Weighted Veronese Rings via Convex Semigroups

We determine properties of two-dimensional normal affine semigroup rings, and in particular of weighted Veronese rings, including determinantal presentation, Gr\"obner basis, graded Hilbert series and graded Betti numbers, the structure of their associated graded rings, and their Koszul property. We give examples in higher dimensions illustrating that the first and last properties may fail. Our approach leverages convex monomial ideals as introduced in Herzog-Qureshi-Saem(2019), which give rise to convex semigroups.

Structure and Symmetry of Sally Type Semigroup Rings

Consider a numerical semigroup minimally generated by a subset of the interval $[e,2e-1]$ with multiplicity $e$ and width $e-1$. Such numerical semigroups are called Sally type semigroups. We show that the defining ideals of these semigroup rings, when the embedding dimension is $e-2$, generically have the structure of the sum of two determinantal ideals. More generally, Sally type numerical semigroups with multiplicity $e$ and embedding dimension $d=e-k$ are obtained by introducing $k$ gaps in the interval $[e,2e-1]$. It is known that for $k =2$, there is precisely one such semigroup that is Gorenstein, and it happens when one deletes consecutive integers. Let $S^e_k(j)$ denote the Sally type numerical semigroup of multiplcity $e$, embedding dimension $e-k$ obtained by deleting the $k$ consecutive integers $j, j+1, \ldots, j+k-1$.We prove that for any $1\le k < e/2$, the semigroup $S^e_k(j)$ is Gorenstein if and only if $j=k$. We construct an explicit minimal free resolution of the semigroup ring of $S^e_k(k)$ and compute the Betti numbers. In general, we characterize when $S^e_k(j)$ are symmetric and construct minimal resolutions for these Gorenstein semigroup rings.

Numerical Semigroups of Sally Type II

In this paper we study numerical semigroups of Sally type of multiplicity $e$ and embedding dimension $\nu \ge e-2$. We construct the minimal resolutions for these semigroup rings when they are symmetric and compute their Betti numbers. We also construct a minimal resolution for another special class of such semigroups of type $\nu-1$. Finally, we propose some conjectures for the Betti numbers of families of non-symmetric Sally type semigroups in the above cases in relation to those of the corresponding Gorenstein cases of Sally type semigroups.

Numerical Semigroups of Sally Type

Judith Sally proved in 1980 that the associated graded ring of one-dimensional Gorenstein local rings of multiplicity $e$ and embedding dimension $e-2$ are Cohen-Macaulay. She showed that the defining ideal of the associated graded ring of such rings is generated by ${e-2 \choose 2}$ elements. Numerical semigroup rings are a big class of one-dimensional Cohen-Macaulay rings. In 2014, Herzog and Stamate proved that the numerical semigroup $ $ defines a Gorenstein semigroup ring satisfying Sally's conditions above and such semigroups are called Gorenstein Sally Semigroups. We call a numerical semigroup $S$ as Sally type if $ = < e,e+1,\ldots,e+m-1, e+m+1,\ldots, e+n-1,e+n+1, \ldots 2e-1>$ for some $2 \leq m <n \leq e-2$. In this paper, we give a formula for its Frobenius number along with a necessary and sufficient condition for it to be Gorenstein. We compute the minimal number of generators for the defining ideal of the semigroup ring $k[S]$. Additionally, we present an algorithm and a GAP code used in applying Hochster's combinatorial formula to compute the first Betti number of $k[S]$.

The weak normalization of an affine semigroup

In this article, we define and explore the weak normalization of an affine semigroup. In particular, for a fixed prime integer, we provide a geometric description of the weak normalization of an affine semigroup with respect to that prime, which corresponds to the weak normalization of the affine semigroup ring over a field of that prime characteristic, similar to the description of the seminormalization of an affine semigroup given by Reid-Roberts. We then use this description to understand the singularities of an affine semigroup ring defined over a field of prime characteristic and provide several examples. In particular, we demonstrate that all affine semigroup rings defined over fields of prime characteristic have a uniform upper bound on the Frobenius test exponent of all ideals, which provides a large and important class of examples with a positive answer to a question of Katzman-Sharp on uniformity of Frobenius test exponents. Finally, we provide an algorithm and implementation to compute the weak normalization of an affine semigroup, as well as the Frobenius test exponent and Frobenius closures of ideals in the affine semigroup ring.

The Betti Numbers of Kunz-Waldi Semigroups

Given two coprime numbers $p<q$, KW semigroups contain $p,q$ and are contained in $\langle p,q,r \rangle$ where $2r= p,q, p+q$ whichever is even. These semigroups were first introduced by Kunz and Waldi. Kunz and Waldi proved that all $KW$ semigroups of embedding dimension $n\geq 4$ have Cohen-Macaulay type $n-1$ and first Betti number ${n \choose 2}$. In this paper, we characterize KW semigroups whose defining ideal is generated by the $2\times 2$ minors of a $2\times n$ matrix. In addition, we identify all KW semigroups that lie on the interior of the same face of the Kunz cone $\mathcal C_p$ as a KW semigroup with determinantal defining ideal. Thus, we provide an explicit formula for the Betti numbers of all those KW semigroups.

A Class of Numerical Semigroups Defined by Kunz and Waldi

In this paper, we explore a class of numerical semigroups initiated by Kunz and Waldi containing two coprime numbers $p < q$, which we call KW semigroups. We characterize KW numerical semigroups by their principal matrices. We present a necessary and sufficient criterion for a matrix to be the principal matrix of a KW semigroup. An explicit description of the minimal resolutions of numerical semigroups in the same class with small embedding dimensions 3 and 4 is given. We give a generalization of this notion to three dimensions using lattice paths under a plane and present some preliminary results and questions.

Wilf Inequality is preserved under Gluing of Semigroups

Wilf Conjecture on numerical semigroups is an inequality connecting the Frobenius number, embedding dimension and the genus of the semigroup. The conjecture is still open in general. We prove that the Wilf inequality is preserved under gluing of numerical semigroups. If the numerical semigroups minimally generated by $A = \{ a_1, \ldots, a_p\}$ and $B = \{ b_1, \ldots, b_q\}$ satisfy the Wilf inequality, then so does their gluing which is minimally generated by $C =k_1A\sqcup k_2B$. We discuss the extended Wilf's Conjecture in higher dimensions and prove an analogous result.

Feature extraction and evaluation for BioMedical Question Answering

In this paper, we present our work on the BioASQ pipeline. The goal is to answer four types of questions: summary, yes/no, factoids, and list. Our goal is to empirically evaluate different modules involved: the feature extractor and the sentence selection block. We used our pipeline to test the effectiveness of each module for all kinds of question types and perform error analysis. We defined metrics that are useful for future research related to the BioASQ pipeline critical to improve the performance of the training pipeline.
