Topological band structure of excitons in octochlore KTb$_{3}$F$_{10}$: an analog of the Luttinger Semimetal

Understanding the symmetry and topology of band structures in crystalline solids has been among the defining themes of a generation of condensed matter physicists, with implications across many different platforms including electronic bands, photonic crystals, phonons and magnetic excitations. In the latter systems, there is usually magnetic long-range order and time reversal symmetry breaking. Here we further enrich the possible band structures available to magnetic systems by examining dispersive crystal field excitations above a ground state that is a simple product of singlets. In these systems, there is an interplay of magnetic interactions and band topology with both crystal and time reversal symmetries. Using high-resolution neutron spectroscopy we reveal the dispersion relations of bosonic excitons in KTb$_{3}$F$_{10}$, an experimental realization of the octochlore lattice. We show that there are pinch point features in the scattering intensity. The dominant coupling in this system is the long-range magnetostatic dipolar interaction, whose singularity at the zone center is passed onto the scattering intensity. However, the pinch points survive when the range of the dipoles is truncated to finite shell number in the form of a three-band quadratic band touching protected by cubic symmetry. This model, which is related to the Luttinger semi-metal, provides a general long wavelength model for the emergence of pinch point scattering intensity encompassing also the true long-range dipolar model.

Incipient modulated phase in Sr$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$TiO$_3$

Nanometer-scale modulations can spontaneously emerge in complex materials when multiple degrees of freedom interact. Here we demonstrate that ferroelectric Sr$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$TiO$_3$ lies in close proximity to an incipient structurally modulated phase. Using inelastic neutron and X-ray scattering, we show that upon cooling, dipolar fluctuations strongly couple to and soften the $c_{44}$ transverse acoustic mode. We identify the wavevector at which this softening is maximal, thereby defining the characteristic length scale of the modulation. Calcium substitution enhances both the amplitude and the wavevector of the softening by strengthening the ferroelectric and antiferrodistortive instabilities. Our results demonstrate that nonlinear flexoelectric phonon coupling tends to stabilize a modulated state that cooperates with, rather than competes against, the other lattice instabilities in SrTiO$_3$.

Mesoscopic tunneling in strontium titanate

Spatial correlation between atoms can generate a depletion in the energy dispersion of acoustic phonons. Two well known examples are rotons in superfluid helium and the Kohn anomaly in metals. Here we report on the observation of a large softening of the transverse acoustic mode in quantum paraelectric SrTiO$_3$ by means of inelastic neutron scattering. In contrast to other known cases, this softening occurs at a tiny wave vector implying spatial correlation extending over a distance as long as 40 lattice parameters. We attribute this to the formation of mesoscopic fluctuating domains due to the coupling between local strain and quantum ferroelectric fluctuations. Thus, a hallmark of the ground state of insulating SrTiO$_3$ is the emergence of hybridized optical-acoustic phonons. Mesoscopic fluctuating domains play a role in quantum tunneling, which impedes the emergence of a finite macroscopic polarisation.

Spin dynamics in the square-lattice cupola system Ba(TiO)Cu$_4$(PO$_4$)$_4$

We report high-resolution single-crystal inelastic neutron scattering measurements on the spin-1/2 antiferromagnet Ba(TiO)Cu$_4$(PO$_4$)$_4$. This material is formed from layers of four-site \cupola" structures, oriented alternately upwards and downwards, which constitute a rather special realization of two-dimensional (2D) square-lattice magnetism. The strong Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction within each cupola, or plaquette, unit has a geometry largely unexplored among the numerous studies of magnetic properties in 2D Heisenberg models with spin and spatial anisotropies. We have measured the magnetic excitations at zero field and in fields up to 5 T, finding a complex mode structure with multiple characteristic features that allow us to extract all the relevant magnetic interactions by modelling within the linear spin-wave approximation. We demonstrate that Ba(TiO)Cu$_4$(PO$_4$)$_4$ is a checkerboard system with almost equal intra- and inter-plaquette couplings, in which the intra-plaquette DM interaction is instrumental both in enforcing robust magnetic order and in opening a large gap at the Brillouin-zone center. We place our observations in the perspective of generalized phase diagrams for spin-1/2 square-lattice models and materials, where exploring anisotropies and frustration as routes to quantum disorder remains a frontier research problem.

Solitonic excitations in the Ising anisotropic chain BaCo2V2O8 under large transverse magnetic field

We study the dynamics of the quasi-one-dimensional Ising-Heisenberg antiferromagnet BaCo2V2O8 under a transverse magnetic field. Combining inelastic neutron scattering experiments and theoretical analyses by field theories and numerical simulations, we mainly elucidate the structure of the spin excitation spectrum in the high field phase, appearing above the quantum phase transition point mu0Hc ~ 10 T. We find that it is characterized by collective solitonic excitations superimposed on a continuum. These solitons are strongly bound in pairs due to the effective staggered field induced by the nondiagonal g tensor of the compound, and are topologically different from the fractionalized spinons in the weak field region. The dynamical susceptibility numerically calculated with the infinite time-evolving block decimation method shows an excellent agreement with the measured spectra, which enables us to identify the dispersion branches with elementary excitations. The lowest energy dispersion has an incommensurate nature and has a local minimum at an irrational wave number due to the applied transverse field.

Magnetic structure and spin waves in the frustrated ferro-antiferromagnet Pb$_2$VO(PO$_4$)$_2$

Single crystal neutron diffraction, inelastic neutron scattering and electron spin resonance experiments are used to study the magnetic structure and spin waves in Pb$_2$VO(PO$_4$)$_2$, a prototypical layered $S=1/2$ ferromagnet with frustrating next nearest neighbor antiferromagnetic interactions. The observed excitation spectrum is found to be inconsistent with a simple square lattice model previously proposed for this material. At least four distinct exchange coupling constants are required to reproduce the measured spin wave dispersion. The degree of magnetic frustration is correspondingly revised and found to be substantially smaller than in all previous estimates.

Evidence for Coexistence of Bulk Superconductivity and Itinerant Antiferromagnetism in the Heavy Fermion System CeCo(In$_{1-x}$Cd$_x$)$_5$

In the generic phase diagram of heavy fermion systems, tuning an external parameter such as hydrostatic or chemical pressure modifies the superconducting transition temperature. The superconducting phase forms a dome in the temperature-tuning parameter phase diagram, which is associated with a maximum of the superconducting pairing interaction. Proximity to antiferromagnetism suggests a relation between the disappearance of antiferromagnetic order and superconductivity. We combine muon spin rotation, neutron scattering, and x-ray absorption spectroscopy techniques to gain access to the magnetic and electronic structure of CeCo(In$_{1-x}$Cd$_x$)$_5$ at different time scales. Different magnetic structures are obtained that indicate a magnetic order of itinerant character, coexisting with bulk superconductivity. The suppression of the antiferromagnetic order appears to be driven by a modification of the bandwidth/carrier concentration, implying that the electronic structure and consequently the interplay of superconductivity and magnetism is strongly affected by hydrostatic and chemical pressure.
