Characteristic ferroelectric domains and their dynamic behavior in ordered Pb(Sc$_{1/2}$Nb$_{1/2}$)O$_{3}$

Pb-based perovskites with multiple cations are fascinating materials showing various phenomena such as high piezoelectric, electromechanical, and relaxor properties. While chemical disordering accompanied by polar nanoregions and nanosized domains is commonly believed to cause the relaxor nature, little is known about ferroelectric microstructures of chemically ordered Pb-based perovskites. In this study, we discovered intriguing meandering ferroelectric domains in chemically ordered ferroelectric Pb(Sc$_{1/2}$Nb$_{1/2}$)O$_{3}$ using in-situ transmission electron microscopy with dark-field imaging. Observation results demonstrate that electric polarization can fluctuate around the [111] direction despite the formation of long-range ordered rhombohedral domains, which results in unique weak relaxor properties. In-situ imaging upon heating successfully reveals the dynamic behavior of domain-wall movements with lattice distortion and paraelectric-ferroelectric phase coexistence in the vicinity of the Curie temperature, indicating a discontinuous phase transition. Our research provides new insights into the effect of chemical ordering on ferroelectric nanodomains.

Nuclear and magnetic structure of an epitaxial La$_{0.67}$Sr$_{0.33}$MnO$_{3}$ film using diffraction methods

We use a combination of transmission electron microscopy, X-Ray and neutron diffraction, SQUID magnetometry and symmetry analysis to determine the nuclear and magnetic structure of an epitaxial LSMO film, deposited on a Si substrate. The film undergoes a magnetic ordering transition at 260K. At 300K, in the paramagnetic phase, the manganite film has a $I4/m$ space group. In the magnetic phase, SQUID and neutron diffraction results lead us to assign a ferromagnetic spin-order to the film, associated to magnetic moments with a slightly out-of-plane component, namely $(3.5, 0, 0.3)\,μ_B$. Symmetry analysis further shows that only the $P\bar 1'$ group is compatible with such a magnetic ordering.

Bulk charge density wave and electron-phonon coupling in superconducting copper oxychlorides

Bulk charge density waves are now reported in nearly all high-temperature superconducting cuprates, with the noticeable exception of one particular family: the copper oxychlorides. Here, we used resonant inelastic X-ray scattering to reveal a bulk charge density waves in these materials. Combining resonant inelastic X-ray scattering with non-resonant inelastic X-ray scattering, we investigate the interplay between the lattice excitations and the charge density wave, and evidence the phonon anomalies of the Cu-O bond-stretching mode at the charge density wave wave-vector. We propose that such electron-phonon anomalies occur in the presence of dispersive charge excitations emanating from the charge density wave and interacting with the Cu-O bond-stretching phonon. Our results pave the way for future studies, combining both bulk and surface probes, to investigate the static and dynamical properties of the charge density wave in the copper oxychloride family.

Precise control of $J_\mathrm{eff}=1/2$ magnetic properties in Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ epitaxial thin films by variation of strain and thin film thickness

We report on a comprehensive investigation of the effects of strain and film thickness on the structural and magnetic properties of epitaxial thin films of the prototypal $J_\mathrm{eff}=1/2$ compound Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ by advanced X-ray scattering. We find that the Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ thin films can be grown fully strained up to a thickness of 108 nm. By using X-ray resonant scattering, we show that the out-of-plane magnetic correlation length is strongly dependent on the thin film thickness, but independent of the strain state of the thin films. This can be used as a finely tuned dial to adjust the out-of-plane magnetic correlation length and transform the magnetic anisotropy from two-dimensional (2D) to three-dimensional (3D) behavior by incrementing film thickness. These results provide a clearer picture for the systematic control of the magnetic degrees of freedom in epitaxial thin films of Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ and bring to light the potential for a rich playground to explore the physics of $5d$-transition metal compounds.
