Sequential commutation in tracial von Neumann algebras

Recall that a unitary in a tracial von Neumann algebra is Haar if $τ(u^n)=0$ for all $n\in \mathbb{N}$. We introduce and study a new Borel equivalence relation $\sim_N$ on the set of Haar unitaries in a diffuse tracial von Neumann algebra $N$. Two Haar unitaries $u,v$ in $\mathcal{U}(N)$ are related if there exists a finite path of sequentially commuting Haar unitaries in an ultrapower $N^\mathcal{U}$, beginning at $u$ and ending at $v$. We show that for any diffuse tracial von Neumann algebra $N$, the equivalence relation $\sim_N$ admits either 1 orbit or uncountably many orbits. We characterize property Gamma in terms of path length and number of orbits of $\sim_N$ and also show the existence of non-Gamma II$_1$ factors so that $\sim_N$ admits only 1 orbit. Examples where $\sim_N$ admits uncountably many orbits include $N$ having positive 1-bounded entropy: $h(N)>0$. As a key example, we explicitly describe $\sim_{L(\mathbb{F}_t)}$ for the free group factors. Using these ideas we introduce a numerical invariant for diffuse tracial von Neumann algebras called the commutation diameter, with applications to elementary equivalence classification. We compute lower and upper bounds for the commutation diameter in various examples. Notably we obtain non-trivial lower bounds for the family of arbitrary graph products $N$ of diffuse tracial von Neumann algebras whose underlying graph is connected and has diameter at least 4, and distinguish them up to elementary equivalence from the [CIKE23] exotic factors, despite satisfying $h(N)\leq 0$.

Upgraded free independence phenomena for random unitaries

We study upgraded free independence phenomena for unitary elements $u_1$, $u_2$, \dots representing the large-$n$ limit of Haar random unitaries, showing that free independence extends to several larger algebras containing $u_j$ in the ultraproduct of matrices $\prod_{n \to \mathcal{U}} M_n(\mathbb{C})$. Using a uniform asymptotic freeness argument and volumetric analysis, we prove free independence of the Pinsker algebras $\mathcal{P}_j$ containing $u_j$. The Pinsker algebra $\mathcal{P}_j$ is the maximal subalgebra containing $u_j$ with vanishing $1$-bounded entropy defined by Hayes; $\mathcal{P}_j$ in particular contains the relative commutant $\{u_j\}' \cap \prod_{n \to \mathcal{U}} M_n(\mathbb{C})$, more generally any unitary that can be connected to $u_j$ by a sequence of commuting pairs of Haar unitaries, and any unitary $v$ such that $v\mathcal{P}_j v^* \cap \mathcal{P}_j$ is diffuse. Through an embedding argument, we go back and deduce analogous free independence results for $\mathcal{M}^{\mathcal{U}}$ when $\mathcal{M}$ is a free product of Connes embeddable tracial von Neumann algebras $\mathcal{M}_i$, which thus yields (in the Connes-embeddable case) a generalization and a new proof of Houdayer--Ioana's results on free independence of approximate commutants. It also yields a new proof of the general absorption results for Connes-embeddable free products obtained by the first author, Hayes, Nelson, and Sinclair.

Selfless reduced free product $C^*$-algebras

We study selflessness in the general setting of reduced free products of $C^*$-algebras. Towards this end, we develop a suitable theory of rapid decay for filtrations in arbitrary $C^*$-probability spaces. We provide several natural examples and permanence properties of this phenomenon. By using this framework in combination with von Neumann algebraic techniques involving approximate forms of orthogonality, we are able to prove selflessness for general families of reduced free product $C^*$-algebras. As an instance of our results, we prove selflessness and thus strict comparison for the canonical $C^*$-algebras generated by Voiculescu's free semicircular systems. Our results also provide new examples of purely infinite reduced free products.

Hyperfiniteness for group actions on trees

We identify natural conditions for a countable group acting on a countable tree which imply that the orbit equivalence relation of the induced action on the Gromov boundary is Borel hyperfinite. Examples of this condition include acylindrical actions. We also identify a natural weakening of the aforementioned conditions that implies measure hyperfinitenss of the boundary action. We then document examples of group actions on trees whose boundary action is not hyperfinite.

Negative resolution to the $C^*$-algebraic Tarski problem

We compute the $K_1$-group of ultraproducts of unital, simple $C^*$-algebras with unique trace and strict comparison. As an application, we prove that the reduced free group $C^*$-algebras $C^*_r(F_m)$ and $C^*_r(F_n)$ are elementarily equivalent (i.e., have isomorphic ultrapowers) if and only if $m = n$. This settles in the negative the $C^*$-algebraic analogue of Tarski's 1945 problem for groups.

3-handle construction on II$_1$ factors

We find a subtle modification to the construction of Chifan-Ioana-Kunnawalkam Elayavalli, which yields a drastic simplification of the proof of the existence of two non Gamma non elementarily equivalent II$_1$ factors.

Simplices of maximally amenable extensions in II$_1$ factors

For every $n\in \mathbb{N}$ we obtain a separable II$_1$ factor $M$ and a maximally abelian subalgebra $A\subset M$ such that the space of maximally amenable extensions of $A$ in $M$ is affinely identified with the $n$ dimensional $\mathbb{R}$-simplex. This moreover yields first examples of masas in II$_1$ factors $A\subset M$ admitting exactly $n$ maximally amenable factorial extensions. Our examples of such $M$ are group von Neumann algebras of free products of lamplighter groups amalgamated over the acting group. A conceptual ingredient that goes into obtaining this result is a simultaneous relative asymptotic orthogonality property, extending prior works in the literature. The proof uses technical tools including our uniform-flattening strategy for commutants in ultrapowers of II$_1$ factors.

General solidity phenomena and anticoarse spaces for type $\mathrm{III}_1$ factors

By developing a theory of anticoarse spaces in the purely infinite setting and using 1-bounded entropy techniques along with recent strong convergence results in random matrix theory, we show that free Araki--Woods factors offer the first examples of type $\mathrm{III}$ factors satisfying vastly general degrees of indecomposability phenomena. Notably this includes strong solidity with respect to any weakening of the normalizer currently in the literature and the Peterson--Thom property.

Random permutation matrix models for graph products

Graph independence (also known as $ε$-independence or $λ$-independence) is a mixture of classical independence and free independence corresponding to graph products or groups and operator algebras. Using conjugation by certain random permutation matrices, we construct random matrix models for graph independence with amalgamation over the diagonal matrices. This yields a new probabilist,ic proof that graph products of sofic groups are sofic.

Sofic actions on graphs

We develop a theory of soficity for actions on graphs and obtain new applications to the study of sofic groups. We establish various examples, stability and permanence properties of sofic actions on graphs, in particular soficity is preserved by taking several natural graph join operations. We prove that an action of a group on its Cayley graph is sofic if and only if the group is sofic. We show that arbitrary actions of amenable groups on graphs are sofic. Using a graph theoretic result of E. Hrushovski, we also show that arbitrary actions of free groups on graphs are sofic. Notably we show that arbitrary actions of sofic groups on graphs, with amenable stabilizers, are sofic, settling completely an open problem from \cite{gao2024soficity}. We also show that soficity is preserved by taking limits under a natural Gromov-Hausdorff topology, generalizing prior work of the first author \cite{gao2024actionslerfgroupssets}. Our work sheds light on a family of groups called graph wreath products, simultaneously generalizing graph products and generalized wreath products. Extending various prior results in this direction including soficity of generalized wreath products \cite{gao2024soficity}, B. Hayes and A. Sale \cite{HayesSale}, and soficity of graph products \cite{CHR, charlesworth2021matrix}, we show that graph wreath products are sofic if the action and acting groups are sofic. These results provide several new examples of sofic groups in a systematic manner.

On soficity for certain fundamental groups of graphs of groups

In this note we study a family of graphs of groups over arbitrary base graphs where all vertex groups are isomorphic to a fixed countable sofic group $G$, and all edge groups $H<G$ are such that the embeddings of $H$ into $G$ are identical everywhere. We prove soficity for this family of groups under a flexible technical hypothesis for $H$ called $σ$-co-sofic. This proves soficity for group doubles $*_H G$, where $H<G$ is an arbitrary separable subgroup and $G$ is countable and sofic. This includes arbitrary finite index group doubles of sofic groups among various other examples.

Consequences of the random matrix solution to the Peterson-Thom conjecture

In this paper we show various new structural properties of free group factors using the recent resolution (due independently to Belinschi-Capitaine and Bordenave-Collins) of the Peterson-Thom conjecture. These results include the resolution to the coarseness conjecture independently due to the first-named author and Popa, a generalization of Ozawa-Popa's celebrated strong solidity result using vastly more general versions of the normalizer (and in an ultraproduct setting), a dichotomy result for intertwining of maximal amenable subalgebras of interpolated free group factors, as well as application to ultraproduct embeddings of nonamenable subalgebras of interpolated free group factors.

On sofic approximations of non amenable groups

In this paper we exhibit for every non amenable group that is initially sub-amenable (sometimes also referred to as LEA), two sofic approximations that are not conjugate by any automorphism of the universal sofic group. This addresses a question of Paunescu and generalizes the Elek-Szabo uniqueness theorem for sofic approximations.

Approximate homomorphisms and sofic approximations of orbit equivalence relations

We show that for every countable group, any sequence of approximate homomorphisms with values in permutations can be realized as the restriction of a sofic approximation of an orbit equivalence relation. Moreover, this orbit equivalence relation is uniquely determined by the invariant random subgroup of the approximate homomorphism. We record applications of this result to recover various known stability and conjugacy characterizations for almost homomorphisms of amenable groups.

Internal sequential commutation and single generation

We extract a precise internal description of the sequential commutation equivalence relation introduced in [KEP23] for tracial von Neumann algebras. As an application we prove that if a tracial von Neumann algebra $N$ is generated by unitaries $\{u_i\}_{i\in \mathbb{N}}$ such that $u_i\sim u_j$ (i.e, there exists a finite set of Haar unitaries $\{w_i\}_{i=1}^{n}$ in $N^\mathcal{U}$ such that $[u_i, w_1]= [w_k, w_{k+1}]=[w_n,u_j]=0$ for all $1\leq k< n$) then $N$ is singly generated. This generalizes and recovers several known single generation phenomena for II$_1$ factors in the literature with a unified proof.

On the structure of graph product von Neumann algebras

We undertake a comprehensive study of structural properties of graph products of von Neumann algebras equipped with faithful, normal states, as well as properties of the graph products relative to subalgebras coming from induced subgraphs. Among the technical contributions in this paper include a complete bimodule calculation for subalgebras arising from subgraphs. As an application, we obtain a complete classification of when two subalgebras coming from induced subgraphs can be amenable relative to each other. We also give complete characterizations of when the graph product can be full, diffuse, or a factor. Our results are obtained in a broad generality, and we emphasize that they are new even in the tracial setting. They also allow us to deduce new results about when graph products of groups can be amenable relative to each other.

Strong 1-boundedness, $L^2$-Betti numbers, algebraic soficity, and graph products

We show that graph products of non trivial finite dimensional von Neumann algebras are strongly 1-bounded when the underlying *-algebra has vanishing first L2-Betti number. The proof uses a combination of the following two key ideas to obtain lower bounds on the Fuglede-Kadison determinant of matrix polynomials in a generating set: a notion called ''algebraic soficity'' for *-algebras allowing for the existence of Galois bounded microstates with asymptotically constant diagonals; a probabilistic construction of the authors of permutation models for graph independence over the diagonal.

On the structure of relatively biexact group von Neumann algebras

Using computations in the bidual of $\mathbb{B}(L^2M)$ we develop a new technique at the von Neumann algebra level to upgrade relative proper proximality to full proper proximality. This is used to structurally classify subalgebras of $LΓ$ where $Γ$ is an infinite group that is biexact relative to a finite family of subgroups $\{Λ_i\}_{i\in I}$ such that each $Λ_i$ is almost malnormal in $Γ$. This generalizes the result of \cite{DKEP21} which classifies subalgebras of von Neumann algebras of biexact groups. By developing a combination with techniques from Popa's deformation-rigidity theory we obtain a new structural absorption theorem for free products and a generalized Kurosh type theorem in the setting of properly proximal von Neumann algebras.
