rules of these non-invertible symmetries, verifying explicitly that they are satisfied on a worldsheet of higher genus.

Approaching Argyres-Douglas theories

The Seiberg-Witten solution to four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ super-Yang-Mills theory with gauge group $\text{SU}(N)$ and without hypermultiplets is used to investigate the neighborhood of the maximal Argyres-Douglas points of type $(\mathfrak{a}_1,\mathfrak{a}_{N-1})$. A convergent series expansion for the Seiberg-Witten periods near the Argyres-Douglas points is obtained by analytic continuation of the series expansion around the $\mathbb{Z}_{2N}$ symmetric point derived in arXiv:2208.11502. Along with direct integration of the Picard-Fuchs equations for the periods, the expansion is used to determine the location of the walls of marginal stability for $\text{SU}(3)$. The intrinsic periods and Kähler potential of the $(\mathfrak{a}_1,\mathfrak{a}_{N-1})$ superconformal fixed point are computed by letting the strong coupling scale tend to infinity. We conjecture that the resulting intrinsic Kähler potential is positive definite and convex, with a unique minimum at the Argyres-Douglas point, provided only intrinsic Coulomb branch operators with unitary scaling dimensions $Δ>1$ acquire a vacuum expectation value, and provide both analytical and numerical evidence in support of this conjecture. In all the low rank examples considered here, it is found that turning on moduli dual to $Δ\leq 1$ operators spoils the positivity and convexity of the intrinsic Kähler potential.
