Inclusion Statistics

We present a historical review of anyon and exclusion statistics, introduced in the 1980s and 1990s respectively, and then turn to developments in the recently introduced inclusion statistics. In contrast to exclusion statistics, where particles tend to be more exclusive than usual fermions, inclusion statistics particles tend to be more gregarious than usual bosons and manifest an enhanced propensity to form condensates. Inclusion and exclusion statistics are related through a duality transformation, generalizing the well-known Bose-Fermi duality. We conclude with a review of the Calogero model realization of exclusion statistics and its extension to inclusion statistics.

Inclusion statistics and particle condensation in 2 dimensions

We propose a new type of quantum statistics, which we call inclusion statistics, in which particles tend to coalesce more than ordinary bosons. Inclusion statistics is defined in analogy with exclusion statistics, in which statistical exclusion is stronger than in Fermi statistics, but now extrapolating beyond Bose statistics, resulting in statistical inclusion. A consequence of inclusion statistics is that the lowest space dimension in which particles can condense in the absence of potentials is $d=2$, unlike $d=3$ for the usual Bose-Einstein condensation. This reduction in the dimension happens for any inclusion stronger than bosons, and the critical temperature increases with stronger inclusion. Possible physical realizations of inclusion statistics involving attractive interactions between bosons may be experimentally achievable.

Combinatorics of generalized Dyck and Motzkin paths

We relate the combinatorics of periodic generalized Dyck and Motzkin paths to the cluster coefficients of particles obeying generalized exclusion statistics, and obtain explicit expressions for the counting of paths with a fixed number of steps of each kind at each vertical coordinate. A class of generalized compositions of the integer path length emerges in the analysis.

Algebraic area enumeration of random walks on the honeycomb lattice

We study the enumeration of closed walks of given length and algebraic area on the honeycomb lattice. Using an irreducible operator realization of honeycomb lattice moves, we map the problem to a Hofstadter-like Hamiltonian and show that the generating function of closed walks maps to the grand partition function of a system of particles with exclusion statistics of order $g=2$ and an appropriate spectrum, along the lines of a connection previously established by two of the authors. Reinterpreting the results in terms of the standard Hofstadter spectrum calls for a mixture of $g=1$ (fermion) and $g=2$ exclusion whose physical meaning and properties require further elucidation. In this context we also obtain some unexpected Fibonacci sequences within the weights of the combinatorial factors appearing in the counting of walks.

Hamiltonian and exclusion statistics approach to discrete forward-moving paths

We use a Hamiltonian (transition matrix) description of height-restricted Dyck paths on the plane in which generating functions for the paths arise as matrix elements of the propagator to evaluate the length and area generating function for paths with arbitrary starting and ending points, expressing it as a rational combination of determinants. Exploiting a connection between random walks and quantum exclusion statistics that we previously established, we express this generating function in terms of grand partition functions for exclusion particles in a finite harmonic spectrum and present an alternative, simpler form for its logarithm that makes its polynomial structure explicit.

Exclusion statistics for particles with a discrete spectrum

We formulate and study the microscopic statistical mechanics of systems of particles with exclusion statistics in a discrete one-body spectrum. The statistical mechanics of these systems can be expressed in terms of effective single-level grand partition functions obeying a generalization of the standard thermodynamic exclusion statistics equation of state. We derive explicit expressions for the thermodynamic potential in terms of microscopic cluster coefficients and show that the mean occupation numbers of levels satisfy a nesting relation involving a number of adjacent levels determined by the exclusion parameter. We apply the formalism to the harmonic Calogero model and point out a relation with the Ramanujan continued fraction identity and appropriate generalizations.

A shifted binomial theorem and trigonometric series

We introduce a shifted version of the binomial theorem, and use it to study some remarkable trigonometric integrals and their explicit rewriting in terms of binomial multiple sums. Motivated by the expressions of area generating functions arising in the counting of closed walks on various lattices, we propose similar sums involving fractional values of the area and show that they are closely related to their integer counterparts and lead to rational sequences converging to powers of $π$. Our results, other than their mathematical interest, could be relevant to generalizations of statistical mechanical models of the Heisenberg chain type involving higher spins or $SU(N)$ degrees of freedom.

Combinatorics of Multicompositions

Integer compositions with certain colored parts were introduced by Andrews in 2007 to address a number-theoretic problem. Integer compositions allowing zero as some parts were introduced by Ouvry and Polychronakos in 2019. We give a bijection between these two varieties of compositions and determine various combinatorial properties of these multicompositions. In particular, we determine the count of multicompositions by number of all parts, number of positive parts, and number of zeros. Then, working from three types of compositions with restricted parts that are counted by the Fibonacci sequence, we find the sequences counting multicompositions with analogous restrictions. With these tools, we give combinatorial proofs of summation formulas for generalizations of the Jacobsthal and Pell sequences.

Lattice walk area combinatorics, some remarkable trigonometric sums and Apéry-like numbers

Explicit algebraic area enumeration formulae are derived for various lattice walks generalizing the canonical square lattice walk, and in particular for the triangular lattice chiral walk recently introduced by the authors. A key element in the enumeration is the derivation of some remarkable identities involving trigonometric sums --which are also important building blocks of non trivial quantum models such as the Hofstadter model-- and their explicit rewriting in terms of multiple binomial sums. An intriguing connection is also made with number theory and some classes of Apéry-like numbers, the cousins of the Apéry numbers which play a central role in irrationality considerations for ζ(2) and ζ(3).

Two anyons on the sphere: nonlinear states and spectrum

We study the energy spectrum of two anyons on the sphere in a constant magnetic field. Making use of rotational invariance we reduce the energy eigenvalue equation to a system of linear differential equations for functions of a single variable, a reduction analogous to separating center of mass and relative coordinates on the plane. We solve these equations by a generalization of the Frobenius method and derive numerical results for the energies of non-analytically derivable states.

Hofstadter point spectrum trace and the Almost Mathieu operator

We consider point spectrum traces in the Hofstadter model. We show how to recover the full quantum Hofstadter trace by integrating these point spectrum traces with the appropriate free density of states on the lattice. This construction is then generalized to the almost Mathieu operator and its n-th moments which can be expressed in terms of generalized Kreft coefficients.

Statistics of two-dimensional random walks, the "cyclic sieving phenomenon" and the Hofstadter model

We focus on the algebraic area probability distribution of planar random walks on a square lattice with $m_1$, $m_2$, $l_1$ and $l_2$ steps right, left, up and down. We aim, in particular, at the algebraic area generating function $Z_{m_1,m_2,l_1,l_2}(Q)$ evaluated at $Q=e^{2ıπ\over q}$, a root of unity, when both $m_1-m_2$ and $l_1-l_2$ are multiples of $q$. In the simple case of staircase walks, a geometrical interpretation of $Z_{m,0,l,0}(e^\frac{2iπ}{q})$ in terms of the cyclic sieving phenomenon is illustrated. Then, an expression for $Z_{m_1,m_2,l_1,l_2}(-1)$, which is relevant to the Stembridge's case, is proposed. Finally, the related problem of evaluating the n-th moments of the Hofstadter Hamiltonian in the commensurate case is addressed.

Exact results for the spectra of interacting bosons and fermions on the lowest Landau level

A system of N interacting bosons or fermions in a two-dimensional harmonic potential (or, equivalently, magnetic field) whose states are projected onto the lowest Landau level is considered. Generic expressions are derived for matrix elements of any interaction, in the basis of angular momentum eigenstates. For the fermion "ground state" (N=1 Laughlin state), this makes it possible to exactly calculate its energy all the way up to the mesoscopic regime N ~ 1000. It is also shown that for N = 3 and Coulomb interaction, several rational low-lying values of energy exist, for bosons and fermions alike.

Area distribution of two-dimensional random walks on a square lattice

The algebraic area probability distribution of closed planar random walks of length N on a square lattice is considered. The generating function for the distribution satisfies a recurrence relation in which the combinatorics is encoded. A particular case generalizes the q-binomial theorem to the case of three addends. The distribution fits the Lévy probability distribution for Brownian curves with its first-order 1/N correction quite well, even for N rather small.

Random Aharonov-Bohm vortices and some exact families of integrals: Part II

At 6th order in perturbation theory, the random magnetic impurity problem at second order in impurity density narrows down to the evaluation of a single Feynman diagram with maximal impurity line crossing. This diagram can be rewritten as a sum of ordinary integrals and nested double integrals of products of the modified Bessel functions $K_ν$ and $I_ν$, with $ν=0,1$. That sum, in turn, is shown to be a linear combination with rational coefficients of $(2^5-1)ζ(5)$, $\int_0^{\infty} u K_0(u)^6 du$ and $\int_0^{\infty} u^3 K_0(u)^6 du$. Unlike what happens at lower orders, these two integrals are not linear combinations with rational coefficients of Euler sums, even though they appear in combination with $ζ(5)$. On the other hand, any integral $\int_0^{\infty} u^{n+1} K_0(u)^p (uK_1(u))^q du$ with weight $p+q=6$ and an even $n$ is shown to be a linear combination with rational coefficients of the above two integrals and 1, a result that can be easily generalized to any weight $p+q=k$. A matrix recurrence relation in $n$ is built for such integrals. The initial conditions are such that the asymptotic behavior is determined by the smallest eigenvalue of the transition matrix.

The Nonperiodic Anyon Model and the Fractional Quantum Hall Effect

The lowest-Landau-level anyon model becomes nonperiodic in the statistics parameter when the finite size of the attached flux tubes is taken into account. The finite-size effects cause the inverse proportional relation between the critical filling factor and the statistics parameter to be nonperiodically continued in the screening regime, where the fluxes are anti-parallel to the external magnetic field -- at critical filling, the external magnetic field is entirely screened by the mean magnetic field associated with the flux tubes. A clustering argument is proposed to select particular values of the statistics parameter. In this way, IQHE and FQHE fillings are obtained in terms of gapped nondegenerate LLL-anyonic wave functions. Jain's series are reproduced without the need to populate higher Landau levels. New FQHE series are proposed, like, in particular, the particle-hole complementary series of the Laughlin one. For fast-rotating Bose-Einstein condensates, a corresponding clustering argument yields particular fractional filling series.

Exact results for the Spectra of Bosons and Fermions with Contact Interaction

An N-body bosonic model with delta-contact interactions projected on the lowest Landau level is considered. For a given number of particles in a given angular momentum sector, any energy level can be obtained exactly by means of diagonalizing a finite matrix: they are roots of algebraic equations. A complete solution of the three-body problem is presented, some general properties of the N-body spectrum are pointed out, and a number of novel exact analytic eigenstates are obtained. The FQHE N-fermion model with Laplacian-delta interactions is also considered along the same lines of analysis. New exact eigenstates are proposed, along with the Slater determinant, whose eigenvalues are shown to be related to Catalan numbers.

Quantum Mechanics of a Particle with Two Magnetic Impurities

A two-dimensional quantum mechanical system consisting of a particle coupled to two magnetic impurities of different strengths, in a harmonic potential, is considered. Topological boundary conditions at impurity locations imply that the wave functions are linear combinations of two-dimensional harmonics. A number of low-lying states are computed numerically, and the qualitative features of the spectrum are analyzed.
