Optimal decay rates for linear kinetic equations in the half-space

We prove that solutions to linear kinetic equations in a half-space with absorbing boundary conditions decay for large times like $t^{-\frac{1}{2}-\frac{d}{4}}$ in a weighted $\sfL^{2}$ space and like $t^{-1-\frac{d}{2}}$ in a weighted $\sfL^{\infty}$ space, i.e., faster than in the whole space and in agreement with the decay of solutions to the heat equation in the half-space with Dirichlet conditions. The class of linear kinetic equations considered includes the linear relaxation equation, the kinetic Fokker-Planck equation and the Kolmogorov equation with spherical velocities associated with the kinetic Brownian motion.

Self-similarity and diffusive limits for linear kinetic equations: a Wild sum approach

We prove that linear collisional kinetic equations in the whole space without confinement mechanism display a long-time self-similar behaviour. This drastically improves the recently known results (decay estimates) about the solutions in such a context, providing the first result regarding this self-similar behaviour. As a consequence, we also establish a uniform-in-time convergence of the suitably rescaled solutions to their diffusion limit, which is also new. The class of equations considered includes some BGK type equations, some kinetic nonlocal Fokker--Planck-type equations and some kinetic (possibly fractional) Fokker--Planck equations, for which we are able to write explicitly solutions through a Wild sum (or Dyson series) or we can manage some accurate computations on the Fourier side.

Propagation of chaos for the homogeneous Boltzmann equation with moderately soft potentials

We show that the Kac particle system converges, as the number of particles tends to infinity, to the solution of the homogeneous Boltzmann equation, in the regime of moderately soft potentials, $γ\in (-2,0)$ with the common notation. This proves the propagation of chaos. We adapt the recent work of Imbert, Silvestre and Villani, to show that the Fisher information is nonincreasing in time along solutions to the Kac master equation. This estimate allows us to control the singularity of the interaction.

On the Krein-Rutman theorem and beyond

In this work, we revisit the Krein-Rutman theory for semigroups of positive operators in a Banach lattice framework and we provide some very general, efficient and handy results with constructive estimates about: the existence of a solution to the first eigentriplet problem; the geometry of the principal eigenvalue problem; the asymptotic stability of the first eigenvector with possible constructive rate of convergence. This abstract theory is motivated and illustrated by several examples of differential, integro-differential and integral operators. In particular, we revisit the first eigenvalue problem and the asymptotic stability of the first eigenvector for: some parabolic equations in a bounded domain and in the whole space; some transport equations in a bounded or unbounded domain, including some growth-fragmentation models and some kinetic models; the kinetic Fokker-Planck equation in the torus and in the whole space; some mutation-selection models.

The Kinetic Fokker-Planck equation in a domain: Ultracontractivity, hypocoercivity and long-time asymptotic behavior

We consider the Kinetic Fokker-Planck (FKP) equation in a domain with Maxwell reflection condition on the boundary. We establish the ultracontractivity of the associated semigroup and the hypocoercivity of the associated operator. We deduce the convergence with constructive rate of the solution to the KFP equation towards the stationary state with same mass as the initial datum.

On the self-similar stability of the parabolic-parabolic Keller-Segel equation

We consider the parabolic-parabolic Keller-Segel equation in the plane and prove the nonlinear exponential stability of the self-similar profile in a quasi parabolic-elliptic regime. We first perform a perturbation argument in order to obtain exponential stability for the semigroup associated to part of the first component of the linearized operator, by exploiting the exponential stability of the linearized operator for the parabolic-elliptic Keller-Segel equation. We finally employ a purely semigroup analysis to prove linear, and then nonlinear, exponential stability of the system in appropriated functional spaces.

On the Voltage-Conductance kinetic equation

We consider the nonlinear Voltage-Conductance kinetic equation arising in neuroscience. We establish the existence of solutions in a weighted $L^\infty$ framework in a weak interaction regime. We also prove the linear asymptotic exponential stability of the steady state making constructive a recent estimate of Xu'an Dou et al. (2023). Both results are based in a fundamental way on some ultracontractivity property of theflow associated to the linear (possibly time dependent) Voltage-Conductance kinetic equation.

The Landau equation in a domain

This work deals with the Landau equation in a bounded domain with the Maxwell reflection condition on the boundary for any (possibly smoothly position dependent) accommodation coefficient and for the full range of interaction potentials, including the Coulomb case. We establish the global existence and a constructive asymptotic decay of solutions in a close-to-equilibrium regime. This is the first existence result for a Maxwell reflection condition on the boundary and that generalizes the similar results established for the Landau equation for other geometries in \cite{GuoLandau1,GS1,GS2,MR3625186,MR4076068}. We also answer to Villani's program \cite{MR2116276,MR2407976} about constructive accurate rate of convergence to the equilibrium {(quantitative H-Theorem)} for solutions to collisional kinetic equations satisfying a priori uniform bounds. The proofs rely on the study of a suitably linear problem for which we prove that the associated operator is hypocoercive, the associated semigroup is ultracontractive, and finally that it is asymptotically stable in many weighted $L^\infty$ spaces.

Special macroscopic modes and hypocoercivity

We study linear inhomogeneous kinetic equations with an external confining potential and a collision operator admitting several local conservation laws (local density, momentum and energy). We classify all special macroscopic modes (stationary solutions and time-periodic solutions). We also prove the convergence of all solutions of the evolution equation to such non-trivial modes, with a quantitative exponential rate. This is the first hypocoercivity result with multiple special macroscopic modes with constructive estimates depending on the geometry of the potential.

Harris-type results on geometric and subgeometric convergence to equilibrium for stochastic semigroups

We provide simple and constructive proofs of Harris-type theorems on the existence and uniqueness of an equilibrium and the speed of equilibration of discrete-time and continuous-time stochastic semigroups. Our results apply both to cases where the relaxation speed is exponential (also called geometric) and to those with no spectral gap, with non-exponential speeds (also called subgeometric). We give constructive estimates in the subgeometric case and discrete-time statements which seem both to be new. The method of proof also differs from previous works, based on semigroup and interpolation arguments, valid for both geometric and subgeometric cases with essentially the same ideas. In particular, we present very simple new proofs of the geometric case.

Hypocoercivity for kinetic linear equations in bounded domains with general Maxwell boundary condition

We establish the convergence to the equilibrium for various linear collisional kinetic equations (including linearized Boltzmann and Landau equations) with physical local conservation laws in bounded domains with general Maxwell boundary condition. Our proof consists in establishing an hypocoercivity result for the associated operator, in other words, we exhibit a convenient Hilbert norm for which the associated operator is coercive in the orthogonal of the global conservation laws. Our approach allows us to treat general domains with all type of boundary conditions in a unified framework. In particular, our result includes the case of vanishing accommodation coefficient and thus the specific case of the specular reflection boundary condition.

Weighted Korn and Poincaré-Korn inequalities in the Euclidean space and associated operators

We prove functional inequalities on vector fields on the Euclidean space when it is equipped with a bounded measure that satisfies a Poincaré inequality, and study associated self-adjoint operators. The weighted Korn inequality compares the differential matrix, once projected orthogonally to certain finite-dimensional spaces, with its symmetric part and, in an improved form of the inequality, an additional term. We also consider Poincaré-Korn inequalities for estimating a projection of the vector field by the symmetric part of the differential matrix and zeroth-order versions of these inequalities obtained using the Witten-Laplace operator. The constants depend on geometric properties of the potential and the estimates are quantitative and constructive. These inequalities are motivated by kinetic theory and related with the Korn inequality (1906) in mechanics, on a bounded domain.

The Fokker-Planck equation with subcritical confinement force

We consider the Fokker-Planck equation with subcritical confinement force field which may not derive from a potential function. We prove the existence of an equilibrium (in the case of a general force) and we establish some (polynomial and stretch exponential) rate of convergence to the equilibrium (depending on the space to which belongs the initial datum). Our results improve similar results established by Toscani, Villani [29] and R{ö}chner , Wang [27]: the force field is more general, the spaces are more general, the rates are sharper.

Hypocoercivity without confinement

In this paper, hypocoercivity methods are applied to linear kinetic equations with mass conservation and without confinement, in order to prove that the solutions have an algebraic decay rate in the long-time range, which the same as the rate of the heat equation. Two alternative approaches are developed: an analysis based on decoupled Fourier modes and a direct approach where, instead of the Poincaré inequality for the Dirichlet form, Nash's inequality is employed. The first approach is also used to provide a simple proof of exponential decay to equilibrium on the flat torus. The results are obtained on a space with exponential weights and then extended to larger function spaces by a factorization method. The optimality of the rates is discussed. Algebraic rates of decay on the whole space are improved when the initial datum has moment cancellations.

Weak and strong connectivity regimes for a general time elapsed neuron network model

For large fully connected neuron networks, we study the dynamics of homogenous assemblies of interacting neurons described by time elapsed models. Under general assumptions on the firing rate which include the ones made in previous works [7, 8, 6], we establish accurate estimate on the long time behavior of the solutions in the weak and the strong connectivity regime both in the case with and without delay. Our results improve [7, 8] where a less accurate estimate was established and [6] where only smooth firing rates were considered. Our approach combines several arguments introduced in the above previous works as well as a slightly refined version of the Weyl's and spectral mapping theorems presented in [13, 4].

Landau equation for very soft and Coulomb potentials near Maxwellians

This work deals with the Landau equation for very soft and Coulomb potentials near the associated Maxwellian equilibrium. We first investigate the corresponding linearized operator and develop a method to prove stability estimates of its associated semigroup in large functional spaces. We then deduce existence, uniqueness and fast decay of the solutions to the nonlinear equation in a close-to-equilibrium framework. Our result drastically improves the set of initial data compared to the one considered by Guo and Strain who established similar results in [21, 37, 38]. Our functional framework is compatible with the non perturbative frameworks developed by Villani, Desvillettes and co-authors [42, 17, 16, 13], and our main result then makes possible to improve the speed of convergence to the equilibrium established therein.

Uniqueness and long time asymptotics for the parabolic-parabolic Keller-Segel equation

The present paper deals with the parabolic-parabolic Keller-Segel equation in the plane inthe general framework of weak (or "free energy") solutions associated to an initial datum with finite mass $M\textless{} 8π$, finite second log-moment and finite entropy. The aim of the paper is twofold:(1) We prove the uniqueness of the "free energy" solution. The proof uses a DiPerna-Lions renormalizing argument which makes possible to get the "optimal regularity" as well as an estimate of the difference of two possible solutions in the critical $L^{4/3}$ Lebesgue norm similarly as for the $2d$ vorticity Navier-Stokes equation. (2) We prove a radially symmetric and polynomial weighted $L^2$ exponential stability of the self-similar profile in the quasi parabolic-elliptic regime. The proof is based on a perturbation argument which takes advantage of the exponential stability of the self-similar profile for the parabolic-elliptic Keller-Segel equation established by Campos-Dolbeault and Egana-Mischler.

Uniform semigroup spectral analysis of the discrete, fractional \& classical Fokker-Planck equations

In this paper, we investigate the spectral analysis (from the point of view of semi-groups) of discrete, fractional and classical Fokker-Planck equations. Discrete and fractional Fokker-Planck equations converge in some sense to the classical one. As a consequence, we first deal with discrete and classical Fokker-Planck equations in a same framework, proving uniform spectral estimates using a perturbation argument and an enlargement argument. Then, we do a similar analysis for fractional and classical Fokker-Planck equations using an argument of enlargement of the space in which the semigroup decays. We also handle another class of discrete Fokker-Planck equations which converge to the fractional Fokker-Planck one, we are also able to treat these equations in a same framework from the spectral analysis viewpoint, still with a semigroup approach and thanks to a perturbative argument combined with an enlargement one. Let us emphasize here that we improve the perturbative argument introduced in [7] and developed in [11], relaxing the hypothesis of the theorem, enlarging thus the class of operators which fulfills the assumptions required to apply it.
