Solar Model Parameters and Direct Measurements of Solar Neutrino Fluxes

We explore a novel possibility of determining the solar model parameters, which serve as input in the calculations of the solar neutrino fluxes, by exploiting the data from direct measurements of the fluxes. More specifically, we use the rather precise value of the $^8B$ neutrino flux, $ϕ_B$ obtained from the global analysis of the solar neutrino and KamLAND data, to derive constraints on each of the solar model parameters on which $ϕ_B$ depends. We also use more precise values of $^7Be$ and $pp$ fluxes as can be obtained from future prospective data and discuss whether such measurements can help in reducing the uncertainties of one or more input parameters of the Standard Solar Model.

Constraining Mass Spectra with Sterile Neutrinos from Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay, Tritium Beta Decay and Cosmology

We analyze the constraints on neutrino mass spectra with extra sterile neutrinos as implied by the LSND experiment. The various mass related observables in neutrinoless double beta decay, tritium beta decay and cosmology are discussed. Both neutrino oscillation results as well as recent cosmological neutrino mass bounds are taken into account. We find that some of the allowed mass patterns are severely restricted by the current constraints, in particular by the cosmological constraints on the total sum of neutrino masses and by the non-maximality of the solar neutrino mixing angle. Furthermore, we estimate the form of the four neutrino mass matrices and also comment on the situation in scenarios with two additional sterile neutrinos.

Quark-lepton complementarity with quasidegenerate Majorana neutrinos

A basis independent formulation of quark-lepton complementarity is implemented at a high scale for quasidegenerate Majorana neutrinos. It is shown that even with the renormalization group evolution in the minimal supersymmetric standard model, the scenario can be consistent with the data provided a nontrivial role is played by the Majorana phases. Correlated constraints are found on these phases and the neutrino mass scale using the current data. We also indicate how future accurate measurements of the mixing angles can serve as tests of this scenario and restrict the values of the Majorana phases.

Earth Matter Effects at Very Long Baselines and the Neutrino Mass Hierarchy

We study matter effects which arise in the muon neutrino oscillation and survival probabilities relevant to atmospheric neutrino and very long baseline beam experiments. The inter-relations between the three probabilities P_{μe}, P_{μτ} and P_{μμ} are examined. It is shown that large and observable sensitivity to the neutrino mass hierarchy can be present in P_{μμ} and P_{μτ}. We emphasize that at baselines of > 7000 Km, matter effects in P_{μτ} can be large under certain conditions. The muon survival rates in experiments with very long baselines thus depend on matter effects in both P_{μτ} and P_{μe}. We indicate where these effects are sensitive to θ_{13}, and identify ranges of E and L where the event rates increase with decreasing θ_{13}, providing a handle to probe small θ_{13}. The effect of parameter degeneracies in the three probabilities at these baselines and energies is studied in detail. Realistic event rate calculations are performed for a charge discriminating 100 kT iron calorimeter which demonstrate the possibility of realising the goal of determining the neutrino mass hierarchy using atmospheric neutrinos. It is shown that a careful selection of energy and baseline ranges is necessary in order to obtain a statistically significant signal, and that the effects are largest in bins where matter effects in both P_{μe} and P_{μτ} combine constructively. Under these conditions, upto a 4σsignal for matter effects is possible (for Δ_{31}>0) within a timescale appreciably shorter than the one anticipated for neutrino factories.

High Precision Measurements of $θ_{\odot}$ in Solar and Reactor Neutrino Experiments

We discuss the possibilities of high precision measurement of the solar neutrino mixing angle $θ_\odot \equiv θ_{12}$ in solar and reactor neutrino experiments. The improvements in the determination of $\sin^2θ_{12}$, which can be achieved with the expected increase of statistics and reduction of systematic errors in the currently operating solar and KamLAND experiments, are summarised. The potential of LowNu $ν-e$ elastic scattering experiment, designed to measure the $pp$ solar neutrino flux, for high precision determination of $\sin^2θ_{12}$, is investigated in detail. The accuracy in the measurement of $\sin^2θ_{12}$, which can be achieved in a reactor experiment with a baseline $L \sim (50-70)$ km, corresponding to a Survival Probability MINimum (SPMIN), is thoroughly studied. We include the effect of the uncertainty in the value of $\sin^2θ_{13}$ in the analyses. A LowNu measurement of the $pp$ neutrino flux with a 1% error would allow to determine $\sin^2θ_{12}$ with an error of 14% (17%) at 3$σ$ from a two-generation (three-generation) analysis. The same parameter $\sin^2θ_{12}$ can be measured with an uncertainty of 2% (6%) at 1$σ$ (3$σ$) in a reactor experiment with $L \sim60 $ km, statistics of $\sim$60 GWkTy and systematic error of 2%. For the same statistics, the increase of the systematic error from 2% to 5% leads to an increase in the uncertainty in $\sin^2θ_{12}$ from 6% to 9% at 3$σ$. The inclusion of the $\sin^2θ_{13}$ uncertainty in the analysis changes the error on $\sin^2θ_{12}$ to 3% (9%). The effect of $\sin^2θ_{13}$ uncertainty on the $\sin^2θ_{12}$ measurement in both types of experiments is considerably smaller than naively expected.

Solar neutrinos and 1-3 leptonic mixing

Effects of the 1-3 leptonic mixing on the solar neutrino observables are studied and the signatures of non-zero $θ_{13}$ are identified. For this we have re-derived the formula for $3ν$-survival probability including all relevant corrections and constructed the iso-contours of observables in the $\sin^2 θ_{12} - \sin^2 θ_{13}$ plane. Analysis of the solar neutrino data gives $\sin^2θ_{13} = 0.007^{+ 0.080}_{-0.007}$ (90% C.L.) for $Δm^2 = 8 \cdot 10^{-5}$ eV$^2$. The combination of the ratio CC/NC at SNO and gallium production rate selects $\sin^2θ_{13} = 0.017 \pm 0.026$ ($1σ$). The global fit of all oscillation data leads to zero best value of $\sin^2 θ_{13}$. The sensitivity ($1σ$ error) of future solar neutrino studies to $\sin^2 θ_{13}$ can be improved down to 0.01 - 0.02 by precise measurements of the pp-neutrino flux and the CC/NC ratio as well as spectrum distortion at high ($E > 4$ MeV) energies. Combination of experimental results sensitive to the low and high energy parts of the solar neutrino spectrum resolves the degeneracy of angles $θ_{13}$ and $θ_{12}$. Comparison of $\sin^2 θ_{13}$ as well as $\sin^2 θ_{12}$ measured in the solar neutrinos and in the reactor/accelerator experiments may reveal new effects which can not be seen otherwise.

Probing the Neutrino Mass Hierarchy via Atmospheric $ν_μ+ \bar ν_μ$ Survival Rates in Megaton Water Cerenkov Detectors

The neutrino mass hierarchy, presently unknown, is a powerful discriminator among various classes of unification theories. We show that the $ν_μ + \barν_μ$ survival rate in atmospheric events can provide a novel method of determining the hierarchy in megaton water Cerenkov detectors. For pathlength and energy ranges relevant to atmospheric neutrinos, this rate obtains significant matter sensitive variations not only from resonant matter effects in $P_{μe}$ but also from those in $P_{μτ}$. We calculate the expected muon event rates in the case of matter oscillations with both natural and inverted hierarchy. We identify the energy and pathlength ranges for which resonant matter effects can lead to observable differences between the above two cases. We also estimate the exposure time required to observe this difference and determine the sign of $Δ_{31}$ in a statistically significant manner.

Large Matter Effects in ${ν_μ\to ν_τ}$ Oscillations

We show that matter effects change the ${\rm {ν_μ\to ν_τ}}$ oscillation probability by as much as 70% for certain ranges of energies and pathlengths. Consequently, the ${\rm {ν_μ\to ν_μ}}$ survival probability also undergoes large changes. A proper understanding of $ν_μ$ survival rates must consider matter effects in $P_{μτ}$ as well as $P_{μe}$. We comment on a) how these matter effects may be observed and the sign of $Δ_{31}$ determined in atmospheric neutrino measurements and at neutrino factories and b) how they lead to heightened sensitivity for small $θ_{13}$.

Update of the solar neutrino oscillation analysis with the 766 Ty KamLAND spectrum

We investigate the impact of the 766.3 Ty KamLAND spectrum data on the determination of the solar neutrino oscillation parameters. We show that the observed spectrum distortion in the KamLAND experiment firmly establishes $Δm^2_{21}$ to lie in the low-LMA solution region. The high-LMA solution is excluded at more than 4$σ$ by the global solar neutrino and KamLAND spectrum data. The maximal solar neutrino mixing is ruled out at $6σ$ level. The $3σ$ allowed region in the $Δm^2_{21}-\sin^2θ_{12}$ plane is found to be remarkably stable with respect to leaving out the data from one of the solar neutrino experiments from the global analysis. We perform a three flavor neutrino oscillation analysis of the global solar neutrino and KamLAND spectrum data as well. The $3σ$ upper limit on $\sin^2θ_{13}$ is found to be $ \sin^2θ_{13} <0.055$. We derive predictions for the CC to NC event rate ratio and day-night (D-N) asymmetry in the CC event rate, measured in the SNO experiment, and for the suppression of the event rate in the BOREXINO and LowNu experiments. Prospective high precision measurements of the solar neutrino oscillation parameters are also discussed.

Working Group Report: Neutrino and Astroparticle Physics

This is the report of neutrino and astroparticle physics working group at WHEPP-8. We present the discussions carried out during the workshop on selected topics in the above fields and also indicate progress made subsequently. The neutrino physics subgroup studied the possibilites of constraining neutrino masses, mixing and CPT violation in lepton sector from future experiments. Neutrino mass models in the context of abelian horizontal symmetries, warped extra dimensions and in presence of triplet Higgs were studied. Effect of threshold corrections on radiative magnification of mixing angles was investigated. The astroparticle physics subgroup focused on how various particle physics inputs affect the CMBR fluctuation spectrum, and on brane cosmology. This report also contains an introduction on how to use the publicly available code CMBFAST to calculate the CMBR fluctuations.

Global Analysis of Neutrino Oscillation

We present the constraints on neutrino oscillation parameters $Δm^2_{\odot}$ and $θ_{\odot}$ governing the solar neutrino oscillations from two generation analysis of solar and KamLAND data. We include the latest 766.3 ton year KamLAND data in our analysis. We also present the allowed values of parameters $Δm^2_{atm}$ and $\sin^2θ_{atm}$ from two generation oscillation analysis of SuperKamiokande atmospheric and K2K data. For both cases we discuss the precision achieved in the present set of experiments and also how the precision can be improved in future. We also obtain the bounds on $θ_{13}$ from three generation analysis of global oscillation data. We emphasise on the roles played by different data sets in constraining the allowed parameter ranges.

Prospects of probing $θ_{13}$ and neutrino mass hierarchy by Supernova Neutrinos in KamLAND

In this paper we study the physics potential of the KamLAND detector in probing neutrino oscillation parameters through observation of supernova neutrinos. In particular, we discuss the possibilities of probing the mixing angle $θ_{13}$ and determining the sign of $Δm^2_{32}$ from the total charged current(CC) event rates on the proton and $^{12}{C}$ target, as well as from the CC spectra. We discuss the chances of probing the earth matter effect induced modulations from the observation of CC spectra in the different CC reactions in KamLAND and find the volume required to get a statistically significant signature of the earth matter effect in different energy bins. We also calculate the event rates expected in the neutral current (NC) reactions on Carbon and free proton and investigate if the charged current to neutral current ratios, which are free of the absolute luminosity uncertainty in the supernova neutrino fluxes, can be useful in probing the oscillation parameters.

Constraints on neutrino oscillation parameters from the SNO salt phase data

The physics implications of the just published salt phase data from the SNO experiment are examined. The effect of these data on the allowed ranges of the solar neutrino oscillation parameters, $Δ_m^2_{21}$ and $\sin^2θ_{12}$, are studied in the cases of two- and three- neutrino mixing. In the latter case we derive an upper limit on the angle $θ_{13}$. Constraints on the solar $ν_e$ transitions into a mixture of active and sterile neutrinos are also presented. Finally, we give predictions for the day-night asymmetry in the SNO experiment, for the event rate in the BOREXINO and LowNu experiments, and discuss briefly the constraints on the solar neutrino oscillation parameters which can be obtained with prospective KamLAND data.

Solar Neutrino Oscillation Parameters after KamLAND

We explore the impact of the data from the KamLAND experiment in constraining neutrino mass and mixing angles involved in solar neutrino oscillations. In particular we discuss the precision with which we can determine the the mass squared difference $Δm^2_{solar}$ and the mixing angle $θ_{solar}$ from combined solar and KamLAND data. We show that the precision with which $Δm^_{solar}$ can be determined improves drastically with the KamLAND data but the sensitivity of KamLAND to the mixing angle is not as good. We study the effect of enhanced statistics in KamLAND as well as reduced systematics in improving the precision. We also show the effect of the SNO salt data in improving the precision. Finally we discuss how a dedicated reactor experiment with a baseline of 70 km can improve the $θ_{solar}$ sensitivity by a large amount.

On the Measurement of Solar Neutrino Oscillation Parameters with KamLAND

A new reactor power plant Shika-2, with a power of approximately 4 GW and at a distance of about 88 km from the KamLAND detector is scheduled to start operating in March 2006. We study the impact of the $\barν_e$ flux from this reactor on the sensitivity of the KamLAND experiment to the solar neutrino oscillation parameters. We present results on prospective determination of $Δm^2_\odot$ and $\sin^2θ_\odot$ using the combined data from KamLAND and the solar neutrino experiments, including the effect of the Shika-2 contribution to the KamLAND signal and the latest data from the salt enriched phase of the SNO experiment. We find that contrary to the expectations, the addition of the Shika-2 reactor flux does not improve the $\sin^2θ_\odot$ sensitivity of KamLAND, while the ambiguity in $Δm^2_\odot$ measurement may even increase, as a result of the averaging effect between Kashiwazaki and the Shika-2 reactor contributions to the KamLAND signal.

Testing the solar LMA region with KamLAND data

We investigate the potential of 3 kiloTon-years(kTy) of KamLAND data to further constrain the $Δm^2$ and $\tan^2θ$ values compared to those presently allowed by existing KamLAND and global solar data. We study the extent, dependence and characteristics of this sensitivity in and around the two parts of the LMA region that are currently allowed. Our analysis with 3 kTy simulated spectra shows that KamLAND spectrum data by itself can constrain $Δm^2$ with high precision. Combining the spectrum with global solar data further tightens the constraints on allowed values of $\tan^2θ$ and $Δm^2$. We also study the effects of future neutral current data with a total error of 7% from the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory. We find that these future measurements offer the potential of considerable precision in determining the oscillation parameters (specially the mass parameter).

Solar Neutrino Oscillation Phenomenology

This article summarises the status of the solar neutrino oscillation phenomenology at the end of 2002 in the light of the SNO and KamLAND results. We first present the allowed areas obtained from global solar analysis and demonstrate the preference of the solar data towards the Large-Mixing-Angle (LMA) MSW solution. A clear confirmation in favor of the LMA solution comes from the \kl reactor neutrino data. The \kl spectral data in conjunction with the global solar data further narrows down the allowed LMA region and splits it into two allowed zones -- a low $Δm^2$ region (low-LMA) and high $Δm^2$ region (high-LMA). We demonstrate through a projected analysis that with an exposure of 3 kton-year (kTy) \kl can remove this ambiguity.

Progress in neutrino oscillation searches and their implications

Neutrino Oscillation, in which a given flavour of neutrino transforms into another is a powerful tool for probing small neutrino masses. The intrinsic neutrino properties involved are neutrino mass squared difference $Δm^2$ and the mixing angle in vacuum $θ$. In this talk I will summarize the progress that we have achieved in our search for neutrino oscillation with special emphasis on the recent results from the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO) on the measurement of solar neutrino fluxes. I will outline the current bounds on the neutrino masses and mixing parameters and discuss the major physics goals of future neutrino experiments in the context of the present picture.
