Observations of spatiotemporal instabilities in the strong-driving regime of an AC-driven nonlinear Schrödinger system

Localized dissipative structures (LDS) have been predicted to display a rich array of instabilities, yet systematic experimental studies have remained scarce. We have used a synchronously-driven optical fiber ring resonator to experimentally study LDS instabilities in the strong-driving regime of the AC-driven nonlinear Schrödinger equation (also known as the Lugiato-Lefever model). Through continuous variation of a single control parameter, we have observed a string of theoretically predicted instability modes, including irregular oscillations and chaotic collapses. Beyond a critical point, we observe behaviour reminiscent of a phase transition: LDSs trigger localized domains of spatiotemporal chaos that invade the surrounding homogeneous state. Our findings directly confirm a number of theoretical predictions, and they highlight that complex LDS instabilities can play a role in experimental systems.

Origin and stability of dark pulse Kerr combs in normal dispersion resonators

We analyze dark pulse Kerr frequency combs in optical resonators with normal group-velocity dispersion using the Lugiato-Lefever model. We show that in the time domain these correspond to interlocked switching waves between the upper and lower homogeneous states, and explain how this fact accounts for many of their experimentally observed properties. Modulational instability does not play any role in their existence. Furthermore, we provide a detailed map indicating where stable dark pulse Kerr combs can be found in parameter space, and how they are destabilized for increasing values of frequency detuning.

Bunching of temporal cavity solitons via forward Brillouin scattering

We report on the experimental observation of bunching dynamics with temporal cavity solitons in a continuously-driven passive fibre resonator. Specifically, we excite a large number of ultrafast cavity solitons with random temporal separations, and observe in real time how the initially random sequence self-organizes into regularly-spaced aggregates. To explain our experimental observations, we develop a simple theoretical model that allows long-range acoustically-induced interactions between a large number of temporal cavity solitons to be simulated. Significantly, results from our simulations are in excellent agreement with our experimental observations, strongly suggesting that the soliton bunching dynamics arise from forward Brillouin scattering. In addition to confirming prior theoretical analyses and unveiling a new cavity soliton self-organization phenomenon, our findings elucidate the manner in which sound interacts with large ensembles of ultrafast pulses of light.

Controlled merging and annihilation of localized dissipative structures in an AC-driven damped nonlinear Schrödinger system

We report studies of controlled interactions of localized dissipative structures in a system described by the AC-driven damped nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Extensive numerical simulations reveal a diversity of interaction scenarios that are governed by the properties of the system driver. In our experiments, performed with a nonlinear optical Kerr resonator, the phase profile of the driver is used to induce interactions on demand. We observe both merging and annihilation of localized structures, i.e., interactions governed by the dissipative, out-of-equilibrium nature of the system.

An octave spanning mid-infrared frequency comb generated in a silicon nanophotonic wire waveguide

We demonstrate an octave-spanning frequency comb with a spectrum covering wavelengths from 1,540 nm up to 3,200 nm. The supercontinuum is generated by pumping a 1-cm long dispersion engineered silicon wire waveguide by 70 fs pulses with an energy of merely 15 pJ. We confirm the phase coherence of the output spectrum by beating the supercontinuum with narrow bandwidth CW lasers. We show that the experimental results are in agreement with numerical simulations.

Impact of third order dispersion on nonlinear bifurcations in optical resonators

It is analytically shown that symmetry breaking, in dissipative systems, affects the nature of the bifurcation at onset of instability resulting in transitions from super to subcritical bifurcations. In the case of a nonlinear fiber cavity, we have derived an amplitude equation to describe the nonlinear dynamics above threshold. An analytical expression of the critical transition curve is obtained and the predictions are in excellent agreement with the numerical solutions of the full dynamical model.

Dispersive wave emission and supercontinuum generation in a silicon wire waveguide pumped around the 1550 nm telecommunication wavelength

We experimentally and numerically study dispersive wave emission, soliton fission and supercontinuum generation in a silicon wire at telecommunication wavelengths. Through dispersion engineering, we experimentally confirm a previously reported numerical study [1] and show that the emission of resonant radiation from the solitons can lead to the generation of a supercontinuum spanning over 500 nm. An excellent agreement with numerical simulations is observed.
