Rate of convergence to self-similarity for Smoluchowski's coagulation equation with constant coefficients

We show that solutions to Smoluchowski's equation with a constant coagulation kernel and an initial datum with some regularity and exponentially decaying tail converge exponentially fast to a self-similar profile. This convergence holds in a weighted Sobolev norm which implies the L\^2 convergence of derivatives up to a certain order k depending on the regularity of the initial condition. We prove these results through the study of the linearized coagulation equation in self-similar variables, for which we show a spectral gap in a scale of weighted Sobolev spaces. We also take advantage of the fact that the Laplace or Fourier transforms of this equation can be explicitly solved in this case.

Fractional diffusion limit for collisional kinetic equations

This paper is devoted to diffusion limits of linear Boltzmann equations. When the equilibrium distribution function is Maxwellian distribution, it is well known that for an appropriate time scale, the small mean free path limit gives rise to a diffusion equation. In this paper, we consider situations in which the equilibrium distribution function is a heavy-tailed distribution with infinite variance. We then show that for an appropriate time scale, the small mean free path limit gives rise to a fractional diffusion equation.

Stability, convergence to the steady state and elastic limit for the Boltzmann equation for diffusively excited granular media

We consider a space-homogeneous gas of {\it inelastic hard spheres}, with a {\it diffusive term} representing a random background forcing (in the framework of so-called {\em constant normal restitution coefficients} $α\in [0,1]$ for the inelasticity). In the physical regime of a small inelasticity (that is $α\in [α_*,1)$ for some constructive $α_* \in [0,1)$) we prove uniqueness of the stationary solution for given values of the restitution coefficient $α\in [α_*,1)$, the mass and the momentum, and we give various results on the linear stability and nonlinear stability of this stationary solution.

Stability, convergence to self-similarity and elastic limit for the Boltzmann equation for inelastic hard spheres

We consider the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation for {\em inelastic hard spheres}, in the framework of so-called {\em constant normal restitution coefficients} $α\in [0,1]$. In the physical regime of a small inelasticity (that is $α\in [α_*,1)$ for some constructive $α_*>0$) we prove uniqueness of the self-similar profile for given values of the restitution coefficient $α\in [α_*,1)$, the mass and the momentum; therefore we deduce the uniqueness of the self-similar solution (up to a time translation). Moreover, if the initial datum lies in $L^1_3$, and under some smallness condition on $(1-α_*)$ depending on the mass, energy and $L^1_3$ norm of this initial datum, we prove time asymptotic convergence (with polynomial rate) of the solution towards the self-similar solution (the so-called {\em homogeneous cooling state}). These uniqueness, stability and convergence results are expressed in the self-similar variables and then translate into corresponding results for the original Boltzmann equation. The proofs are based on the identification of a suitable elastic limit rescaling, and the construction of a smooth path of self-similar profiles connecting to a particular Maxwellian equilibrium in the elastic limit, together with tools from perturbative theory of linear operators. Some universal quantities, such as the "quasi-elastic self-similar temperature" and the rate of convergence towards self-similarity at first order in terms of $(1-α)$, are obtained from our study. These results provide a positive answer and a mathematical proof of the Ernst-Brito conjecture [16] in the case of inelastic hard spheres with small inelasticity.

Cooling process for inelastic Boltzmann equations for hard spheres, Part I: The Cauchy problem

We develop the Cauchy theory of the spatially homogeneous inelastic Boltzmann equation for hard spheres, for a general form of collision rate which includes in particular variable restitution coefficients depending on the kinetic energy and the relative velocity as well as the sticky particles model. We prove (local in time) non-concentration estimates in Orlicz spaces, from which we deduce weak stability and existence theorem. Strong stability together with uniqueness and instantaneous appearance of exponential moments are proved under additional smoothness assumption on the initial datum, for a restricted class of collision rates. Concerning the long-time behaviour, we give conditions for the cooling process to occur or not in finite time.

Cooling process for inelastic Boltzmann equations for hard spheres, Part II: Self-similar solutions and tail behavior

We consider the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation for inelastic hard spheres, in the framework of so-called constant normal restitution coefficients. We prove the existence of self-similar solutions, and we give pointwise estimates on their tail. We also give general estimates on the tail and the regularity of generic solutions. In particular we prove Haff 's law on the rate of decay of temperature, as well as the algebraic decay of singularities. The proofs are based on the regularity study of a rescaled problem, with the help of the regularity properties of the gain part of the Boltzmann collision integral, well-known in the elastic case, and which are extended here in the context of granular gases.
