Focusing light by wavefront shaping through disorder and nonlinearity

Wavefront shaping is a powerful technique that can be used to focus light through scattering media, which can be important for imaging through scattering samples such as tissue. The method is based on the assumption that the field at the output of the medium is a linear superposition of the modes traveling through different paths in the medium. However, when the scattering medium also exhibits nonlinearity, as may occur in multiphoton microscopy, this assumption is violated and the applicability of wavefront shaping becomes unclear. Here we show, using a simple model system with a scattering layer followed by a nonlinear layer, that with adaptive optimization of the wavefront light can still be controlled and focused through a scattering medium in the presence of nonlinearity. Notably, we find that moderate positive nonlinearity can serve to significantly increase the focused fraction of power, whereas negative nonlinearity reduces it.

Non-adiabatic quantum pumping by a randomly moving quantum dot

We look at the time dependent fluctuations of the electrical charge in an open 1D quantum system represented by a quantum dot experiencing random lateral motion. In essentially non-adiabatic settings we study both diffusive and ballistic (Levy) regimes of the barrier motion where the electric current as well as the net pumped electric charge experience random fluctuations over the static background. We show that in the large-time limit, $t \to \infty$, the wavefunction is naturally separated into the Berry-phase component (resulting from the singular part of the wave amplitude in the co-moving frame) and the non-adiabatic correction (arising from fast oscillating, slow decaying tails of the same amplitude). Based on this separation we report two key results: Firstly, the disorder averaged wave function and current are asymptotically mainly determined by the same Berry phase contribution that applies in the case of adiabatic motion. Secondly, after a short transition period the pumped electric charge exhibits fluctuations that grow much faster than predicted by the adiabatic theory. We also derive the exact expressions for the average propagator (in the co-moving basis representation) for the diffusive and ballistic types of motion considered.

Nonlinear propagation of an optical speckle field

We provide a theoretical explanation of the results on the intensity distributions and correlation functions obtained from a random beam speckle field in nonlinear bulk waveguides reported in the recent publication Y. Bromberg et.al., Nat. Photonics \textbf{4}, 721 (2010). We study both focusing and defocusing case and in the limit of small speckle size (short correlated disordered beam) provide analytical asymptotes for the intensity probability distributions at the output facet. Additionally we provide a simple relation between the speckle sizes at the input and output of a focusing nonlinear waveguide. The results are of practical significance for the nonlinear Hanbury Brown and Twiss interferometry both in optical waveguides and Bose-Einstein condensates.

Phase transitions in optical turbulence

We consider turbulence in the Gross-Pitaevsky model and study the creation of a coherent condensate via an inverse cascade originated at small scales. The growth of the condensate leads to a spontaneous breakdown of symmetries of small-scale over-condensate fluctuations: first, statistical isotropy is broken, then series of phase transitions mark the change of symmetry from the two-fold to three-fold to four-fold. At the highest condensate level reached, we observe a short-range positional and long-range orientational order (similar to a hexatic phase in the condensed matter physics). In other words, the longer one pumps the system the more ordered it becomes. We show that these phase transitions happen when the driving term corresponds to an instability (i.e. it is multiplicative in the k-space) but not when the system is pumped by a random force. Thus we demonstrate for the first time non-universality of the inverse-cascade turbulence. We also describe anisotropic spectral flux flows in k-space, anomalous correlations of fluctuations and collective oscillations of turbulence-condensate system.

Stationary scattering from a nonlinear network

Transmission through a complex network of nonlinear one-dimensional leads is discussed by extending the stationary scattering theory on quantum graphs to the nonlinear regime. We show that the existence of cycles inside the graph leads to a large number of sharp resonances that dominate scattering. The latter resonances are then shown to be extremely sensitive to the nonlinearity and display multi-stability and hysteresis. This work provides a framework for the study of light propagation in complex optical networks.
