Field-Widened Multimode Interferometer with Long Time-Bin Delay Using a Multi-Pass Herriott Cell

Interference of optical signals in free-space channels requires optical receivers to support many spatial modes due to atmospheric turbulence, typically necessitating adaptive optics systems. Field-widened interferometers offer a passive alternative, making them particularly attractive for time-bin encoded signals with delays on the order of one nanosecond. Here, we demonstrate a field-widened, multimode interferometer design that achieves a high interference visibility for spatially multimode beams with large time bin separations. The interference of the multimode beams is enabled using a multi-pass Herriott cell that enables a very long path separation with a small form-factor. The design is tested using both numerical ray-tracing simulations and proof-of-principle demonstrations. We create a prototype interferometer with a path length difference of 12ns and determine that it maintains a high interference visibility with a large field-of-view of $0.4^{\circ}$.

A Universal Quantum Information Preserving Photonic Switch for Scalable Quantum Networks

Quantum networks are a keystone of the quantum internet. However, existing implementations remain largely confined to static point-to-point links due to the absence of a switching paradigm capable of dynamically routing fragile quantum entanglement without introducing decoherence. Here, we propose the Universal Quantum Switch, a foundational building block allowing on-demand, non-blocking, and encoding-agnostic routing of quantum information, as well as seamless modality conversion between disparate quantum platforms. We develop a prototype in thin-film lithium niobate and experimentally demonstrate robust switching with $\le 4\%$ decoherence via thermo-optic modulation and high-speed electro-optic switching of arbitrary entangled states at 1 MHz. Moreover, we show that our platform can support reconfiguration speeds up to 1 GHz. To our knowledge, this work represents the first demonstration of multi-node dynamic entanglement distribution at these speeds. Complementing these experimental results, we project the architecture's scalability, showing dimension-independent decoherence, and provide a scalable, interoperable building block for heterogeneous quantum network fabrics.

Time-resolved certification of frequency-bin entanglement over multi-mode channels

Frequency-bin entangled photons can be efficiently produced on-chip which offers a scalable, robust and low-footprint platform for quantum communication, particularly well-suited for resource-constrained settings such as mobile or satellite-based systems. However, analyzing such entangled states typically requires active and lossy components, limiting scalability and multi-mode compatibility. We demonstrate a novel technique for processing frequency-encoded photons using linear interferometry and time-resolved detection. Our approach is fully passive and compatible with spatially multi-mode light, making it suitable for free-space and satellite to ground applications. As a proof-of-concept, we utilize frequency-bin entangled photons generated from a high-brightness multi-resonator source integrated on-chip to show the ability to perform arbitrary projective measurements over both single- and multi-mode channels. We report the first measurement of the joint temporal intensity between frequency-bin entangled photons, which allows us to certify entanglement by violating the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt (CHSH) inequality, with a measured value of $|S|=2.32\pm0.05$ over multi-mode fiber. By combining time-resolved detection with energy-correlation measurements, we perform full quantum state tomography, yielding a state fidelity of up to $91\%$. We further assess our ability to produce non-classical states via a violation of time-energy entropic uncertainty relations and investigate the feasibility of a quantum key distribution protocol. Our work establishes a resource-efficient and scalable approach toward the deployment of robust frequency-bin entanglement over free-space and satellite-based links.

Demonstration of a reconfigurable quantum network architecture suitable for ground-to-space communication

We experimentally demonstrate a reconfigurable quantum network architecture suitable for integrating satellite links in metropolitan quantum networks. The network architecture is designed such that once a satellite is in range, it is configured in a multipoint-to-point topology where all ground nodes establish entanglement with the satellite receiver using time multiplexing to optimize long-distance transmission. Otherwise, the satellite up-link can be rerouted to the ground nodes to form a pair-wise ground network. Leveraging both the time and frequency correlations of our photon-pair source, we demonstrate an increased coincidence-to-accidental ratio without additional resource overhead in a five-node network. To contextualize these experimental findings, we project their performance in a quantum key distribution scenario and outline a feasible route toward field deployment, using integrated photonics to enable network integration of up to 72 users.

Towards Fully Passive Time-Bin Quantum Key Distribution over Moving Free-Space Channels

Encoding quantum information in photonic time-bin states is typically considered impractical for moving free-space quantum communication due to the difficulties with phase stabilization of distant quantum time-bin interferometers and turbulence of free-space channels. We demonstrate a novel approach using reference frame independent time-bin quantum key distribution that completely avoids the need for active relative phase stabilization while simultaneously overcoming a highly multi-mode channel without any active mode filtering. This scheme enables passive, self-compensating time-bin quantum communication without any mode filtering, mode sorting, adaptive optics, active basis selection, or active phase alignment. We realize a proof-of-concept demonstration using hybrid polarization and time-bin entangled photons that demonstrates a sustained asymptotic secure key rate greater than 0.07 bits/coincidence over a 15m multi-mode fiber optical channel and showing entanglement correlations over a moving 38.5dB loss free-space channel, including system losses. The scheme simplifies the use of time-bin encoding and can be readily applied over various spatially multi-mode and fluctuating channels involving rapidly moving platforms, including airborne and satellite systems.

Feasibility study of frequency-encoded photonic qubits over a free-space channel

Frequency-bin quantum encoding shows great promise for quantum communication given its high-dimensional scaling, compatibility with photonic integrated circuits and synergy with classical optical communication technology. However, to date all demonstrations have been performed over single-mode and static channels, while the transmission over fluctuating and turbulent channels has not been addressed. We propose and demonstrate a novel approach that leverages field-widened interferometers to decode frequency-bins transmitted over free-space channels without any adaptive optics or modal filtering. Moreover, we investigate the phase stability requirements so that frequency-bin encoding could be feasible for satellite to ground quantum links. Our passive approach expands the versatility of frequency-bin encoding, paving the way towards long-range and fluctuating channels.

A reconfigurable entanglement distribution network suitable for connecting multiple ground nodes with a satellite

Satellite-based quantum communication channels are important for ultra-long distances. Given the short duration of a satellite pass, it can be challenging to efficiently connect multiple users of a city-wide network while the satellite is passing over that area. We propose a network with dual-functionality: during a brief satellite pass, the ground network is configured as a multipoint-to-point topology where all ground nodes establish entanglement with a satellite receiver. During times when this satellite is not available, the satellite up-link is rerouted via a single optical switch to the ground nodes, and the network is configured as a pair-wise ground network. We numerically simulate a pulsed hyper-entangled photon source and study the performance of the proposed network configurations for quantum key distribution. We find favourable scaling in the case that the satellite receiver exploits time-multiplexing whereas the ground nodes utilize frequency-multiplexing. The scalability, simple reconfigurability, and easy integration with fibre networks make this architecture a promising candidate for quantum communication of many ground nodes and a satellite, thus paving the way towards interconnection of ground nodes at a global scale.

Excitations and ergodicity of critical quantum spin chains from non-equilibrium classical dynamics

We study a quantum spin-1/2 chain that is dual to the canonical problem of non-equilibrium Kawasaki dynamics of a classical Ising chain coupled to a thermal bath. The Hamiltonian is obtained for the general disordered case with non-uniform Ising couplings. The quantum spin chain (dubbed Ising-Kawasaki) is stoquastic, and depends on the Ising couplings normalized by the bath's temperature. We give its exact ground states. Proceeding with uniform couplings, we study the one- and two-magnon excitations. Solutions for the latter are derived via a Bethe Ansatz scheme. In the antiferromagnetic regime, the two-magnon branch states show intricate behavior, especially regarding their hybridization with the continuum. We find that that the gapless chain hosts multiple dynamics at low energy as seen through the presence of multiple dynamical critical exponents. Finally, we analyze the full energy level spacing distribution as a function of the Ising coupling. We conclude that the system is non-integrable for generic parameters, or equivalently, that the corresponding non-equilibrium classical dynamics are ergodic.

Howe duality and algebras of the Askey-Wilson type: an overview

The Askey-Wilson algebra and its relatives such as the Racah and Bannai-Ito algebras were initially introduced in connection with the eponym orthogonal polynomials. They have since proved ubiquitous. In particular they admit presentations as commutants that are related through Howe duality. This paper surveys these results.

The Higgs and Hahn algebras from a Howe duality perspective

The Hahn algebra encodes the bispectral properties of the eponymous orthogonal polynomials. In the discrete case, it is isomorphic to the polynomial algebra identified by Higgs as the symmetry algebra of the harmonic oscillator on the $2$-sphere. These two algebras are recognized as the commutant of a $\mathfrak{o}(2)\oplus\mathfrak{o}(2)$ subalgebra of $\mathfrak{o}(4)$ in the oscillator representation of the universal algebra $\mathcal{U}(\mathfrak{u}(4))$. This connection is further related to the embedding of the (discrete) Hahn algebra in $\mathcal{U}(\mathfrak{su}(1,1))\otimes\mathcal{U}(\mathfrak{su}(1,1))$ in light of the dual action of the pair $\big(\mathfrak{o}(4),\mathfrak{su}(1,1)\big)$ on the state vectors of four harmonic oscillators. The two-dimensional singular oscillator is naturally seen by dimensional reduction to have the Higgs algebra as its symmetry algebra.

The dual pair $Pin(2n)\times\mathfrak{osp}(1|2)$, the Dirac equation and the Bannai-Ito algebra

The Bannai-Ito algebra can be defined as the centralizer of the coproduct embedding of $\mathfrak{osp}(1|2)$ in $\mathfrak{osp}(1|2)^{\otimes n}$. It will be shown that it is also the commutant of a maximal Abelian subalgebra of $\mathfrak{o}(2n)$ in a spinorial representation and an embedding of the Racah algebra in this commutant will emerge. The connection between the two pictures for the Bannai-Ito algebra will be traced to the Howe duality which is embodied in the $Pin(2n)\times\mathfrak{osp}(1|2)$ symmetry of the massless Dirac equation in $\mathbb{R}^{2n}$. Dimensional reduction to $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ will provide an alternative to the Dirac-Dunkl equation as a model with Bannai-Ito symmetry.

The generalized Racah algebra as a commutant

The Racah algebra $R(n)$ of rank $(n-2)$ is obtained as the commutant of the \mbox{$\mathfrak{o}(2)^{\oplus n}$} subalgebra of $\mathfrak{o}(2n)$ in oscillator representations of the universal algebra of $\mathfrak{o}(2n)$. This result is shown to be related in a Howe duality context to the definition of $R(n)$ as the algebra of Casimir operators arising in recouplings of $n$ copies of $\mathfrak{su}(1,1)$. These observations provide a natural framework to carry out the derivation by dimensional reduction of the generic superintegrable model on the $(n-1)$ sphere which is invariant under $R(n)$.

The Racah algebra as a commutant and Howe duality

The Racah algebra encodes the bispectrality of the eponym polynomials. It is known to be the symmetry algebra of the generic superintegrable model on the $2$-sphere. It is further identified as the commutant of the $\mathfrak{o}(2) \oplus \mathfrak{o}(2) \oplus \mathfrak{o}(2)$ subalgebra of $\mathfrak{o}(6)$ in oscillator representations of the universal algebra of the latter. How this observation relates to the $\mathfrak{su}(1,1)$ Racah problem and the superintegrable model on the $2$-sphere is discussed on the basis of the Howe duality associated to the pair $\big(\mathfrak{o}(6)$, $\mathfrak{su}(1,1)\big)$.
